Essay-Grading Software Offers Professors a Break

Imagine taking a college exam, and, instead of handing in a blue book and getting a grade from a professor a few weeks later, clicking the "send" button when you are done and receiving a grade back instantly, your essay scored by a software program. And then, instead of being done with that exam, imagine that the system would immediately let you rewrite the test to try to improve your grade.

EdX, the nonprofit enterprise founded by Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to offer courses on the Internet, has just introduced such a system and will make its automated(自动的) software available free on the Web to any institution that wants to use it. The software uses artificial intelligence to grade student essays and short written answers, freeing professors for other tasks.

The new service will bring the educational consortium(联盟) into a growing conflict over the role of automation in education. Although automated grading systems for multiple-choice and true-false tests are now widespread, the use of artificial intelligence technology to grade essay answers has not yet received widespread acceptance by educators and has many critics.

Anant Agarwal, an electrical engineer who is president of EdX, predicted that the instant-grading software would be a useful teaching tool, enabling students to take tests and write essays over and over and improve the quality of their answers. He said the technology would offer distinct advantages over the traditional classroom system, where students often wait days or weeks for grades. "There is a huge value in learning with instant feedback," Dr. Agarwal said. "Students are telling us they learn much better with instant feedback."

But skeptics(怀疑者) argue the automated system is no match for live teachers. One longtime critic, Les Perelman, has drawn national attention several times for putting together nonsense essays that have fooled software grading programs into giving high marks. He has also been highly critical of studies claiming that the software compares well to human graders.

He is among a group of educators who last month began circulating a petition(呼吁) opposing automated assessment software. The group, which calls itself Professionals Against Machine Scoring of Student Essays in High-Stakes Assessment, has collected nearly 2,000 signatures, including some from famous people like Noam Chomsky.

"Let's face the realities of automatic essay scoring," the group's statement reads in part. "Computers cannot 'read'. They cannot measure the essentials of effective written communication: accuracy, reasoning, adequacy of evidence, good sense, ethical(伦理的) position, convincing argument, meaningful organization, and clarity, among others."

But EdX expects its software to be adopted widely by schools and universities. It offers free online classes from Harvard, MIT and the University of California-Berkeley; this fall, it will add classes from Wellesley, Georgetown and the University of Texas. In all, 12 universities participate in EdX, which offers certificates for course completion and has said that it plans to continue to expand next year, including adding international schools.

The EdX assessment tool requires human teachers, or graders, to first grade 100 essays or essay questions. The system then uses a variety of machine-learning techniques to train itself to be able to grade any number of essays or answers automatically and almost instantly. The software will assign a grade depending on the scoring system created by the teacher, whether it is a letter grade or numerical(数字的) rank.

EdX is not the first to use the automated assessment technology, which dates to early computers in the 1960s. There is now a range of companies offering commercial programs to grade written test answers, and four states—Louisiana, North Dakota, Utah and West Virginia—are using some form of the technology in secondary schools. A fifth, Indiana, has experimented with it. In some cases the software is used as a "second reader," to check the reliability of the human graders.

But the growing influence of the EdX consortium to set standards is likely to give the technology a boost. On Tuesday, Stanford announced that it would work with EdX to develop a joint educational system that will make use of the automated assessment technology.

Two start-ups, Coursera and Udacity, recently founded by Stanford faculty members to create "massive open online courses," or MOOCs, are also committed to automated assessment systems because of the value of instant feedback. "It allows students to get immediate feedback on their work, so that learning turns into a game, with students naturally(吸引) drawn toward resubmitting the work until they get it right," said Daphne Koller, a computer scientist and a founder of Coursera.

Last year the Hewlett Foundation, a grant-making organization set up by one of the Hewlett-Packard founders and his wife, sponsored two $100,000 prizes aimed at improving software that grades essays and short answers. More than 150 teams entered each category. A winner of one of the Hewlett contests, Vik Paruchuri, was hired by EdX to help design its assessment software.

"One of our focuses is to help kids learn how to think critically," said Victor Vuchic, a program officer at the Hewlett Foundation. "It's probably impossible to do that with multiple-choice tests. The challenge is that this requires human graders, and so they cost a lot more and they take a lot more time."

Mark D. Shermis, a professor at the University of Akron in Ohio, supervised the Hewlett Foundation's contest on automated essay scoring and wrote a paper about the experiment. In his view, the technology—though imperfect—has a place in educational settings.

With increasingly large classes, it is impossible for most teachers to give students meaningful feedback on writing assignments, he said. Plus, he noted, critics of the technology have tended to come from the nation's best universities, where the level of teaching is much better than at most schools.

"Often they come from very famous institutions where, in fact, they do a much better job of providing feedback than a machine ever could," Dr. Shermis said. "There seems to be a lack of appreciation of what is actually going on in the real world."

这是 inverted pyramid structure 中的 most crucial information block, directly address 了主旨中提到的 EdX introduces automated essay-grading software。

这个 paragraph provide 了 broader context,指出 EdX 的 service 会 bring consortium into a growing conflict over automation in education。虽然 multiple-choice tests 的 automated grading 已经 widespread,但 AI grading essays 还 has not received widespread acceptance 并且 has many critics。

这个意群 set up 了主旨中提到的 sparking debate,为后续 detailed coverage of supporters and critics 提供了 necessary background。在新闻报道中,这种 contextualizing paragraph 帮助 readers understand 为什么这个 announcement is significant and controversial。

他 emphasize 的 key advantages 包括:students 能 repeatedly practice and improve, instant feedback 比 traditional system(wait days or weeks)有 huge value,而且 students learn much better 这种方式。

这个意群 directly address 主旨中的 supporters highlight benefits of instant feedback。在 balanced news reporting 中,presenting both sides 是 essential,这里 start 了 point-counterpoint structure,让 readers 看到 technology advocates 的 reasoning。

他的 actions include fooling software with nonsense essays 和 criticizing studies,而且 joined 一个 educator group 来 circulate petition against automated assessment。

    这个意群 correspond 到主旨中的 critics argue...questioning the technology's reliability。通过 concrete examples(Perelman's experiments)和 organized opposition(petition),这部分 substantiate 了 critical perspective,让 debate 更加 tangible and credible。

这个 paragraph present 了 opposition group's formal statement,通过 direct quote 来 articulate 他们的 core argument:"Computers cannot 'read'",无法 measure effective writing 的 essentials 比如 accuracy, reasoning, adequacy of evidence, good sense 等等。

这个意群 directly correspond 主旨中的 critics argue computers cannot assess essential writing qualities like reasoning and argumentation。通过 quoting official statement,这部分 give voice to opposition's theoretical foundation,让 debate 从 actions 进入 substantive arguments level。

这个 paragraph shift back to EdX perspective, emphasize 该 software expected to be widely adopted。列举了 participating universities(Harvard, MIT, UC Berkeley, Wellesley 等 12 universities)和 expansion plans(international schools),showing EdX's growing influence 和 momentum。

在 news structure 中,这种 factual update about implementation 为 debate 提供了 concrete context,让 readers 了解 stakes and scale。

这个 paragraph provide technical explanation of how EdX assessment tool works:需要 human teachers 先 grade 100 essays,然后 system uses machine-learning techniques 来 train itself,最后能 automatically grade 并 assign grades based on teacher's scoring system。这是 behind-the-scenes look at the technology。

虽然主旨没有 explicitly mention technical details,但这个意群 provide necessary understanding of how the system actually works,让 readers 能够 better evaluate 前面提到的 both supporters' claims 和 critics' concerns。

这两个 paragraphs provide historical context 和 current landscape:technology dates back to 1960s,现在有 range of commercial programs,四个 states 已经 using 这种 technology in secondary schools。还提到 Stanford 会 work with EdX 来 develop joint system,以及 EdX's growing influence to set standards。这是 from past to present 的 context building。

这个意群 contextualize 主旨中提到的 technology 和 its growing adoption, show 这不是 brand new idea 而是 evolving field with existing applications。在 news reporting 中,这种 historical and current landscape 帮助 readers gauge significance and trajectory。

这个 paragraph introduce 其他 players(Coursera and Udacity)也 committed to automated assessment,并且 explain their motivation through Daphne Koller's quote:instant feedback 让 learning 变成 game, students naturally drawn to resubmit until correct。这是 industry-wide trend 的 evidence。

这个意群 further support 主旨中的 growing adoption, show EdX 不是 isolated case。通过 another supporter's voice(Koller),它 also reinforce instant feedback argument,与前面的 Agarwal 形成 echo, demonstrate broader consensus among technology adopters。

这个 paragraph describe Hewlett Foundation's role in promoting technology:sponsored two $100,000 prizes for improving grading software, attracted over 150 teams,而且 winner Vik Paruchuri 被 EdX hired 来 design assessment software。这 show financial and talent support behind the technology。

虽然主旨没有 explicitly mention funding,这个意群 reveal institutional and financial infrastructure supporting the technology's development,让 readers understand it's backed by 不仅是 individual organizations 还有 philanthropic support, which add credibility and momentum。

这三个 paragraphs present 支持方更 nuanced 和 pragmatic arguments,通过 multiple voices(Hewlett's Victor Vuchic, contest supervisor Mark Shermis)。他们的 points include:technology 帮助 kids learn critical thinking(multiple-choice 做不到),human grading too costly and time-consuming,large classes 让 meaningful feedback impossible,而且 critics 往往来自 elite universities 而 lack appreciation of real world challenges。

这个意群 provide 更 sophisticated defense of technology,不只是 instant feedback benefit,而是 address practical constraints(cost, scale, teaching quality variation)。这让 debate 更 balanced and realistic,也 implicitly counter critics' concerns by acknowledging imperfection but arguing for practical necessity。

MAIN IDEA ·

接着,文章用consortium来refer to EdX这个educational entity。

这个document能够collect thousands of signatures,说明它是用来gather public support的formal instrument。 所有这些都converge到一个conclusion:petition是一种formal written request,usually signed by many people,用来express collective opinion或demand某种action。

在列举的qualities中,ethical position和accuracy, reasoning这些logical elements并列出现,但它represents a different dimension。这不是about factual correctness,而是about某种moral或value-based standpoint。 所有evidence point to同一个meaning:ethical涉及moral principles或values的judgment,是关于right and wrong的dimension,超越了pure logical reasoning。

EdX作为prestigious educational consortium进入这个field,会give the technology某种effect。随后我们看到Stanford和其他major platforms纷纷join in或commit to这个technology。 Give something a boost在这个context中,明显表示provide某种upward push或positive stimulus。

Instant feedback creates a game-like environment,在这个environment中,students naturally表现出certain behavior pattern。他们被pull toward不断resubmitting work。 整个context描述的是一种magnetic effect,students feel naturally inclined或attracted to keep trying。Draw在这里是its past participle form,表示被吸引的passive state。

Imagine Suppose What if Picture this Consider Envision

仿写: 写作 news report 时,可以用 imagine/suppose/what if 等 signal words 开篇。比如报道 AI technology,可以说:Imagine a world where... 关键是让 scenario 足够 specific and vivid。 这样能让 technical topics 更 accessible to general readers。

    P2 P8

文章在 第2段 介绍 EdX 时,明确说明它是 nonprofit enterprise founded by Harvard and MIT,并解释其 mission 是 offer courses on the Internet。

信号词 founded by established by created by launched by introduced by developed by set up by

仿写: 报道 new technology or initiative 时,第二段通常是 ideal position 来插入 background context。使用 appositive phrases(如 the nonprofit enterprise founded by...)或 relative clauses 来 efficiently pack information。模版:[主体], the [性质] [founded/established/created] by [权威机构] to [目的], has [最新动作].

    P4 P7 P12 P14 P17

文章多次使用 direct quotations from key stakeholders,包括 EdX president Dr. Agarwal(第4段)、critic Les Perelman 的 opponents(第7段)、Coursera founder Daphne Koller(第12段)等。这些 quotes 提供 first-hand perspectives,让 abstract debate 变得 concrete and personal。通过 balancing quotes from supporters and critics,文章维持 journalistic objectivity 同时增强 credibility and engagement。

信号词 said noted argued stated explained predicted claimed emphasized pointed out observed

仿写: 报道 controversial topics 时,strategic use of quotes 至关重要。 注意 sandwich structure:先用 your words 介绍 context,然后 insert quote,最后 add interpretation if needed。确保 quotes from opposing sides 获得 roughly equal space 来 maintain balance。

    P4 P5 P6 P7

文章通过 juxtaposing supporters and skeptics 的 viewpoints 来构建 central tension。第4段 展示 proponents 强调 instant feedback 的 advantages,而 第5段-7 immediately follow with critics' concerns about accuracy and ethical issues。这种 structural contrast 让 debate 的 two sides 清晰呈现,帮助读者理解 complexity of the issue,体现 balanced journalism 的原则。

But However Yet On the other hand In contrast While Whereas Conversely Nevertheless

先介绍 one perspective with supporting evidence and quotes,然后用 transition words(but, however, skeptics argue)引入 opposing view。模版:[Supporters] argue that [观点A] because [理由]. However, [critics] contend that [相反观点B], citing [evidence]. 这种 balanced presentation 让 article 更 credible and comprehensive。

    P6 P8 P9 P10 P13

文章使用 specific numbers and statistics 来增强 credibility,如 nearly 2,000 signatures on petition(第6段),100 essays needed for training(第9段),four states using the technology(第10段),two $100,000 prizes(第13段)。这些 concrete figures 把 abstract claims 转化为 verifiable facts,帮助读者理解 scale and significance of the issue,体现 rigorous journalism standards。

信号词 nearly more than over approximately about around roughly up to as many as

仿写: 报道 trends or initiatives 时,strategically place specific numbers 来 anchor abstract concepts。 或:More than [数字] [entities] have [participated/adopted/signed]. 关键是选择 most impactful numbers 而非 list all available data。数字应该 support narrative flow 而非 interrupt it,通常放在 supporting details position rather than opening sentences。

    P2 P9 P10

文章使用 neutral, factual language 来描述 technological process,如 第9段 详细解释 EdX assessment tool 的 working mechanism:requires human grading of 100 essays, uses machine-learning techniques, assigns grades automatically。

仿写: 描述 technical processes or systems 时,使用 clear, sequential language。模版:The [system/tool] requires [前提条件], then uses [技术/方法] to [功能], and [结果]. 避免 evaluative words(amazing, problematic),stick to descriptive verbs(uses, requires, assigns, processes)。可以使用 technical terms 但要 provide enough context for general readers。Focus on how something works rather than whether it's good or bad。

    P14
It's probably impossible to do that with multiple-choice tests. The challenge is that this requires human graders, and so they cost a lot more and they take a lot more time.

委婉否定+成本对比 probably impossible, requires human graders, cost a lot more, take a lot more time probably impossible requires cost take time challenge difficult

    P15
In his view, the technology—though imperfect—has a place in educational settings.

让步肯定 though imperfect—has a place though imperfect has a place not perfect but even so nevertheless

    P16
critics of the technology have tended to come from the nation's best universities, where the level of teaching is much better than at most schools.

身份对比(群体区隔) critics ... have tended to come from the nation's best universities, much better than at most schools tended to best universities much better than at most schools critics level of teaching

    P17
There seems to be a lack of appreciation of what is actually going on in the real world.

模糊限制+反衬 seems, lack of appreciation, actually, real world seems lack of appreciation actually real world appears

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

结论先行:本文作者态度为客观中立( cautiously balanced but implicitly skeptical of over-reliance on automated grading)。

    新闻报道的核心写作规范是 balance(平衡性)和 objectivity(客观性),记者通常不会直接 express personal opinions(表达个人观点),而是通过 presenting multiple perspectives(呈现多方立场)来构建文章。

第3段 中 "Although automated grading systems for multiple-choice and true-false tests are now widespread, the use of AI technology to grade essay answers has not yet received widespread acceptance",作者先让步承认 multiple-choice 系统的普及,然后用 although...has not yet 将重点落在 essay grading 尚未被接受上,为后文的争议铺垫。第5段 的 "But skeptics argue..."、第11段 的 "But the growing influence...is likely to give the technology a boost" 等都构成了 argumentative rhythm(论证节奏)的转换节点,帮助读者追踪作者的 logical flow(逻辑走向)。

支持自动评分的 Dr. Agarwal 被介绍为 "an electrical engineer who is president of EdX"(EdX主席,电气工程师),体现 authority(权威性);Daphne Koller 被称为 "a computer scientist and a founder of Coursera",同样附有 professional credentials(专业资质)。 这种 asymmetric credentialing(不对称的资质标注)透露出作者对两方的 differential trust(差异化信任)。

本文作者并未明确 advocate(倡导)或 condemn(谴责),而是在 journalistic objectivity(新闻客观性)的外衣下,通过多种 subtle signals(微妙信号)传递出对 technology adoption(技术应用)的 cautious optimism(审慎乐观),以及对 blanket criticism(一概而论的批评)的 quiet pushback(低调反驳)。

  • has not yet received widespread acceptance P3

同类词 has many critics not yet still controversial remains debated is yet to be proven

  • skeptics argue P5

同类词 critics claim opponents contend detractors insist doubters suggest naysayers believe

  • is likely to give the technology a boost P11

同类词 is likely to give a boost is expected to advance is set to accelerate is poised to expand will further promote

  • though imperfect—has a place in educational settings P15

    这是一个 concessive structure(让步结构):"though imperfect"(尽管不完美)是 concession(让步),"has a place"(有其位置/价值)是 main assertion(主要断言)。

同类词 though imperfect, has a place despite its flaws, remains valuable while not ideal, serves a purpose even if limited, contributes to admittedly flawed but still useful

  • there seems to be a lack of appreciation of what is actually going on in the real world P17

这是全文的 closing quote(结尾引语),也是全文最强烈的 implicit criticism(隐性批评)信号。 在新闻报道中,ending paragraph(结尾段)的引语选取是作者 editorial judgment(编辑判断)最集中的体现,反映其真实的 final verdict(最终判断)。

同类词 lack of appreciation of reality out of touch with the real world fail to see the bigger picture ignore the practical constraints overlook the ground realities

  • distinct advantages over the traditional classroom system P4

这表明作者认为该 claim 值得被读者重点关注,体现了 selective amplification(选择性放大)的 editorial technique(编辑技巧)。

本文 title 提到 essay-grading software offers professors a break,这是 a concrete development。第1段 用 imagine 开头描述 a new testing system,直接引入 the specific scenario,而非 argue 某个观点或 explain 某个现象的原理。议论文会开门见山提 controversial statement,说明文会先 define the topic,但新闻报道会直奔 the newsworthy event。

议论文可能会 discuss abstract concepts 或 general groups,说明文会 focus on mechanisms 而非 specific actors。这里 EdX 是 the clear subject,并且用了 has just introduced 这样的 present perfect tense,显示 the recency of the event。

  3. 新闻报道追求 balanced coverage,会 quote different stakeholders 来 show both sides。议论文会 primarily defend one position,虽然可能 address counterarguments,但目的是 refute them。说明文会 focus on factual explanation 而非 present debates。这里明显是 reporting on a controversy,而非 arguing for one side。

说明文也会有 data,但侧重于 illustrate how things work。 新闻的 data 是为了 document what happened,它们是 the story itself 的一部分,而非 supporting arguments。这里的 numbers 和 names 是在 report the facts of the situation,不是在 build a logical case。

这些 time markers 显示文章在 tracking an ongoing story 和 reporting on its evolution。议论文会 focus on timeless principles,说明文会 describe processes 而非 chronicle events。新闻需要 situate the story in time 来 show its relevance 和 currency。

  6. 本文完全符合这些 characteristics:它 reports on EdX's new software(the event),names specific institutions 和 individuals, presents both supporters 和 critics, provides factual details about adoption 和 history,并 tracks the timeline from past to future。没有 authorial judgment 说 this is good or bad,也没有 step-by-step explanation of how the technology works in detail,而是 documenting a developing story。
