Part III Section C (2)
Directions: There  are 2 passages  in this section. Each passage  is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them  there  are four choices marked A),B),C)and D).You should decide  on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.
Passage Two
Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.
P1Across the rich world, well-educated people increasingly work longer than the less-skilled. Some 65% of American men aged 62-74 with a professional degree are in the workforce, compared with 32% of men with only a high-school certificate. This gap is part of a deepening divide between the well-educated well-off and the unskilled poor. Rapid technological advance has raised the incomes of the highly skilled while squeezing those of the unskilled. The consequences, for individuals and society, are profound.

P2The world is facing an astonishing rise in the number of old people, and they will live longer than ever before. Over the next 20 years the global population of those aged 65 or more will almost double, from 600 million to 1.1 billion. The experience of the 20th century, when greater longevity(长寿) translated into more years in retirement rather than more years at work, has persuaded many observers that this shift will lead to slower economic growth, while the swelling ranks of pensioners will create government budget problems.

P3But the notion of a sharp division between the working young and the idle old misses a new trend, the growing gap between the skilled and the unskilled. Employment rates are falling among younger unskilled people, whereas older skilled folk are working longer. The divide is most extreme in America, where well-educated baby-boomers(二战后生育高峰期出生的美国人) are putting off retirement while many less-skilled younger people have dropped out of the workforce.

P4Policy is partly responsible. Many European governments have abandoned policies that used to encourage people to retire early. Rising life expectancy(预期寿命), combined with the replacement of generous defined-benefit pension plans with less generous defined-contribution ones, means that even the better-off must work longer to have a comfortable retirement. But the changing nature of work also plays a big role. Pay has risen sharply for the highly educated, and those people continue to reap rich rewards into old age because these days the educated elderly are more productive than the preceding generation. Technological change may well reinforce that shift: the skills that complement computers, from management know-how to creativity, do not necessarily decline with age.

51.
What is happening in the workforce in rich countries?
A)Younger people are replacing the elderly.
B)Well-educated people tend to work longer.
C)Unemployment rates are rising year after year.
D)People with no college degree do not easily find work.

B(细节题)

What is happening in the workforce in rich countries? 用 What is happening 直接问当下事实,没有 infer/imply 等推断信号,也没有 mainly about 的主旨信号。

What is happening in the workforce in rich countries? 是一个 What 引导的现在进行时疑问句,主语 What,谓语 is happening,介词短语 in the workforce in rich countries 作地点状语;结构平铺直叙,无陷阱。

P1

Across the rich world, well-educated people increasingly work longer than the less-skilled.

Younger people are replacing the elderly.

    • well\-educated people increasingly work longer than the less\-skilledWell\-educated people tend to work longer.

    B 选项几乎是定位句的同义简写:主语 Well-educated people 与原文一致,谓语 tend to work longer 是 increasingly work longer 的同义替换,与预判完全吻合。

Employment rates are falling among younger unskilled people Unemployment rates are rising year after year.

People with no college degree do not easily find work.

52.
What has helped deepen the divide between the well-off and the poor?
A)Longer life expectancies.
B)A rapid technological advance.
C)Profound changes in the workforce.
D)A growing number of the well-educated.

B(细节题)

What has helped deepen the divide between the well-off and the poor?

What has helped deepen the divide between the well-off and the poor? 主干 What has helped deepen the divide, has helped 后跟动词原形 deepen 是 help (to) do 结构;between the well-off and the poor 修饰 divide。

P1

Rapid technological advance has raised the incomes of the highly skilled while squeezing those of the unskilled.

    • Rapid technological advance has raised the incomes of the highly skilled while squeezing those of the unskilled.A rapid technological advance.

This gap is part of a deepening divide Profound changes in the workforce.

A growing number of the well\-educated.

53.
What do many observers predict in view of the experience of the 20th century?
A)Economic growth will slow down.
B)Government budgets will increase.
C)More people will try to pursue higher education.
D)There will be more competition in the job market.

A(细节题)

What do many observers predict in view of the experience of the 20th century?

What do many observers predict in view of the experience of the 20th century? What do many observers predict,介词短语 in view of the experience of the 20th century 作状语,意为"鉴于 20 世纪的经验"。

P2

The experience of the 20th century, when greater longevity translated into more years in retirement rather than more years at work, has persuaded many observers that this shift will lead to slower economic growth, while the swelling ranks of pensioners will create government budget problems.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • this shift will lead to slower economic growthEconomic growth will slow down.

More people will try to pursue higher education.

There will be more competition in the job market.

54.
What is the result of policy changes in European countries?
A)Unskilled workers may choose to retire early.
B)More people have to receive in-service training.
C)Even wealthy people must work longer to live comfortably in retirement.
D)People may be able to enjoy generous defined-benefits from pension plans.

C(细节题)

What is the result of policy changes in European countries? 用 What is the result of

What is the result of policy changes in European countries? What is the result of X,of 后的 policy changes in European countries 是 of 的宾语。

P4

Rising life expectancy, combined with the replacement of generous defined-benefit pension plans with less generous defined-contribution ones, means that even the better-off must work longer to have a comfortable retirement.

Unskilled workers may choose to retire early.

More people have to receive in\-service training.

    • even the better\-off must work longer to have a comfortable retirementEven wealthy people must work longer to live comfortably in retirement.

    C 把 even、better-off→wealthy、must work longer、a comfortable retirement→live comfortably in retirement 四个语义成分一一对应保留,且未引入额外信息,是定位句的标准同义改写。

原文明确说 the replacement of generous defined\-benefit pension plans with less generous defined\-contribution ones——慷慨的固定收益计划正在被取消;People may be able to enjoy generous defined\-benefits from pension plans.

55.
What is characteristic of work in the 21st century?
A)Computers will do more complicated work.
B)More will be taken by the educated young.
C)Most jobs to be done will be the creative ones.
D)Skills are highly valued regardless of age.

D(主旨题)

What is characteristic of work in the 21st century?

What is characteristic of work in the 21st century? 主干 What is characteristic of X,characteristic

Computers will do more complicated work.

原文 older skilled folk are working longer、well\-educated baby\-boomers... are putting off retirement 强调的是"高技能老人"在岗时间更长;More will be taken by the educated young.

原文 from management know\-how to creativity 中 creativity 只是与电脑互补的技能之一例,并非全文断言"大多数工作都是创造性的";Most jobs to be done will be the creative ones.

    • the skills that complement computers, from management know\-how to creativity, do not necessarily decline with ageSkills are highly valued regardless of age.
    • those people continue to reap rich rewards into old age because these days the educated elderly are more productive than the preceding generationSkills are highly valued regardless of age.
