Text 2
P1An old saying has it that half of all advertising budgets are wasted – the trouble is, no one knows which half. In the internet age, at least in theory, this fraction can be much reduced. By watching what people search for, click on and say online, companies can aim "behavioural" ads at those most likely to buy.

P2In the past couple of weeks a quarrel has illustrated the value to advertisers of such fine-grained information: Should advertisers assume that people are happy to be tracked and sent behavioural ads? Or should they have explicit permission?

P3In December 2010 America's Federal Trade Commission (FTC) proposed adding a "do not track" (DNT) option to internet browsers, so that users could tell advertisers that they did not want to be followed. Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Apple's Safari both offer DNT; Google's Chrome is due to do so this year. In February the FTC and the Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) agreed that the industry would get cracking on responding to DNT requests.

P4On May 31st Microsoft set off the row. It said that Internet Explorer 10, the version due to appear with Windows 8, would have DNT as a default.

P5Advertisers are horrified. Human nature being what it is, most people stick with default settings. Few switch DNT on now, but if tracking is off it will stay off. Bob Liodice, the chief executive of the Association of National Advertisers, says consumers will be worse off if the industry cannot collect information about their preferences. People will not get fewer ads, he says. "They'll get less meaningful, less targeted ads."

P6It is not yet clear how advertisers will respond. Getting a DNT signal does not oblige anyone to stop tracking, although some companies have promised to do so. Unable to tell whether someone really objects to behavioural ads or whether they are sticking with Microsoft's default, some may ignore a DNT signal and press on anyway.

P7Also unclear is why Microsoft has gone it alone. After all, it has an ad business too, which it says will comply with DNT requests, though it is still working out how. If it is trying to upset Google, which relies almost wholly on advertising, it has chosen an indirect method: there is no guarantee that DNT by default will become the norm. DNT does not seem an obviously huge selling point for windows 8 – though the firm has compared some of its other products favourably with Google's on that count before. Brendon Lynch, Microsoft's chief privacy officer, blogged: "We believe consumers should have more control." Could it really be that simple?

26.
It is suggested in Paragraph 1 that "behavioural" ads help advertisers to____
[ A ]provide better online services.
[ B ]ease competition among themselves.
[ C ]avoid complaints from consumers.
[ D ]lower their operational costs.

D(推断题)

It is suggested in Paragraph

句子主干是 behavioural ads help advertisers to____,help sb. to do 结构里 to 后是动词原形,四个选项各填一个动词短语;前置状语 It is suggested in Paragraph 1 用 it 作形式主语,被动语态把 suggested 的主体(作者)藏起来,使语气更客观——无陷阱。

P1

By watching what people search for, click on and say online, companies can aim "behavioural" ads at those most likely to buy.

ease competition among themselves

    avoid complaints from consumers

    • half of all advertising budgets are wastedlower their operational costs
    • this fraction can be much reducedlower their operational costs

27.
"the industry" (Line 5, Para. 3) refers to ____
[ A ]internet browser developers.
[ B ]digital information analysts.
[ C ]e-commerce conductors.
[ D ]online advertisers.

D(词义句意题)

"the industry" (Line 5, Para.

P3

In February the FTC and the Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) agreed that the industry would get cracking on responding to DNT requests.

    • the Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA)online advertisers
    • responding to DNT requestsonline advertisers

28.
Bob Liodice holds that setting DNT as a default____
[ A ]may cut the number of junk ads.
[ B ]fails to affect the ad industry.
[ C ]will not benefit consumers.
[ D ]goes against human nature.

C(细节题)

Bob Liodice holds that setting DNT as a default____,that 引导宾语从句,从句主语是动名词短语 setting DNT as a default,谓语缺失由四个选项补齐——基础考生留意 setting 在此是动名词作主语,不是现在分词。

P5

Bob Liodice, the chief executive of the Association of National Advertisers, says consumers will be worse off if the industry cannot collect information about their preferences. People will not get fewer ads, he says. "They'll get less meaningful, less targeted ads."

may cut the number of junk ads People will not get fewer ads

fails to affect the ad industry 说默认 DNT 影响不到广告业,而 P5 开篇就是 Advertisers are horrified,又强调 if the industry cannot collect information about their preferences——影响显然存在且巨大。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • consumers will be worse offwill not benefit consumers
    • They'll get less meaningful, less targeted adswill not benefit consumers

Human nature being what it is, most people stick with default settings

29.
Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 6?
[ A ]Advertisers are willing to implement DNT.
[ B ]DNT may not serve its intended purpose.
[ C ]DNT is losing its popularity among consumers.
[ D ]Advertisers are obliged to offer behavioural ads.

B(细节题)

Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 6

Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 6? 是标准的疑问句,主语 Which of the following,系动词 is,表语 true,状语 according to Paragraph 6 限定信息来源——无陷阱。

P6

Getting a DNT signal does not oblige anyone to stop tracking, although some companies have promised to do so. Unable to tell whether someone really objects to behavioural ads or whether they are sticking with Microsoft's default, some may ignore a DNT signal and press on anyway.

Advertisers are willing to implement DNT 说广告商乐意执行 DNT,但 Getting a DNT signal does not oblige anyone to stop tracking 和 some may ignore a DNT signal 都暗示广告商抗拒执行——选项与原文方向相反。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • Getting a DNT signal does not oblige anyone to stop trackingDNT may not serve its intended purpose
    • some may ignore a DNT signal and press on anywayDNT may not serve its intended purpose

DNT may not serve its intended purpose 字面与之完全对接,锁定 B。

DNT is losing its popularity among consumers

Advertisers are obliged to offer behavioural ads 说广告商「有义务提供行为广告」,与原文 does not oblige anyone to stop tracking 形成戏剧化反转——原文是「无义务停止追踪」,选项是「有义务提供广告」,oblige 的方向被偷换。

30.
The author's attitude towards what Brendon Lynch said in his blog is one of____
[ A ]indulgence.
[ B ]understanding.
[ C ]appreciation.
[ D ]skepticism.

  • A) 纵容。
  • B) 理解。
  • C) 赞赏。
  • D) 怀疑。
D(态度题)

The author's attitude towards what Brendon Lynch said in his blog is one of____,主语 The author's attitude,介词短语 towards 后跟宾语从句 what Brendon Lynch said in his blog,is one of 是「是…

    • Could it really be that simple?skepticism
    • it has an ad business tooskepticism

    预判作者态度为负 / 怀疑,四个选项中 indulgence(纵容)、understanding(理解)、appreciation(赞赏)均为正向或中性,唯 skepticism 为怀疑,锁定 D。
