Section II Part A (3)
Directions:
Read the following four texts. Answer the questions after each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on the ANSWER SHEET. (40 points)
Text 3
P1Up until a few decades ago, our visions of the future were largely – though by no means uniformly – glowingly positive. Science and technology would cure all the ills of humanity, leading to lives of fulfilment and opportunity for all.

P2Now utopia has grown unfashionable, as we have gained a deeper appreciation of the range of threats facing us, from asteroid strike to epidemic flu and to climate change. You might even be tempted to assume that humanity has little future to look forward to.

P3But such gloominess is misplaced. The fossil record shows that many species have endured for millions of years – so why shouldn't we? Take a broader look at our species' place in the universe, and it becomes clear that we have an excellent chance of surviving for tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of years. Look up Homo sapiens in the "Red List" of threatened species of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and you will read: "Listed as Least Concern as the species is very widely distributed, adaptable, currently increasing, and there are no major threats resulting in an overall population decline."

P4So what does our deep future hold? A growing number of researchers and organisations are now thinking seriously about that question. For example, the Long Now Foundation has as its flagship project a mechanical clock that is designed to still be marking time thousands of years hence.

P5Perhaps willfully, it may be easier to think about such lengthy timescales than about the more immediate future. The potential evolution of today's technology, and its social consequences, is dazzlingly complicated, and it's perhaps best left to science fiction writers and futurologists to explore the many possibilities we can envisage. That's one reason why we have launched Arc, a new publication dedicated to the near future.

P6But take a longer view and there is a surprising amount that we can say with considerable assurance. As so often, the past holds the key to the future: we have now identified enough of the long-term patterns shaping the history of the planet, and our species, to make evidence-based forecasts about the situations in which our descendants will find themselves.

P7This long perspective makes the pessimistic view of our prospects seem more likely to be a passing fad. To be sure, the future is not all rosy. But we are now knowledgeable enough to reduce many of the risks that threatened the existence of earlier humans, and to improve the lot of those to come.

31.
Our vision of the future used to be inspired by____
[ A ]our desire for lives of fulfillment.
[ B ]our faith in science and technology.
[ C ]our awareness of potential risks.
[ D ]our belief in equal opportunity.

B(细节题)

Our vision of the future used to be inspired by

Our vision of the future used to be inspired by Our vision of the future,谓语 used to be inspired(过去常被启发),by 后接答案——也就是过去激发愿景的来源;时态明确指向过去。

P1

Up until a few decades ago, our visions of the future were largely – though by no means uniformly – glowingly positive. Science and technology would cure all the ills of humanity, leading to lives of fulfilment and opportunity for all.

our desire for lives of fulfillment 把原文的“结果”挪到“原因”位置:原文 leading to lives of fulfilment and opportunity for all 中的 lives of fulfilment 是科技带来的结果,并非激发愿景的原因。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • Science and technology would cure all the ills of humanityour faith in science and technology

our awareness of potential risks 对应的是 we have gained a deeper appreciation of the range of threats facing us,属于“如今”的视角;题干 used to 限定过去,与本选项时态完全相反。

32.
The IUCN's "Red List" suggests that human beings are____
[ A ]a sustained species.
[ B ]the world's dominant power.
[ C ]a threat to the environment.
[ D ]a misplaced race.

A(细节题)

The IUCN's "Red List" suggests that human beings are

The IUCN's "Red List" suggests that human beings are 主干是 The IUCN's Red List suggests,宾语从句 that human beings are ____,待补全位置是表语,答案应是一个名词短语用于描述人类。

P3

Look up Homo sapiens in the "Red List" of threatened species of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and you will read: "Listed as Least Concern as the species is very widely distributed, adaptable, currently increasing, and there are no major threats resulting in an overall population decline."

  • A)✓ 正确
    • Listed as Least Concern as the species is very widely distributed, adaptable, currently increasing, and there are no major threats resulting in an overall population declinea sustained species

    the world's dominant power

But such gloominess is misplaced

33.
Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 5?
[ A ]The interest in science fiction is on the rise.
[ B ]Arc helps limit the scope of futurological studies.
[ C ]Technology offers solutions to social problems.
[ D ]Our immediate future is hard to conceive.

D(细节题)

Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 5?

Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 5? 是 Which 引导的特殊疑问句,true according to Paragraph 5 等于 which is consistent with Paragraph 5,无陷阱。

P5

Perhaps willfully, it may be easier to think about such lengthy timescales than about the more immediate future. The potential evolution of today's technology, and its social consequences, is dazzlingly complicated, and it's perhaps best left to science fiction writers and futurologists to explore the many possibilities we can envisage. That's one reason why we have launched Arc, a new publication dedicated to the near future.

The interest in science fiction is on the rise 谈“科幻兴趣上升”,原文仅提及 science fiction writers and futurologists 是合适的探讨者,根本未谈大众对科幻兴趣的变化趋势。

Arc helps limit the scope of futurological studies 说 Arc 限缩研究范围,与原文 a new publication dedicated to the near future 表达的“致力于近未来研究”完全相反——dedicated to 是聚焦展开,并非 limit the scope(限缩)。

原文 its social consequences, is dazzlingly complicated 说的是“今日科技带来的社会后果非常复杂”,并未主张“科技为社会问题提供解决方案”;Technology offers solutions to social problems 把“产生复杂后果”反向偷换为“解决问题”。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • it may be easier to think about such lengthy timescales than about the more immediate futureOur immediate future is hard to conceive
    • The potential evolution of today's technology, and its social consequences, is dazzlingly complicatedOur immediate future is hard to conceive

Our immediate future is hard to conceive

34.
To ensure the future of mankind, it is crucial to____
[ A ]adopt an optimistic view of the world.
[ B ]draw on our experience from the past.
[ C ]explore our planet's abundant resources.
[ D ]curb our ambition to reshape history.

B(细节题)

To ensure the future of mankind, it is crucial to

To ensure the future of mankind, it is crucial to 由不定式目的状语 To ensure...

P6

As so often, the past holds the key to the future: we have now identified enough of the long-term patterns shaping the history of the planet, and our species, to make evidence-based forecasts about the situations in which our descendants will find themselves.

adopt an optimistic view of the world 是一种“心态”,原文虽整体乐观,但作者强调的“crucial 之事”是 the past holds the key to the future 的方法论,不是号召大家保持乐观心态;题干问的是 crucial to 的关键做法,而非情绪选择。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • the past holds the key to the futuredraw on our experience from the past
    • we have now identified enough of the long-term patterns shaping the history of the planet, and our species, to make evidence-based forecastsdraw on our experience from the past

预判“借鉴过去”,draw on our experience from the past 把原文 the past holds the key to the future 的比喻还原为可执行动作,立场与方法两端都对得上。

35.
Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
[ A ]The Ever-bright Prospects of Mankind.
[ B ]Science, Technology and Humanity.
[ C ]Evolution of the Human Species.
[ D ]Uncertainty about Our Future.

A(主旨题)

Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

  • A)✓ 正确
    • But such gloominess is misplacedThe Ever-bright Prospects of Mankind
    • This long perspective makes the pessimistic view of our prospects seem more likely to be a passing fadThe Ever-bright Prospects of Mankind
    • we have an excellent chance of surviving for tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of yearsThe Ever-bright Prospects of Mankind

The Ever-bright Prospects of Mankind

Evolution of the Human Species

Uncertainty about Our Future But such gloominess is misplaced 和 a passing fad 反驳的旧观点;用作标题等于把全文立场反过来。
