Part III Section C (2)
Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.
Passage Two
Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.
P1Research shows that in developed countries, more affluent and educated people tend to consume higher-quality diets—including more fruits and vegetables, fish and whole grains. On the contrary, economically disadvantaged people report diets that are nutrient-poor and energy-dense. They are less likely to have food-purchasing habits that conform to public health recommendations.

P2These dietary differences are often accompanied by higher rates of obesity and diabetes among lower-income people. This relationship between social class and diet quality and health is extensively documented. However, the research does not explain why this is the case—a question that has significant implications for designing effective policies and initiatives to improve diets and prevent chronic diseases.

P3Public-health initiatives to promote healthy diets often focus on providing nutrition education and recipes(食谱). These approaches, however, often presume less food literacy (i.e., food knowledge and skills) among low-income people. Are unhealthy diets really the result of poor choices, limited food skills and knowledge?

P4Research suggests that adults in food-insecure households are just as likely as those in food-secure households to adjust recipes to make them more healthy. They are also just as proficient in food preparation and cooking skills. There is no indication that increasing food skills or budgeting skills will reduce food insecurity.

P5Instead, disadvantaged groups are constrained by their economic, material and social circumstances. For example, low income is the strongest predictor of food insecurity in Canada, where one in eight households experiences insufficient access to nutritious foods.

P6It's well-established that food prices are an important determinant of food choice. Low-income households report that they find it difficult to adopt dietary guidelines because food prices are a barrier to improving their diets.

P7When researchers estimate the cost of diets people actually eat, higher-quality diets are typically more costly.

P8While this may be so, it does not, in itself, prove that healthy diets are necessarily more expensive or cost-prohibitive. After all, not all socioeconomically disadvantaged people consume poor diets.

P9We can easily think of a number of foods and recipes that are both inexpensive and nutritious. The internet is full of recipes for "eating well on a budget."

51.
What can we learn from research on diets in developed countries?
A)Dietary recommendations are not fit for underprivileged people.
B)People from different social groups vary in their dietary habits.
C)People's choice of food depends on their individual taste
D)There is no consensus on what high-quality diets are.

B(细节题)

What can we learn from research on diets in developed countries

What can we learn from research on diets in developed countries 是 What 引导的特殊疑问句,主干是 What can we learn,后接介词短语 from research on diets in developed countries 修饰 learn 的来源;无从句、无否定、无陷阱。

P1

Research shows that in developed countries, more affluent and educated people tend to consume higher-quality diets—including more fruits and vegetables, fish and whole grains. On the contrary, economically disadvantaged people report diets that are nutrient-poor and energy-dense.

原文只说弱势群体 less likely to have food-purchasing habits that conform to public health recommendations,是"他们不照做",并非 Dietary recommendations are not fit for underprivileged people 这种"建议本身不适合"。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • more affluent and educated people tend to consume higher-quality diets ... On the contrary, economically disadvantaged people report diets that are nutrient-poor and energy-densePeople from different social groups vary in their dietary habits

People from different social groups vary in their dietary habits

52.
What does the author say is important in formulating policies to improve diets and health?
A)A better understanding of the relationship between social class and health.
B)A greater emphasis on studying the cause of obesity and chronic diseases.
C)Prioritizing the provision of better nutrition for lower classes.
D)Designing education programs and initiatives on public health.

A(细节题)

What does the author say is important

What does the author say is important in formulating policies to improve diets and health 是嵌套疑问句,主语 the author,谓语 say,宾语为省略 that 的从句 What ... is important in formulating policies,to improve diets and health

P2

However, the research does not explain why this is the case—a question that has significant implications for designing effective policies and initiatives to improve diets and prevent chronic diseases.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • the research does not explain why this is the case—a question that has significant implications for designing effective policiesA better understanding of the relationship between social class and health

A better understanding of the relationship between social class and health

Prioritizing the provision of better nutrition。

education programs and initiatives on public health

53.
What does research reveal about adults in food-insecure households?
A)Their eating habits need to be changed.
B)Their food literacy has been improving.
C)They do not pay much attention to their food recipes.
D)They do not lack food knowledge or budgeting skills.

D(细节题)

What does research reveal about adults in food-insecure households

What does research reveal about adults in food-insecure households 主干 research reveal,宾语为 What, about adults in food-insecure households

P4

Research suggests that adults in food-insecure households are just as likely as those in food-secure households to adjust recipes to make them more healthy. They are also just as proficient in food preparation and cooking skills. There is no indication that increasing food skills or budgeting skills will reduce food insecurity.

Their eating habits need to be changed

原文明确说他们 adjust recipes to make them more healthy,反而是在认真对待食谱;do not pay much attention to their food recipes 与之相反。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • just as proficient in food preparation and cooking skillsThey do not lack food knowledge or budgeting skills
    • There is no indication that increasing food skills or budgeting skills will reduce food insecurityThey do not lack food knowledge or budgeting skills

They do not lack food knowledge or budgeting skills

54.
What would help improve food security among the disadvantaged groups in Canada?
A)Teaching them budgeting skills.
B)Increasing their food choices.
C)Enabling them to have more access to nutritious foods.
D)Taking more effective measures to increase food supplies.

C(细节题)

What would help improve food security among the disadvantaged groups in Canada

What would help improve food security among the disadvantaged groups in Canada 主干 What would help improve food security, help 后省略 to,among the disadvantaged groups in Canada 是限定 food security 范围的介词短语,三层修饰但平铺直叙。

P5

For example, low income is the strongest predictor of food insecurity in Canada, where one in eight households experiences insufficient access to nutritious foods.

第四段已明确 no indication that increasing food skills or budgeting skills will reduce food insecurity,作者直接驳斥 Teaching them budgeting skills 这种做法。

原文谈的是 insufficient access to nutritious foods 即"获取渠道不足",不是 Increasing their food choices 即"扩大可选范围"。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • one in eight households experiences insufficient access to nutritious foodsEnabling them to have more access to nutritious foods

Enabling them to have more access to nutritious foods

55.
What does the author suggest disadvantaged people do to improve their health?
A)Adopt a positive attitude towards dietary guidelines.
B)Choose diets that are both healthy and affordable.
C)Make sure to purchase healthy foods on the internet.
D)Change their eating habits and consumption patterns.

B(细节题)

What does the author suggest disadvantaged people do to improve their health

What does the author suggest disadvantaged people do to improve their health 是含 suggest 的特殊疑问句,宾语从句省略了 that 与 should,故 do 以原形出现;to improve their health 是不定式目的状语,整体结构清晰。

P9

We can easily think of a number of foods and recipes that are both inexpensive and nutritious. The internet is full of recipes for "eating well on a budget."

原文只提到弱势群体 find it difficult to adopt dietary guidelines,并未让他们 Adopt a positive attitude towards dietary guidelines。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • foods and recipes that are both inexpensive and nutritiousChoose diets that are both healthy and affordable
    • eating well on a budgetChoose diets that are both healthy and affordable

Choose diets that are both healthy and affordable 是 both…and…

The internet is full of recipes for "eating well on a budget.",是举例说明网上有这类食谱,并非建议人们"必须" Make sure to purchase healthy foods on the internet。

Change their eating habits and consumption patterns
