Part III Section C (2)
Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.
Passage Two
Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.
P1People have grown taller over the last century, with South Korean women shooting up by more than 20cm on average, and Iranian men gaining 16.5cm. A global study looked at the average height of 18-year-olds in 200 countries between 1914 and 2014.

P2The results reveal that while Swedes were the tallest people in the world in 1914, Dutch men have risen from 12th place to claim top spot with an average height of 182.5cm. Latvian women, meanwhile, rose from 28th place in 1914 to become the tallest in the world a century later, with an average height of 169.8cm.

P3James Bentham, a co-author of the research from Imperial College, London, says the global trend is likely to be due primarily to improvements in nutrition and healthcare. "An individual's genetics has a big influence on their height, but once you average over whole populations, genetics plays a less key role," he added.

P4A little extra height brings a number of advantages, says Elio Riboli of Imperial College. "Being taller is associated with longer life expectancy," he said. "This is largely due to a lower risk of dying of cardiovascular(心血管的) disease among taller people."

P5But while height has increased around the world, the trend in many countries of north and sub-Saharan Africa causes concern, says Riboli. While height increased in Uganda and Niger during the early 20th century, the trend has reversed in recent years, with height decreasing among 18-year-olds.

P6"One reason for these decreases in height is the economic situation in the 1980s," said Alexander Moradi of the University of Sussex. The nutritional and health crises that followed the policy of structural adjustment, he says, led to many children and teenagers failing to reach their full potential in terms of height.

P7Bentham believes the global trend of increasing height has important implications. "How tall we are now is strongly influenced by the environment we grew up in," he said. "If we give children the best possible start in life now, they will be healthier and more productive for decades to come."

51.
What does the global study tell us about people's height in the last hundred years?
A)There is a remarkable difference across continents.
B)There has been a marked increase in most countries.
C)The increase in people's height has been quickening.
D)The increase in women's height is bigger than in men's.

B(细节题)

题干 What does the global study tell us about people's height in the last hundred years?

句子主干是 "the global study tell us [what]",间接宾语 about people's height in the last hundred years 限定追问范围;整句平铺直叙,无陷阱。

P1

People have grown taller over the last century, with South Korean women shooting up by more than 20cm on average, and Iranian men gaining 16.5cm.

    • People have grown taller over the last centuryThere has been a marked increase in most countries

There has been a marked increase in most countries

52.
What does James Bentham say about genetics in the increase of people's height?
A)It counts less than generally thought.
B)It outweighs nutrition and healthcare.
C)It impacts more on an individual than on a population.
D)It plays a more significant role in females than in males.

James Bentham

C(细节题)

题干 What does James Bentham say about genetics in the increase of people's height?

主干是 "James Bentham say what about genetics";介词短语 in the increase of people's height 是对 genetics 的范围限定,提示只关心"身高增长这一议题下"的遗传角色。

P3

An individual's genetics has a big influence on their height, but once you average over whole populations, genetics plays a less key role.

    • An individual's genetics has a big influence on their height, but once you average over whole populations, genetics plays a less key roleIt impacts more on an individual than on a population

It impacts more on an individual than on a population

Bentham 全程未把遗传作用按性别拆分,原文也无任何 females/males 的字样;more significant role in females than in males 凭空增加性别维度。

53.
What does Elio Riboli say about taller people?
A)They tend to live longer.
B)They enjoy an easier life.
C)They generally risk fewer fatal diseases.
D)They have greater expectations in life.

Elio Riboli

A(细节题)

题干 What does Elio Riboli say about taller people?

主干 "Elio Riboli say what about taller people";taller 是 tall 的比较级,提示原文很可能用 "taller""being taller" 等比较结构来描述同一对象。

P4

Being taller is associated with longer life expectancy. This is largely due to a lower risk of dying of cardiovascular(心血管的) disease among taller people.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • Being taller is associated with longer life expectancyThey tend to live longer

They tend to live longer

原文谈的是 "life expectancy"(预期寿命,客观统计量),不是"对生活的期待";greater expectations in life 利用 expectation 这个多义词制造错觉。

54.
What do we learn about 18-year-olds in Uganda and Niger?
A)They grow up slower than their peers in other countries.
B)They are actually shorter than their earlier generations.
C)They find it hard to bring their potential into full play.
D)They have experienced many changes of government.

B(细节题)

题干 What do we learn about 18-year-olds in Uganda and Niger?

主干 "we learn what about 18-year-olds";地点状语 in Uganda and Niger 限定人群范围;句中无比较级、无否定,结构清楚。

P5

While height increased in Uganda and Niger during the early 20th century, the trend has reversed in recent years, with height decreasing among 18-year-olds.

原文只说本国趋势反转,未与"其他国家同龄人"做生长速度对比;grow up slower than their peers in other countries 引入文中没有的跨国比较。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • the trend has reversed in recent years, with height decreasing among 18-year-oldsThey are actually shorter than their earlier generations

They are actually shorter than their earlier generations

原文第六段 led to many children and teenagers failing to reach their full potential in terms of height 谈的是成因机制,不是题干"我们了解到"的主结论;把成因端伪装成结论端就成了答非所问。

55.
What does James Bentham suggest we do?
A)Watch closely the global trend in children's development.
B)Make sure that our children grow up to their full height.
C)Try every means possible to improve our environment.
D)Ensure our children grow up in an ideal environment.

James Bentham

D(细节题)

题干 What does James Bentham suggest we do?

主干 "James Bentham suggest [we do what]";suggest 后是省略 that 的宾语从句,从句省略了情态动词 should,要求把建议内容客观读出。

P7

If we give children the best possible start in life now, they will be healthier and more productive for decades to come.

Bentham 谈的是"健康与高效"等综合发展,并未把目标设定为"让孩子长到极限身高";grow up to their full height 把第六段 reach their full potential in terms of height 的措辞挪到建议端,但那是讲非洲反例的成因,不是 Bentham 给的建议。

    • If we give children the best possible start in life now, they will be healthier and more productive for decades to comeEnsure our children grow up in an ideal environment

Ensure our children grow up in an ideal environment
