Part III Section C (1)
Directions: There  are 2 passages  in this section. Each passage  is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them  there  are four choices marked A),B),C)and D).You should decide  on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.
Passage One
Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.
P1When it's five o'clock, people leave their office. The length of the workday, for many workers, is defined by time. They leave when the clock tells them they're done.

P2These days, the time is everywhere: not just on clocks or watches, but on cell-phones and computers. That may be a bad thing, particularly at work. New research shows that clock-based work schedules hinder morale(士气) and creativity.

P3Clock-timers organize their day by blocks of minutes and hours. For example: a meeting from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., research from 10 a.m. to noon, etc. On the other hand, task-timers have a list of things they want to accomplish. They work down the list, each task starts when the previous task is completed. It is said that all of us employ a mix of both these types of planning.

P4What, then, are the effects of thinking about time in these different ways? Does one make us more productive? Better at the tasks at hand? Happier? In experiments conducted by Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier, they had participants organize different activities—from project planning, holiday shopping, to yoga—by time or to-do list to measure how they performed under "clock time" vs "task time." They found clock timers to be more efficient but less happy because they felt little control over their lives. Task timers are happier and more creative, but less productive. They tend to enjoy the moment when something good is happening, and seize opportunities that come up.

P5The researchers argue that task-based organizing tends to be undervalued and under-supported in business culture. Smart companies, they believe, will try to bake more task-based planning into their strategies.

P6This might be a small change to the way we view work and the office, but the researchers argue that it challenges a widespread characteristic of the economy: work organized by clock time. While most people will still probably need, and be, to some extent, clock-timers, task-based timing should be used when performing a job that requires more creativity. It'll make those tasks easier, and the task doers will be happier.

46.
What does the author think of time displayed everywhere?
A)It makes everybody time-conscious.
B)It is a convenience for work and life.
C)It may have a negative effect on creative work.
D)It clearly indicates the fast pace of modern life.

C(细节题)

What does the author think of time displayed everywhere?

What does the author think of time displayed everywhere? 怎么看";time 后的 displayed everywhere 是过去分词短语作后置定语,等价于 which is displayed everywhere。

P2

That may be a bad thing, particularly at work. New research shows that clock-based work schedules hinder morale(士气) and creativity.

a convenience for work and life 评价为正向,而原文 That may be a bad thing, particularly at work

    • hinder morale(士气) and creativitymay have a negative effect on creative work
    • That may be a bad thingIt may have a negative effect on creative work

clearly indicates the fast pace of modern life 中 fast pace of modern life 是社会常识话题,原文重点是"时间无处不在伤害士气与创造力",并未把这件事与现代生活节奏挂钩。

47.
How do people usually go about their work according to the author?
A)They combine clock-based and task-based planning.
B)They give priority to the most urgent task on hand.
C)They set a time limit for each specific task.
D)They accomplish their tasks one by one.

A(细节题)

How do people usually go about their work

How do people usually go about their work according to the author? How do people go about their work, usually 是频率副词修饰动词,according to the author 是介词短语作状语,限定信息来源。

P3

It is said that all of us employ a mix of both these types of planning.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • a mix of both these types of planningcombine clock\-based and task\-based planning

give priority to the most urgent task They work down the list, each task starts when the previous task is completed

    set a time limit for each specific task 描述的是 clock-based planning 的特征(a meeting from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., research from 10 a.m. to noon),只覆盖了"时钟"一种方式,丢掉了 task-based 那一半。

accomplish their tasks one by one 是 task-based 一类的写法(They work down the list, each task starts when the previous task is completed),同样丢掉了另一半 clock-based。

48.
What did Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier find in their experiments about clock-timers?
A)They seize opportunities as they come up.
B)They always get their work done in time.
C)They have more control over their lives.
D)They tend to be more productive.

D(细节题)

What did Tamar Avnet and Anne\-Laure Sellier find in their experiments

What did Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier find in their experiments about clock-timers? What did A and B find,in their experiments 与 about clock-timers 都是介词短语作状语,限定 find 的范围。

P4

They found clock-timers to be more efficient but less happy because they felt little control over their lives.

seize opportunities as they come up 是 Task timers... seize opportunities that come up 描述 task-timers 的句子,被错配到 clock-timers 头上。

always get their work done in time 中 always 与 in time 都未在原文出现;原文只说 more efficient,没有说 always 准时完成。

more control over their lives 与原文 felt little control over their lives 极性完全相反,原文是"几乎没有掌控感"。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • more efficientmore productive

49.
What do the researchers say about today's business culture?
A)It does not support the strategies adopted by smart companies.
B)It does not attach enough importance to task-based practice.
C)It places more emphasis on work efficiency than on workers' lives.
D)It aims to bring employees, potential and creativity into full play.

B(细节题)

What do the researchers say about today's business culture?

What do the researchers say about today's business culture? What do the researchers say, about today's business culture

P5

The researchers argue that task-based organizing tends to be undervalued and under-supported in business culture.

does not support the strategies adopted by smart companies Smart companies, they believe, will try to bake more task-based planning into their strategies 不符——原文说的是聪明公司将主动把 task-based 纳入策略,不是商业文化在排斥它。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • undervalued and under-supporteddoes not attach enough importance to task-based practice

    预判要求"对 task-based 重视不够",B 直接写出 does not attach enough importance to task-based practice,与 undervalued and under-supported 同义。

places more emphasis on work efficiency than on workers' lives 把焦点偷换成"工作效率 vs 工人生活"的对比,原文只说商业文化对 task-based 重视不够,没有讨论"效率 vs 生活"。

aims to bring employees, potential and creativity into full play 把商业文化描述为充分激发员工潜力与创造力,与原文 task-based organizing tends to be undervalued and under-supported 的负面评价方向完全相反。

50.
What do the researchers suggest?
A)Task-based timing is preferred for doing creative work.
B)It is important to keep a balance between work and life.
C)Performing creative jobs tends to make workers happier.
D)A scientific standard should be adopted in job evaluation.

A(主旨题)

What do the researchers suggest?

What do the researchers suggest?

  • A)✓ 正确
    • task-based timing should be used when performing a job that requires more creativityTask-based timing is preferred for doing creative work

It is important to keep a balance between work and life 中 work and life 平衡完全没有出现在原文中,原文谈的是两种时间安排方式的选用,而非工作与生活的平衡。

Performing creative jobs tends to make workers happier Task timers are happier and more creative

A scientific standard should be adopted in job evaluation
