In a recent study carried out by psychologists on the disruptive effects of smartphones, two groups of college students were given word search puzzles. The first group was told to complete the puzzles with its participants' smartphones in their line of sight. The second group, however, was told that the phones would interfere with the equipment in the experiment, and would need to be moved away from the testing area. Midway through the second group's solving of the puzzles, the experimenter called one of the phones and let it ring for a while before hanging up. Many of the students in that group were unable to focus from then on, becoming anxious and performing more poorly than the first group.

Use of electronics has also been known to lead to a decline in human interactions. Rather than having real-life conversations, many express emotions and engage in deep conversations through social media sites. Many students use their phones and computers during class for non-academic activities, which leads to poor grades. Perhaps the most dramatic impact is the reduction in the amount of sleep, which leads to poor health and weight gain.

Technology is a great tool; however, it's important to recognize its downsides. Lack of sleep, reduction of productivity and weight gain are only a few. If we're not careful about all these minor problems right now, the effect on the future generation is going to be much bigger.

  1. P1

Smartphones as a Source of Distraction

Smartphone notifications disrupt students' focus and reduce their performance.

  2. P2

The Wider Costs of Electronic Use

Excessive electronic use harms social interaction, academic achievement, sleep, and health.

  3. P3

    A Warning for Future Generations

We must recognize and address technology's downsides now to prevent greater harm in the future.

What happened after one of the phones rang during the puzzle-solving task?

    • A The students completed the puzzles more quickly because the ringing phone made them more alert.
    • B The experimenter moved all the phones away from the testing area immediately.
    • C Many students became anxious, lost focus, and performed worse than the first group.
    • D The students used social media to express their anxiety to one another.
    • E Only the student whose phone rang had difficulty concentrating.
    • F The second group outperformed the first group despite the interruption.

障碍在于选项把 unable to focus 转写为 lost focus,并把 more poorly 的比较对象明确为 the first group;考生必须识别这是同义改写,并核验比较对象没有被偷换。

  2. 第 2 段 定位词 most dramatic impact electronic use

According to the passage, what is described as the most dramatic impact of electronic use?

    • A A decline in face-to-face human interactions.
    • B Students' use of phones and computers for academic activities in class.
    • C Improved grades resulting from more efficient communication.
    • D A reduction in sleep, which can result in poor health and weight gain.
    • E The complete replacement of real-life conversations by social media.
    • F The immediate failure of all classroom equipment.

该项准确承接作者以 most dramatic impact 强调的核心后果,并保留了后续因果链:reduction in sleep 进一步 leads to poor health and weight gain。障碍在于正确项没有机械重复 amount of sleep,而是改写为 a reduction in sleep;同时用 can result in 处理原文的 leads to。

What does the author warn may happen if the current minor problems are ignored?

    • A Technology will cease to be a useful tool for future generations.
    • B All young people will stop using smartphones and computers.
    • C The existing problems will disappear as technology develops.
    • D Students will immediately improve their productivity and sleep patterns.
    • E The negative effects on the future generation may become much greater.
    • F Social media will become the only form of human interaction.

该项保留了条件句主句的预测核心:effect on the future generation is going to be much bigger。 Technology is a great tool

它列举了 electronics 导致的一系列 consequences:decline in human interactions,通过 social media 代替 real-life conversations;academic problems,因为 non-academic activities during class 导致 poor grades;还有 health issues,特别是 sleep reduction 引发的 poor health 和 weight gain。这种 comprehensive coverage 构成了 main body of argument。

作为 body paragraph,这个意群 develops the argument by providing multiple supporting points。

首先 acknowledge technology as a great tool,展现 balanced perspective,然后用 'however' 转折强调 recognize downsides 的 importance。它 summarizes key problems(lack of sleep,reduction of productivity,weight gain)并用 'only a few' 暗示 problems 的 extensiveness。最后通过 conditional warning('If we're not careful')将 current minor problems 和 future consequences 联系起来,创造 sense of urgency,这是典型的 concluding strategy。

作为 conclusion,这个意群不仅 recaps the main negative impacts,更重要的是 elevates the discussion 到 future implications。通过 forward-looking warning,它给 entire argument 一个 sense of significance 和 urgency。'If we're not careful' 这个 conditional structure 隐含了 call to action,督促 readers 要 take these issues seriously,完成了从 presenting problems 到 motivating awareness 的 rhetorical goal。

    议论文的 conclusion 会明确 author's position,通过 warning tone 和 future-oriented concerns(effect on future generation)来强化 urgency,这直接揭示文章的 ultimate message

主旨信号词 disruptive effects P1 decline P2 however P3 if we're not careful P3

MAIN IDEA · 主旨

WORD INFERENCE ·

这个 concrete example 让抽象的 negative impact 变得 tangible and convincing,直接 support 了 smartphones 会 interfere with concentration 这一 central argument。

信号词 study experiment research case instance example for instance for example such as take...as an example evidence shows data indicates

描述时要包含 specific details:who conducted it、what the setup was、what happened。模版:In a [study/experiment/case] carried out by [authority], [specific situation] was observed. The results showed that [specific outcome], which demonstrates [your main point]。

Use of electronics...lead to a decline"、"which leads to poor grades"、"which leads to poor health" 这些 explicit causal links 构建了一个 logical chain, showing how one problem cascades into another。这种 cause-and-effect reasoning 让 reader 理解 technology overuse 不是 isolated issue,而是会 trigger 一系列 interconnected problems, effectively supporting 文章的 main thesis about technology's negative impacts。

信号词 lead to leads to result in cause because since as a result consequently therefore thus hence due to owing to bring about contribute to

仿写: 写 causal argument 时要 build chains 而不只是 state single connections。从一个 initial cause 出发,show 它 leads to immediate effect,然后 explain 这个 effect 又 becomes the cause of further consequences。 [Action A] leads to [Effect B]. This [Effect B], in turn, results in [Effect C], which ultimately causes [Final Consequence D]。记住要 establish plausibility:每个 causal link 都要 make sense。

    P3

第三段用 "Lack of sleep, reduction of productivity and weight gain" 这组 parallel structure 来 emphasize technology 的 multiple negative outcomes。三个 noun phrases 形成 rhythmic repetition, creating a sense of accumulation and gravity。这种 parallelism 让 reader 感受到 problems 的 quantity and weight, reinforcing 作者关于 consequences are serious and multifaceted 的 point。Repetitive structure 也使 message more memorable and impactful。

信号词 and as well as both...and not only...but also neither...nor whether...or comma series

然后 use the same grammatical structure for each:可以是 noun phrases ("reduction of X, loss of Y, decline of Z")、verb phrases、或 clauses。确保 each element 有 similar length and weight 以 maintain rhythm。模版:[Consequence A], [Consequence B], and [Consequence C] are only a few [problems/benefits/effects]。或者:The [noun] of X, the [noun] of Y, and the [noun] of Z all contribute to [main point]。

    P1

第一段通过 compare two groups of students under different conditions 来 highlight smartphones 的 disruptive power。One group had phones "in their line of sight",另一 group had phones "moved away" 但 experienced a phone ringing。通过 juxtapose 这两个 scenarios 和它们的 different outcomes ("unable to focus" vs. better performance),作者 effectively demonstrates 即使 phones 不在 immediate reach, mere awareness of them 就能 significantly impair performance。这个 stark contrast 让 negative effect more obvious and convincing。

信号词 however but while whereas on the other hand in contrast conversely unlike rather than instead of compared to different from

仿写: 创建 effective contrast 时,选择 two comparable situations that differ in one key variable。Describe each situation with similar level of detail 以 maintain balance。Use contrastive markers 让 comparison explicit。描述时 highlight the key difference 和 resulting outcomes。模版:While [Group A/Situation A] experienced [Outcome X], [Group B/Situation B] showed [Contrasting Outcome Y], demonstrating that [your point]。或者:Unlike [X], which leads to [result], [Y] results in [contrasting result]。

    P2

第二段还呈现了 "Rather than having real-life conversations, many express emotions...through social media" 这一 causal relationship, showing electronics use causes a shift from face-to-face 到 digital communication。这个 cause-effect link 直接 supports 作者关于 technology leads to decline in human interactions 的 argument。通过 establish 这个 causality,作者 explains the mechanism behind social deterioration, making the criticism of technology more具体 and grounded。

信号词 rather than instead of lead to cause result in bring about give rise to contribute to because since as a result

仿写: 写 causal argument 时要 build chains 而不只是 state single connections。从一个 initial cause 出发,show 它 leads to immediate effect,然后 explain 这个 effect 又 becomes the cause of further consequences。 Rather than [Expected Action A], [Subject] [Alternative Action B], which results in [Negative Consequence C]。或者:The prevalence of [X] has caused [Y], leading to [further consequence Z]。

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
The first group was told to complete the puzzles with its participants' smartphones in their line of sight. The second group, however, was told that the phones would interfere with the equipment...

转折类 however but yet nevertheless nonetheless on the other hand in contrast

对 main thesis 的 contribution 是:为 'disruptive effects of smartphones' 提供了 empirical evidence,证明 negative impact 的 pervasiveness 和 severity,为后文的 broader social impacts 奠定 scientific foundation。

    P1
Many of the students in that group were unable to focus from then on, becoming anxious and performing more poorly than the first group.

情态词/能力否定类 unable to focus unable to cannot fail to incapable of could not impossible to

这个 'unable to focus' 配合 experimental comparison 传递的 implication 是:smartphones 的 disruptive power 已经 internalized,不需要 actual interaction 就能 trigger anxiety 和 performance decline。

    P3
Lack of sleep, reduction of productivity and weight gain are only a few.

模糊限制语 only a few just merely simply hardly barely at least

这个 'only a few' 的 implication 是:technology 的 negative impacts 远不止文中 mentioned 的这几个,它们是 representative examples 而非 exhaustive list。 这种 hedging 让 argument 更 credible,因为 acknowledge limitations,但同时通过 implication 传递 'the real situation is even worse' 的 message,为最后的 call to action 铺垫 - 如果现在不 careful about these 'minor' problems, future consequence 会 much bigger。

    P3
If we're not careful about all these minor problems right now, the effect on the future generation is going to be much bigger.

If we're not careful if we're not careful if we fail to unless we act without proper attention if left unchecked should we ignore

这个 conditional warning 的 implication layers 包括:1) Current situation 已经 deteriorating - 我们已经 not careful enough;2) 问题有 exponential growth trajectory - 'minor' 会变成 'much bigger';3) Intergenerational impact creates moral urgency;4) Call to action is implicit but clear - recognize downsides 并 take preventive measures。对 thesis 的 conclusive value 是:提供 forward-looking perspective, transform factual observation about current impacts into urgent social concern。 The implication 是:这不仅是 individual choice 的问题,而是 collective responsibility 和 future well-being 的问题。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

  • disruptive P1

  • decline P2

  • the most dramatic impact P2

    同类词 even more far worse

  • however P3

    同类词 but yet although

  • if we're not careful P3

这种以 research findings 开头来 establish 一个 problem 的方式是 argumentative writing 的典型 opening strategy,而 expository writing 会直接 define smartphones 或 explain 它们的 functions, news reports 则会用 who-what-when-where 的 lead 来 summarize 最新的 event。

第2段 列举了 electronics 带来的 multiple negative effects:decline in human interactions、poor grades、reduction in sleep 等。 如果是说明文,会 objectively explain 电子设备的 features 和 how they work;如果是新闻,会 focus on 某个 specific event 而不是 generalized consequences。

第3段 明确表达了作者的 stance:"it's important to recognize its downsides" 和 warning:"If we're not careful...the effect on the future generation is going to be much bigger"。

这三个段落形成了完整的 argumentative structure:第1段 用 empirical study establish the problem,第2段 expand 这个 problem 的 scope 和 severity,第3段 deliver the main argument 和 call for awareness。
