Do In-Class Exams Make Students Study Harder?

I have always been a poor test-taker. So it may seem rather strange that I have returned to college to finish the degree I left undone some four decades ago. I am making my way through Columbia University, surrounded by students who quickly supply the verbal answer while I am still processing the question.

Since there is no way for me to avoid exams, I am currently questioning what kind of exams are the most taxing and ultimately beneficial. I have already sweated through numerous in-class midterms and finals, and now I have a professor who issues take-home ones. I was excited when I learned this, figuring I had a full week to do the research, read the texts, and write it all up. In fact, I was still rewriting my midterm the morning it was due. To say I had lost the thread is putting it mildly.

As I was suffering through my week of anxiety, overthinking the material and guessing my grasp of it, I did some of my own polling among students and professors. David Eisenbach, who teaches a popular class on U.S. presidents at Columbia, prefers the in-class variety. He believes students ultimately learn more and encourages them to form study groups. "That way they socialize over history outside the class, which wouldn't happen without the pressure of an in-class exam," he explained, "Furthermore, in-class exams force students to learn how to perform under pressure, an essential work skill."

He also says there is less chance of cheating with the in-class variety. In 2012, 125 students at Harvard were caught up in a scandal when it was discovered they had cheated on a take-home exam for a class entitled "Introduction To Congress." Some colleges have what they call an "honor code," though if you are smart enough to get into these schools, you are either smart enough to get around any codes or hopefully, too ethical to consider doing so. As I sat blocked and clueless for two solid days, I momentarily wondered if I couldn't just call an expert on the subject matter which I was tackling, or someone who took the class previously, to get me going.

Following the Harvard scandal, Mary Miller, the former dean of students at Yale, made an impassioned appeal to her school's professors to refrain from take-home exams. "Students risk health and well being, as well as performance in other end-of-term work, when faculty offers take-home exams without clear, time-limited boundaries," she told me. "Research now shows that regular quizzes, short essays, and other assignments over the course of a term better enhance learning and retention."

Most college professors agree the kind of exam they choose largely depends on the subject. A quantitative-based one, for example, is unlikely to be sent home, where one could ask their older brothers and sisters to help. Vocational-type classes, such as computer science or journalism, on the other hand, are often more research-oriented and lend themselves to take-home testing. Chris Koch, who teaches "History of Broadcast Journalism" at Montgomery Community College in Rockville, Maryland, points out that reporting is about investigation rather than the memorization of minute details. "In my field, it's not what you know—it's what you know how to find out," says Koch. "There is way too much information, and more coming all the time, for anyone to remember. I want my students to search out the answers to questions by using all the resources available to them."

Students' test-form preferences vary, too, often depending on the subject and course difficulty. "I prefer take-home essays because it is then really about the writing, so you have time to edit and do more research," says Elizabeth Dresser, a junior at Barnard. Then there is the stress factor. Francesca Haass, a senior at Middlebury, says, "I find the in-class ones are more stressful in the short term, but there is immediate relief as you swallow information like mad, and then you get to forget it all. Take-homes require thoughtful engagement which can lead to longer term stress as there is never a moment when the time is up." Meanwhile, Olivia Rubin, a sophomore at Emory, says she hardly even considers take-homes true exams. "If you understand the material and have the ability to articulate(说出) your thoughts, they should be a breeze."

How students ultimately handle tests may depend on their personal test-taking abilities. There are people who always wait until the last minute, and make it much harder than it needs to be. And then there are those who, not knowing what questions are coming at them, and having no resources to refer to, can freeze. And then there are we rare folks who fit both those descriptions.

Yes, my advanced age must factor into the equation(等式), in part because of my inability to access the information as quickly. As another returning student at Columbia, Kate Marber, told me, "We are learning not only all this information, but essentially how to learn again. Our fellow students have just come out of high school. A lot has changed since we were last in school."

If nothing else, the situation has given my college son and me something to share. When I asked his opinion on this matter, "I like in-class exams because the time is already reserved, as opposed to using my free time at home to work on a test," he responded. It seems to me that a compromise would be receiving the exam questions a day or two in advance, and then doing the actual test in class with the ticking clock overhead.

Better yet, how about what one Hunter College professor reportedly did recently for her final exam: She encouraged the class not to stress or even study, promising that, "It is going to be a piece of cake." When the students came in, sharpened pencils in hand, there was not a bluebook in sight. Rather, they saw a large chocolate cake and they each were given a slice.

  1. P1

    A Returning Student's Test Anxiety

The narrator introduces her test anxiety as a returning student.

  2. P2

The Hidden Stress of Take-Home Exams

The narrator discovers that a take-home exam can create more anxiety than expected.

  3. P3

The Learning Benefits of In-Class Exams

A professor argues that in-class exams promote broader learning and pressure-management skills.

  4. P4

    Cheating Risks in Take-Home Exams

In-class exams are less vulnerable to cheating than take-home exams.

  5. P5

The Cost of Unbounded Take-Home Testing

A Yale dean warns that unbounded take-home exams harm well-being and learning.

  6. P6

    Matching Exam Formats to Subjects

The best exam format depends on whether a subject values calculation, memorization, or research.

  7. P7

Students' Mixed Views on Exam Formats

Students' preferences reveal different benefits and stress patterns in the two exam formats.

  8. P8

    Test Formats and Personal Weaknesses

Individual test-taking weaknesses determine how difficult each exam format feels.

  9. P9

    The Returning Student's Age Disadvantage

Age and time away from school make exams especially challenging for returning students.

  10. P10

A Compromise Between Two Exam Formats

The narrator suggests a hybrid exam format that combines preparation time with in-class control.

  11. P11

A Cake Instead of a Final Exam

The article ends with a humorous no-exam alternative.

SELF CHECK ·

  1. 第 1 段 定位词 rather strange returning to college

Why does the writer consider returning to college rather strange?

    • A She is unable to understand the questions asked in class.
    • B She dislikes the students at Columbia University.
    • C She has always considered herself a poor test-taker.
    • D She has already completed a degree at another university.
    • E She wants to compete with younger students in class.
    • F She finds college courses easier than expected.

  2. 第 2 段 定位词 take-home midterm the morning it was due

What happened to the writer while she was working on her take-home midterm?

    • A She finished the exam early because she had a full week.
    • B She decided to replace the midterm with an in-class final.
    • C She completed the research without reading the assigned texts.
    • D She kept revising it until the morning it was due and lost her train of thought.
    • E She found the questions much less demanding than expected.
    • F She submitted the exam before beginning to rewrite it.

该项压缩复现了 still rewriting my midterm the morning it was due 与 lost the thread 两个连续事实,准确呈现实际结果。

先扫描 take-home midterm 周围的时间词,直接锁定 In fact、still 和 morning it was due;然后只比较正确项是否同时保留“拖到截止”和“思路中断”两层结果。

David Eisenbach favor in-class exams

Why does David Eisenbach favor in-class exams?

    • A They give students more time to research historical materials.
    • B They allow students to avoid working with classmates.
    • C They make history classes less popular among students.
    • D They guarantee that students will never feel anxious.
    • E They promote collaborative learning and train students to perform under pressure.
    • F They eliminate the need for students to study outside class.

该项分别概括 form study groups/socialize over history 与 learn how to perform under pressure,保留了教授提出的两项理由。

What advantage of in-class exams does Eisenbach mention?

    • A They are protected by honor codes at elite universities.
    • B They allow students to consult experts when they are blocked.
    • C They ensure that every student follows an identical honor code.
    • D They prevent students from feeling blocked and clueless.
    • E They require students to take classes on Congress.
    • F They offer fewer opportunities for cheating.

Mary Miller concern

What concern did Mary Miller express about take-home exams?

    • A Unbounded take-home exams can harm students' well-being and interfere with other work.
    • B They make regular quizzes impossible to administer.
    • C They always lead to cheating at the end of a term.
    • D They are unsuitable for all college subjects.
    • E They leave students with too little time to memorize facts.
    • F They reduce students' ability to conduct research.

该项将 risk health and well being 与 performance in other end-of-term work 准确整合,并保留 unbounded 这一关键条件。

Chris Koch journalism courses

Why does Chris Koch support take-home testing in journalism courses?

    • A Journalism requires students to memorize every minute detail.
    • B Journalism values investigating and finding information over memorizing details.
    • C Quantitative problems can be solved only with family assistance.
    • D Students should avoid using outside resources in reporting.
    • E There is little new information for journalists to deal with.
    • F Take-home tests are easier than all other forms of assessment.

该项准确概括 reporting is about investigation rather than memorization,以及 what you know how to find out。它解释了为何学生应使用 all the resources available。

Francesca Haass stress

How does Francesca Haass compare the stress caused by the two exam forms?

    • A Take-home exams cause no stress because there is no deadline.
    • B In-class exams are less stressful in both the short and long term.
    • C In-class exams create intense short-term stress, whereas take-homes can cause more lasting stress.
    • D Both forms produce exactly the same kind of stress.
    • E Only take-home exams require students to memorize information rapidly.
    • F In-class exams prevent students from forgetting what they have learned.

该项严格对应 in-class ones are more stressful in the short term 和 take-homes... longer term stress,并保留 whereas 的对照关系。

    时间轴配对 在 第7段 的引语中只圈所有时间词:short term、immediate、longer term、never、time is up。

  8. 第 8 段 定位词 writer's own test-taking behavior

Which description best fits the writer's own test-taking behavior?

    • A She always begins preparing for tests far in advance.
    • B She performs best when no resources are available.
    • C She is unaffected by unexpected questions.
    • D She tends to procrastinate and may also freeze when facing unknown questions without resources.
    • E She belongs only to the group that studies at the last minute.
    • F She avoids taking any exams whenever possible.

作者说自己 fit both those descriptions,正确项因而必须同时覆盖 last minute 的拖延和在未知题目、无资源时 freeze 的反应。

Kate Marber returning students

What challenge do returning students face, according to Kate Marber?

    • A They have more recent high-school experience than younger classmates.
    • B They need to learn less information than other students.
    • C They can access information more quickly because of their age.
    • D They no longer need to develop learning skills.
    • E They must relearn how to learn while adapting to changes since they were last at school.
    • F They are exempt from the changes in modern education.

正确项概括 learning not only information but essentially how to learn again,并保留 A lot has changed since we were last in school

递进句加时间背景 在 第9段 先锁 Kate Marber 的引号,抓 not only...but essentially... 和 since we were last in school 两个结构。

  10. 第 10 段 定位词 writer's son prefer in-class exams

Why does the writer's son prefer in-class exams?

    • A He can receive the exam questions two days in advance.
    • B He wants more time to rewrite his answers at home.
    • C He believes in-class exams are always easier.
    • D He wants to share every test experience with the writer.
    • E He dislikes working under a ticking clock.
    • F The exam time is scheduled, so it does not take up his free time at home.

该项完整改写 the time is already reserved 与 as opposed to using my free time at home to work on a test。

    锁住引号内I 直接进入 第10段,先找 son 后的引号,只读 I like 至 responded 的内容。

Hunter College professor actually

What did the Hunter College professor actually do for her final exam?

    • A She served the students slices of a large chocolate cake instead of giving a written test.
    • B She gave students an unusually easy written examination.
    • C She asked students to study harder before a difficult final.
    • D She required students to bring their own bluebooks.
    • E She postponed the final because students were too stressed.
    • F She tested students on the history of chocolate cakes.

该项对应 not a bluebook in sight、large chocolate cake 和 each were given a slice,并用 instead of 清晰呈现替代关系。

作者以 personal narrative 的方式 introduce 自己作为 a poor test-taker 重返 college 的 experience,通过 self-deprecating tone 建立 relatability,为后续探讨 exam formats 做 background setup。

通过 Columbia professor David Eisenbach 的 perspective 提出 pro-in-class exam arguments:促进 study groups 和 socialization,培养 performance under pressure 的 work skill,减少 cheating opportunities。

    这个 section 构建文章 argumentation 的 first pillar,通过 expert testimony 和 real-world example(Harvard scandal)establish in-class exams 的 advantages。Multiple benefits(social learning、pressure management、academic integrity)形成 layered argument,为 main claim 提供 substantial support。

Yale former dean Mary Miller 从 institutional authority 的 angle 反对 take-home exams,强调其对 student health、well-being 和 academic performance 的 negative impact。她 advocate for "regular quizzes, short essays" 作为 better alternative,引用 research evidence 增强 credibility。

    这个 paragraph 从 different authority source(administrative perspective)reinforce 反对 take-home exams 的 position,用 health/performance risks 和 research backing 提供 additional layer of evidence。它 complement 前面的 cheating concern,形成 multi-dimensional critique of take-home format。

从 absolutist stance 转向 nuanced position:exam format choice depends on subject nature。Quantitative subjects 适合 in-class,vocational fields like journalism 更 suited for take-home。Chris Koch 的 quote 阐释 research-oriented disciplines 的 rationale:"it's what you know how to find out" rather than memorization。

它 prevent 文章 from appearing one-sided,demonstrate mature thinking by recognizing subject-specific needs,为 "optimal format depends on..."

通过 three student voices(Elizabeth Dresser、Francesca Haass、Olivia Rubin)展现 diverse preferences based on individual needs:有人看重 editing time,有人关注 stress patterns(short-term vs long-term),有人认为 take-homes "should be a breeze" if you understand material。

这个 segment 从 student lived experience 补充 argumentation, show 即使在相同 subject context, individual differences in learning style、stress tolerance 和 writing ability 也会 影响 optimal format。这 reinforce "depends on individual" 的 component of main claim,让 argument 更 comprehensive。

从 descriptive level 深入到 explanatory level:people's test performance 受 personal test-taking abilities 影响。作者 identify three types:procrastinators、those who freeze under pressure、和 "rare folks" who combine both。这个 psychological analysis 解释了为什么 preferences vary so much。

这个 paragraph 为 "individual learning styles" component 提供 deeper rationale,从 what varies 到 why it varies。通过 psychological factors explanation,使 "optimal format depends on individual" 的 claim 更有 theoretical grounding,不只是 empirical observation。

作者通过 son's opinion("time is already reserved")introduce compromise proposal:提前拿到 questions 但在 class 内完成。最后用 Hunter College professor 的 cake exam anecdote 作为 lighthearted ending,既 echo opening 的 humor tone,也 suggest 过度 stress about exam formats 本身可能是 overblown concern。

Conclusion 不是简单 restate main claim,而是提供 synthesis:在承认 both formats have merits 基础上,propose hybrid solution 和 challenge exam anxiety culture itself。Cake anecdote 提供 thought-provoking ending,让 readers question whether the format debate matters as much as we think,体现 mature reflective thinking。

  2. 议论文的 body paragraphs 通常 present multiple sides of an argument,通过 quote experts、cite research 或 provide examples 来 support different viewpoints。识别这些 contrasting opinions 能帮助我们理解 the complexity of the issue,也为识别 author's ultimate position 做铺垫。

本文作者反复强调 take-home exams 带来的 stress、overthinking 和 temptation,这种 pattern of negative associations 暗示 author's preference,即使没有 explicit thesis statement。

议论文的 conclusion 有时不是 explicit restatement of thesis,而是通过 propose solutions、raise new questions 或 end with an anecdote 来 subtly convey author's position。本文的 compromise suggestion 保留了 in-class exams 的核心优势(time boundaries、reduced overthinking),这 implicitly endorses in-class format 的 benefits。

  5. 议论文的 thesis 不总是 one-sentence declaration,尤其在 exploratory or balanced arguments 中,author's position 是通过 cumulative evidence、strategic emphasis 和 rhetorical choices 逐步 constructed 的。本文采用 inquiry-based approach,通过 present and weigh multiple perspectives 最终 lean towards 一个 qualified conclusion。

主旨信号词 ultimately beneficial P2 prefers P3 less chance of cheating P4 force students to learn how to perform under pressure P3 Research now shows P5 Students risk health and well being P5 I was still rewriting... the morning it was due P2 I momentarily wondered if I couldn't just call an expert P4 I want my students to search out the answers P6 immediate relief as you swallow information like mad, and then you get to forget it all P7 a compromise would be receiving the exam questions a day or two in advance P10

The article argues that in-class exams, despite being stressful, may be more beneficial than take-home exams because they encourage broader studying, reduce cheating opportunities, develop time-pressure skills, and prevent overthinking, though the optimal format depends on subject matter and individual learning styles.

其次,taxing与beneficial形成对比but also connection,说明这种quality虽然challenging但能lead to positive outcome。

让我们connect these dots。作者在confusion about exams时turned to polling,然后文章proceeds to present various opinions from professors和students。这个sequence表明polling就是actively seeking out different perspectives的process。另外,among students and professors这个phrase暗示了polling involves asking questions to a group of people而不是individual consultation。因此polling应该是一种survey or questionnaire type的activity。

其次,scandal triggered institutional response from Yale's dean,证明其social impact。最后,作者用it as cautionary tale,表明scandal是publicly known的negative event。

Scandal发生后,Dean Miller采取action,她made an impassioned appeal,这个emotional intensity说明她wants strong change。她wants professors to refrain from take-home exams,而她immediately provides reasons why这种exams are harmful。这个argumentative structure清楚表明refrain from means to stop or avoid某个action。

首先,vocational与quantitative形成dichotomy,而quantitative侧重theoretical and mathematical,所以vocational应该emphasize不同aspect。其次,examples like journalism和computer science都是career-focused fields,不是pure academic disciplines like philosophy。最后,Koch's emphasis on knowing how to find out而非memorization表明vocational courses prepare students for actual work。

Olivia的statement structure是if-then:如果you understand material,那么exams should be a breeze。这个logic suggests breeze describes a positive outcome when prerequisites are met。另外,她hardly considers them true exams这个dismissive tone,加上与其他students' stress descriptions的contrast,都point to breeze meaning something that requires little effort。在informal context中,说something is a breeze通常means it's very easy。

信号词 for example for instance such as to illustrate consider take the case of in my experience as an example

【Topic sentence stating the claim】 + 【Transition: "Consider my own experience..." / "Take the case of..."】 + 【Detailed example with specific details】 + 【Explicit connection back to the main argument】

信号词 says states argues claims according to notes points out explains told me responded believes

首先 contextualize the source (谁说的、什么身份),然后给出 quotation,最后必须 explain its relevance 到你的 argument。 【Introduce the expert and their credentials】 + 【Direct quotation】 + 【Your analysis of how this supports your thesis】

    P2 P3 P4 P5 P6 P7

    文章系统地对比了 in-class exams 和 take-home exams 的 advantages and disadvantages。 这种 contrastive structure 不仅帮助读者 clearly see the trade-offs,还通过展示 both sides 来增强论证的 fairness 和 credibility,最终引导读者认同 in-class exams 的 relative advantages。

信号词 on the other hand in contrast while whereas however but unlike compared to alternatively conversely

使用 transitional devices 来 signal shifts between alternatives。模版:【Introduce the two options being compared】 + 【Discuss aspect 1 of Option A, then aspect 1 of Option B】 + 【Repeat for other aspects】 + 【Conclude by weighing the options】。或使用 "while X..., Y..." / "on the other hand" / "in contrast" 等 connectors。

例如,in-class exams 的 pressure → students forming study groups → socializing over course material (第3段);take-home exams 的 open-ended time → overthinking and anxiety → compromised performance (第2段, 第5段)。

信号词 because since as a result therefore consequently thus leads to causes results in due to force encourages

使用 causal language 来 make connections explicit。模版:【Identify the cause】 + 【Use causal connector: "because", "as a result", "leads to"】 + 【State the effect】 + 【Optional: explain the mechanism or provide evidence】。注意 validate causation (不是 mere correlation) by explaining the underlying mechanism。

这个 playful metaphor 不仅 lightens the tone after heavy discussion,还 symbolically represents 理想的考试体验——应该是 manageable 而不是 overwhelming。

信号词 like as metaphorically piece of cake breeze freeze swallow information like mad

【Introduce the abstract concept】 + 【Compare it to something concrete using "like", "as", or implicit comparison】 + 【Optional: develop the metaphor with details】

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
So it may seem rather strange that I have returned to college to finish the degree I left undone some four decades ago.

(Concession and Contrast) It may seem rather strange it may seem admittedly strange as it may be paradoxically ironically

    P2
To say I had lost the thread is putting it mildly.

(Understatement/Litotes) putting it mildly to say the least hardly a success less than ideal

    P4
if you are smart enough to get into these schools, you are either smart enough to get around any codes or hopefully, too ethical to consider doing so.

对比类(Contrast with Irony) if you are smart enough smart enough to ironically on the one hand... on the other conversely

作者在这里 trace 了一个 cynical 的观点:顶尖大学的 honor code 可能只是 a piece of paper,因为聪明人总能 find a way to cheat,从而 support 了 in-class exams 更公平的 argument。

    P6
In my field, it's not what you know—it's what you know how to find out.

对比类(Comparative Definition) In my field, it's not what you know—it's what you know how to find out it's not... it's rather than instead of far from

    P7
Olivia Rubin... says she hardly even considers take-homes true exams.

(Hedge/Dismissive phrasing) hardly even considers hardly scarcely barely merely rarely

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

这种 contrast 显示作者在 weighing pros and cons。

David Eisenbach 的 arguments for in-class exams (社交、pressure skills) 被 detailed presentation,而 take-home advocates 的 points 也被 fairly presented,显示作者在 maintaining objectivity。但作者自己的 negative experience with take-home 和 Mary Miller 的 warning (第5段) 给 in-class exams 加了 implicit weight。

作者 admit 自己的 age 和 learning curve 可能 影响 judgment,这显示 intellectual honesty 和 reluctance to make absolute claims。Proposing compromise (提前拿题但课堂答) 和 ending with humorous anecdote (chocolate cake) 表明作者不是 rigidly advocating,而是 exploring possibilities。

但这篇用 inquiry-based structure (question → exploration → tentative conclusion),显示 ambivalence。作者的 slight preference for in-class 不是通过 explicit argument,而是通过 accumulated weight of concerns about take-homes (cheating, unbounded stress, performance variance) 和 benefits of in-class (social learning, time boundaries, immediate relief)。

  • suffering through P2

这些 negative intensity words 描述作者对 take-home exam 的 experience, create visceral sense of distress。'

同类词 anxiety overthinking lost the thread sweated through putting it mildly

  • prefers P3

作者在 quote David Eisenbach 时用了 'prefers' 这个 clear preference verb,而且 Eisenbach 的 arguments 被 presented with strong supporting rationale (socialization, pressure skills)。作者选择 feature 这个 authoritative voice 支持 in-class exams,而且没有 counter with equal weight for take-home advocates。

同类词 believes encourages explained force students to learn essential work skill

  • impassioned appeal P5

'Impassioned' 这个 adjective 给 Mary Miller 的 position 加了 emotional and moral weight。作者选择 highlight Miller 的 concerns about student health 和 cite research evidence,这些都是 persuasive elements 支持 in-class exams。用 'risk health' 这样的 strong language 把 take-home exams frame 为 potentially harmful。

同类词 refrain from risk health and well being research now shows

  • momentarily wondered P4

作者 admit 自己 'momentarily wondered' about getting help,这是 honest confession 但用 'momentarily' 来 qualify,显示这个 thought 很 brief 和 quickly dismissed。同时提到 Harvard cheating scandal 和 honor code,把 take-home exams associate with integrity risks。

同类词 blocked and clueless scandal cheating honor code

  • I prefer P7

但注意 'longer term stress' 和 'never a moment when the time is up' 这些 descriptions of take-home exams 都 emphasize unbounded anxiety,而 in-class 虽然 'more stressful in the short term' 但有 'immediate relief'。这个 temporal contrast (bounded vs. unbounded stress) tilts toward in-class。

I find more stressful immediate relief longer term stress never a moment when the time is up

  • compromise P10

Compromise' 明确 indicates 作者在 seeking balance,不是 advocating strongly for either side。'Better yet' followed by humorous example 是 rhetorical move to 轻化 the whole debate, suggesting 也许 entire premise of stressful exams 需要 rethinking。这种 ending strategy(humor + playfulness)与 strong argumentative conclusion 很不同。如果作者 truly wanted to advocate for in-class exams, would end with forceful restatement of benefits,但 instead 用 chocolate cake story 来 deflate tension。这 signals overall attitude 是 exploratory 和 somewhat ambivalent,虽然 slight preference 可从 earlier evidence 看出。Humorous endings in argumentative essays 通常 indicate 作者想 maintain light touch 和 avoid dogmatism。

同类词 it seems to me better yet promised piece of cake

议论文的核心特征是 present and defend a viewpoint on a controversial issue,而说明文是 explain facts objectively,新闻报道是 report events neutrally。

议论文的 essential feature 是 explore different sides of an issue through dialogue 或 contrasting opinions,而说明文是 linearly explain information without debate,新闻报道虽然可能 include quotes 但目的是 report facts 而非 weigh arguments。这篇文章不仅 presents opinions 还 juxtaposes them,比如 Eisenbach 认为 in-class exams force students to perform under pressure,而 Miller warns 它们 risk health and well-being,这种 tension 是 argumentative structure 的 core。

议论文的 conclusion 往往 propose solutions、acknowledge complexity、或 leave readers with questions to ponder,而说明文的 ending 会 summarize information comprehensively,新闻报道会 end with final facts 或 future developments。这篇文章的 ending 用 cake anecdote 来 implicitly comment on exam stress,这种 implicit argumentation 和 suggestive tone 是 persuasive writing 的 strategy,不是 informative 或 journalistic closure。

  4. 这个三步法的 efficiency 在于它针对 genre-defining features:议论文必须 establish a position(步骤一),必须 engage with counterarguments 或 alternative views(步骤二),必须 synthesize or complicate the issue(步骤三)。 通过 check 这三个 structural nodes,读者能 rapidly categorize 文章 genre without reading every detail。

(Opinion-Introducing Verb) prefers argues contends maintains points out
(Logical Connector for Argumentation) Moreover In addition However Nevertheless On the other hand
(Concession-Rebuttal Marker) although while even though granted admittedly
  • It seems to me P10 作者立场表态词(First-Person Stance Marker) In my opinion I believe I think Better yet I would argue
