The bar chart clearly illustrates the main leisure activities of the elderly in a certain community. As is shown, watching TV ranks far ahead of the rest, chosen by 90.8% of the respondents, followed by taking a walk at 68.3%. By contrast, growing flowers and reading account for only 34.7% and 31.8% respectively, while playing chess sits at the bottom, favored by merely 18.4%.
These figures reveal that passive and effortless pastimes clearly dominate the daily lives of senior citizens. Watching TV and walking cost little and demand neither special skills nor companions, so they naturally appeal to the majority. In contrast, hobbies such as chess or gardening require more energy, patience or partners, which explains their limited popularity.
In my view, this pattern deserves our attention. Physical and social activities benefit the health of the elderly far more than sitting before a screen. Therefore, communities should organize richer events to encourage older people to step outside and enjoy a more colorful later life.
