There is a marked difference between the education which every one gets from living with others and the deliberate educating of the young. In the former case the education is incidental; it is natural and important, but it is not the express reason of the association. It may be said that the measure of the worth of any social institution is its effect in enlarging and improving experience, but this effect is not a part of its original motive. Religious associations began, for example, in the desire to secure the favor of overruling powers and to ward off evil influences; family life in the desire to gratify appetites and secure family perpetuity; systematic labor, for the most part, because of enslavement to others, etc. Only gradually was the by-product of the institution noted, and only more gradually still was this effect considered as a directive factor in the conduct of the institution. Even today, in our industrial life, apart from certain values of industriousness and thrift, the intellectual and emotional reaction of the forms of human association under which the world's work is carried on receives little attention as compared with physical output.

But in dealing with the young, the fact of association itself as an immediate human fact, gains in importance. While it is easy to ignore in our contact with them the effect of our acts upon their disposition, it is not so easy as in dealing with adults. The need of training is too evident and the pressure to accomplish a change in their attitude and habits is too urgent to leave these consequences wholly out of account. Since our chief business with them is to enable them to share in a common life we cannot help considering whether or not we are forming the powers which will secure this ability. If humanity has made some headway in realizing that the ultimate value of every institution is its distinctively human effect we may well believe that this lesson has been learned largely through dealings with the young.

We are thus led to distinguish, within the broad educational process which we have been so far considering, a more formal kind of education – that of direct tuition or schooling. In undeveloped social groups, we find very little formal teaching and training. These groups mainly rely for instilling needed dispositions into the young upon the same sort of association which keeps adults loyal to their group.

  1. P1

    Incidental Education in Social Life

Education arises incidentally from social institutions whose original purposes are usually non-educational.

  2. P2

Why the Young Require Deliberate Education

Dealings with the young make deliberate education necessary because they must be prepared for common life.

  3. P3

    The Emergence of Formal Schooling

Formal schooling is a distinct, intentional educational form that is limited in less developed societies.

Why did social institutions eventually come to treat their educational effect as a guiding consideration?

    • A Because educational improvement had always been the express reason for forming social institutions.
    • B Because religious and family associations were created chiefly to provide systematic schooling.
    • C Because an initially incidental by-product was gradually recognized and then used to direct institutional conduct.
    • D Because physical output proved less important than intellectual and emotional reactions in industry.
    • E Because social institutions were designed to eliminate evil influences through collective discipline.
    • F Because adults demanded that institutions replace natural education with deliberate training.

  2. 第 2 段 定位词 association the young difficult to disregard

Why is the effect of association especially difficult to disregard when educating the young?

    • A Because young people are naturally more industrious and thrifty than adults.
    • B Because adults can acquire the ability to share in common life without any social contact.
    • C Because formal schooling is the only reliable way to secure social loyalty.
    • D Because the urgent task of shaping their dispositions and habits for a shared life makes such effects impossible to leave out of account.
    • E Because the educational effects of association are already fully understood by all institutions.
    • F Because the main purpose of education is to increase physical output.

该项整合了段中的两层理由:一是 training 的 need 太明显、改变 attitude 和 habits 的 pressure 太 urgent;二是与 young 打交道的 chief business 是使其能够 share in a common life。因此,association 对 disposition 的影响不能被 leave out of account。障碍在于正确项没有逐字复现原文,而是将 disposition、attitude、habits 压缩为 shaping,将 common life 转化为 for a shared life;这是考研常用的同义概括。

  3. 第 3 段 定位词 undeveloped social groups principal means needed dispositions

What is the principal means by which undeveloped social groups shape the needed dispositions of the young?

    • A They establish extensive systems of direct tuition for every young member.
    • B They depend primarily on adults' intellectual and emotional reactions to industrial work.
    • C They use religious associations mainly to secure the favor of overruling powers.
    • D They leave the formation of young people's habits wholly out of account.
    • E They mainly rely on ordinary group association, rather than extensive formal teaching and training.
    • F They regard physical output as the directive factor in all educational conduct.

该项准确还原两项关键信息:这些群体存在 very little formal teaching and training;它们 mainly rely upon the same sort of association 来 instill needed dispositions into the young。rather than 并非说 formal teaching 完全不存在,而是对应 very little 与 mainly rely 所构成的主次关系。

作者通过 religious associations、family life、systematic labor 等 examples 来 illustrate 社会制度最初的 original motive 并非 education,其 educational effect 只是 by-product,而且这个 effect 被 considered as directive factor 是一个 gradual process。

它 establishes 了 natural education 和 formal education 的 dichotomy,为后文 focusing on deliberate education of the young 做了 necessary groundwork。通过 contrasting 两种 education forms,作者 sets up 了讨论 formal schooling 的 logical starting point。

这个 paragraph 通过 adversative transition 'But' 开启了 focused discussion on educating the young。作者 argues 当 dealing with the young 时,association 的 immediate human fact 变得更 important,因为 the effect of our acts upon their disposition 不能像 dealing with adults 那样被 ignore。文中强调了 two key reasons:the need of training 太 evident,而且 the pressure to accomplish change 太 urgent。最后 author 提出了 critical insight:正是通过 dealings with the young, humanity 才 learned 了 every institution 的 ultimate value 在于其 distinctively human effect。

它 explains why deliberate education 对 the young 是 necessary and inevitable:不是 optional choice 而是 urgent need。通过 contrasting education of young 和 adults,这个 paragraph demonstrates 了 intentional shaping 的 rationale,为下一段 introducing formal schooling 做了 logical bridge。

这个 concluding paragraph 以 'thus' 引出了 logical consequence:前文讨论 leads to distinction 在 broad educational process 中识别出 more formal kind,即 direct tuition or schooling。作者进一步 contrasts undeveloped social groups(little formal teaching, rely on association)和 developed societies(需要 formal education)。

这个 final paragraph 作为 conclusion 直接 articulates 文章的 thesis:formal schooling 是 distinct, intentional form of education。连接词 'thus' explicitly signals 这是前文 reasoning 的 logical outcome。通过 introducing the term 'formal education' 并 contrasting primitive societies 和 developed ones, conclusion 将前两段的 abstract discussion 转化为 concrete concept(schooling)。它 completes the argumentative journey 从 recognizing incidental education's limits 到 acknowledging young's special needs 最终到 establishing formal education as necessary institution。

第二段开头的 'But in dealing with the young' 是个 critical turning point,标志着作者从 general education 转向 deliberate education of the young,这个 shift 正是文章 main argument 的核心所在

第三段的 'We are thus led to distinguish' 是个 conclusive signal,作者在这里 explicitly state 了从前面 discussion 中 derive 出的 distinction between broad educational process 和 formal education,这正是文章的 ultimate point

这篇文章通过三步 logical progression 完成论证:首段 establish contrast(natural vs. deliberate education),二段 highlight the特殊性 of educating the young(intentional shaping),三段 conclude with formal distinction。这个 three-part structure 共同支撑了作者关于 formal schooling as distinct and intentional form 的 thesis

主旨信号词 marked difference P1 deliberate P1 But P2 ultimate value P2 thus led to distinguish P3 formal P3

MAIN IDEA ·

The author argues that while education occurs naturally through social association, formal schooling represents a distinct, intentional form of education that emerged from recognizing the importance of deliberately shaping young people's dispositions to enable their participation in common life.

首先,preposition into 表明这是一个 directional transfer,把某物放入 the young。

Etymology 显示 tuition 源于 watching over 和 guiding,这正是 formal education 的 essence。

    P1

作者用 religious associations、family life 和 systematic labor 这三个 concrete examples 来支撑 incidental education 的观点。

信号词 for example for instance such as take...as an example to illustrate namely specifically in particular

【Example type A】 began in 【original purpose A】; 【Example type B】 in 【original purpose B】; 【Example type C】, for the most part, because of 【original purpose C】, etc.

    P1 P2

作者在第一段对比了 education from living with others 和 deliberate educating of the young,在第二段又对比了 dealing with the young 和 dealing with adults。 通过这个 juxtaposition,作者论证了为什么我们需要区分 formal schooling 这种 more formal kind of education。

信号词 but however while whereas in contrast on the other hand unlike as compared with it is not so easy as

    仿写: 要运用对比,先确定 comparison points:用 while、but、whereas 这类 contrastive connectors。结构上可以用 A...but B 或 in the former case...in dealing with 的模式。模版:【While/In dealing with A】, 【characteristic of A】, 【but/it is not so easy as】 in 【dealing with B】. 【Characteristic of B】 is 【distinctive feature】 as compared with 【characteristic of A】.

    P1 P2

第一段中 'because of enslavement to others' 和第二段的 'Since our chief business with them is to enable them to share in a common life' 体现了 causal reasoning。作者解释了 systematic labor 的起源 origin 以及为什么 dealing with the young 时我们必须考虑 their ability to share common life。

信号词 because because of since as for due to owing to thus therefore so hence consequently

    仿写: 使用因果论证时,明确 identify causal links:用 because, since, as 引导原因,用 thus, therefore, so 引导结果。可以用 'Since 【reason】, 【consequence】' 或 '【effect】 because of 【cause】' 的结构。模版:Since 【our objective/situation】 is to 【goal】, we cannot help 【necessary action/consideration】. / 【Phenomenon】, for the most part, because of 【underlying cause】.

    P2

第二段末尾 'If humanity has made some headway in realizing that the ultimate value of every institution is its distinctively human effect we may well believe that this lesson has been learned largely through dealings with the young' 使用了 analogical reasoning。

信号词 just as similarly likewise in the same way analogously correspondingly by analogy parallel to

仿写: 构建类比时,找到两个 domains 之间的 structural parallels:用 just as...so、similarly、in the same way 等连接。 If 【known situation/progress in domain A】, we may well believe that 【similar pattern in domain B】. / Just as 【phenomenon in A】, so 【analogous phenomenon in B】.

    P1

第一段中 'Religious associations began...family life in the desire...systematic labor, for the most part, because of...'

【Element A】 began/emerged in 【purpose A】; 【Element B】 in 【purpose B】; 【Element C】, 【additional modifier】, because of 【purpose C】, etc.

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
but this effect is not a part of its original motive

转折类 but however yet nevertheless nonetheless still though

这对 main argument 的作用是 establish the problem:人们需要 more conscious attention to the educational dimensions of social life,这正是 formal schooling 出现的 underlying reason

    P1
the intellectual and emotional reaction of the forms of human association under which the world's work is carried on receives little attention as compared with physical output

模糊限制语 little attention little few hardly scarcely barely seldom

通过 little attention 这个 understated expression,作者 implicitly criticizes 工业社会的 narrow focus on material productivity。The underlying message 是:我们过度 prioritize physical output 而 neglect the human and educational dimensions of work。这个 critique serves the main thesis by providing a contemporary example, showing that even today 人们 still fail to fully appreciate the educational aspects of social institutions。这 reinforces 作者关于 need for conscious educational effort 的 overall argument

    P2
it is not so easy as in dealing with adults

委婉表达 not so easy not simple difficult to ignore hard to overlook cannot help impossible to avoid no choice but

作者用 not so easy 这个 understated phrase 传达的 deeper meaning 是:在 dealing with young people 时,教育效果 becomes impossible to ignore,这是 a fundamental difference from adult associations。The implication 支撑了 main thesis:正是因为 young people 的 special characteristics(their need for training, the urgency of shaping their dispositions),人类才 developed formal education。这个 observation serves as a transition, explaining why deliberate education emerged specifically for the young

    P2
If humanity has made some headway in realizing that the ultimate value of every institution is its distinctively human effect we may well believe that this lesson has been learned largely through dealings with the young

If if may might could would should

作者通过 if conditional 表面上 present 一个 tentative hypothesis,实际上 is affirming a historical progression:人类确实在 gradually recognizing institutions 的 educational value,而这个 recognition 主要 comes from experience with educating the young。The implication 是 dealings with children served as a catalyst for broader educational consciousness。这 supports the thesis by explaining the historical emergence of formal education——不是 arbitrary invention,而是 humanity's growing awareness of education's importance, driven specifically by the needs of the young

    P3
In undeveloped social groups, we find very little formal teaching and training

模糊限制语 very little few hardly any minimal scarce rare almost no

Very little formal teaching 这个 observation 传达的 deeper meaning 是:formal education 是 a product of social development,不是 universal or natural。原始社会 rely on informal association,而 formal schooling 是 more complex societies 的 phenomenon。这个 implication completes the author's argument arc:从 explaining why education matters(第1段),到 why it's especially important for the young(第2段),最后到 how formal education emerged as societies developed(第3段)。这 establishes formal schooling as a distinct and evolved form of education

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

Transitional words 尤其是 but, however, yet 在议论文中是 attitude indicators。它们 mark 作者从 presenting background information 转向 expressing their real focus。After the transition,作者投入的 attention 和 explanatory effort 会 increase,这 signals 他们的 preferred perspective。

当作者 describe something 为 ultimate value 或者 use progress-oriented terms(headway),they're not being neutral—they're advocating。这种 evaluative language 尤其在 paired with modal verbs of necessity(cannot help, must)时,creates a strong endorsing tone。

议论文的 depth of explanation 反映 authorial commitment。如果作者 merely states positions without explanation,那可能是 neutral reporting。但如果 they trace historical development(only gradually, only more gradually still),provide causal links(since, because),并 build logical chains(thus led to),这 shows 他们在 construct an argument to persuade, indicating investment in the position。

议论文的 overall attitude 来自 cumulative effect of linguistic choices。单个 word 可能 ambiguous,但当 descriptive analysis, value terms, causal reasoning, 和 emphasis markers 都 point in the same direction,作者的 stance becomes clear。这篇文章的 every element—from contrast structures to evaluative vocabulary—works together to support 一个 perspective about education's importance, making the endorsing attitude unmistakable。

  • marked difference P1

Marked difference 是个 strong descriptive phrase 用来 establish 一个 meaningful contrast。在议论文开头,作者 use it to highlight 两种 education types 的 distinction,这为后续 argument 奠定基础。这个词的 strength(marked 而非 simple difference)shows 作者认为这个 distinction 是 worth attending to,为后面 emphasize formal education's value 做铺垫。

同类词 significant distinction notable contrast striking divergence clear separation pronounced gap

  • gains in importance P2

Gains in importance 是个 progressive value phrase,直接 express 某事物的 increasing significance。 Progressive language(gains, not just 'is important')suggests 作者 sees positive development and improvement,这是 supportive attitude 的典型 marker。

同类词 becomes more significant increases in value grows in relevance rises in priority assumes greater weight

  • too urgent P2

Too urgent 配合 too evident 创造一种 compelling necessity。 这不是 neutral description—作者在 emphasize 某事的 pressing nature, pushing readers to recognize its importance。这种 urgency markers 配合 negative construction(cannot ignore, cannot help)create strong persuasive force。

同类词 too evident too crucial cannot be ignored demands attention requires immediate action

  • cannot help considering P2

Cannot help 是个 modal expression of inevitability,它 removes agency and choice, suggesting 某个 action 或 consideration 是 unavoidable。在议论文中,when authors say they 'cannot help' doing something, they're actually asserting that thing SHOULD be done—it's a rhetorical device to present their preference as logical necessity。这 strengthens 作者的 position by making it seem inevitable rather than merely preferred。

同类词 cannot avoid addressing must recognize are compelled to examine have no choice but to inevitably confront

  • ultimate value P2

Ultimate value 是个 superlative evaluative phrase,它 places something at the top of a value hierarchy。 说某事有 ultimate value 不是 neutral observation—it's a clear endorsement, asserting this thing is most important。作者用它来 elevate 'distinctively human effect' as the highest standard, showing what they believe education should prioritize。

同类词 highest worth fundamental importance essential significance core meaning deepest purpose

  • distinctively human P2

Distinctively human 是个 qualifying phrase with positive connotation in educational contexts。它 separates 'human effects' from other types of outcomes(比如 physical output),elevating the former。在议论文中,when authors use distinctively/uniquely to describe something, they're marking it as special and worthy of attention。这个 phrase 配合 ultimate value 使用,creates a strong endorsement of human-centered educational goals。

同类词 uniquely human essentially human characteristically human fundamentally human genuinely human

  • headway P2

Headway 是个 progress-oriented metaphor, suggesting positive movement toward a goal。在议论文中,progress language 透露 authors see something as moving in the right direction。说 humanity has made headway 表明作者 views this change positively—it's development, not decline。这种 optimistic framing of historical change supports 作者的 endorsement of recognizing education's human effects。

同类词 progress advancement improvement development strides

  • thus led to P3

Thus led to 是个 causal connector presenting logical consequence。在议论文中,这类 phrases show 作者在 build a reasoned argument, tracing cause-effect relationships。它 suggests 前面的 reasoning naturally leads to the conclusion, making the argument seem logical and inevitable。这种 tight logical structure 是 authors 用来 support their position through rational demonstration rather than mere assertion 的 strategy。

同类词 therefore results in consequently produces accordingly brings about hence gives rise to so culminates in

第一段里的 'but this effect is not...'、'Only gradually was...'、'Even today' 这些 connectors 显示作者在 construct a logical progression。说明文的 transitions 是 sequential 的比如 'first'、'then'、'finally',用来 organize information。新闻的 transitions 是 temporal 的比如 'yesterday'、'following the event'。

议论文中作者会 use first-person plural 'we' 来 involve readers in the reasoning process,并用 modal verbs like 'may'、'should'、'cannot' 来 express judgments。 这里的 'we cannot help' 和 'we may well believe' 是 clear argumentative stance。

议论文会用 'thus'、'therefore'、'consequently' 来 signal 从 premises 到 conclusion 的 logical movement。说明文的 conclusion 只是 summary of information,用 'in summary'、'to conclude'。 这里的 'thus led to distinguish' 表明整篇是在 argue for a distinction,最后 arrive at a logical endpoint。

这篇文章的 every paragraph 都在 advance the central argument about education 的 nature and purpose,而不是 simply explaining education 或 reporting educational events。The presence of thesis、reasoning、evaluation、conclusion 四要素 conclusively identifies argumentative writing。
