Why aren't you curious about what happened?

"You suspended Ray Rice after our video," a reporter from TMZ challenged National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell the other day. "Why didn't you have the curiosity to go to the casino(赌场) yourself?" The implication of the question is that a more curious commissioner would have found a way to get the tape.

The accusation of incuriosity is one that we hear often, carrying the suggestion that there is something wrong with not wanting to search out the truth. "I have been bothered for a long time about the curious lack of curiosity," said a Democratic member of the New Jersey legislature back in July, referring to an insufficiently inquiring attitude on the part of an assistant to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie who chose not to ask hard questions about the George Washington Bridge traffic scandal. "Isn't the mainstream media the least bit curious about what happened?" wrote conservative writer Jennifer Rubin earlier this year, referring to the attack on Americans in Benghazi, Libya.

The implication, in each case, is that curiosity is a good thing, and a lack of curiosity is a problem. Are such accusations simply efforts to score political points for one's party? Or is there something of particular value about curiosity in and of itself?

The journalist Ian Leslie, in his new and enjoyable book Curious: The Desire to Know and Why Your Fate Depends on It, insists that the answer to that last question is 'Yes.' Leslie argues that curiosity is a much-overlooked human virtue, crucial to our success, and that we are losing it.

We are suffering, he writes, from a "serendipity deficit." The word "serendipity" was coined by Horace Walpole in an 1854 letter, from a tale of three princes who "were always making discoveries, by accident, of things they were not in search of," Leslie worries that the rise of the Internet, among other social and technological changes, has reduced our appetite for aimless adventures. No longer have we the inclination to let ourselves wander through fields of knowledge, ready to be surprised. Instead, we seek only the information we want.

Why is this a problem? Because without curiosity we will lose the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. We will see unimaginative governments and dying corporations make disastrous decisions. We will lose a vital part of what has made humanity as a whole so successful as a species.

Leslie presents considerable evidence for the proposition that the society as a whole is growing less curious. In the U.S. and Europe, for example, the rise of the Internet has led to a declining consumption of news from outside the reader's borders. But not everything is to be blamed on technology. The decline in interest in literary fiction is also one of the causes identified by Leslie. Reading literary fiction, he says, makes us more curious.

Moreover, in order to be curious, "you have to be aware of a gap in your knowledge in the first place." Although Leslie perhaps paints a bit broadly in contending that most of us are unaware of how much we don't know, he's surely right to point out that the problem is growing: "Google can give us the powerful illusion that all questions have definite answers."

Indeed, Google, for which Leslie expresses admiration, is also his frequent whipping body(替罪羊). He quotes Google co-founder Larry Page to the effect that the "perfect search engine" will "understand exactly what I mean and give me back exactly what I want." Elsewhere in the book, Leslie writes: "Google aims to save you from the thirst of curiosity altogether."

Somewhat nostalgically(怀旧地), he quotes John Maynard Keynes's justly famous words of praise to the bookstore: "One should enter it vaguely, almost in a dream, and allow what is there freely to attract and influence the eye. To walk the rounds of the bookshops, dipping in as curiosity dictates, should be an afternoon's entertainment." If only!

Citing the work of psychologists and cognitive(认知的) scientists, Leslie criticizes the received wisdom that academic success is the result of a combination of intellectual talent and hard work. Curiosity, he argues, is the third key factor—and a difficult one to preserve. If not cultivated, it will not survive: "Childhood curiosity is a collaboration between child and adult. The surest way to kill it is to leave it alone."

School education, he warns, is often conducted in a way that makes children incurious. Children of educated and upper-middle-class parents turn out to be far more curious, even at early ages, than children of working class and lower class families. That lack of curiosity produces a relative lack of knowledge, and the lack of knowledge is difficult if not impossible to compensate for later on.

Although Leslie's book isn't about politics, he doesn't entirely shy away from the problem. Political leaders, like leaders of other organizations, should be curious. They should ask questions at crucial moments. There are serious consequences, he warns, in not wanting to know.

He presents as an example the failure of the George W. Bush administration to prepare properly for the after-effects of the invasion of Iraq. According to Leslie, those who ridiculed former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld for his 2002 remark that we have to be wary of the "unknown unknowns" were mistaken. Rumsfeld's idea, Leslie writes, "wasn't absurd—it was smart." He adds, "The tragedy is that he didn't follow his own advice."

All of which brings us back to Goodell and the Christie case and Benghazi. Each critic in those examples is charging, in a different way, that someone in authority is intentionally being incurious. I leave it to the reader's political preference to decide which, if any, charges should stick. But let's be careful about demanding curiosity about the other side's weaknesses and remaining determinedly incurious about our own. We should be delighted to pursue knowledge for its own sake—even when what we find out is something we didn't particularly want to know.

通过 Ian Leslie 的 book 作为 authoritative foundation, establish 两个 core arguments:first, curiosity 是 crucial human virtue 对 success 至关重要;second, modern society 正在 experiencing curiosity decline,主要由于 Internet 和 technology 让我们 lose appetite for serendipitous discovery,只 seek targeted information 而非 aimless exploration

这个 section 构建了整篇文章的 theoretical foundation,通过 expert testimony (Leslie's work) 来 validate curiosity 的 importance 并 diagnose 当前的 crisis。

同时 identify root causes——除了 technology,还有 knowledge gap awareness 的 lacking 和 Google 创造的 illusion that all questions have definite answers,这让我们 lose awareness of what we don't know

Curiosity 不仅仅是 innate talent 或 hard work 的 byproduct,它是 third key factor for academic success,但 fragile and requires cultivation。Education system 经常 suppress curiosity,而 socioeconomic background 造成 curiosity gap between different classes。关键 insight 是 curiosity 是 collaboration between child and adult,如果 left alone 就会 die

Political leaders 和其他 organizational leaders 一样 should be curious,在 crucial moments 必须 ask questions。 Rumsfeld 的 "unknown unknowns" remark 实际上很 smart,悲剧是他 didn't follow his own advice

这个 section 通过 high-stakes political example 让 curiosity 的 importance 更加 tangible and urgent。Iraq War case 的 gravity 强化了整篇 argument 的 weight, showing curiosity 不是 abstract virtue 而是关乎 real-world consequences 的 critical quality。

文章 circle back 到 opening examples (Goodell, Christie, Benghazi),指出 each case 都 involve accusations of intentional incuriosity。作者 avoid taking political sides,但 issue 一个 balanced warning:我们 should be careful 不要 only demand curiosity about opponents' weaknesses 而对 our own side remain incurious。最终 call to action 是 pursue knowledge for its own sake, even when discoveries 是 uncomfortable or inconvenient

这个 conclusion 通过 returning to opening examples 实现 structural closure,同时 elevate discussion 到 broader principle about intellectual honesty 和 openness to uncomfortable truths。"We should be delighted to pursue knowledge for its own sake" 这个 final statement 完美 encapsulates 整篇文章的 core message,将 curiosity 从 political weapon 重新 frame 为 universal virtue

MAIN IDEA ·

这篇文章 title 用 'Why aren't you curious' 这个 rhetorical question 直接点出 curiosity 这个 central concept,首段通过 NFL Commissioner 的 real-world case 引出对 lack of curiosity 的 criticism,为全文定下 tone

同时 第5段-6 引入 'serendipity deficit' 和 'losing it',indicating a problem。

第4段 中 'Leslie argues that curiosity is a much-overlooked human virtue, crucial to our success, and that we are losing it' 是最 explicit 的 thesis statement。第6段 开头 'Why is this a problem? Because...' 第11段 'Curiosity, he argues, is the third key factor' 进一步 reinforce。这些含有 reporting verbs(argues, insists, warns)的句子是 author 在 presenting the core argument,它们是 thesis 的 direct expression

第13段 'Political leaders... should be curious' 和 第15段 'We should be delighted to pursue knowledge for its own sake' 是 prescriptive statements,表明 author 不仅在 argue that curiosity is important,更在 call for action to preserve it。Conclusion 从 specific examples(Goodell, Christie)回到 universal principle(pursue knowledge),这种 'specific → universal' 的 movement 是 argumentative essay 的 typical closing strategy,它 reinforces the thesis by showing its broad applicability

将前面步骤整合:title 和首段 establish 'curiosity' 作为 central concept;中间段的 repeated evaluative terms(virtue, crucial, success)确立 positive value judgment;第5段-7 的 'losing it', 'declining', 'deficit' 表明 negative current trend;conclusion 的 'we must cultivate' 确认 prescriptive stance。这三个 components 构成完整 thesis:'Curiosity (concept) is essential (value) but declining (trend), so we must preserve it (prescription)'。

MAIN IDEA ·

Curiosity is a vital human virtue essential for innovation and success, yet society is becoming less curious due to technology and education systems. We must actively cultivate curiosity in ourselves and children, while remaining open to discovering truths even when uncomfortable or politically inconvenient.

然后,第2段中的explanatory phrase 'not wanting to search out the truth'为我们提供了concrete的behavioral description。

首先,etymological explanation直接告诉我们serendipity的core meaning:'by accident'发现'not in search of'的东西,这establish了'意外发现'这个基本concept。 最后,与'seek only what we want'的contrast强化了serendipity的essential characteristic:非目标导向的偶然发现。

其次,被引用的Keynes的words描绘了一个idealized、lost的bookstore experience,filled with leisure和wonder。最后,'If only!' 这三个layers共同point to一个clear meaning:nostalgically是以一种longing for the past的manner。

首先,conditional sentence 'If not cultivated, it will not survive'establish了cultivation作为survival的prerequisite,这tells us cultivate是某种preservative action。 最后,其metaphorical application to curiosity,combined with整个paragraph关于education的discussion,confirm了cultivate指的是通过deliberate effort来develop和maintain某种quality的process。

首先,从argumentative context看,being wary被praised as smart而非absurd,这establish了其positive、prudent的connotation。其次,'be wary of'的syntactic structure,with 'of'引导potential threats,parallels其他caution-related expressions,这confirms其vigilant的nature。

信号词 challenged said wrote stated argued claimed noted observed remarked according to as [someone] put it in the words of quotes referring to

A leading educator questioned, "Why do students lack critical thinking skills?" This raises fundamental concerns about our education system.'

    P1 P2 P5 P7 P14 P15

    作者在全文中systematically使用了multiple examples来illustrate curiosity缺失的问题:Ray Rice事件、New Jersey的Bridge scandal、Benghazi attack、以及George W. Bush administration对Iraq战后准备不足。这些concrete examples让abstract的curiosity concept变得vivid and convincing。通过这些real-world cases,读者能够clearly see好奇心缺失带来的actual consequences,从而更容易accept作者关于curiosity is essential的central argument。

信号词 for example for instance such as consider take...as an example look at referring to presents as an example the case of in the case of like including

选择examples时要follow这个process:首先identify你想prove的abstract point;然后search for具体的、widely known或者personally experienced的cases;接着clearly explain这个example如何illustrate你的point;最后可以用multiple examples来strengthen你的argument。 [过渡词如For example/Consider/Take...as an example], [具体事例描述]. This demonstrates/illustrates/shows [回扣观点].' Lack of preparation leads to failure. Consider the 2008 financial crisis, where banks failed to anticipate risks. This demonstrates how complacency breeds disaster.'

    P6 P11 P12

作者在第6段explicitly构建了causality chain:"Because without curiosity we will lose the spirit of innovation... We will see unimaginative governments... We will lose a vital part..."

信号词 because since as without if therefore thus consequently as a result leads to results in causes due to owing to so hence

仿写: 运用因果论证时要follow这个structure:首先clearly state the cause(原因或条件);然后用causal connectors来transition;最后explicitly describe the effects(结果或后果)。可以用single cause leading to multiple effects或者multiple causes leading to single effect。关键是make the connection explicit and logical。仿写模板:'Because/Without/If [原因], [结果1]. 或者 '[结果] because/since/as [原因].' Without critical thinking skills, students struggle to analyze information. They become vulnerable to misinformation. Ultimately, this undermines democratic discourse.'

这个对比between "walk the rounds of bookshops, dipping in as curiosity dictates"和现代人seek only specific information的行为,vividly illustrates了我们已经lost的那种aimless exploration精神。通过juxtaposing past和present,作者让readers感受到the decline in curiosity isn't just抽象概念,而是tangible的cultural shift。

信号词 in contrast however on the other hand whereas while but unlike conversely alternatively rather than instead yet nostalgically used to...now

首先identify两个可以form有意义对比的subjects;然后describe第一个subject的characteristics;接着用transitional words like "however", "in contrast", "on the other hand"来signal the shift;最后describe第二个subject,确保the contrast is evident。可以用parallel structure来enhance the effect。 In contrast/However/On the other hand, [描述B的相反特征]. This contrast reveals/highlights Traditional classrooms encouraged debate and discussion. In contrast, modern online learning often isolates students in individual modules. This shift reveals how technology can undermine collaborative learning.'

Isn't the mainstream media the least bit curious about what happened?" Or is there something of particular value about curiosity in and of itself?"这些rhetorical questions不是seeking actual answers,而是prompting readers去think deeply about这些issues。特别是第3段的问题directly leads into文章的central argument, creating suspense同时也engaging readers in the thought process。这种修辞手法makes the text more interactive and persuasive。

信号词 why isn't aren't how can what if wouldn't shouldn't doesn't don't can we is there or is do we really

首先identify你想emphasize的point;然后formulate a question,其implied answer应该support你的argument;question应该positioned strategically,可以在introduce topic时用来engage readers,或者在making key points时用来emphasize。注意question的tone要appropriate,不要too aggressive or condescending。仿写模板:'Isn't it [形容词] that [现象/观点]?' 或者 'Why would [主语] [动词] if not for [原因]?' 或者 'Or is there [疑问内容]?' Why would companies invest billions in R&D if innovation weren't crucial to survival? Isn't it obvious that stagnation leads to irrelevance?'

把curiosity的缺失比作一种"deficit"(赤字),这个economic term的借用creates a sense of loss and imbalance。 这些比喻make complex ideas更accessible and impactful。

信号词 like as is serves as acts as becomes represents symbolizes metaphorical terms figuratively in a sense

仿写: 创造有效的比喻时要find appropriate comparisons that your audience can relate to。首先identify你想express的abstract concept;然后think of a concrete, familiar object or situation that shares某些characteristics with your concept;explicitly或implicitly draw the parallel,让comparison illuminate而不是confuse your point。避免mixed metaphors或者too obscure的references。 Critical thinking is the immune system of the mind, protecting against the viruses of misinformation.' 或者 'Education serves as society's engine, driving progress and innovation.'

    P8 P11

在第8段,作者通过"you have to be aware of a gap in your knowledge"这个prerequisite来explain curiosity的formation,然后analogize to Google creating "the powerful illusion that all questions have definite answers"。这个类比establishes a parallel:just as我们需要recognize knowledge gaps才能curious,Google's apparent omniscience makes us believe没有gaps,从而killing curiosity。

信号词 just as similar to analogous to like in the same way likewise similarly parallel to comparable to corresponds to mirrors

首先identify一个relatively unfamiliar或complex的concept你需要explain;然后find a more familiar situation that shares key structural similarities;explicitly point out the parallels, making clear what aspect you're comparing;最后draw the conclusion或insight from this comparison。确保analogy illuminates而不是distorts your point。仿写模板:'Just as [熟悉情况A的特征], [目标情况B] also [相似特征]. This parallel suggests/reveals [结论].' Just as a muscle atrophies without exercise, critical thinking skills deteriorate without regular practice. This parallel suggests that intellectual laziness breeds cognitive weakness.'

    P6

第6段中连续三个"We will"构成powerful的parallel structure:"We will lose the spirit... We will see unimaginative governments... We will lose a vital part..." 这种排比creates rhythmic emphasis, accumulating the dire consequences of losing curiosity。这种repetitive structure makes the warning more forceful and memorable,通过syntactic parallelism来reinforce the semantic connection between these consequences。排比的momentum builds up argumentative force, making作者的concern impossible to ignore。

信号词 we will we must we should it is they are without with through by [repeated sentence openings]

仿写: 运用排比时要create at least three parallel structures with similar grammatical patterns。首先identify你想emphasize的multiple related points;然后choose一个consistent grammatical structure(如"We will..." or "It is..." or "Without...");repeat this structure with variations in content而maintaining form的一致性;确保listed items之间有logical progression或cumulative effect。 Without critical thinking, we become victims of propaganda. Without analysis, we fall prey to conspiracy theories. Without reasoning, we surrender our intellectual autonomy.'

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
"Why didn't you have the curiosity to go to the casino yourself?" The implication of the question is that a more curious commissioner would have found a way to get the tape.

Why didn't you Why aren't you Isn't it Don't you think Shouldn't you Wouldn't it be better How could you not

这个 rhetorical question 的 subtext 是:专员 should have been curious enough 去主动 investigate,他的 lack of curiosity 导致了 failure to act。 通过 concrete case 开篇,作者 establish 了一个 critical framework,为后续 theoretical discussion 提供 real-world grounding。

    P2
"Isn't the mainstream media the least bit curious about what happened?"

Isn't Aren't Wasn't Weren't Doesn't Don't Hasn't

这段通过 three different examples(NFL、New Jersey、Benghazi)展示 lack of curiosity 是个 pervasive issue across different domains。 这种 evidence accumulation 为 author 后续 claim(society is losing curiosity)提供 empirical foundation,同时 establish 文章的 urgency 和 relevance。

    P3
Are such accusations simply efforts to score political points for one's party? Or is there something of particular value about curiosity in and of itself?

让步类 simply merely just only nothing but no more than purely

这个 rhetorical question 的 subtext 是:虽然 political motivation 可能 exist,但 curiosity 本身 has intrinsic value that transcends politics。

    P5
No longer have we the inclination to let ourselves wander through fields of knowledge, ready to be surprised. Instead, we seek only the information we want.

No longer Once...but now Used to...but Previously...however In the past...today Formerly...currently At one time...now

这里的 implication 是:targeted information seeking 虽然 efficient,但 eliminates serendipitous discovery that drives innovation。 这个 observation 直接 support 主旨关于 society losing curiosity,并且 identify technology as a key culprit。通过 poetic language("wander"、"surprised"),作者让 readers feel the loss emotionally,不只是 intellectually understand it。

    P6
We will see unimaginative governments and dying corporations make disastrous decisions. We will lose a vital part of what has made humanity as a whole so successful as a species.

We will see We will lose There will be This will lead to The result will be We are going to It will cause

这段的 subtext 是:losing curiosity 不是 minor cultural shift,而是 existential crisis for civilization。通过 invoke "humanity as a whole" 和 "as a species",作者 elevate curiosity from nice-to-have quality 到 survival necessity。这个 dramatic framing 直接 serve 主旨中的 "vital" 和 "essential",justifying 为什么 readers should care deeply about this issue。

    P7
But not everything is to be blamed on technology. The decline in interest in literary fiction is also one of the causes identified by Leslie.

But not everything However, not all Yet this isn't the only But that's not the whole story Still, not every Nevertheless, not just Though not solely

提到 literary fiction 这个 cultural factor 扩展了 problem 的 scope, suggesting 这是 broader cultural shift involving both technology and humanities。这个 nuanced view 让 argument 更 credible 并 complicate 简单的 solution(不是只要 limit technology 就能 fix problem)。

    P8
Google can give us the powerful illusion that all questions have definite answers.

言外之意批评的是 false confidence that instant answers provide。这直接 relate to 主旨中的 "actively cultivate curiosity"——如果我们 believe Google has all answers,就不会 develop genuine curiosity。这个 insight 解释了 why technology isn't just neutral tool but active agent in curiosity's decline。

    P9
Google aims to save you from the thirst of curiosity altogether.

反讽/悖论 aims to save you from protects you from frees you from spares you from rescues you from liberates you from relieves you of

这个 statement 的 subtext 是:Google 在 fundamentally redefine human relationship with knowledge, from active seeking to passive receiving,而这种 transformation is antithetical to curiosity。把 eliminate curiosity frame as "saving" 是 deeply ironic,因为 curiosity is what needs saving。这个 criticism 非常 central to 主旨——technology 不只是 reduce curiosity,而是 actively work against it through design philosophy。这让 solution 变得 more challenging because it's not just user behavior 问题,而是 systemic design issue。

    P10
"One should enter it vaguely, almost in a dream, and allow what is there freely to attract and influence the eye..." If only!

If only Would that How I wish What I wouldn't give One can only dream Alas Unfortunately

这两个字的 subtext incredibly rich:那种 serendipitous browsing experience 已经 largely disappeared from modern life。 这个 nostalgic moment reinforce 主旨中的 "losing" 和 need to "actively cultivate"——我们需要 conscious effort 去 recreate something that used to happen naturally。

    P11
If not cultivated, it will not survive: "Childhood curiosity is a collaboration between child and adult. The surest way to kill it is to leave it alone."

If not cultivated, it will not survive If not...will not Unless...will Without...cannot Failing to...results in In the absence of...leads to Should we not...then

这段的 implication profound:curiosity 不是 innate stable trait but fragile quality requiring active nurturing。言外之意是 passivity equals destruction("leave it alone" = "kill it")。这直接 address 主旨的 "actively cultivate" component——作者在 explain 为什么 "actively" is crucial。这也 shift responsibility to adults/society,making it clear 这不是 children's failure but our failure to support them。

    P12
Children of educated and upper-middle-class parents turn out to be far more curious, even at early ages, than children of working class and lower class families. That lack of curiosity produces a relative lack of knowledge, and the lack of knowledge is difficult if not impossible to compensate for later on.

对比类(程度对比) far more significantly more considerably greater vastly different markedly higher substantially less dramatically fewer

这段的 subtext 是:curiosity gap is not just individual problem but social justice issue that perpetuates inequality。言外之意批评 education system that fails to compensate for家庭背景 differences。这个 observation complicate 主旨的 solution——不是简单地 "cultivate curiosity" in general,而是要 address structural inequalities。这也 explain 为什么这个 issue matters beyond innovation(主旨中的 "innovation and success")——它关系到 social mobility and equity。

    P14
According to Leslie, those who ridiculed former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld for his 2002 remark that we have to be wary of the "unknown unknowns" were mistaken. Rumsfeld's idea, Leslie writes, "wasn't absurd—it was smart." He adds, "The tragedy is that he didn't follow his own advice."

    反驳式对比 wasn't absurd—it was smart wasn't X—it was Y not X but Y far from X, it was Y contrary to X, it was Y rather than X, it was Y instead of X, actually Y

这段的 subtext multilayered:being curious about unknowns was actually wise policy, failure wasn't in concept but execution。更深层的 implication 是:即使 intellectually understanding curiosity's importance 不足够——leaders must act on it。这个 example reinforce 主旨的 practical dimension("serious consequences")并 show that lack of curiosity has real-world policy implications,不只是 abstract cultural concern。The "tragedy" framing emphasize preventable nature of failure, making it cautionary tale。

    P15
But let's be careful about demanding curiosity about the other side's weaknesses and remaining determinedly incurious about our own.

警示/劝诫类 let's be careful about we should be wary of we must avoid let's not fall into we need to guard against let's be mindful of we ought to watch out for

这段的 powerful subtext 是:curiosity must be principle-driven rather than politically convenient。言外之意批评 selective curiosity that only scrutinize opponents。这个 meta-level observation 完善 主旨的 "uncomfortable or politically inconvenient" aspect——真正的 curiosity requires intellectual honesty and willingness to question our own assumptions。这个 concluding caveat 让整个 argument 显得 more credible 因为作者 acknowledge potential misuse of his own reasoning, demonstrating the very intellectual integrity he advocates。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

如果作者用 multiple examples 加 probing questions 来开篇,说明他想 guide readers toward a particular conclusion,而不是简单地 present facts。

如果作者对某个 expert's view 进行 uncritical presentation,并且用 positive language 来 describe the source,那说明作者 shares that viewpoint。这里作者说 Leslie's book is enjoyable 并且 directly quotes Leslie's argument without any rebuttal,这就是 alignment 的明确信号。

如果结尾用 modal verbs (should, must) 和 inclusive pronouns (we, us) 加 positive emotion words (delighted),那作者的 intent 是 persuasion,不是 neutral analysis。这里作者用 we should be delighted 是在 urging readers to adopt a mindset,这是 advocacy 最明显的标志。

这篇文章的 arc 是:curiosity is questioned (开头) → curiosity is essential (中间) → lack of curiosity has serious consequences (中后) → we must value curiosity (结尾)。这种 progressive intensification 加上 actionable conclusion,明确表明作者不是在 explore multiple perspectives,而是在 make a case for one position。

  • enjoyable P4

用 enjoyable 而不是 controversial 或 thought-provoking,表明作者不只是 presenting Leslie's ideas,而是 endorsing them。

同类词 valuable admirable impressive compelling insightful

  • insists P4

作者用 insists 这个 strong reporting verb 来 introduce Leslie's claim,并且紧接着说 the answer is 'Yes'。 Leslie is making a strong claim。作者选择用这个词并且不加任何 qualification,说明他 agrees with the forcefulness of this claim。

同类词 argues contends maintains asserts claims

  • disastrous P6

Disastrous 是 high-intensity negative adjective,用来描述 lack of curiosity 的 potential consequences。 如果作者持 neutral stance,他会用 problematic 或 concerning;选择 disastrous 说明他 views this with alarm 并且想 convey urgency to readers。

同类词 catastrophic devastating terrible horrible dire

  • tragedy P14

Tragedy 是 extremely strong negative noun,作者用它来评价 Rumsfeld 没有 follow his own advice about unknown unknowns。 使用这种 dramatic language 来描述 historical event,表明作者想 emphasize the high stakes of curiosity。

同类词 disaster catastrophe calamity crisis failure

  • should P15

Should 是 modal verb of obligation,作者在最后一段用了两次 should (should be delighted, should be careful),这是 prescriptive language—telling readers what to do。在议论文中,从 descriptive (what is) 转向 prescriptive (what should be) 标志着作者从 analysis 转向 advocacy。这里作者 clearly states his expectations for reader behavior。

同类词 must need to ought to have to it is essential to

  • warns P12

Warns 是 cautionary reporting verb,作者用它来 introduce Leslie's view about school education。 选择 warns 而不是 notes 或 observes,表明作者 shares Leslie's sense of alarm。

同类词 cautions alerts advises against sounds alarm raises concern

  • delighted P15

选择 delighted 而不是 willing 或 ready,表明作者 wants to elevate curiosity from duty to joy。

同类词 thrilled pleased glad happy joyful

  • considerable evidence P7

作者说 Leslie presents considerable evidence,这是 quantity + quality 的 endorsement。Considerable 暗示 both abundance and significance,表明作者认为 Leslie's case is well-supported。这种 evidential language 表明作者不只是 presenting Leslie's view,而是 vouching for its credibility。

同类词 substantial proof strong support compelling data clear indication solid foundation

说明文的 title 通常是 neutral 的主题陈述(如'The Process of Photosynthesis'),新闻报道的 opening 会直接呈现 factual events 和 when/where/who。

而议论文的 evidence 是 strategically selected 为了 prove a point,有明显的 cause-effect reasoning 或 comparison/contrast 来 strengthen argument。

议论文会 actively engage with counterarguments 来 strengthen own position,用'although、however、critics argue that'等 adversative markers 展示 argumentative complexity。
