Let's say you start to brainstorm a list of all the emotions you've ever experienced. Just for fun, try it now.

What's on your list? Chances are, you included things like happy, sad, excited, angry, afraid, grateful, proud, scared, confused, stressed, relaxed and amazed.

Now sort your list into two categories — positive emotions and negative emotions. Feeling both positive and negative emotions is a natural part of being human. We might use the word "negative" to describe more difficult emotions, but it doesn't mean those emotions are bad or we shouldn't have them. Still, most people would probably rather feel a positive emotion than a negative one. It's likely you'd prefer to feel happy instead of sad, or confident instead of insecure. What matters is how our emotions are balanced—how much of each type of emotion, positive or negative, we experience.

Negative emotions warn us of threats or challenges that we may need to deal with. For example, fear can alert us to possible danger. It's a signal that we might need to protect ourselves. Angry feelings warn us that someone is stepping on our toes, crossing a boundary, or violating our trust. Anger can be a signal that we might need to act on our own behalf.

Negative emotions focus our awareness. They help us to zero in on a problem so we can deal with it. But too many negative emotions can make us feel overwhelmed, anxious, exhausted or stressed out. When negative emotions are out of balance, problems might seem too big to handle. The more we dwell on negative emotions, the more negative we begin to feel. Focusing on negativity just keeps it going.

Positive emotions balance out negative ones, but they have other powerful benefits, too. Instead of narrowing our focus like negative emotions do, positive emotions affect our brains in ways that increase our awareness, attention and memory. They help us take in more information, hold several ideas in mind at once, and understand how different ideas relate to each other. When positive emotions open us up to new possibilities, we are more able to learn and build on our skills. That leads to doing better on tasks and tests. People who have plenty of positive emotions in their everyday lives tend to be happier, healthier, learn better, and get along well with others.

  1. P1

    Opening with Interactive Engagement

The author uses an interactive brainstorming activity to engage readers in thinking about emotions they have experienced.

文章主旨是 explain the nature and functions of emotions,而这个 opening 通过 personal engagement 让 abstract topic 变得 concrete and accessible。它为后面 categorizing emotions into positive and negative 做了 groundwork,让 readers 先 generate their own emotion list,这样后续的 classification and analysis 就更有 personal relevance。

  2. P2

    Exemplifying Common Emotions

The author provides a comprehensive list of common emotions that readers likely included in their brainstorming.

在 article's overall structure 中,这个 paragraph 起到 transition role。它从 personal brainstorming 转向 shared understanding of emotions。对于 article's main thesis about emotional balance,这个 paragraph 很重要,因为它 present 了 diverse range of emotions without judgment, showing that humans experience 各种 emotional states。这为后面 discuss positive-negative balance 和 their different functions 提供了 necessary foundation。

  3. P3

    Categorizing Emotions and Introducing Balance

The paragraph introduces the classification of emotions into positive and negative categories, clarifies that negative emotions are not inherently bad, and presents emotional balance as the key consideration.

它 establish 了 analytical framework(positive vs. negative)并 present 了 central thesis(balance matters)。对于 article's main purpose of explaining emotional functions,这个 paragraph 很 crucial,因为它 set the terms for discussion 并 introduce the evaluative criterion(balance)。后面两段 about negative emotions 和最后一段 about positive emotions 都是 elaborate 这个 balance concept。

  4. P4

The Warning Function of Negative Emotions

The paragraph explains that negative emotions function as warning signals that alert us to threats and challenges, using fear and anger as examples of how emotions prompt protective or defensive actions.

在 article structure 中,这个 paragraph 是 first part of the body that develops the thesis。Article 说 'negative emotions warn us of threats',这里 elaborate 这个 function 具体 how it works。对于 overall message about balance,这个 paragraph establish 为什么 negative emotions are necessary 和 valuable。它 counter potential bias against negative emotions by showing their protective purpose。这为下一段 discuss 'too many negative emotions' 做了 setup,因为 function 虽然 useful, but excess 会 create problems。

  5. P5

The Double-Edged Nature of Negative Emotions

The paragraph explains that while negative emotions usefully focus our attention on problems, excessive negative emotions can overwhelm us, and dwelling on them creates a self-perpetuating cycle of negativity.

前面一段 establish negative emotions as useful,这一段 show their limits and dangers。Together they support the central thesis about balance。对于 overall message,这个 paragraph crucial 因为它 explain 为什么 'balance' matters—not just that we need both types, but that too much of negative type creates specific problems。The cycle mechanism('more we dwell...more negative we feel')也 transition 到下一段 about positive emotions,暗示 we need something to break this cycle。

  6. P6

The Broad Benefits of Positive Emotions

The paragraph explains that positive emotions not only balance negative ones but also broaden cognitive abilities, enhance learning and performance, and contribute to overall happiness, health, and better relationships.

这个 concluding paragraph complete 整个 article's argument about emotional balance。它不只是 present positive emotions 的 benefits,而是 show 为什么 balance matters by demonstrating what positive emotions contribute。The cognitive mechanism explanation(broaden vs. narrow)provide 科学 foundation for the practical advice about balance。对于 article's thesis,这个 paragraph essential because it show that emotional balance isn't just avoiding too much negativity,而是 actively cultivating positivity for its unique cognitive and life benefits。The progression from neural level('affect our brains')到 behavioral level('learn better')to life level('happier, healthier')create 一个 complete picture of why positive emotions matter。

SELF CHECK ·

  1. 第 1 段 定位词 invited to do at the beginning

What are readers invited to do at the beginning?

    • A To separate emotions into helpful and harmful groups.
    • B To explain why negative emotions should be avoided.
    • C To make a list of emotions they have experienced.
    • D To recall situations that made them angry.
    • E To judge whether their emotions are normal.
    • F To identify the causes of their stress.

该项完整保留了原文的核心动作 make a list,以及限定信息 emotions they have experienced。

Which of the following is included among the emotions readers may list?

    • A Jealous.
    • B Embarrassed.
    • C Bored.
    • D Confused.
    • E Ashamed.
    • F Relieved.

What does the passage suggest about negative emotions?

    • A They should be eliminated whenever possible.
    • B They prove that a person lacks confidence.
    • C They are always stronger than positive emotions.
    • D They occur only when people face serious problems.
    • E They are natural and are not inherently bad.
    • F They should outweigh positive emotions in daily life.

According to the passage, anger can signal that a person may need to do what?

    • A Protect themselves from possible physical danger.
    • B Ignore a minor violation of trust.
    • C Avoid setting boundaries with other people.
    • D Suppress the feeling before it becomes stronger.
    • E Determine whether they are generally unhappy.
    • F Act in defense of their own interests.

该项是对 act on our own behalf 的准确同义改写。

  5. 第 5 段 定位词 dwell on may happen

What may happen when people dwell on negative emotions?

    • A They may feel increasingly negative.
    • B They will solve problems more quickly.
    • C They will become less aware of any challenges.
    • D They will automatically develop positive emotions.
    • E They may find every problem easy to manage.
    • F They will remember more information at once.

该项准确改写了 the more we dwell on negative emotions, the more negative we begin to feel。

  6. 第 6 段 定位词 positive emotions contribute to learning

How can positive emotions contribute to learning?

    • A They narrow attention to one problem at a time.
    • B They broaden attention and help people process connected ideas.
    • C They make people ignore difficult information.
    • D They guarantee success on every test.
    • E They remove the need to build skills.
    • F They prevent people from experiencing negative emotions.

作者通过 interactive 的方式 invite 读者 brainstorm emotions,然后 list 常见的 emotional experiences,这是 expository text 典型的 engaging opening,用 relatable activity 来 introduce the topic of emotions。

这个 opening section 通过 experiential approach 让读者 connect with the topic,为后续 explain positive and negative emotions 的 nature and functions 做 preparation, establish common ground between writer and reader。

这段 establish 文章的 central framework:categorize emotions into positive and negative, clarify 这种 categorization 不是 moral judgment,然后 introduce 核心 concept of emotional balance。这是 expository text 的 thesis statement section。

这个 pivotal paragraph 完成了从 topic introduction 到 main explanation 的 transition, set up 后续 discuss positive and negative emotions 各自 functions 的 organizational structure,明确 emotional balance 是 key concern。

这两段 focus on negative emotions,先 explain 其 warning function(alert to threats and challenges),然后 discuss 其 focusing effect 以及 potential problems when out of balance。展现了 expository text 的 balanced analysis pattern。

这个 section detailed explain negative emotions 的 dual nature:既有 protective function(warn and focus),也有 potential harm(overwhelm and exhaust)。这是 develop main thesis 的 first major component, demonstrate why balance matters。

这段 explain positive emotions 的 multiple benefits:not only balance negative ones,还有 expand awareness, enhance cognitive functions, improve learning and relationships。用 contrastive structure(instead of narrowing...positive emotions...)来 highlight differences,是 expository comparison 的 typical pattern。

这个 concluding section complete 对 emotional categories 的 explanation, demonstrate positive emotions 的 expansive effects as contrast to negative emotions 的 narrowing focus。这 reinforces 为什么 emotional balance is crucial, bring expository argument to closure。

最后,context 中 'just for fun' 和 'try it now' 的 informal tone,以及第二段展示的 extensive list,都指向一个 quick、spontaneous、free-flowing 的 thinking process。

让我们 synthesize 这些 clues:从 morphology 看,'in-' prefix 清楚表明这是 negation of secure。 这三个 layers of evidence——morphological、structural、semantic——全都 point to 同一个 direction:这是一种 lacking confidence 或 lacking security 的 psychological state。

然后,contextual contrast between healthy focusing (第四段) 和 unhealthy dwelling (第五段) 揭示了 duration and intensity 的差异。最后,negative consequences (overwhelmed, anxious, trapped) 确认这是一种 prolonged、excessive、unproductive 的 mental state。所有 clues 共同指向一个 meaning:不是简单的 focus,而是 lingering too long on something。

让我们 connect the dots:'over-' prefix 告诉我们这是 exceeding some limit。Semantic company (anxious, exhausted, stressed) 确认这是 intense negative state。Causal position in the logic chain 揭示它是 too much input 导致的 inability to cope。这三个 perspectives——morphological、associative、functional——converge on 一个 clear meaning:当 something is too much to handle,导致的那种 被淹没、难以应对 的感觉。

    P2

文章在第2段通过列举 happy, sad, excited, angry, afraid, grateful, proud, scared, confused, stressed, relaxed and amazed 这些具体的 emotions,让 abstract concept 变得 concrete and relatable。 这个 enumeration 使得说明文不再 theoretical,而是 grounded in real-life feelings。

信号词 like such as for example for instance including namely say take...as an example

Template: When discussing [概念], examples include [具体例1], [具体例2], [具体例3], and [具体例4], all of which demonstrate [该概念的特点]。

    P3 P4 P5 P6

第3段明确提出 sort your list into two categories — positive emotions and negative emotions,将 complex emotional spectrum 进行 systematic classification。 通过这种 binary classification,作者 simplify the analysis 同时保持 comprehensive coverage of the topic。

信号词 sort into divide into classify into categorize as fall into group into separate into two/three types of kinds of

比如讨论 study habits,可以按 time management, learning techniques, environmental factors 来 categorize。关键是确保 categories are mutually exclusive yet collectively exhaustive。Template: [主题] can be divided/sorted/classified into [类别1] and [类别2]. [类别1] includes/refers to [特征], while [类别2] involves [特征]. 记得在分类后,separately elaborate each category。

    P4

通过 'fear can alert us to possible danger' 和 'angry feelings warn us that someone is stepping on our toes' 这些 concrete scenarios,抽象的 'warn us of threats or challenges' 变得 tangible and relatable。这些 examples 不仅 demonstrate the concept,还通过 cause-effect relationships 展示了 emotions 如何 function as signals in real situations。

信号词 for example for instance such as like take...for example consider imagine suppose

仿写: 当 explaining functions or mechanisms 时,选择 universally recognizable examples。问自己: what specific situation 能最好地 demonstrate this principle? 比如讲 feedback mechanisms,可以说 'For example, when you touch a hot stove, pain signals alert you to remove your hand immediately'。Template: For example/For instance, [具体情境] can [展示该功能/机制]. It's a signal that [进一步解释作用]。

    P6

第6段开头 'Positive emotions balance out negative ones, but they have other powerful benefits, too' 以及后面 'Instead of narrowing our focus like negative emotions do, positive emotions affect our brains in ways that increase our awareness' 构成鲜明对比。通过 contrast negative emotions (narrow focus, warn of threats) with positive emotions (broaden awareness, open possibilities),作者 highlight the complementary nature 和 distinct functions of both types。这种 comparison 不是简单的 opposition,而是展示 how they work differently to serve different purposes,强化了文章关于 emotional balance 的 central message。

信号词 instead of unlike while whereas in contrast on the other hand however but rather than compared to

比如对比 online vs. traditional learning,可以说 'While traditional classrooms promote face-to-face interaction, online learning offers flexibility and self-paced progress'。Template: Unlike/While [A] [特征1], [B] [相反或不同特征]. 或者 Instead of [doing X] like [A] does, [B] [does Y]. 记住 maintain parallel structure 让对比 clear and powerful。

    P4 P5

第4段 'It's a signal that we might need to protect ourselves' 对前面 fear 的 function 进行 further explanation。第5段 'They help us to zero in on a problem so we can deal with it' 对 'focus our awareness' 做出 clarification。这些 interpretive statements 不是 define concepts,而是 elaborate on their meaning and implications,帮助读者 deeper understanding of how and why emotions work。通过这种 exposition,作者 bridge the gap between stating a fact and ensuring reader comprehension。

信号词 that means this means in other words that is namely i.e. to put it another way simply put essentially

比如说完 'Exercise improves cognitive function',可以加 'That means regular physical activity enhances your ability to focus, remember, and solve problems'。Template: [陈述]. That means/This means/In other words,

    P6

第6段提到 'hold several ideas in mind at once',虽然 'several' 不是 precise number,但它仍属于 quantitative description,表明 positive emotions 能让我们 simultaneously process multiple pieces of information。这个 numerical reference 使得 cognitive benefit 更加 concrete and measurable,帮助读者 grasp the magnitude of positive emotions' impact on mental capacity。相比说 'hold many ideas' 或 'hold ideas',用 'several' 传达了 specific range,让 explanation 更 precise。

信号词 several numerous a few many percent times approximately about over more than 具体数字

比如讲 memory retention,可以说 'Studies show people forget about 50% of new information within one hour'。Template: [主语] [动词] [数字/量词] [对象], demonstrating/indicating/showing [该数字的意义]。确保 numbers serve a purpose — 帮助读者 understand magnitude, frequency, or extent。

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P3
We might use the word 'negative' to describe more difficult emotions, but it doesn't mean those emotions are bad or we shouldn't have them.

转折类 but however yet nevertheless nonetheless still though

    P3
Still, most people would probably rather feel a positive emotion than a negative one. It's likely you'd prefer to feel happy instead of sad, or confident instead of insecure.

对比类 rather instead of prefer more...than better...than as opposed to in contrast to

Rather 和 prefer 在这里的 implied meaning 是:虽然人们 naturally incline towards 积极情绪,但这个 universal preference 本身 doesn't constitute the whole story。 如果作者 directly state 'you shouldn't just pursue positive emotions',可能会 encounter resistance。但通过先 validate 这个 natural preference,再用 'What matters' 来 redirect focus,作者 smoothly transitions 到 balance 这个 central theme。这展示了说明文中的 rhetorical strategy——用 acknowledge-then-qualify 的模式来 guide readers towards a more nuanced understanding。

    P5
Negative emotions focus our awareness. They help us to zero in on a problem so we can deal with it. But too many negative emotions can make us feel overwhelmed, anxious, exhausted or stressed out.

But but however yet still nevertheless even so

这为第六段关于积极情绪的 balancing role 做了 logical preparation,让整个 argument about emotional balance 变得 compelling and evidence-based。

    P6
Positive emotions balance out negative ones, but they have other powerful benefits, too.

转折类 but and moreover furthermore in addition what's more not only...but also

这个 but 的 implied meaning 是:积极情绪不仅仅完成了 balance 这个 basic function,它们还 bring a whole suite of cognitive and social advantages that go beyond mere emotional equilibrium。 这对主旨的 crucial impact 是:它 shifts 文章从 simple balance metaphor(像跷跷板一样 offset negative emotions)到 richer understanding of positive emotions 作为 cognitive and social catalysts。

    P6
Instead of narrowing our focus like negative emotions do, positive emotions affect our brains in ways that increase our awareness, attention and memory.

Instead of instead of rather than as opposed to in contrast to unlike whereas

如果两种情绪只是 cancel each other out,那么 50-50 split 就够了。 Narrowing focus 帮助 deal with immediate threats,但 expanding awareness enables learning, creativity, and growth。 言外之意是:我们需要 more positive emotions 不是因为它们 feel better,而是因为它们 unlock different cognitive capabilities that negative emotions cannot provide。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

这篇文章没有 favor one type of emotion over another,而是 acknowledge both sides 的 validity 和 functionality。

这篇文章主动 address 了 'negative' 这个 term 可能带来的 bias,说明作者 aware of objectivity 且在 actively maintaining it。

综合判断时要看 all structural and linguistic elements 是否 point to the same direction。这篇文章的 every layer 都 support the same conclusion:作者在 presenting scientific understanding of emotions 而不是 advocating for emotional preference。虽然最后提到 positive emotions 的 people 'tend to be happier, healthier',但这是 stating research findings 而非 personal opinion。

  • Let's say P1

这个 phrase 是 invitation to participate,它 create 一种 collaborative atmosphere 而不是 authoritative tone。在说明文中使用 'Let's say' 表明作者想要 readers 成为 active participants in understanding,而非 passive receivers of opinion。这种 inclusive language 是 neutral educational stance 的 clear marker。

Let's imagine Consider this Suppose that What if Try this

  • Chances are P2

这个 probability marker 显示作者在 making generalizations based on common patterns 而非 stating absolute truths。'Chances are' 这种 hedging language 是 academic neutrality 的标志,表明作者 recognize variability 且不在 overstating claims。这体现了 balanced, cautious approach typical of objective explanation。

It's likely Probably Most people Typically Generally

  • it doesn't mean P3

这个 clarification phrase 是作者 actively preventing misinterpretation 的 direct evidence。当作者说 'We might use the word negative... but it doesn't mean those emotions are bad',他们在 explicitly correcting potential bias。这种 self-correction 是 conscious neutrality 的强烈 signal,表明作者 prioritize accurate understanding over simple categorization。

同类词 this doesn't imply not to say that doesn't suggest doesn't indicate but that doesn't mean

  • can be a signal P4

方法论核心:寻找 modal verbs (can, may, might) combined with function-describing nouns (signal, indicator, mechanism, function)。这类 combinations 出现时,作者在 adopting a systems-explanation approach 而非 value-judgment approach。在这篇文章中,negative emotions 'can alert us'、'can be a signal' 这些 phrases 都 indicate 作者在 explaining emotional function 而不是 evaluating emotional worth。这种 functional framing 直接 correlate with informative neutral attitude。当 see these mechanistic descriptions dominate the text,可以 confidently judge 作者的 stance is educational and objective。

同类词 may indicate might suggest could mean serves as functions as

  • tend to be P6

Tend to be' 避免了 overgeneralization, maintained scientific caution even when discussing benefits。这种 qualified language 贯穿全文,确保 author 的 stance remains balanced and evidence-based 而非 promotional。

同类词 are more likely to generally are often have typically show usually demonstrate

议论文的 opening 通常会 present a claim 或 controversial statement 需要 defend,新闻报道则用 lead paragraph 交代 who/what/when/where。而这篇用 'Let's say you start to brainstorm' 这种 engaging readers 的方式,是典型的 explanatory approach,目的是 facilitate understanding,不是 persuade 也不是 inform about news。

这是典型的 expository structure:先 categorize,再 explain each category systematically。议论文会 build arguments with evidence to prove a thesis,新闻会 present facts chronologically 或 by importance。

全文用 declarative sentences 陈述 facts about emotions,如 'Negative emotions warn us' 和 'Positive emotions balance out negative ones',这是 presenting information 而不是 arguing a position。没有 'should', 'must', 'it is essential' 等 prescriptive language,也没有 'officials said' 或 'according to' 等 news attribution。

这篇文章完美展现了 expository characteristics:interactive opening (第1段-2),systematic explanation of emotion categories (第3段-6),objective informative tone throughout。没有 thesis statement 需要 defend,没有 news event 需要 report,只有 clear explanation of how emotions work,这就是 quintessential expository writing。
