Part III Section C (2)
Directions: There  are 2 passages  in this section. Each passage  is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them  there  are four choices marked A),B),C)and D).You should decide  on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.
Passage Two
Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.
P1If you've ever started a sentence with, "If I were you…" or found yourself scratching your head at a colleague's agony over a decision when the answer is crystal-clear, there's a scientific reason behind it. Our own decision-making abilities can become depleted over the course of the day causing indecision or poor choices, but choosing on behalf of someone else is an enjoyable task that doesn't suffer the same pitfalls.

P2The problem is "decision fatigue," a psychological phenomenon that takes a toll on the quality of your choices after a long day of decision making, says Evan Polman, a leading psychologist.

P3Physicians who have been on the job for several hours, for example, are more likely to prescribe antibiotics to patients when it's unwise to do so. "Presumably it's because it's simple and easy to write a prescription and consider a patient case closed rather than investigate further," Polman says.

P4But decision fatigue goes away when you are making the decision for someone else. When people imagine themselves as advisers and imagine their own choices as belonging to someone else, they feel less tired and rely less on decision shortcuts to make those choices. "By taking upon the role of adviser rather than decision maker, one does not suffer the consequences of decision fatigue," he says. "It's as if there's something fun and liberating about making someone else's choice."

P5Getting input from others not only offers a fresh perspective and thought process; it often also includes riskier choices. While this sounds undesirable, it can be quite good, says Polman. "When people experience decision fatigue—when they are tired of making choices—they have a tendency to choose to go with the status quo(现状)," he says. "But the status quo can be problematic, since a change in the course of action can sometimes be important and lead to a positive outcome."

P6In order to achieve a successful outcome or reward, some level of risk is almost always essential. "People who are susceptible to decision fatigue will likely choose to do nothing over something," he says, "That's not to say that risk is always good, but it is related to taking action whereas decision fatigue assuredly leads to inaction and the possible chagrin(懊恼) of a decision maker who might otherwise prefer a new course but is unfortunately hindered."

P7Just because you can make good choices for others doesn't mean you'll do the same for yourself, Polman cautions. "Research has found that women negotiate higher salaries for others than they do for themselves," he says, adding that people slip in and out of decision roles.

51.
What does the author say about people making decisions?
A)They may become exhausted by making too many decisions for themselves.
B)They are more cautious in making decisions for others than for themselves.
C)They tend to make decisions the way they think advantageous to them.
D)They show considerable differences in their decision-making abilities.

A(细节题)

题干 What does the author say about people making decisions?

What does the author say about people making decisions? 是一个标准的 "What does X say about Y" 句型,主干是 "the author say",about 短语限定话题为 "people making decisions";其中 making decisions 是 people 的现在分词后置定语,等于 "people who make decisions",无陷阱。

P1

Our own decision-making abilities can become depleted over the course of the day causing indecision or poor choices, but choosing on behalf of someone else is an enjoyable task that doesn't suffer the same pitfalls.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • Our own decision-making abilities can become depleted over the course of the dayThey may become exhausted by making too many decisions for themselves
    • over the course of the dayby making too many decisions for themselves

原文说替别人做决定 "enjoyable"/"doesn't suffer the same pitfalls",并未说替别人做决定更谨慎;反过来,P5 还说替别人做决定常包含 riskier choices,与 more cautious in making decisions for others 完全相反。

52.
What does the example about the physicians illustrate?
A)Patients seldom receive due care towards the end of the day.
B)Prescription of antibiotics can be harmful to patients' health.
C)Decision fatigue may prevent people making wise decisions.
D)Medical doctors are especially susceptible to decision fatigue.

C(例证目的题)

What does the example about the physicians illustrate?

What does the example about the physicians illustrate? 主干 "What does the example illustrate",about the physicians 是后置介词短语修饰 example,指明是哪一个例子;句式平实,无陷阱。

P3

Physicians who have been on the job for several hours, for example, are more likely to prescribe antibiotics to patients when it's unwise to do so. "Presumably it's because it's simple and easy to write a prescription and consider a patient case closed rather than investigate further," Polman says.

Physicians who have been on the job for several hours 只说"工作几个小时后的医生"会受影响,并没有说所有 patients 都"在 day end 时得不到 due care";选项 Patients seldom receive due care towards the end of the day

Prescription of antibiotics can be harmful to patients' health 把焦点放在医学结论上,与 Q52 "the example illustrate(说明什么)" 的设问方向无关。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • are more likely to prescribe antibiotics to patients when it's unwise to do soDecision fatigue may prevent people making wise decisions
    • decision fatigueDecision fatigue
    • simple and easy ... rather than investigate furtherprevent people making wise decisions

Decision fatigue may prevent people making wise decisions

Medical doctors are especially susceptible to decision fatigue

53.
When do people feel less decision fatigue?
A)When they take decision shortcuts.
B)When they help others to make decisions.
C)When they have major decisions to make.
D)When they have advisers to turn to.

B(细节题)

When do people feel less decision fatigue?

When do people feel less decision fatigue?

P4

But decision fatigue goes away when you are making the decision for someone else.

原文 they feel less tired and rely less on decision shortcuts 明确说替别人做决定时"少用决策捷径",而选项 When they take decision shortcuts

    • when you are making the decision for someone elseWhen they help others to make decisions
    • By taking upon the role of adviser rather than decision maker, one does not suffer the consequences of decision fatigueWhen they help others to make decisions

When they help others to make decisions

When they have major decisions to make

When they have advisers to turn to 谈"有顾问可求助时"疲劳减轻,但原文里 advisor 是说"自己扮演顾问角色"(taking upon the role of adviser),而不是"有顾问可找"——主语对象被偷换。

54.
What are people likely to do when decision fatigue sets in?
A)They turn to physicians for advice.
B)They tend to make risky decisions.
C)They adopt a totally new perspective.
D)They refrain from trying anything new.

D(细节题)

What are people likely to do when decision fatigue sets in?

What are people likely to do when decision fatigue sets in? 主干 "What are people likely to do",when 引导时间状语从句限定条件;sets in 是不及物动词短语,意为"(疲劳等)开始出现/到来",考生若把 sets in 误解为 "建立/设定" 会偏题。

P5

When people experience decision fatigue—when they are tired of making choices—they have a tendency to choose to go with the status quo, but the status quo can be problematic, since a change in the course of action can sometimes be important and lead to a positive outcome.

They turn to physicians for advice

原文 they have a tendency to choose to go with the status quo 说疲劳时倾向维持现状(保守),riskier choices 是"替别人决定"时才会的;选项 They tend to make risky decisions

They adopt a totally new perspective 谈"采纳全新视角",原文里 fresh perspective 是"听别人意见"带来的好处(offers a fresh perspective),不是疲劳后的行为;选项把好处当成行为粘到错条件上。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • they have a tendency to choose to go with the status quoThey refrain from trying anything new
    • decision fatigue assuredly leads to inactionThey refrain from trying anything new

They refrain from trying anything new 用 refrain from 表达"克制不做",再加 anything new 强化"不做新事",与 status quo + inaction 完美对应,锁定 D。

55.
What does the passage say about taking some risk in decision making?
A)It is vital for one to reach the goal desired.
B)It is likely to entail serious consequences.
C)It will enable people to be more creative.
D)It will more often than not end in regret.

A(细节题)

What does the passage say about taking some risk in decision making?

What does the passage say about taking some risk in decision making? 主干 "What does the passage say",about 介词短语带出宾语 taking some risk;in decision making 是后置介词短语进一步限定 risk 发生的场景,层次清楚、无陷阱。

P6

In order to achieve a successful outcome or reward, some level of risk is almost always essential.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • In order to achieve a successful outcome or reward, some level of risk is almost always essentialIt is vital for one to reach the goal desired
    • some level of riskIt

It is vital for one to reach the goal desired 用 vital(=essential)+ reach the goal desired(=achieve outcome/reward)双重命中,锁定 A。

It is likely to entail serious consequences That's not to say that risk is always good

It will enable people to be more creative

原文 the possible chagrin of a decision maker who might otherwise prefer a new course but is unfortunately hindered 是说"不冒险/不作为"的人会懊恼;选项 It will more often than not end in regret
