Shakespeare's lifetime was coincident with a period of extraordinary activity and achievement in the drama. By the date of his birth Europe was witnessing the passing of the religious drama, and the creation of new forms under the incentive of classical tragedy and comedy. These new forms were at first mainly written by scholars and performed by amateurs, but in England, as everywhere else in western Europe, the growth of a class of professional actors was threatening to make the drama popular, whether it should be new or old, classical or medieval, literary or farcical. Court, school, organizations of amateurs, and the traveling actors were all rivals in supplying a widespread desire for dramatic entertainment; and no boy who went to a grammar school could be ignorant that the drama was a form of literature which gave glory to Greece and Rome and might yet bring honor to England.

When Shakespeare was twelve years old the first public playhouse was built in London. For a time literature showed no interest in this public stage. Plays aiming at literary distinction were written for schools or court, or for the choir boys of St. Paul's and the royal chapel, who, however, gave plays in public as well as at court. But the professional companies prospered in their permanent theaters, and university men with literary ambitions were quick to turn to these theaters as offering a means of livelihood. By the time that Shakespeare was twenty-five, Lyly, Peele, and Greene had made comedies that were at once popular and literary; Kyd had written a tragedy that crowded the pit; and Marlowe had brought poetry and genius to triumph on the common stage – where they had played no part since the death of Euripides. A native literary drama had been created, its alliance with the public playhouses established, and at least some of its great traditions had been begun.

The development of the Elizabethan drama for the next twenty-five years is of exceptional interest to students of literary history, for in this brief period we may trace the beginning, growth, blossoming, and decay of many kinds of plays, and of many great careers. We are amazed today at the mere number of plays produced, as well as by the number of dramatists writing at the same time for this London of two hundred thousand inhabitants. To realize how great was the dramatic activity, we must remember further that hosts of plays have been lost, and that probably there is no author of note whose entire work has survived.

  1. P1

The Historical and Social Foundations of Elizabethan Drama

Elizabethan drama emerged from changing theatrical traditions and the rise of professional performance.

  2. P2

The Rise of Public Playhouses and Literary Drama

Public playhouses united commercial success with literary achievement, creating a native English drama.

  3. P3

The Extraordinary Scale and Rapid Development of Elizabethan Drama

Elizabethan drama experienced an exceptionally intense, prolific, and partly lost period of development.

  1. 第 1 段 定位词 growth of professional actors likely effect

What was the likely effect of the growth of professional actors in England?

    • A It would restore religious drama as the dominant form of entertainment.
    • B It would confine dramatic performances to schools and courts.
    • C It was likely to make drama popular regardless of its form or origin.
    • D It would ensure that only classical plays received public attention.
    • E It would replace literature as the chief source of national honor.
    • F It would eliminate rivalry among theatrical providers.

原文将 growth of professional actors 与 make the drama popular 直接建立预测性因果关系,并用 whether it should be new or old, classical or medieval, literary or farcical 补充“类型不构成限制”。正确项把这一串并列分类概括为 regardless of its form or origin,完成了合理同义改写。

  2. 第 2 段 定位词 university men with literary ambitions turn to the permanent theaters

Why did university men with literary ambitions turn to the permanent theaters?

    • A The theaters were reserved for plays performed by choir boys.
    • B The public stage had become the only place interested in literature.
    • C Schools and courts no longer allowed literary plays to be performed.
    • D The theaters offered them a means of livelihood.
    • E They wanted to imitate the comedies written by Lyly, Peele, and Greene.
    • F They expected permanent theaters to exclude professional companies.

原文使用 were quick to turn to these theaters as offering a means of livelihood,直接给出转向的原因。正确项将 offering a means of livelihood 轻微转换为 offered them a means of livelihood,主谓关系更清晰,但信息、语气和因果方向均未变化。

  3. 第 3 段 定位词 loss and incomplete survival can be inferred

What can be inferred from the loss and incomplete survival of Elizabethan plays?

    • A Almost no Elizabethan plays have survived to the present day.
    • B No playwright of note completed his literary career.
    • C The population of London prevented plays from being widely produced.
    • D The decline of drama began before its major forms had developed.
    • E The surviving record probably understates the scale of dramatic activity.
    • F Literary historians can reconstruct every lost play from surviving works.

这个 unit 是 expository text 的 core explanation section, directly addresses 主旨中的 how literary writers joined commercial playhouses。通过 chronological progression(from age 12 to 25),展示了 professional theater 如何从被 literature 忽视到成为 literary ambitions 的 outlet,说明了 alliance 的 establishment process

这个 evaluative unit 将 focus 扩展到 next twenty-five years,强调这段时期对 literary history students 的 exceptional interest,通过 the number of plays、number of dramatists、lost works 等 quantitative aspects 来说明 dramatic activity 有多么 great,从而 characterize 这个 brief period 的 unprecedented nature

作为 expository text 的 concluding assessment section,这个 unit 呼应主旨中的 unprecedented dramatic activity and creativity,用 concrete evidence(mere number、hosts of lost plays)支撑 exceptional interest 的 claim,完成了从 development process 到 significance evaluation 的 structural transition,给读者留下对这个 period 的 overall impression

MAIN IDEA ·

本文首句 'Shakespeare's lifetime was coincident with a period of extraordinary activity' 直接点明了 temporal context(莎士比亚时期)和 theme(戏剧的非凡活动期),这为整篇文章定下了 historical exposition 的基调。

本文三段分别用 'Shakespeare's lifetime'、'When Shakespeare was twelve/twenty-five' 和 'for the next twenty-five years' 来 mark 不同的 time stages。这种 clear temporal sequencing 显示文章在 tracing a historical development,而非 arguing a point 或 comparing alternatives,确认了这是 developmental exposition 而非 argumentative text。

文中反复出现 'passing', 'creation', 'growth', 'built', 'created', 'established', 'development', 'beginning, growth, blossoming, and decay'。这些 process-oriented verbs 清晰表明文章在 documenting a transformation,而 main idea 就是关于 Elizabethan drama 如何从 religious forms evolve 成 professional literary theater。

第二段末的 'A native literary drama had been created, its alliance... established, and... traditions had been begun' 是典型的 culmination statement,用 past perfect tense 总结了 achieved state。第三段的 'exceptional interest', 'great dramatic activity', 'unprecedented' 等 evaluative terms 强化了这个 development 的 significance,确认 main idea 是关于这个 remarkable transformation。

    整合前述要素:temporal scope(Shakespeare's lifetime, 25 years)+ subject(drama/theater)+ transformation(from religious to professional-literary)+ outcome(unprecedented activity and creativity),得出 main idea 是 tracing Elizabethan drama's development 从 traditional forms 到 thriving literary-commercial synthesis 的 process。

    让我们把这些clues串联起来:首先,从syntactic structure来看,'be coincident with' 这个pattern表明两个entities之间存在某种relationship。其次,通过morphological analysis,我们识别出prefix 'co-' 表示 'together',combined with 'incide' 的 'occur' 含义,指向 'happen together' 的meaning。

我们从三个angles来consolidate understanding:Syntactically,'under the incentive' 这个prepositional phrase表明某种driving force正在operating。Contextually,整个passage描述的是一个transformation process,从religious drama到new forms,而classical tragedy and comedy在这个process中扮演catalytic role。Morphologically,通过connecting to related words like 'incite',我们识别出stimulation or urging的semantic core。这些clues共同point to一个meaning:某种能够motivate or stimulate action的factor。

让我们synthesize这些insights:Structurally,通过parallel contrasts with 'literary',我们establish了farcical代表drama spectrum的opposite end。Morphologically,'-ical' suffix确认这是describing a quality or type。Contextually,整个discussion about entertainment和popular drama暗示存在一种more lighthearted, less serious的dramatic form。

我们从multiple dimensions来verify our inference:Morphologically,'live + hood' 这个composition直接points to 'the state or condition of living'。Syntactically,'means of livelihood' 这个fixed phrase位于economic context中,reinforcing the financial dimension。Contextually, university men寻求theaters作为source of income的narrative further confirms这是about economic sustenance。

让我们integrate all the evidence:Syntactically, contrast structure with 'But' 表明despite obstacles, companies achieved positive results。Contextually,这些companies的success足以attract literary talents, indicating significant achievement。Morphologically, connection to 'prosperity' reinforces the notion of thriving and success。这些converging clues都point to一个meaning:achieving success, particularly in economic or business terms。

让我们consolidate our understanding:Structurally, sequential positioning as the final stage in a life-cycle series明确establishes its role as the declining phase。Morphologically, associations with related uses of 'decay' in other contexts(dental, organic)all involve deterioration。Contextually,作者对complete cycle的emphasis要求有一个ending or decline stage来close the narrative arc。这些multiple lines of evidence converge on同一个conclusion:decay表示衰退或衰落阶段。

    P1 P2 P3

文章在第一段提到 Shakespeare's lifetime 这个 temporal scope,在第二段精确指出 when Shakespeare was twelve years old 和 by the time Shakespeare was twenty-five 这两个 specific ages,在第三段点明 the next twenty-five years 和 London of two hundred thousand inhabitants 这些 concrete numbers。

信号词 twelve years old twenty-five twenty-five years two hundred thousand first next

比如描述 historical changes,与其说 'rapid development',不如标注 'within twenty years' 或 'from X to Y'。Practice 这个 pattern:先给出 general statement,然后用 one or two precise numbers 作为 supporting evidence。 During [time period], [phenomenon] occurred, with [specific number] indicating [significance]' 或 'By the age of [number], [subject] had achieved [specific milestone], demonstrating [broader point]'。

    P2

第二段通过 naming specific playwrights—Lyly, Peele, Greene, Kyd, and Marlowe—来 exemplify 'university men with literary ambitions' 这个 general category。每个 name 后面都配有 their specific contributions:Lyly, Peele, Greene 创作了 popular and literary comedies,Kyd 写出了 tragedy that crowded the pit,Marlowe 则 brought poetry and genius to the common stage。这些 concrete examples 让主旨中的 'literary writers joined commercial playhouses' 变得 vivid and credible,用 individual achievements 来 demonstrate the broader trend of literary drama's establishment。

信号词 such as for example including like for instance notably

仿写: 使用举例子时,先 establish a general claim,然后用 'such as'、'for example'、'including' 等 transitional phrases 引出 specific instances。Key principle:examples 要 representative and diverse—如果只举一个 case,可能显得 偏颇;举三到五个能 show variety。像本文一样,可以给每个 example 加上 brief description of their contributions,形成 'Name + Action/Achievement' 的 compact pattern。 [General group] made significant contributions, including [Name 1], who [specific achievement], [Name 2], who [another achievement], and [Name 3], who [yet another achievement]'。

    P1 P2

第二段末尾出现 explicit comparison:'where they had played no part since the death of Euripides'。 同时,第一段提到 drama 'gave glory to Greece and Rome and might yet bring honor to England',这是 cross-cultural and cross-temporal comparison,将 English drama 的 potential 与 classical achievements 相提并论。这些 comparisons 服务于主旨中的 'unprecedented dramatic activity'—通过 reference to classical standards,强调 Elizabethan period 的 exceptional nature。

信号词 since as like than compared to in contrast to similar to as well as whereas while

可以用 explicit markers like 'as...as'、'compared to'、'in contrast to',也可以像本文一样用 implicit structures (since the death of Euripides)。Practice building comparisons 时,确保 the two elements being compared 有 meaningful connection。 [Current phenomenon] achieved [quality/level], a feat not seen since [historical reference]' 或 '[Element A], like [Element B], demonstrated [shared characteristic], but [distinguishing feature]'。

    P1 P2

第一段清晰地 categorize different types of theatrical groups:'Court, school, organizations of amateurs, and the traveling actors'。这个 classification 展示了 Elizabethan drama 的 diverse sources and constituencies,说明 theatrical activity 不是 monolithic 而是来自 multiple sectors。第二段也进行了 implicit classification,区分 'plays aiming at literary distinction' (written for schools or court) 和 professional theater productions。这种 categorization 支持主旨中的 'extraordinary activity'—通过 showing variety and multiplicity of dramatic forms and venues,强调这个 period 的 complexity and richness。

信号词 types kinds categories forms divided into classified as including such as ranging from...to

仿写: Creating effective classifications 要先 identify logical criteria for grouping,然后 ensure categories are mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive。可以用 parallelism 来 present categories—像本文用 'Court, school, organizations..., and traveling actors' 这种 grammatically parallel structure。Transitions 像 'can be divided into'、'fall into categories' 或简单的 listing 都可以。 [Subject] consisted of several types: [Category 1], [Category 2], and [Category 3], each [shared characteristic but distinct feature]' 或 '[Multiple entities] – [Entity A], [Entity B], and [Entity C] – all [common purpose/goal]'。

    P1 P3

第三段开头 'The development of the Elizabethan drama for the next twenty-five years is of exceptional interest to students of literary history' 后面紧跟着 'for in this brief period we may trace the beginning, growth, blossoming, and decay of many kinds of plays'。这个 'for' clause 就是 interpretation—它 explains why this period is exceptionally interesting,不仅 stating a fact 而且 elaborating on its significance。第一段中 'these new forms were at first mainly written by scholars and performed by amateurs, but...the growth of a class of professional actors was threatening to make the drama popular' 也是 interpretive,它 explains the dynamics of dramatic evolution。这些 interpretations 帮助读者 understand the underlying logic 和 significance behind historical facts,深化对主旨 'unprecedented dramatic activity and creativity' 的理解。

信号词 for because meaning that in other words that is to say which means implying suggesting that indicating

仿写: 使用作诠释时,先 present a claim or observation,然后用 explanatory connectors like 'for'、'because'、'meaning that'、'in other words' 来 introduce the interpretation。Good interpretation 应该 reveal non-obvious implications 或 connect facts to broader themes。Avoid simply restating—interpretive sentences 应该 add new insight。 [Statement of fact] is [evaluative adjective], for [explanation of why or how it matters]' 或 '[Observation], meaning that [deeper implication or consequence]'。Key practice:问自己 'So what?'—your interpretation 应该 answer that question。

    P1 P2

第二段结尾 reference 'the death of Euripides' 和第一段提到 'gave glory to Greece and Rome'—这些是 historical and cultural references,虽然不是 direct quotations,但属于 引资料 的范畴,因为它们 invoke established knowledge and authorities from classical tradition。Through mentioning Euripides (古希腊三大悲剧作家之一) 和 Greco-Roman cultural achievements,作者 借助 classical precedents 的 prestige 来 elevate Elizabethan drama's status,同时为 readers 提供 familiar reference points。这种 use of external sources 增强了 argument 的 scholarly credibility,支持主旨中 English drama achieving literary and cultural significance 的论述。

信号词 according to as stated by quoted from referenced in citing as noted by drawing on invoking recalling

仿写: 引资料时要 select sources that are authoritative and relevant。可以是 direct quotes (用引号标记),也可以是 like 本文这样的 allusive references (提及 well-known figures or events)。Integration matters—don't just drop in references;connect them to your point through phrases like 'as demonstrated by'、'recalling'、'not seen since'。对于 historical references, ensure your audience will recognize them or provide brief context。 [Your claim], a pattern reminiscent of [historical reference/authority]' 或 '[Phenomenon], achievement comparable to [established benchmark from history/literature]'。

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
the growth of a class of professional actors was threatening to make the drama popular

情态词类 threatening to make threatening to tend to be likely to be bound to be about to seem to

这对 main idea 的作用是 foreshadow 后面会讲的 literary writers 必须 adapt to commercial theaters 这个 inevitable trend。

    P2
For a time literature showed no interest in this public stage

For a time for a time at first initially in the beginning for a while temporarily

这个 subtext 揭示了 literary elite 对 public playhouses 的 initial disdain,认为 commercial theater 是 beneath them。但 for a time 暗示这种 attitude 很快就会 change。这对 thesis 的作用是 establish 文学界与 commercial theater 之间最初的 disconnect,为下文讲 university men 如何 embrace public theaters 提供 dramatic contrast,强化文章的 narrative arc: from elite rejection to literary-commercial alliance。

    P2
But the professional companies prospered in their permanent theaters, and university men with literary ambitions were quick to turn to these theaters as offering a means of livelihood

But but however yet nevertheless nonetheless even so

这个 implication 是:literary writers 转向 public stage 主要是出于 economic necessity (means of livelihood) 而非 artistic conviction。Prospered 暗示 commercial theaters 提供了 financial opportunities, university men 的 quick response 说明他们很 pragmatic。

    P3
we must remember further that hosts of plays have been lost, and that probably there is no author of note whose entire work has survived

强调类 must remember further that must remember should note that it is important to we must bear in mind it should be emphasized it is crucial to recognize

这个 subtext 是:we are amazed 的程度其实 underestimated,因为 surviving plays 只是 tip of the iceberg。Hosts of plays lost 和 no complete corpus 暗示 actual dramatic output 远超 现存记录。这对 central idea 的作用是 maximize 读者对 Elizabethan period 的 exceptional productivity 的认知,reinforces 文章的 thesis that this was unprecedented era。通过 pointing out data limitations,作者反而 strengthens 其 argument about extraordinary activity。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

说明文常用 time sequence 或 logical categories 来 structure content。这篇文章明显按 timeline 展开:第1段 讲 Shakespeare's birth time,第2段 讲 'when Shakespeare was twelve' 和 'by the time Shakespeare was twenty-five',第3段 讲 'the next twenty-five years'。这种 chronological progression 是 expository writing 的典型特征,议论文会用 claim-evidence-reasoning,新闻用 most important to least important。

文中使用 'was coincident with'、'was witnessing'、'were at first mainly written' 等 neutral descriptive verbs,还有大量 factual details(如 'twelve years old'、'twenty-five years'、'two hundred thousand inhabitants')。没有出现议论文的 'should'、'must'、'in my view',也没有新闻的 'announced'、'breaking'、'just reported'。

没有 argumentative thesis,没有 news event,纯粹是 explaining 和 informing readers about Elizabethan drama 的 historical development。
