Part III Section C (1)
Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.
Passage One
Questions 46 and 50 are based on the following passage.
P1California has been facing a drought for many years now, with certain areas even having to pump freshwater hundreds of miles to their distribution system. The problem is growing as the population of the state continues to expand. New research has found deep water reserves under the state which could help solve their drought crisis. Previous drilling of wells could only reach depths of 1,000 feet, but due to new pumping practices, water deeper than this can now be extracted(抽取). The team at Stanford investigated the aquifers(地下蓄水层) below this depth and found that reserves may be triple what was previously thought.

P2It is profitable to drill to depths more than 1,000 feet for oil and gas extraction, but only recently in California has it become profitable to pump water from this depth. The aquifers range from 1,000 to 3,000 feet below the ground, which means that pumping will be expensive and there are other concerns. The biggest concern of pumping out water from this deep is the gradual settling down of the land surface. As the water is pumped out, the vacant space left is compacted by the weight of the earth above.

P3Even though pumping from these depths is expensive, it is still cheaper than desalinating(脱盐) the ocean water in the largely coastal state. Some desalination plants exist where feasible, but they are costly to run and can need constant repairs. Wells are much more reliable sources of freshwater, and California is hoping that these deep wells may be the answer to their severe water shortage.

P4One problem with these sources is that the deep water also has a higher level of salt than shallower aquifers. This means that some wells may even need to undergo desalination after extraction, thus increasing the cost. Research from the exhaustive study of groundwater from over 950 drilling logs has just been published. New estimates of the water reserves now go up to 2,700 billion cubic meters of freshwater.

46.
How could California's drought crisis be solved according to some researchers?
A)By building more reserves of groundwater.
B)By drawing water from the depths of the earth.
C)By developing more advanced drilling devices.
D)By upgrading its water distribution system.

B(细节题)

How could California's drought crisis be solved according to some researchers?

How could California's drought crisis be solved,被动结构"如何被解决";according to some researchers 是状语,只交代信息出处,不增加难度,结构平铺直叙,无陷阱。

P1

New research has found deep water reserves under the state which could help solve their drought crisis. Previous drilling of wells could only reach depths of 1,000 feet, but due to new pumping practices, water deeper than this can now be extracted.

By building more reserves of groundwater 把原文"发现地下已有的储量"偷换成"建造更多储水设施",build 与 found(发现)方向相反。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • deep water reserves under the stateBy drawing water from the depths of the earth
    • water deeper than this can now be extractedBy drawing water from the depths of the earth

By drawing water from the depths of the earth

原文仅说 due to new pumping practices,强调"新做法",并未提到"研发更先进的钻井设备"这一动作,developing more advanced drilling devices 没有出处。

原文 certain areas even having to pump freshwater hundreds of miles to their distribution system 只是描述现状,并非"研究者提出的解决办法";upgrading its water distribution system 偷把背景说成方案。

47.
What can be inferred about extracting water from deep aquifers?
A)It was deemed vital to solving the water problem.
B)It was not considered worth the expense.
C)It may not provide quality freshwater.
D)It is bound to gain support from the local people.

B(推断题)

What can be inferred about extracting water from deep aquifers?

What can be inferred about extracting water from deep aquifers? 主干 What can be inferred 是被动疑问"可以推出什么",about 引出推断对象。

P2

It is profitable to drill to depths more than 1,000 feet for oil and gas extraction, but only recently in California has it become profitable to pump water from this depth.

    • only recently in California has it become profitable to pump water from this depthIt was not considered worth the expense
    • profitableworth the expense

It was not considered worth the expense 把原文 only recently 暗藏的"之前不"翻译为显性否定,故锁定。

may not provide quality freshwater 对应 higher level of salt,描述的是水质而非"是否值得抽"的判断,与第 47 题问的"可推断什么"角度不符。

bound to gain support from the local people

48.
What is mentioned as a consequence of extracting water from deep underground?
A)The sinking of land surface.
B)The harm to the ecosystem.
C)The damage to aquifers.
D)The change of the climate.

A(细节题)

What is mentioned as a consequence of extracting water from deep underground?

What is mentioned as a consequence of extracting water from deep underground? 主干 What is mentioned;as a consequence of…

P2

The biggest concern of pumping out water from this deep is the gradual settling down of the land surface. As the water is pumped out, the vacant space left is compacted by the weight of the earth above.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • the gradual settling down of the land surfaceThe sinking of land surface

The sinking of land surface

The harm to the ecosystem

The change of the climate

49.
What does the author say about deep wells?
A)They run without any need for repairs.
B)They are entirely free from pollutants.
C)They are the ultimate solution to droughts.
D)They provide a steady supply of freshwater.

D(细节题)

What does the author say about deep wells? 用 What does the author say

What does the author say about deep wells? What does the author say about…,about

P3

Wells are much more reliable sources of freshwater, and California is hoping that these deep wells may be the answer to their severe water shortage.

Some desalination plants exist where feasible, but they are costly to run and can need constant repairs,说"需要维修"的是脱盐厂,而非井;They run without any need for repairs

California is hoping that these deep wells may be the answer 仅是"加州希望",ultimate solution to droughts 把可能性拔高为"终极方案",越级。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • Wells are much more reliable sources of freshwaterThey provide a steady supply of freshwater

They provide a steady supply of freshwater

50.
What may happen when deep aquifers are used as water sources?
A)People's health may improve with cleaner water.
B)People's water bills may be lowered considerably.
C)The cost may go up due to desalination.
D)They may be exhausted sooner or later.

C(细节题)

What may happen when deep aquifers are used as water sources?

What may happen when deep aquifers are used as water sources? 主句 What may happen;when 引导时间状语从句,从句用被动 are used as water sources。

P4

This means that some wells may even need to undergo desalination after extraction, thus increasing the cost.

原文 higher level of salt 反而暗示水质更差,cleaner water 与之相反;且 health may improve 整段无任何出处。

water bills may be lowered considerably 与 thus increasing the cost 方向相反,正话反说。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • thus increasing the costThe cost may go up
    • undergo desalination after extractiondue to desalination

The cost may go up due to desalination

They may be exhausted sooner or later 谈深层蓄水层会被抽光,原文末段反而给出 2,700 billion cubic meters of freshwater 这样巨大的储量估算,并未提到枯竭。
