Okay. So let's get started. And to start things off I think what we need to do is consider a definition. I'm going to define what love is but then most of the experiments I'm going to talk about are really focused more on attraction than love. And I'm going to pick a definition from a former colleague, Robert Sternberg, who is now the dean at Tufts University but was here on our faculty at Yale for nearly thirty years. And he has a theory of love that argues that it's made up of three components: intimacy, passion, and commitment, or what is sometimes called decision-commitment. And these are relatively straightforward. He argued that you don't have love if you don't have all three of these elements.

Intimacy is the feeling of closeness, of connectedness with someone, of bonding. Operationally, you could think of intimacy as you share secrets, you share information with this person that you don't share with anybody else. Okay. That's really what intimacy is, the bond that comes from sharing information that isn't shared with other people. The second element is passion. Passion is the drive that leads to romance. You can think of it as physical attraction. And Sternberg argues that this is a required component of a love relationship. The third element of love in Sternberg's theory is what he calls decision/commitment, the decision that one is in a love relationship, the willingness to label it as such, and a commitment to maintain that relationship at least for some period of time. Sternberg would argue it's not love if you don't call it love and if you don't have some desire to maintain the relationship. So if you have all three of these, intimacy, passion and commitment, in Sternberg's theory, you have love.

Now what's interesting about the theory is what do you have if you only have one out of three or two out of three? What do you have and how is it different if you have a different two out of three? What's interesting about this kind of theorizing is it gives rise to many different combinations that can be quite interesting when you break them down and start to look them carefully. So what I've done is I've taken Sternberg's three elements of love, intimacy, passion and commitment, and I've listed out the different kinds of relationships you would have if you had zero, one, two or three out of the three elements.

  1. P1

Introducing the Triangular Theory of Love

Sternberg's theory defines love as the combination of intimacy, passion, and commitment.

  2. P2

The Three Components of Love Explained

The paragraph explains the meanings and necessity of intimacy, passion, and commitment in love.

  3. P3

    Relationship Types from Different Combinations

Different combinations of the three components create distinct types of relationships.

Sternberg qualify as love

According to Sternberg, what is necessary for a relationship to qualify as love?

    • A It must involve a strong feeling of intimacy.
    • B It must be openly labeled as a romantic relationship by both partners.
    • C It must include intimacy, passion, and commitment.
    • D It must be maintained for the rest of one's life.
    • E It must be based primarily on physical attraction.
    • F It must have been studied by a psychologist with long academic experience.

原文不仅列举 intimacy、passion、commitment,还用 you don't have love if you don't have all three 强化“缺少任何一个就不能构成 love”。

Which behavior best illustrates intimacy in Sternberg's theory?

    • A Experiencing physical attraction toward another person.
    • B Deciding to call a relationship love and trying to preserve it.
    • C Feeling generally close to people in a large social circle.
    • D Sharing secrets or personal information with someone that one does not share with others.
    • E Keeping all personal information private from one's partner.
    • F Having all three components of a love relationship at the same time.

  3. 第 3 段 定位词 combination-based allow the speaker to do

What does the combination-based framework allow the speaker to do?

    • A Determine which single component is the most important in every relationship.
    • B Prove that passion is sufficient to create a lasting love relationship.
    • C Measure the intensity of intimacy, passion, and commitment in an existing couple.
    • D Explain why people often confuse attraction with love.
    • E Classify different relationship types according to which and how many components are present.
    • F Identify the precise length of commitment required for love.

该项准确整合了段落中的两层分类信息:一是 how many components,即 zero、one、two 或 three;二是 which components,即不同的 two out of three 会形成不同关系。它也对应 listed out the different kinds of relationships 的操作结果。

这个 segment 对 three components 进行 operationalization,把 intimacy 解释为 sharing secrets 和 bonding,把 passion 定义为 physical attraction 和 romantic drive,把 commitment 阐述为 willingness to label 和 maintain relationship。

在说明文的 body section 中,这个意群通过 operationalizing each component 来 deepen reader's understanding。它把 第1段 中提到的 three abstract terms 转化为 observable behaviors 和 psychological states,使 Sternberg's theory 从 bare framework 变成 applicable model,这是 expository text 中 典型的 elaboration strategy。

这个 closing segment 把 theory 推向 application level,提出当你只有 one、two 或 different combinations of the three elements 时会产生什么 relationship types。它用 'what do you have if...' 这样的 hypothetical questions 来 open up analytical possibilities,并 preview 后续可能的 theoretical exploration。

这种 from definition to application 的 progression 是 expository texts 中让 theory become practical tool 的 standard approach。

MAIN IDEA ·

说明文的 opening paragraph 经常会通过 define、theory、concept 这类 framing words 来 establish the topic。

当文章出现 'made up of three components'、'three elements' 这类 structural breakdown language 时,说明作者在 decompose a complex concept。这种 componential analysis 是说明文的 典型 organizational pattern,表明主旨是 explain the structure of something

Each paragraph dedicated to one component 是 expository writing 的 classic pattern, confirms 文章主旨是 comprehensive explanation of a theory

第3段 开头的 'Now what's interesting' 和 'What do you have if...' 表明作者在 extend the analysis beyond basic definition。这类 exploratory questions 说明文章不只是 define the theory,还在 explore its implications,但这是 secondary focus, main idea 仍然是 theory explanation

当你确认了 (1) 首段有 theoretical framework,(2) 明确的 component structure,(3) 段落 parallel development,你就可以 confidently state 主旨是 'explaining [Theory Name] which consists of [X components]'。本文就是 Sternberg's theory + three components (intimacy, passion, commitment) = 文章主旨

所以,整个推理链是:intimacy → exclusive information sharing → creates bond → feeling of closeness。

作者给出的 definition 很清晰:先有 decision(认定这是一段 love relationship),再有 willingness to label(愿意给它命名),最后是 commitment to maintain(承诺维持)。

所以当作者说 operationally, you could think of intimacy as...,意思是从 practical operation 的角度、从 observable behaviors 的层面来理解 intimacy。

其次,the dean at Tufts University 的表达方式,特别是 definite article the 的使用,告诉我们这是一个 unique, singular position。

    P1 P2

作者在开篇就明确提出 'I'm going to define what love is',然后引入 Sternberg 的 theory,把 love 定义为由 intimacy、passion 和 commitment 这三个 components 构成的整体。

信号词 define definition is consists of comprises is made up of refers to means can be understood as is characterized by

Who defines it authoritatively?然后用 'X is defined as...' 或 'X consists of...' [Topic] can be defined as [core components/characteristics]. According to [authority/theory], it comprises [element 1], [element 2], and [element 3], each of which [brief function].'

    P2

Operationally, you could think of intimacy as you share secrets...',用 'share secrets' 这样的 concrete behavior 来 illustrate 什么是 closeness 和 bonding。对 passion 的诠释用 'the drive that leads to romance' 和 'physical attraction' 来 clarify。

Operationally In other words That is That is to say What this means is You can think of it as This refers to Essentially Put simply To put it another way

仿写: 当你 introduce 一个 term 后,可以立即用 'Operationally'、'In other words'、'That is to say' 等 transition phrases 引出 interpretation。 How would someone experience it? [Concept] is [basic definition]. Operationally, you could think of it as [concrete manifestation/behavior]. That is, [specific example or scenario that illustrates the concept].'

    P1 P2 P3

文章在 第2段 中将 love 的 three components 逐一分开讨论:first intimacy, second passion, third commitment。 在 第3段 中,作者进一步提出了 classification 的 complexity:'What do you have if you only have one out of three or two out of three?'

信号词 three components first second third categories types kinds can be divided into falls into classified as one out of three two out of three

Can I break this down into distinct types or categories? What's the basis for classification?使用 ordinal markers 如 'The first type..., The second..., The third...' [Topic] can be divided into [number] categories based on [criterion]. The first category is [type A], which is characterized by [features]. The second category, [type B], differs in that [distinguishing features]. The third...'

    P1 P2

作者在文章开篇就引用了 Robert Sternberg 的 theory,明确说明 'a former colleague, Robert Sternberg, who is now the dean at Tufts University but was here on our faculty at Yale for nearly thirty years.' 这种 citation 不仅提供了 theoretical basis,更重要的是通过 Sternberg 的 credentials(Tufts dean,Yale faculty 30 years)来 establish authority。

Robert Sternberg According to argues that theory former colleague dean faculty research shows studies indicate as [expert] points out cited by based on [source]

有什么 established research 可以 back up my points?引用时要提供 sufficient context about the source(position, institution, credentials)。 According to [Name], [credentials/position at institution], [theory/claim]. [Name] argues that [specific points from the source]. This [theory/research] suggests that [implications].'

    P2 P3

作者在解释 intimacy 时给出了 concrete example:'you share secrets, you share information with this person that you don't share with anybody else.' 同样,在 第3段 提到 'What do you have if you only have one out of three or two out of three?' Examples 让 theoretical discussion 变得 tangible and relatable。

For example For instance Such as Like Including To illustrate Consider Imagine Say Suppose

What would this look like in practice? Can I give a concrete scenario?用 'For example'、'For instance'、'Such as' 等 markers 来 introduce examples。 [Abstract concept] can be understood through concrete examples. For instance, [specific scenario/behavior that demonstrates the concept]. Another example would be [alternative instance that shows the same principle].'

    P3

在 第3段 中,作者设置了 comparative framework:'What do you have if you only have one out of three or two out of three? What do you have and how is it different if you have a different two out of three?'

信号词 different different from differs in that in contrast compared to while whereas on the other hand however but unlike similarly likewise

How are they similar or different? What happens when one variable changes?使用 comparative language 如 'different from'、'in contrast to'、'while... on the other hand'。 When [condition A], the result is [outcome X]. However, when [condition B], the outcome differs in that [outcome Y]. This comparison reveals that [insight about the relationship between conditions and outcomes].'

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
I'm going to define what love is but then most of the experiments I'm going to talk about are really focused more on attraction than love.

转折类 but however yet nevertheless nonetheless though although

作者通过 but 这个 pivotal word 传递了一个 crucial message:虽然 formally define 了 love 的 complete framework,但 subsequent experimental discussions 将主要 concentrate on attraction 这个 narrower aspect。这个 implicit information 对 article's thesis 有 significant value,因为它 sets realistic expectations,告诉 readers 不要期待 comprehensive coverage of all three components。

    P1
He argued that you don't have love if you don't have all three of these elements.

否定强调类 don't not no never cannot without lack

这种 stringent definition 同时 raises stakes,让 readers understand 大多数 relationships 可能 fall short of true love。

    P2
you share secrets, you share information with this person that you don't share with anybody else

排他性限定类 don't share with anybody else only exclusively solely uniquely nobody else not with others

这个 subtext 对 theoretical framework 有 deep implications,因为它 reframes intimacy 从 absolute quantity(how much you share)到 relative exclusivity(what you share uniquely)。这种 definitional nuance 对 main thesis 的 contribution 在于它 explains 为什么 intimacy 是 love 的 necessary component—因为 love relationships 需要 qualitatively different level of connection,而这种 difference 通过 informational exclusivity 来 manifest。

    P2
And Sternberg argues that this is a required component of a love relationship.

Sternberg argues argues that claims believes maintains asserts contends

作者通过 explicitly attribute passion's necessity to Sternberg 传递的 implicit meaning 是:这个 requirement 是 theory-specific rather than universally accepted。这个 subtle cue 对 article thesis 有 important implications,因为它 acknowledges 可能存在 alternative conceptualizations of love 不需要 physical attraction。这种 careful attribution 的 rhetorical function 是 maintain academic integrity 同时 present a specific framework。言外之意还 hints 这可能是 theory 的 controversial aspect,因为 passion 作为 mandatory element 可能 exclude certain types of loving relationships(如 companionate love in later life),作者通过 attribution 来 avoid personally defending this potentially debatable position。

    P3
What's interesting about this kind of theorizing is it gives rise to many different combinations that can be quite interesting when you break them down and start to look them carefully.

What's interesting Interestingly Notably Importantly Significantly Remarkably Surprisingly

言外之意还 reveals 作者的 pedagogical strategy:通过 mark 理论的 generative potential,激发 students' curiosity about how incomplete combinations create qualitatively different relationship types。这种 meta-commentary 实际上是 foreshadowing,告诉 readers 最 intellectually rewarding part 在 systematic breakdown of combinations,而不只是 memorizing three components。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

说明文中的 procedural phrases 像 'let's' 和 'I'm going to' 显示作者是在 guiding readers through content,而不是 persuading them,这种 neutral instructional tone 是 objective attitude 的第一个 indicator。

当作者用 'X argues' 或 'according to X' 这样的 attribution phrases,说明他在 relaying others' ideas 而非 asserting his own。

'Straightforward' 和 'interesting' 是 low-intensity descriptors,不表达 strong approval or disapproval。

    Meta-discourse phrases 如 'what's interesting' 和 systematic enumeration(zero, one, two, three)表明作者在 facilitating understanding through logical organization,而非 building an argument。

当多个 linguistic features 都 align towards neutrality 且没有 contradictory signals(如突然出现的 strong criticism 或 passionate endorsement),我们可以 confidently categorize 作者态度为 objective and explanatory。

  • I'm going to define P1

这个 future-tense instructional phrase 表明作者在 announcing his teaching plan,'going to define' 显示他的 purpose 是 clarification 而非 argumentation。

I will explain let me describe I'll outline let's examine I'm going to discuss

  • Sternberg argues P1

'Argues' 这个 attribution verb 将 claim ownership 转给 Sternberg,作者不说 'love requires three components' 而说 'Sternberg argues it requires',这种 distancing 保持了 reporter objectivity。

同类词 he argued Sternberg would argue according to Sternberg Sternberg's theory states in Sternberg's view

  • relatively straightforward P1

它 acknowledges complexity 的存在但 characterizes 这些 components as accessible,保持 neutral assessment tone。

同类词 fairly simple reasonably clear somewhat complex rather basic quite understandable

  • what's interesting about P3

'Interesting' 是个 low-intensity evaluative term,表达 intellectual curiosity 而非 strong approval。'What's interesting about the theory is' 引导读者 attention 但不 impose value judgment,只是 highlighting a feature worthy of examination。这种 minimal evaluation 保持了 exploratory tone, inviting analysis 而非 declaring superiority。

同类词 what's notable is what's worth observing it's interesting that an interesting aspect is interestingly

  • you would have if P3

Conditional structures 'you would have if' 和 'if you have' 展示 logical relationships without prescribing what people should do。作者在 describing outcomes under different conditions,使用 hypothetical framing 保持 analytical distance。

同类词 if you have when you have in cases where under conditions of given that you have

说明文的核心特征是 informative function,它的目标是 to clarify 或 to describe a concept,而不是像议论文那样 persuade readers 接受某个 viewpoint,也不像新闻报道那样 report recent events。这篇文章开头直接说 'I'm going to define what love is',这是典型的 expository signal,表明作者要 explain a theory 而非 debate an issue。

这篇文章明确地把 love 分成 three components (intimacy, passion, commitment),然后 one by one 进行 detailed explanation。这种 numbered or listed structure 是 expository writing 的典型 framework,而议论文更多用 claim-evidence-reasoning chain,新闻报道则用 inverted pyramid structure。

这篇文章作者说 'Sternberg would argue' 和 'he has a theory',是在 report someone else's framework,而不是 defend his own position。 I believe、we must、it is crucial that 这类 persuasive language。如果是新闻,会看到 officials said、the incident occurred 这类 factual reporting。

这篇文章整体就是在 unpack Sternberg's theory,用 'he argued'、'Sternberg would argue' 这样的 language 来 present an established model。第3段 更进一步 explore 这个 theory 的 implications ('what do you have if you only have one out of three')。这种 theory explication 是 expository function,而议论文会 challenge or defend theories,新闻报道则 report events 而非 theories。

最终判断需要 holistic assessment:文章的 every paragraph 都在 serve the explanatory purpose。第1段 introduces the concept,第2段 elaborates components,第3段 explores permutations。 这篇文章的完整 trajectory 就是 'here's a theory, here are its parts, here's how they combine',这是纯粹的 explanation。
