Part III Section C (2)
Directions: There  are 2 passages  in this section. Each passage  is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them  there  are four choices marked A),B),C)and D).You should decide  on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.
Passage Two
Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.
P1Women have historically been paid less. But in the US in the 1980s, they began to catch up—fast. During that decade, the gender pay gap closed by about one percentage point a year. Had that trend continued, the gender wage gap would have been closed by 2017.

P2But the trend didn't continue, and the gap remains yawning.

P3According to a new study from academics at Harvard, the stagnation can be put down, perhaps counterintuitively, to the introduction of state and federal family leave policies.

P4The academics argue that during the 1990s, as governments began to introduce leave policies, it was mainly women who took advantage of them. Though the leave policies might have helped those women to stay in the workplace—instead of dropping out to have families—those who returned saw their wages had increased at lower rates than the men.

P5After family leave was introduced in the US, in fact, the rate of gender wage convergence fell to just 0.03 percentage points per year, and has remained there ever since.

P6Those monitoring the process towards salary equity at work have long watched as progress slowed in many countries around the world. In fact, that progress began to reverse during the pandemic(大流行病).

P7The gender pay gap is one of the most outstanding examples of that lack of parity(平等), and still exists just about everywhere. The motherhood penalty has become a shorthand for describing why: In many places, especially rich countries, women earn the same as men until they reach their childbearing years. Women who have children begin to see their salaries slip behind their male counterparts.

P8Part of this is because women take on more of the unpaid labor at home, which can eat into time available for work and energy for career advancement. But it's also because mothers are passed over for raises and promotion, and because time out of the workplace sets women back, even if that time is taken voluntarily, and supported by company or government policy.

P9What would have happened if leave policies hadn't been introduced? The study doesn't go into that question, other than to say that if the 1980s trend continued, we would have been at parity by now.

P10It's possible, however, that the journey towards wage parity would have stalled either way. If women's gains in the 1980s were made through the erasure of things like bias, once those less uncontrollable problems had been addressed, there would still have been an issue with women—who are the ones to bear children and take care of them in the early weeks because of biological factors like the ability to breastfeed, forcing them to take breaks, whether or not those breaks were mandated.

51.
What do we learn about the gender pay gap in the US during the 1980s?
A)It was being slowly closed.
B)It was shrinking rapidly.
C)It started to yawn.
D)It remained substantial.

B(细节题)

What do we learn about the gender pay gap in the US during the 1980s

What do we learn about the gender pay gap,in the US during the 1980s 是修饰 "the gender pay gap" 的时间地点状语,句子结构简单、无陷阱。

P1

But in the US in the 1980s, they began to catch up—fast. During that decade, the gender pay gap closed by about one percentage point a year.

It was being slowly closed

    • they began to catch up—fastshrinking rapidly
    • closed by about one percentage point a yearrapidly

It remained substantial 描述的是 Women have historically been paid less

52.
What happened with the introduction of state and federal family leave policies?
A)The process towards salary equity at work began to reverse.
B)The rate of gender wage convergence started to fall noticeably.
C)The trend of women returning to work after childbirth started.
D)The narrowing of the gender pay gap attracted more attention.

B(细节题)

What happened with the introduction of...

with the introduction of state and federal family leave policies

P5

After family leave was introduced in the US, in fact, the rate of gender wage convergence fell to just 0.03 percentage points per year, and has remained there ever since.

The process towards salary equity at work began to reverse 借用 that progress began to reverse during the pandemic,但原文的"反转"发生在大流行期间,不是家庭休假政策引入之后。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • the rate of gender wage convergence fell to just 0.03 percentage points per yearThe rate of gender wage convergence started to fall noticeably

The trend of women returning to work after childbirth started 借用 helped those women to stay in the workplace—instead of dropping out to have families,但原文只说政策让一些女性留下来,没有说"产后返岗成为新趋势",且这不是题干"introduction后发生了什么"的核心结果。

The narrowing of the gender pay gap attracted more attention

53.
What partly accounts for the slip in women's salaries?
A)The insufficient motivation women generally have for career advancement.
B)The opportunities numerous women give up for pay raise and promotion.
C)The huge amounts of time and energy women spend taking care of the family.
D)The lack of policy support from government and business corporations.

C(细节题)

What partly accounts for the slip in women's salaries

What partly accounts for the slip,in women's salaries

P8

Part of this is because women take on more of the unpaid labor at home, which can eat into time available for work and energy for career advancement.

The insufficient motivation women generally have for career advancement

The opportunities numerous women give up for pay raise and promotion 暗示女性"主动放弃"涨薪机会,但原文 mothers are passed over for raises and promotion 是被动语态——她们是"被跳过",不是"主动放弃"。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • women take on more of the unpaid labor at hometaking care of the family
    • eat into time available for work and energy for career advancementThe huge amounts of time and energy

The lack of policy support from government and business corporations

54.
What does the new study say about wage parity?
A)It would have stalled if those controllable problems had not been addressed.
B)It would have halted if company and government had not worked together.
C)It would have been achieved with the complete erasure of gender biases.
D)It would have been attained with the continuation of the 1980s trend.

D(细节题)

What does the new study say about wage parity

P9

The study doesn't go into that question, other than to say that if the 1980s trend continued, we would have been at parity by now.

It would have stalled if those controllable problems had not been addressed 借用 once those less uncontrollable problems had been addressed 制造对应,但原文是"问题已被解决之后还会有别的问题",选项却说"如果没解决就会停滞",方向颠倒。

It would have halted if company and government had not worked together 把"公司和政府合作"作为条件,但原文从未提及二者协同与否,只是说休假可由 company or government policy 支持。

It would have been achieved with the complete erasure of gender biases 借用 through the erasure of things like bias,但原文用了 things like bias 这种举例口吻,且只是 if 假设下的推测,并未说"完全消除偏见就能实现"。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • if the 1980s trend continuedwith the continuation of the 1980s trend
    • we would have been at parity by nowIt would have been attained

D 把虚拟条件 if the 1980s trend continued 和结果 would have been at parity 一一对应,无缺漏无外加,是定位句最严格的同义改写。

55.
What prevents women from achieving parity with men in the final analysis?
A)Ignoring biases against women in the workplace.
B)Giving birth to children and taking care of them.
C)Failing to mandate breaks for childbirth and care.
D)Lacking resources to address biological problems.

B(细节题)

What prevents women from achieving parity with men in the final analysis

prevents women from achieving parity with men 是 prevent sb from doing sth 结构;in the final analysis 是状语,意为"归根结底",需要识别这个固定搭配才能锁定原文末段。

P10

If women's gains in the 1980s were made through the erasure of things like bias, once those less uncontrollable problems had been addressed, there would still have been an issue with women—who are the ones to bear children and take care of them in the early weeks because of biological factors like the ability to breastfeed, forcing them to take breaks, whether or not those breaks were mandated.

Ignoring biases against women in the workplace 把原因归为"忽视偏见",但原文 through the erasure of things like bias 恰是说偏见已被消除,且作者强调即便消除之后仍有问题——并非"忽视"导致。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • who are the ones to bear children and take care of them in the early weeksGiving birth to children and taking care of them

Failing to mandate breaks for childbirth and care 把"不强制规定休假"作为最终原因,但原文 whether or not those breaks were mandated 明确指出强制与否都没用,最终原因不是强制不强制。

Lacking resources to address biological problems 借用 biological factors like the ability to breastfeed,但原文从未说"缺乏资源去解决生物学问题",且作者立场是生物学因素本身就难以绕开,不是资源问题。
