Part III Section C (1)
Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.
Passage One
Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.
P1Textbooks represent an 11 billion dollar industry, up from $8 billion in 2014. Textbook publisher Pearson is the largest publisher—of any kind—in the world.

P2It costs about $1 million to create a new textbook. A freshman textbook will have dozens of contributors, from subject-matter experts through graphic and layout artists to expert reviewers and classroom testers. Textbook publishers connect professors, instructors and students in ways that alternatives, such as open e-textbooks and open educational resources, simply do not. This connection happens not only by means of collaborative development, review and testing, but also at conferences where faculty regularly decide on their textbooks and curricula for the coming year.

P3It is true that textbook publishers have recently reported losses, largely due to students renting or buying used print textbooks. But this can be chalked up to the excessively high cost of their books—which has increased over 1,000 percent since 1977. A restructuring of the textbook industry may well be in order. But this does not mean the end of the textbook itself.

P4While they may not be as dynamic as an iPad, textbooks are not passive or lifeless. For example, over the centuries, they have simulated(模拟) dialogues in a number of ways. From 1800 to the present day, textbooks have done this by posing questions for students to answer inductively(归纳性地). That means students are asked to use their individual experience to come up with answers to general questions. Today's psychology texts, for example, ask: "How much of your personality do you think you inherited?" while ones in physics say: "How can you predict where the ball you tossed will land?"

P5Experts observe that "textbooks come in layers, something like an onion". For an active learner, engaging with a textbook can be an interactive experience: Readers proceed at their own pace. They "customize" their books by engaging with different layers and linkages. Highlighting, Post-It notes, dog-ears and other techniques allow for further customization that students value in print books over digital forms of books.

46.
What does the passage say about open educational resources?
A)They contribute to teaching as much as to learning.
B)They don't profit as much as traditional textbooks do.
C)They can't connect professors and students as textbooks do.
D)They compete fiercely for customers with textbook producers.

C(细节题)

What does the passage say about open educational resources?

What does the passage say about open educational resources?,主干 "the passage say what about open educational resources",about 引出谈论对象。

P2

Textbook publishers connect professors, instructors and students in ways that alternatives, such as open e-textbooks and open educational resources, simply do not.

They contribute to teaching as much as to learning

They don't profit as much as traditional textbooks do 谈"利润不如传统课本",原文 open educational resources, simply do not 否定的是"连接师生",不是"赚钱"。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • in ways that alternatives, such as open e-textbooks and open educational resources, simply do notThey can't connect professors and students as textbooks do
    • connect professors, instructors and studentsconnect professors and students

They can't connect professors and students as textbooks do 正面贴合,直接选它。

They compete fiercely for customers with textbook producers

47.
What is the main cause of the publishers' losses?
A)Failure to meet student need.
B)Industry restructuring.
C)Emergence of e-books.
D)Falling sales.

D(细节题)

What is the main cause of the publishers' losses?

What is the main cause of the publishers' losses? 主干 "what is the main cause",of the publishers' losses 是后置修饰,限定 cause 的归属。

P3

It is true that textbook publishers have recently reported losses, largely due to students renting or buying used print textbooks.

Failure to meet student need

A restructuring of the textbook industry may well be in order

    • students renting or buying used print textbooksFalling sales

48.
What does the textbook industry need to do?
A)Reform its structures.
B)Cut its retail prices.
C)Find replacements for printed textbooks.
D)Change its business strategy periodically.

A(细节题)

What does the textbook industry need to do?

What does the textbook industry need to do? 助动词 does 提前的特殊疑问句,主干 "the textbook industry need to do what"。

P3

A restructuring of the textbook industry may well be in order.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • A restructuring of the textbook industryReform its structures
    • may well be in orderneed to do

Cut its retail prices 说要降零售价,原文虽提到 excessively high cost of their books,但没说"该降价",只说"该重组"。

Find replacements for printed textbooks But this does not mean the end of the textbook itself

Change its business strategy periodically

49.
What are students expected to do in the learning process?
A)Think carefully before answering each question.
B)Ask questions based on their own understanding.
C)Answer questions using their personal experience.
D)Give answers showing their respective personality.

C(细节题)

What are students expected to do in the learning process?

What are students expected to do in the learning process? 被动结构 be expected to do,相当于 are asked / are required to do;in the learning process 是状语,限定场景。

P4

From 1800 to the present day, textbooks have done this by posing questions for students to answer inductively. That means students are asked to use their individual experience to come up with answers to general questions.

Think carefully before answering each question 说"作答前要仔细思考",原文 P4 没出现 carefully / think before 这种要求,只说"用个人经验"。

Ask questions based on their own understanding 说"学生提问",但原文 textbooks have done this by posing questions 明确是"课本提问",学生只负责作答。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • students are asked to use their individual experience to come up with answers to general questionsAnswer questions using their personal experience
    • are asked toare expected to do

Answer questions using their personal experience

Give answers showing their respective personality How much of your personality do you think you inherited?

50.
What do experts say about students using textbooks?
A)They can digitalize the prints easily.
B)They can purchase customized versions.
C)They can learn in an interactive way.
D)They can adapt the material themselves.

C(细节题)

What do experts say about students using textbooks?

What do experts say about students using textbooks? 主干 "experts say what about students using textbooks",using textbooks 是现在分词短语作 students 的后置定语。

P5

For an active learner, engaging with a textbook can be an interactive experience: Readers proceed at their own pace.

    They can digitalize the prints easily 说"可以轻松把纸书数字化",原文 P5 谈的是 highlighting / Post-It notes / dog-ears 这些纸书使用方式,没说学生能把纸书"数字化"。

They can purchase customized versions They "customize" their books by engaging with different layers and linkages

    • engaging with a textbook can be an interactive experienceThey can learn in an interactive way
    • engaging with a textbookstudents using textbooks

They can learn in an interactive way 直接对应 interactive,立选。

They can adapt the material themselves 说"学生可以自己改编教材",看似贴近 customize,但 adapt the material 在英语里更多指"改编教材内容",而原文 They "customize" their books 指的是"在书上做高亮便签"这种"使用方式上的个性化",不是改动教材内容本身。
