Why you should give the gift of mindfulness this New Year

Mindfulness has been shown to have a number of meaningful health benefits — it can help reduce anxiety and promote healing in those suffering from chronic illness.

The practice is based on an insight first described in ancient Buddhist texts that human beings have the capacity to observe experience without being caught up in it. This means simply that it is possible to observe ourselves having a craving, or a happy thought, or even a scary emotion, without reacting in the moment in a way that amplifies the feeling or sends the mind spiraling off into thinking about old memories or anticipating events.

This practice of mindfulness can help calm the mind and the body as we learn not to react to experience with likes and dislikes or judgments of good and bad. It does not make us cold or indifferent but more fully present.

One of the challenges of practicing mindfulness in our contemporary world is that there has been a profound transformation in human attention. The artist Jenny Odell argues that in our "attention economy" human attention has been transformed into a commodity that big corporations buy and sell. This economy rests on a technological revolution of mobile phones and social media that makes it possible for corporations to target our attention with their content at every moment.

The devices most people use are a perpetual diversion from the present moment. The result is that it can feel as though our ability to focus, and be fully present, has been stolen. But mindfulness can help us resist the attention economy and relish the things that make life special, like being together with those we love.

Most mindfulness research focuses on the individual benefits of the practice, but some scholars assert that we can not only practice mindfulness for ourselves but also practice it for others. It can help us build stronger, healthier relationships.

The sad truth is that living in the attention economy, most of us have become bad listeners. However, just as it is possible to watch ourselves having an experience without reacting, it's possible to watch another person have an experience without getting tied up in reactivity and judgment.

The gift of mindfulness is a practice of listening with compassion to others describe their experiences. To give this gift means putting away your phone, turning off social media, and setting aside other common distractions. It means practicing being fully present in another person's presence and listening to them with complete attention without judgment, while resisting the urge to make the interaction about you.

If we judge the value of gifts based on their price, this gift may seem worthless, but in a distracted world, it is a precious one.

SELF CHECK ·

What health benefits of mindfulness are mentioned?

    • A It completely cures chronic illness.
    • B It prevents people from having negative emotions.
    • C It can reduce anxiety and promote healing for people with chronic illness.
    • D It improves physical strength in healthy adults.
    • E It eliminates the need for medical treatment.
    • F It mainly helps people make better financial decisions.

    正确项完整保留两个并列信息:reduce anxiety 与 promote healing,并准确保留对象限制 people with chronic illness。

What capacity is central to the Buddhist insight behind mindfulness?

    • A The ability to avoid all cravings and happy thoughts.
    • B The ability to predict future events accurately.
    • C The ability to recall old memories in detail.
    • D The ability to observe experience without being caught up in it.
    • E The ability to react immediately to frightening emotions.
    • F The ability to judge experiences as good or bad.

该项压缩复述了核心定义:observe experience 与 without being caught up in it 缺一不可。

According to the passage, mindfulness does not make people cold or indifferent but makes them what?

    • A Unable to feel any strong emotion.
    • B More likely to judge others' behavior.
    • C Less aware of what is happening around them.
    • D More dependent on other people's approval.
    • E More fully present.
    • F More capable of controlling other people's feelings.

  4. 第 4 段 定位词 corporations at every moment

What makes it possible for corporations to target people's attention at every moment?

    • A The decline of people's interest in social relationships.
    • B Ancient Buddhist teachings about observation.
    • C The high price of online content.
    • D People's growing ability to ignore advertisements.
    • E The practice of listening without judgment.
    • F The technological revolution of mobile phones and social media.

How can mindfulness help people respond to the attention economy?

    • A It helps them resist distraction and relish meaningful time with loved ones.
    • B It encourages people to spend more time on social media.
    • C It allows corporations to sell attention more efficiently.
    • D It guarantees that people will never lose focus.
    • E It makes digital devices less technologically advanced.
    • F It replaces personal relationships with online content.

正确项整合了 resist the attention economy 与 relish the things that make life special,并把例子 being together with those we love 转化为同义表达。

What do some scholars assert about practicing mindfulness?

    • A Mindfulness should be studied only for its individual health benefits.
    • B Mindfulness can be practiced for others as well as for oneself, strengthening relationships.
    • C Mindfulness is effective only when practiced alone.
    • D Mindfulness can eliminate all conflicts in relationships.
    • E Mindfulness is mainly a strategy for corporations.
    • F Mindfulness prevents people from caring about others.

该项保留 not only...but also 的核心扩展:for ourselves 与 for others,并连接其结果 stronger, healthier relationships。

以 not only...but also 的并列框架核验,正确项是唯一同时包含 self、others 与 relationship 方向的选项。

Why is it possible to listen to another person's experience without judgment?

    • A People in the attention economy are naturally good listeners.
    • B Other people's emotions are less complex than one's own.
    • C The non-reactive observation used for one's own experience can also be applied to another person's experience.
    • D Judgment is necessary for understanding another person.
    • E Mobile phones make face-to-face listening easier.
    • F People can accurately predict another person's reactions.

What does giving the gift of mindfulness to another person require?

    • A Giving immediate advice based on one's own similar experiences.
    • B Checking social media while the other person is speaking.
    • C Judging whether the speaker's choices are good or bad.
    • D Being fully present, listening without judgment, and resisting the urge to make the interaction about oneself.
    • E Sharing the listener's feelings more than hearing the speaker's experiences.
    • F Avoiding all personal contact to remain emotionally detached.

Why is the gift of mindful attention described as precious in a distracted world?

    • A Because it can be sold for a high price in the attention economy.
    • B Because it allows people to avoid all social interaction.
    • C Because corporations need it to target consumers more effectively.
    • D Because it makes people indifferent to old memories and future events.
    • E Because undivided, compassionate attention is especially valuable when distraction is widespread.
    • F Because it guarantees healing from chronic illness.

Defining clause 直接告诉我们 commodity 是 something that can be bought and sold,而 attention economy 这个 broader context 说明 commodity 是 economic system 中的 tradable units。

结合 mindfulness 的 overall theme(being fully present),relish 应该是「充分享受、品味、珍惜」的意思,强调一种 conscious, appreciative engagement with life's special moments。

Specific descriptions 告诉我们 compassion 涉及 non-judgmental understanding, morphological analysis 显示 com- 表示「共同、一起」,而 value argument 说明 compassion 是 deep, rare quality of caring。

信号词 according to as stated by research shows studies indicate experts suggest scholars argue as described in evidence from data reveals

比如讨论 emotional intelligence 时,你可以说 'Psychologist Daniel Goleman first popularized the concept in his groundbreaking work'。 According to [authority/source], [concept] is defined as [key insight], which suggests [implication for your argument].'

信号词 for example for instance such as take... for example consider illustrate demonstrate case in point to illustrate

Can I show rather than tell?' 比如讨论 technology addiction 时,可以说 'Consider how Netflix's autoplay feature exemplifies designed compulsion'。 [Authority/Person] argues that [concept], which is evident in [specific example/phenomenon]. This demonstrates [connection to main argument].'

    P5

第5段 展现了清晰的 causal chain:mobile devices 和 social media 导致 perpetual diversion,其 result 是我们的 ability to focus 被 stolen。

信号词 result consequence therefore thus hence leads to causes because due to as a result consequently this means that

仿写: 构建 causal argument 时,要清晰地 map out the chain:What is the cause? What is the effect? Are there intermediate steps? The proliferation of social media leads to constant comparison, which results in decreased self-esteem, thereby contributing to mental health issues.' [Cause/Factor] leads to/results in/contributes to [Effect], which in turn [further consequence]. This causal relationship demonstrates [implication for thesis].'

这种 juxtaposition 不仅 highlights mindfulness 的被 underexplored dimension,还通过对比 distracted world 与 fully present state 来强调 mindful listening 的 precious value。

信号词 but however whereas while in contrast on the other hand conversely unlike rather than instead of yet

While traditional education focuses on memorization and standardized tests, progressive approaches prioritize critical thinking and personalized learning.' While [Element A] focuses on/emphasizes [characteristic], [Element B] offers/prioritizes [contrasting characteristic]. This contrast reveals [insight about your argument].'

通过引入 'price' 和 'worthless' vs. 'precious' 的对比,作者用 economic metaphor 来 challenge conventional notions of value,暗示真正的 worth 不在于 monetary cost 而在于 attention 和 presence。

信号词 is like as if metaphorically in a sense can be seen as resembles parallels mirrors

Personal data is the currency of the digital age, but unlike money, once spent, it can never be retrieved.' [Abstract concept] is [concrete metaphorical term], which [exploration of metaphor's implications]. This reveals [deeper insight about your argument].'

    P8

第8段 使用了 parallel structure 来强调 mindful listening 的 concrete actions:'putting away your phone, turning off social media, and setting aside other common distractions'。

    信号词 and or not only...but also both...and either...or neither...nor first...second...third

通常 three items 最有效 (rule of three)。 To succeed in the digital age requires learning constantly, adapting quickly, and collaborating effectively.'仿写模版:'[Action/Concept] means [verb + ing phrase 1], [verb + ing phrase 2], and [verb + ing phrase 3]. This [accumulative effect/comprehensive view] demonstrates [implication].'

模糊限制语 a number of several various some many numerous a range of

    P2
based on an insight first described in ancient Buddhist texts

时间对比类 first described in ancient Buddhist texts ancient first described in originally traditional long-standing age-old

    P3
It does not make us cold or indifferent but more fully present

否定澄清类 does not not never neither nor it is not that contrary to belief

    P4
there has been a profound transformation in human attention

这暗示 hints 当代社会存在严重问题 serious problem,为后文批判attention economy 铺垫 pave the way。

    P4
human attention has been transformed into a commodity that big corporations buy and sell

被动语态暗示 has been transformed into has been turned into has been converted into has been reduced to has been commodified has been exploited has been manipulated

用被动语态"has been transformed into a commodity"而不说"we have allowed our attention to become",言外之意 subtext 是普通人是这个过程中的victims 而非willing participants。 这种表达方式 phrasing 激发读者的警觉 vigilance 和反抗意识 resistance,为后文倡导mindfulness as resistance 奠定情感基础 emotional foundation,同时避免blame individuals for their distraction。

    P5
it can feel as though our ability to focus, and be fully present, has been stolen

主观感受委婉类 can feel as though it seems that appears to be gives the impression one might sense there is a feeling that as if

用"can feel as though...has been stolen"而非直接说"has been stolen",言外之意 implication 是作者在acknowledging 这是广泛的共同感受 shared feeling,从而validate 读者自身的experience。 这种修辞 rhetoric 让读者感到被理解 understood,更容易接受后续的solution(mindfulness),因为问题已经被framed as 可以relate to 的common struggle。

    P6
Most mindfulness research focuses on the individual benefits of the practice, but some scholars assert that we can not only practice mindfulness for ourselves but also practice it for others

转折引入新观点类 but some scholars assert but however yet nevertheless on the other hand some scholars assert

用"Most mindfulness research focuses on...but some scholars assert"的转折结构 contrastive structure,言外之意 subtext 是现有研究存在视角单一 narrow perspective 的问题,过度关注individual benefits 而忽视relational dimension。这为文章引入new argument(mindfulness for relationships)提供正当性 justification,暗示作者接下来要填补 fill 这个research gap。

    P7
The sad truth is that living in the attention economy, most of us have become bad listeners

The sad truth sad truth unfortunate reality harsh fact regrettable situation troubling reality uncomfortable truth

Most of us have become bad listeners",言外之意 implication 是作者在acknowledging 这是一个painful yet undeniable 的现实 reality,同时用"sad"这个emotion 表达empathy 而非judgment。包含"most of us"暗示作者也是其中一员 part of the problem,建立与读者的共同立场 common ground,使subsequent advice(mindful listening)显得更像friendly guidance 而非condescending lecture。

    P8
To give this gift means putting away your phone, turning off social media, and setting aside other common distractions. It means practicing being fully present in another person's presence and listening to them with complete attention without judgment, while resisting the urge to make the interaction about you.

定义重复强化类 means it means this requires this involves this entails it demands necessitates

连续使用两个"means"句加上多个具体行动 specific actions(putting away phone, turning off social media, setting aside distractions, being fully present, listening without judgment, resisting urge),言外之意 subtext 是mindful listening 绝非simple act,而是requires significant conscious effort 和multiple sacrifices。

    P9
If we judge the value of gifts based on their price, this gift may seem worthless, but in a distracted world, it is a precious one.

If we judge...may seem...but if...may seem...but although...appears...actually while...might look...in reality on the surface...seems...however it may appear...but superficially...yet

用"If we judge the value of gifts based on their price"引入常见评价体系 common evaluative framework,再用"may seem worthless, but...precious"形成stark contrast,言外之意 implication 是当代社会over-relies on monetary metrics 来评估价值 assess value,导致真正重要的东西 truly important things 被undervalued。这个让步转折 concession-contrast 揭示文章的deeper critique:attention economy 不仅偷走了our attention,还扭曲了our value system。

第1段 直接 states 'Mindfulness has been shown to have meaningful health benefits',这是一个带有 value judgment 的 claim,不是客观的 factual description。说明文会 explain 'what mindfulness is',新闻报道会 report 'a recent study found',但议论文直接 assert 一个 viewpoint。

    第2段 到 第3段 在 explain the basis of mindfulness practice,但重点是 argue 它如何 helps us,第4段 到 第5段 则 identifies a problem (attention economy) 并 argues mindfulness 作为 solution。

第6段 到 第8段 明确提出 'we can practice mindfulness for others' 并详细 describes 'how to give the gift of mindfulness',使用大量 imperative suggestions 如 'putting away your phone', 'listening with complete attention'。第9段 的 concluding statement 'it is a precious gift' 是对整个 argument 的 evaluative summary。

整篇文章从 第1段 的 'mindfulness has benefits' (thesis),到 第2段-5 的 'here's why and how it works in modern context' (reasoning with problem-solution),到 第6段-9 的 'practice it for others, here's how' (extended application with call to action),形成完整的 argumentative arc。每个 section 都在 building a case for mindfulness practice,不是 objectively describing 它或 neutrally reporting 相关 events。
