The number of devices you can talk to is multiplying—first it was your phone, then your car, and now you can tell your kitchen appliance what to do. But even without gadgets that understand our spoken commands, research suggests that, as bizarre as it sounds, under certain circumstances, people regularly ascribe human traits to everyday objects.

Sometimes we see things as human because we are lonely. In one experiment, people who reported feeling isolated were more likely than others to attribute consciousness to various gadgets. In turn, feeling close to objects can alleviate loneliness. When college students were reminded of a time they had been excluded in a social setting they compensated by exaggerating their number of friends—unless they were first given tasks that caused them to interact with their phone as if it had human qualities. The phone apparently stood in for real friends.

At other times, we personify products in an effort to understand them. One study found that three in four respondents yelled at their computer. Further, the more their computer gave them problems, the more likely the respondents were to report that it had its own "beliefs and desires".

So how do people assign traits to an object? In part, we rely on looks. On humans, wide faces are associated with dominance. Similarly, people rated cars, clocks and watches with wide faces as more dominant-looking than narrow-faced ones, and preferred them—especially in competitive situations. An analysis of car sales in Germany found that cars with grilles(护栅) that were upturned like smiles sold best. The purchasers saw this feature as increasing a car's friendliness.

  1. P1

    The Humanization of Everyday Objects

People commonly personify everyday objects, even without advanced technology.

  2. P2

    Loneliness and Human-Like Objects

Lonely people personify objects because these objects can provide social comfort.

  3. P3

Personification as a Way to Understand Technology

People personify troublesome products to understand their behavior.

  4. P4

    Facial Cues in Product Personification

People use human-like facial cues to judge products as dominant or friendly.

What does research suggest about people's responses to everyday objects?

    • A They communicate effectively only with voice-controlled devices.
    • B They regard all household appliances as conscious beings.
    • C They may attribute human characteristics to ordinary things in some situations.
    • D They prefer cars and phones to other kinds of objects.
    • E They stop assigning emotions to objects when technology improves.
    • F They use objects mainly to give spoken commands to other people.

  2. 第 2 段 定位词 exaggerate their number of friends social exclusion

Why did the students not exaggerate their number of friends after social exclusion?

    • A They were asked to recall more close friendships from college.
    • B They had overcome their feelings of isolation through social contact.
    • C They believed that their phones could contact real friends for them.
    • D They had first interacted with a phone as though it possessed human qualities.
    • E They had been excluded because they owned too few gadgets.
    • F They considered their phones more dominant than other objects.

该项精确保留了 first given tasks、interact with their phone 和 as if it had human qualities 三层实验条件。

What was more likely when respondents' computers caused them more problems?

    • A They stopped yelling at their computers.
    • B They became less convinced that computers had consciousness.
    • C They replaced their computers with more friendly products.
    • D They found that three out of four computers were defective.
    • E They reported that their computers had their own beliefs and desires.
    • F They attributed their technical problems to other users.

has its own 在选项中被展开为 had their own,保持了人化归因的核心。

双more镜像 先用 more problems 扫到 第3段,不必先读 three in four 的统计句。

  4. 第 4 段 定位词 analysis of car sales in Germany sell best

According to the analysis of car sales in Germany, which feature helped cars sell best?

    • A Wide faces associated with dominance.
    • B Narrow-faced designs that looked less competitive.
    • C Clocks and watches with larger displays.
    • D Cars designed mainly for competitive situations.
    • E Features that made purchasers feel more dominant.
    • F Grilles that were upturned like smiles.

这个 opening paragraph 先通过 everyday examples 引出了 talking to devices 这个日常现象,然后用 research suggests 转向核心 topic,指出 people regularly ascribe human traits to objects 是一个 under certain circumstances 发生的普遍 phenomenon,为全文的 explanation 奠定基础。

通过 two experiments 提供 empirical evidence,先说明 isolated people 更容易 attribute consciousness to gadgets,再用 in turn 展示 reciprocal effect,即 interacting with objects as humans 可以 alleviate loneliness,用 phone standing in for friends 这个具体 example 收尾。

作为 body paragraph 的第一个 explanatory unit,这个意群通过 cause-and-effect pattern 深入 explain 一个 specific circumstance(loneliness)under which personification occurs,用 experimental evidence 增强 explanatory power,使 explanation 更加 systematic and convincing。

这个 parallel explanatory section 用 at other times 引出第二个 cause:the effort to understand products。用 yelling at computers 这个 relatable behavior 作为 entry point,然后用 further 深化 explanation,指出 computer problems 越多,people 越倾向于 attribute beliefs and desires to it,展示了 personification as a cognitive strategy for comprehension。

作为第二个 explanatory unit,这个意群 parallels 前一个 cause 的 structure,继续 expand the explanation 通过 presenting another circumstance。

这个 mechanistic explanation section 用 so 引发 deeper inquiry:how do people assign traits?答案是 rely on looks。通过 wide faces 和 dominance 的 human association 作为 starting point,然后用 similarly 建立 parallel,说明 people 对 objects 也用同样的 visual cues 做 judgment。最后用 car grilles 的 sales analysis 提供 real-world evidence,证明 smile-like features 增强 perceived friendliness。

作为 explanatory climax,这个意群 shifts from why(前两个意群)to how, provide mechanistic insight into the process。这种 from causes to mechanisms 的 progression 是说明文 achieve depth 的典型 strategy,让 explanation 更加 thorough and systematic。

MAIN IDEA ·

这种 parallel development 表明文章不是 focus 在某一个 specific cause,而是 presenting a comprehensive view。

    说明文主旨的完整表达需要包含两部分:what is being explained(the phenomenon)和 how it's being explained(the scope of explanation)。

主旨信号词 attribute P1 human traits P1 because P2 Sometimes... At other times P2 research suggests P1

MAIN IDEA ·

People commonly attribute human traits to everyday objects and gadgets. This personification occurs when individuals feel lonely, seek to understand complex devices, or rely on visual cues like wide faces or smile-like features that suggest friendliness or dominance.

    我们先从 syntax structure 入手:'ascribe A to B' 这个固定搭配告诉我们这是把 A 施加给 B 的动作。

    P1

作者在 第1段 提到 phone、car、kitchen appliance 这些 everyday gadgets,用 concrete examples 来说明 devices you can talk to 的范围在不断扩大。这种 enumeration 让 abstract concept 变得 tangible,帮助 readers 快速理解 personification 发生的 context,为后文探讨 why people attribute human traits 搭建了 real-world foundation。

信号词 first...then...now for example such as for instance take...for example like including say

What are three everyday instances that readers encounter?选择 familiar objects 或 situations,用 progression 排列(from simple to complex)。模版:「The number of [现象主体] is [动态变化]—first it was [例1], then [例2], and now [例3]」。

比如「In one experiment, people who reported feeling isolated...」和「One study found that three in four respondents yelled...」。 这对 main idea 至关重要,因为它 validates 了 people regularly ascribe human traits 这个看似 bizarre 的 behavior。

In one experiment research suggests One study found An analysis studies show according to evidence indicates data reveals findings suggest

What research backs this up?引用时保持 concise:「In one [研究类型], [研究对象] were more likely to [行为结果]」。避免 overwhelming readers with too many statistics,选择 most striking finding 即可。模版:「[Research type] found that [quantified result] + [specific behavior]」,比如「One study found that three in four respondents [did X]」。

    P3

第3段 提到「three in four respondents yelled at their computer」,这个 specific fraction 让 abstract behavior 变得 measurable。通过 quantifying 这个 seemingly irrational action,作者 demonstrates 有多普遍 people personify objects when frustrated。

信号词 three in four 75% half of one in three majority a quarter twice as likely doubled increased by

    仿写: 当描述 behavior frequency 或 prevalence 时,问自己:Can I quantify this?用 fractions(three in four)比 percentages(75%)更 conversational,适合 general audience。模版:「[Fraction] + [subjects] + [specific action]」,比如「Two in three students reported [behavior]」。记住,choose memorable numbers—「three in four」比「74.3%」更 sticky in readers' minds。

    P4

第4段 用「On humans, wide faces are associated with dominance. Similarly, people rated cars, clocks and watches...」 这个 parallel 直接支撑了 main idea:people assign human traits based on visual cues,因为我们 unconsciously apply human-perception rules 到 non-human things。

Similarly In the same way likewise just as compared to in contrast whereas while more...than as...as

What's the familiar reference point?先描述 well-known case,再用「Similarly」「In the same way」引出 target case。模版:「On [熟悉对象], [特征] is associated with [属性]. Similarly, [目标对象] with [相同特征] are perceived as [相同属性]」。

    P2

第2段 中「The phone apparently stood in for real friends」是对前文 experiment 结果的 interpretive explanation。作者不只是 report 了 data(students interacted with phones),还 clarifies 这个 behavior 的 underlying meaning:the phone functioned as a social substitute。这种 elaboration 帮助 readers 理解 deeper implication, connecting isolated finding 到 broader theme of personification alleviating loneliness, directly supporting main idea。

信号词 apparently in other words that is to say this suggests this means in effect essentially put simply

So what does this really mean?用「apparently」「in other words」「this suggests」引出 interpretation。 关键是 go beyond surface description, explain the psychological or logical significance behind the observed pattern。

    P2 P3 P4

整篇文章通过「Sometimes...At other times...So how...」 这种 systematic categorization 让 complex phenomenon 变得 organized, showing personification 不是 random,而是有 distinct triggers 和 mechanisms, perfectly supporting main idea by demonstrating multiple pathways through which people assign human traits。

Sometimes...At other times One type...Another type First...Second...Third can be divided into falls into categories There are several kinds ranges from...to

What are the distinct types or causes?用 transitional phrases 标记 categories:「Sometimes...At other times...」或「One reason...Another factor...」。确保 categories 有 clear boundaries 且 mutually exclusive。模版:「[Category marker A], [现象] occurs because [原因A]. [Category marker B], [现象] happens when [原因B]」。

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
as bizarre as it sounds, under certain circumstances, people regularly ascribe human traits to everyday objects

委婉表达 bizarre unusual strange oddly surprisingly curiously remarkably

表面上作者用 bizarre 承认这个behavior sounds weird,但言外之意是在establish credibility——'我understand你的skepticism,但let me show you the research'。 这个strategy让subsequent paragraphs的examples和evidence显得more convincing,因为作者已经demonstrated awareness of how unusual this topic might seem。

    P2
they compensated by exaggerating their number of friends—unless they were first given tasks that caused them to interact with their phone as if it had human qualities

对比类 compensated unless but however in contrast whereas alternatively

表面上是在describe一个experimental finding,但实际传递的message是:人类有一个fundamental need for social connection,当这个need不能通过real human interaction满足时,people will find substitutes——无论是exaggerating existing friendships还是treating objects as if they're human。'The phone apparently stood in for real friends'这个conclusion makes this implicit message explicit。这对文章主旨至关重要,因为它provides a psychological explanation for为什么people personify objects:it's not just a quirk,而是a coping mechanism for loneliness。这个insight elevates the topic from'people do this weird thing'到'people do this because of a deep psychological need',让整篇文章的argument更有depth和explanatory power。

    P3
Further, the more their computer gave them problems, the more likely the respondents were to report that it had its own 'beliefs and desires'

Further Furthermore Moreover Additionally What's more Beyond that Even more

这个sentence的言外之意是:personification不是a passive or arbitrary phenomenon,而是an active cognitive strategy that intensifies with need。当computer给用户more problems时,用户更倾向于attribute beliefs and desires to it,这暗示人们use anthropomorphism as a sense-making tool——给object赋予intentions帮助我们explain和predict its behavior。这个insight对文章主旨crucial,因为它provides the second major explanation(after loneliness in 第2段)for why people personify objects:it's a way to understand and cope with complex or frustrating technology。这个functional explanation让personification seem less bizarre and more like a rational(虽然unconscious)cognitive strategy。作者通过这个correlation subtly argues that anthropomorphism serves psychological purposes, which reinforces the main thesis that personification is a common and meaningful human behavior。

    P4
On humans, wide faces are associated with dominance. Similarly, people rated cars, clocks and watches with wide faces as more dominant-looking than narrow-faced ones

Similarly Likewise In the same way Just as By the same token Analogously Correspondingly

表面上是在说wide-faced objects被perceived as more dominant,但deeper message是:人类automatically and unconsciously apply social perception rules to non-social objects。我们不只是rationally thinking'这个car有wide grille',而是在a pre-cognitive level processing it through the same neural pathways we use to assess human faces。这个reveals that personification不是a conscious decision or a quirky behavior,而是deeply embedded in our perceptual and cognitive architecture。对文章主旨而言,这是the most fundamental explanation:我们给objects赋予human traits because our brains are wired to perceive the world through a social lens。这个biological/cognitive foundation makes all the previous examples(loneliness compensation, sense-making)seem even more inevitable and universal。作者通过这个seemingly simple analogy实际上在arguing that anthropomorphism is hard-wired into human cognition。

    P4
people rated cars, clocks and watches with wide faces as more dominant-looking than narrow-faced ones, and preferred them—especially in competitive situations

情态词 preferred favored liked appreciated valued desired sought

这个statement的言外之意在于reveal personification has real-world consequences。不只是人们see cars as having faces,而是这个perception influences purchasing decisions, especially在competitiveness matters的situations。这暗示人们strategically select objects based on the human traits they project, treating objects as extensions of self or tools for social signaling。言外之意更深层的是:anthropomorphism isn't just a perceptual phenomenon,而是shapes consumer behavior and potentially social dynamics。对文章主旨而言,这个insight是crucial closing move,因为它demonstrates that personification不只是interesting psychological quirk,而是has tangible impacts on how people interact with the material world and construct their social identity。通过ending with a market analysis,作者implicitly argues that anthropomorphism is so pervasive and powerful that it drives economic behavior, which is the strongest possible evidence for the thesis that people regularly ascribe human traits to objects。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

结论先行:本文作者态度为客观中立( Objective and informative with mild interest)。

在说明文中,evaluative language 的 presence or absence 直接 reflect 作者的 stance。Neutral descriptive verbs 表明作者是在 objectively reporting,而 emotionally charged modifiers 会 reveal 作者的 subjective attitude towards the phenomenon。

Bizarre as it sounds' 这类 concessive clause 表明作者 acknowledge 这个现象的 unusual nature,但紧接着用 'research suggests' 来 legitimize it,这种 balance 显示出 objective curiosity 而非 skepticism or advocacy。

如果文章以 open-ended facts 结束而非 persuasive conclusion,说明作者的 goal 是 educating readers about a phenomenon 而非 convincing them to adopt a position。这种 descriptive closure 是 neutral explanatory attitude 的 strong indicator。

Citation-based structure + neutral reporting language + balanced framing + descriptive closure 共同 construct 了一个 information-oriented discourse,作者的 role 是 knowledge transmitter 而非 opinion advocate。

  • research suggests P1

Suggests' 这个 verb 比 'proves' 或 'shows' 更加 tentative,体现了 scientific caution 和 objectivity,支持作者的 neutral, evidence-based attitude。

同类词 studies show evidence indicates findings reveal data demonstrate experiments found

  • bizarre as it sounds P1

这个 concessive expression 显示作者 acknowledge 这个 phenomenon 的 counterintuitive nature,但用 'as it sounds' 而非 'as it is' 表明他在 referencing common perception 而不是 making his own judgment。

同类词 strange as it may seem surprisingly interestingly curiously remarkably

  • one experiment/one study/an analysis P2

这些 phrases 是 source attribution markers,表明作者在 systematically presenting evidence from multiple studies。每段开头用 different research examples 来 support different aspects of the phenomenon,这种 structure 显示作者的 role 是 synthesizing existing knowledge 而非 creating arguments, strongly support 了 objective, informative attitude。

同类词 one experiment one study research shows an analysis a survey

  • people who reported/were more likely/compensated by P2

这些 passive and neutral descriptive phrases 用来 report experimental observations without adding evaluative commentary。作者在 describing human behaviors 时保持 observational distance,用 'reported'、'were more likely' 这类 objective language 而非 'oddly chose to' 或 'wisely decided to',这 maintain 了 scientific objectivity and support neutral attitude。

同类词 people who reported respondents were more likely participants showed subjects tended to individuals exhibited

  • So how do people P4

So' 这个 discourse marker 显示 logical progression,而 'how do people' 的 phrasing 保持了 inquiry-based tone 而非 assertive judgment。这种 question-answer structure 是 informative writing 的 characteristic feature, support 作者的 educational purpose and objective attitude。

So how do Why do people What causes How does this happen What explains

这是在 present a topic 而不是 state an opinion 或 report breaking news,明确是 expository 的开场方式。

第2段 和 第3段 分别解释了 two different circumstances:loneliness 导致 personification,以及为了 understand products 而 personify them。每段都在 explain why people ascribe human traits to objects,这是典型的 expository breakdown,不是在 argue for a position 也不是在 report events as they unfold。

全文中出现 'research suggests'、'In one experiment'、'One study found'、'An analysis of car sales',这些都是 citing evidence 来 support explanations 的标志。同时用了 'Sometimes'、'At other times'、'So how' 这类 organizational markers 来 structure the explanation,语言 tone 是 informative 而非 persuasive 或 reportorial。

这篇文章完全符合 expository pattern:开头 introduce 了 personification phenomenon,中间 systematically explain different reasons (loneliness, understanding, appearance),每个 reason 都有 research backing,最后 extend 到 practical application (car design),整体是在 inform readers about why and how 这个现象发生,而非 persuade 或 report。
