Joy: A Subject Schools Lack

When Jonathan Swift proposed, in 1729, that the people of Ireland eat their children, he insisted it would solve three problems at once: feed the hungry masses, reduce the population during a severe depression, and stimulate the restaurant business. Even as a satire(讽刺), it seems disgusting and shocking in America with its child-centered culture. But actually, the country is closer to his proposal than you might think.

If you spend much time with educators and policy makers, you'll hear a lot of the following words: "standards," "results," "skills," "self-control," "accountability," and so on. I have visited some of the newer supposedly "effective" schools, where children shout slogans in order to learn self-control or must stand behind their desk when they can't sit still.

A look at what goes on in most classrooms these days makes it abundantly clear that when people think about education, they are not thinking about what it feels like to be a child, or what makes childhood an important and valuable stage of life in its own right.

I'm a mother of three, a teacher, and a developmental psychologist. So I've watched a lot of children—talking, playing, arguing, eating, studying, and being young. Here's what I've come to understand. The thing that sets children apart from adults is not their ignorance, nor their lack of skills. It's their enormous capacity for joy. Think of a 3-year-old lost in the pleasures of finding out what he can and cannot sink in the bathtub, a 5-year-old beside herself with the thrill of putting together strings of nonsensical words with her best friends, or an 11-year-old completely absorbed in a fascinating comic strip. A child's ability to become deeply absorbed in something, and derive intense pleasure from that absorption, is something adults spend the rest of their lives trying to return to.

A friend told me the following story. One day, when he went to get his 7-year-old son from soccer practice, his kid greeted him with a downcast face and a sad voice. The coach had criticized him for not focusing on his soccer drills. The little boy walked out of the school with his head and shoulders hanging down. He seemed wrapped in sadness. But just before he reached the car door, he suddenly stopped, crouching(蹲伏) down to peer at something on the sidewalk. His face went down lower and lower, and then, with complete joy he called out, "Dad. Come here. This is the strangest bug I've ever seen. It has, like, a million legs. Look at this. It's amazing." He looked up at his father, his features overflowing with energy and delight. "Can't we stay here for just a minute? I want to find out what he does with all those legs. This is the coolest ever."

The traditional view of such moments is that they constitute a charming but irrelevant byproduct of youth—something to be pushed aside to make room for more important qualities, like perseverance(坚持不懈), obligation, and practicality. Yet moments like this one are just the kind of intense absorption and pleasure adults spend the rest of their lives seeking. Human lives are governed by the desire to experience joy. Becoming educated should not require giving up joy but rather lead to finding joy in new kinds of things: reading novels instead of playing with small figures, conducting experiments instead of sinking cups in the bathtub, and debating serious issues rather than stringing together nonsense words, for example. In some cases, schools should help children find new, more grown-up ways of doing the same things that are constant sources of joy: making art, making friends, making decisions.

Building on a child's ability to feel joy, rather than pushing it aside, wouldn't be that hard. It would just require a shift in the education world's mindset(思维模式). Instead of trying to get children to work hard, why not focus on getting them to take pleasure in meaningful, productive activity, like making things, working with others, exploring ideas, and solving problems? These focuses are not so different from the things in which they delight.

Before you brush this argument aside as rubbish, or think of joy as an unaffordable luxury in a nation where there is awful poverty, low academic achievement, and high dropout rates, think again. The more horrible the school circumstances, the more important pleasure is to achieving any educational success.

Many of the assignments and rules teachers come up with, often because they are pressured by their administrators, treat pleasure and joy as the enemies of competence and responsibility. The assumption is that children shouldn't chat in the classroom because it hinders hard work; instead, they should learn to delay gratification(快乐) so that they can pursue abstract goals, like going to college.

Not only is this a boring and awful way to treat children, it makes no sense educationally. Decades of research have shown that in order to acquire skills and real knowledge in school, kids need to want to learn. You can force a child to stay in his or her seat, fill out a worksheet, or practice division. But you can't force the child to think carefully, enjoy books, digest complex information, or develop a taste for learning. To make that happen, you have to help the child find pleasure in learning—to see school as a source of joy.

Adults tend to talk about learning as if it were medicine: unpleasant, but necessary and good for you. Why not instead think of learning as if it were food—something so valuable to humans that they have evolved to experience it as a pleasure?

Joy should not be trained out of children or left for after-school programs. The more difficult a child's life circumstances, the more important it is for that child to find joy in his or her classroom. "Pleasure" is not a dirty word. And it doesn't run counter to the goals of public education. It is, in fact, the precondition.

Jonathan Swift

What does the author suggest by mentioning Jonathan Swift's proposal?

    • A The restaurant business in America needs to be stimulated during a depression.
    • B Ireland's population problems should be solved by extreme measures.
    • C The current treatment of children in America is unexpectedly similar to the satire.
    • D Americans have successfully built a truly child-centered culture.
    • E Jonathan Swift was a famous educator who focused on children's needs.
    • F Modern schools are focusing more on satire than on real skills.

正确项用 unexpectedly similar 改写 closer than you might think,并把 country 所指的美国现实具体化为 current treatment of children,保留了作者建立的 comparison。

段末转折比对 利用 Jonathan Swift 直接定位 第1段 后,不必逐句翻译整个引例,只需抓住段末转折及 closer than you might think 的 comparison structure。

What does the author observe in some of the newer 'effective' schools?

    • A Teachers focus on developing children's natural curiosity.
    • B Educators are abandoning the concept of 'accountability'.
    • C Children are encouraged to sit still by offering them rewards.
    • D Students are forced to follow rigid rules to practice self-control.
    • E The schools have high standards for academic results.
    • F Policy makers are visiting these schools to learn skills.

    原文中的 must stand 明确体现 compulsion,而 shout slogans in order to learn self-control 说明这些规定的目标。

What do people fail to consider when they think about education?

    • A How classrooms can give children more academic assignments.
    • B Why childhood matters only as preparation for adulthood.
    • C Whether children possess enough skills to meet adult standards.
    • D How policy makers can make schools more accountable.
    • E What it feels like to be a child and why childhood is valuable in its own right.
    • F Why children should spend less time playing in classrooms.

原文明确并列 what it feels like to be a child 和 what makes childhood important and valuable in its own right。

  4. 第 4 段 定位词 sets children apart from adults

According to the author, what fundamentally sets children apart from adults?

    • A Their ignorance of the adult world.
    • B Their lack of practical skills.
    • C Their preference for comic strips over novels.
    • D Their inability to remain absorbed in one activity.
    • E Their dependence on adults for entertainment.
    • F Their enormous capacity for joy.

原文明确说使 children 区别于 adults 的不是 ignorance,也不是 lack of skills,而是 their enormous capacity for joy。

What happened just before the boy reached the car door?

    • A He stopped and crouched down to examine a strange bug on the sidewalk.
    • B His father criticized him for ignoring his soccer drills.
    • C He entered the car without noticing anything around him.
    • D He continued walking with his head and shoulders hanging down.
    • E He asked his father to take him away from the school immediately.
    • F He returned to the field to practice his soccer drills.

原文写男孩 suddenly stopped,随后 crouching down to peer at something,并认出这是 strangest bug。正确项把 peer at 改写为 examine,同时保留 stopped、crouched down、bug 和 sidewalk 的事件链。

According to the author, what should becoming educated do rather than require giving up joy?

    • A It should push joyful moments aside in favor of practicality.
    • B It should lead children to find joy in new kinds of things.
    • C It should preserve only the activities children enjoyed when they were very young.
    • D It should replace pleasure with perseverance and obligation.
    • E It should delay every source of joy until adulthood.
    • F It should limit joy to activities unrelated to serious learning.

原文明确说 becoming educated 应 lead to finding joy in new kinds of things。正确项补出 children 作为教育对象,并保持 lead、find joy 和 new kinds of things 的核心关系。

正确项应复现 lead to、finding joy 和 new kinds of things 的语义链;主张 replace、delay 或 limit joy 的选项方向相反。

  7. 第 7 段 定位词 get children to work hard

What should educators emphasize instead of simply trying to get children to work hard?

    • A Making children work longer hours under stricter supervision.
    • B Separating enjoyable activities from productive work.
    • C Helping children take pleasure in meaningful, productive activity.
    • D Reducing opportunities for children to explore ideas.
    • E Teaching children that delight is different from solving problems.
    • F Replacing group work with isolated individual practice.

原文建议 focus on getting them to take pleasure in meaningful, productive activity。

替代结构后读 用 get children to work hard 定位 第7段 后,读取 why not focus on 后的单个 gerund structure。

Why should joy not be dismissed in a nation with high dropout rates?

    • A Joy is useful only after poverty and low achievement have been eliminated.
    • B Pleasure is an unaffordable luxury in schools facing serious problems.
    • C Academic success becomes impossible whenever students experience pleasure.
    • D Pleasure becomes even more important to educational success as school circumstances worsen.
    • E High dropout rates show that schools already provide too much joy.
    • F Poor schools should postpone pleasure and focus exclusively on discipline.

The more horrible the school circumstances, the more important pleasure is to achieving any educational success。

  9. 第 9 段 定位词 chatting in the classroom

What assumption is used to justify stopping children from chatting in the classroom?

    • A Chatting directly improves children's competence and responsibility.
    • B Children can reach abstract goals through immediate gratification.
    • C Administrators pressure teachers to encourage more classroom conversation.
    • D Hard work prevents students from going to college.
    • E Chatting hinders hard work, while delaying gratification helps children pursue abstract goals.
    • F Classroom rules are designed mainly to increase children's pleasure.

原文说 children shouldn't chat because it hinders hard work,并主张他们应 learn to delay gratification so that they can pursue abstract goals。

因果连接词串联 用 chatting in the classroom 的词形变体定位 第9段 后,只读取 because 与 so that 两个 connector 引出的内容。

  10. 第 10 段 定位词 skills and real knowledge

According to decades of research, what do children need in order to acquire skills and real knowledge in school?

    • A They only need to remain in their seats for long periods.
    • B They must complete worksheets whether or not they understand them.
    • C They need to be forced to develop a taste for learning.
    • D They should avoid enjoyment so that they can think carefully.
    • E They acquire knowledge automatically by practicing division.
    • F They need to want to learn and find pleasure in learning.

原文先明确 kids need to want to learn,后面又说要让深层学习发生,必须 help the child find pleasure in learning。

  11. 第 11 段 定位词 learning as if it were food

Why does the author suggest thinking of learning as if it were food?

    • A Learning is so valuable to humans that they have evolved to experience it as a pleasure.
    • B Learning should be consumed several times a day like a meal.
    • C Learning is unpleasant but necessary and good for people.
    • D Teachers should distribute knowledge in the same way they serve food.
    • E Only physical nourishment can make education enjoyable.
    • F Education should be replaced by lessons about nutrition.

正确项直接对应原文 something so valuable to humans that they have evolved to experience it as a pleasure。

    比喻释义直读 用 learning as if it were food 定位 第11段 后,只读 food 后的解释性成分。

What role does pleasure play in relation to the goals of public education?

    • A It runs counter to the goals of public education.
    • B It is a precondition for achieving those goals.
    • C It should be reserved for after-school programs.
    • D It matters less when a child's life is difficult.
    • E It is an optional reward to be offered after educational success.
    • F It should be trained out of children before they enter the classroom.

It is, in fact, the precondition。

    Swift

通过 educators 和 policy makers 的 vocabulary(standards, results, accountability)以及 classroom observations,作者 demonstrate 当前 education discourse 完全 ignore children's perspective 和 childhood 作为 valuable life stage 的 intrinsic worth

作者以 developmental psychologist 的 authority 提出 core thesis:children 的 defining characteristic 不是 ignorance 或 lack of skills,而是 enormous capacity for joy 和 deep absorption。通过 vivid examples(bathtub, nonsensical words, comic strips)和 personal anecdote(soccer practice story),论证这种 joy 才是 childhood 的 essence 且是 adults 终生 seek to recapture 的 quality

这个 argument 完成关键的 conceptual shift:从 critique existing approach 转向 define what matters。它 establish joy 作为 central concept,并通过 concrete illustrations 和 emotional appeal 让 readers understand 为什么 joy 不是 luxury 而是 fundamental to childhood。这为后续 argue for joy-centered education 提供 theoretical foundation

作者 challenge traditional view 认为 joy 是 charming but irrelevant byproduct。相反,argue 这些 moments of absorption 才是 human lives 的 governing desire。Education 不应 require giving up joy,而应 help children find joy in new, more grown-up things(novels, experiments, debates),这样才能 build on 而非 push aside children's natural capacity

这个 argument 直接 state 文章的 central thesis:joy 不是 obstacle 而是 foundation。它通过 contrast old view 和 new vision, clarify 作者的 educational philosophy,并提供 concrete examples of transformation(从 play 到 meaningful activities),让 abstract principle 变得 actionable

但 counter-argue:越是 horrible school circumstances, pleasure 越 important to educational success。这是 address readers' potential skepticism 的 strategic move

这个 argument 通过 anticipate and refute objections 来 strengthen central thesis。它 acknowledge real-world constraints 但 insist joy 不是 optional,这让 argument 更 credible 和 comprehensive,特别是对 skeptical readers who might dismiss joy as impractical

作者 critique current practices:assignments 和 rules treat pleasure 和 joy 为 enemies of competence。The assumption(children shouldn't chat, must delay gratification)是 fundamentally flawed,因为 decades of research 证明 kids need to want to learn。You can force behavior 但 can't force thinking, enjoying, or developing taste for learning

这个 argument 用 research evidence 和 logical reasoning 来 deepen critique。它不仅 point out what's wrong,还 explain why 当前 approach 是 educationally unsound,从而 strengthen the case for joy-centered alternative

作者用 powerful analogy 收尾:learning 不应被 treat as medicine(unpleasant but necessary),而应像 food(evolved to experience as pleasure)。最后明确 conclude:joy 不应被 trained out 或 left for after-school,especially for children with difficult circumstances。Pleasure 不是 dirty word,它是 public education goals 的 precondition, not counter to them

这个 conclusion 通过 memorable metaphor 和 emphatic statements 来 reinforce central message。它 bring argument full circle,从 introduction 的 critical tone 到这里的 affirmative declaration,完成 argumentative arc。The final statement 'it is the precondition' 给 entire essay 一个 definitive closure

MAIN IDEA ·

这些段落的 topic sentences 承载着 paragraph's main idea,transitional phrases(如 'Yet', 'Instead of')标志着 argument 的 shift。重复出现的 key terms(如 joy, pleasure, absorption)和 evaluative expressions(如 'shouldn't require giving up', 'wouldn't be that hard')直接反映 author's thesis。

议论文中的 anecdotes 和 examples 不是 filler,而是 serve specific argumentative purposes:illustrate abstract concepts、provide emotional appeal、或 demonstrate real-world implications。这个 story 生动展现了 child's ability to shift from sadness to complete absorption in discovery, supporting the claim that joy and deep engagement are children's defining characteristics。

议论文会在 key positions(often after presenting problems or counterarguments)明确 state the thesis。Prescriptive language(should, need to, have to, must)和 emphatic structures(it is...that, in fact, rather than)是 strong indicators of author's core argument。这些 explicit statements 直接回答 'what is the author arguing for?'

通过 synthesize title's claim、body's evidence、和 conclusion's emphasis,读者能 extract the unified thesis。检验方法是:提炼的主旨能否 account for all major parts of the article?是否 capture both the problem and the solution?是否 reflect the author's tone and emphasis?

主旨信号词 should not require giving up P6 capacity for joy P4 precondition P12 Instead of P7 assumptions P9 The more...the more P8

MAIN IDEA ·

Education should cultivate joy rather than suppress it. Children's natural capacity for pleasure and deep absorption in learning is essential for educational success, not an obstacle to overcome. Schools must help students find joy in meaningful activities, as pleasure is the precondition for genuine learning and skill acquisition.

首先,小男孩被criticized后showing a downcast face和sad voice,这establish了negative emotional context。接着,他的head and shoulders hanging down这个concrete physical manifestation reinforced了这种emotional state。 所有evidence都指向同一个conclusion:downcast describes既包含emotional dejection,又包含physical manifestation of looking down的状态。

整合所有evidence:首先,textual opposition between byproduct和important qualities establishes了它的secondary status。

其次,not focusing这个criticism point暗示drills require sustained attention和discipline。最后,小男孩immediately从drills的world转向bug observation的spontaneous joy形成的contrast, reveals that drills代表的是repetitive, structured practice与natural curiosity的对立面。

让我们connect these threads:首先,shouldn't chat because it hinders这个causal structure明确了hinder是explanation for prohibition。 这个opposition framework中,hinder必然表示interfere with或obstruct。所有evidence converge on hinder meaning to create obstacles或prevent progress。

最后,整篇文章的argumentative structure从demonstrating joy's centrality到advocating building education on joy,都support了precondition作为necessary prerequisite的含义。Pleasure不是educational success的byproduct,而是its precondition。

信号词 for example for instance such as take ... as an example consider when a case in point but actually

When ___ happened, it seemed ___. But this example reveals that ___, because ___.

信号词 and or as well as not only ... but also first ... second ... third and so on

In this system, people hear “___,” “___,” “___,” and “___” again and again.

    P4

    在 第4段 中,作者先否定“ignorance”和“lack of skills”是儿童的本质,再用“It’s their enormous capacity for joy”提出真正答案。

信号词 not ... but ... rather than instead of while whereas unlike in contrast on the contrary not ... nor ...

What distinguishes ___ is not ___ or ___; it is ___.

    P4

    第4段 用 3-year-old 的 bathtub experiment、5-year-old 的 nonsense words 和 11-year-old 的 comic strip,展示儿童会因探索而 deeply absorbed。

信号词 for example for instance think of consider imagine such as one example is or

Think of a ___ who ___, a ___ who ___, or a ___ who ___.

男孩从“head and shoulders hanging down”到“features overflowing with energy”的变化,也直观批评了只强调 drills 的教育方式。

信号词 one day once when after then but yet suddenly a friend told me

After ___, a child felt ___. Yet when ___, he or she suddenly ___. This shows that ___.

    P6 P12

    第6段 将传统观点中的“charming but irrelevant byproduct”与作者所说的“intense absorption and pleasure”并置,形成价值判断上的 contrast。 后面的“not ... but rather”进一步说明,教育不该要求孩子 give up joy,而应引导他们在更成熟的活动中发现 joy。

信号词 but yet however instead rather than not ... but ... not ... but rather ... in contrast

The traditional view treats ___ as ___. Yet ___ is not ___ but rather ___.

    P7

第7段 的“Instead of trying to get children to work hard, why not focus on getting them to take pleasure...”

信号词 why not how can who would what could be isn't it shouldn't we can we really

Instead of ___, why not ___?

    P8 P10 P12

第8段 使用“The more horrible the school circumstances, the more important pleasure is”这一结构,建立困难环境与 joy 重要性之间的因果强化关系。

信号词 because therefore thus as a result consequently lead to result in due to the more ..., the more ...

The more ___, the more important ___ becomes, because ___.

    P10

    第10段 连用“You can force ... But you can’t force ...”,把可被外部控制的行为与无法被强迫的 deep learning 清楚分开。

信号词 but yet while whereas unlike instead of not ... but ... can ... but cannot ...

You can force someone to ___, but you cannot force them to ___.

信号词 as if like as ... as ... similar to just as in the same way compared with instead

We often treat ___ as if it were ___. Why not think of it as ___—something that ___?

IMPLIED MEANING ·

  • Swift

    P1
Even as a satire, it seems disgusting and shocking in America with its child-centered culture. But actually, the country is closer to his proposal than you might think.

But actually but actually however yet nevertheless nonetheless in fact

这个 opening gambit 为全文的 thesis 铺垫:现代教育 system 正在 harm children by ignoring their nature。

    P2
you'll hear a lot of the following words: 'standards,' 'results,' 'skills,' 'self-control,' 'accountability,' and so on.

对比类 you'll hear a lot of... but you'll hear... but while... what's missing is focus on... ignore emphasis on... neglect of talk about... overlook concerned with... indifferent to

这些词都是 about control 和 assessment, completely devoid of 任何关于 joy, pleasure, curiosity 的 consideration。

    P3
when people think about education, they are not thinking about what it feels like to be a child, or what makes childhood an important and valuable stage of life in its own right.

否定强调类 not thinking about... in its own right not thinking about fail to consider overlook ignore neglect dismiss

作者 explicitly point out 当前教育的 fundamental flaw:把 childhood 仅仅看作是通往 adulthood 的 transitional phase,而非 a valuable stage with its own characteristics and needs。'In its own right' 这个 phrase 强调 childhood 有其 intrinsic value,不应该被 purely instrumental goals (standards, results) 所 dominate。

    P4
The thing that sets children apart from adults is not their ignorance, nor their lack of skills. It's their enormous capacity for joy.

It's not... nor... it's neither... nor... but rather it's not... it's not... it's what sets apart is not... but the difference is not... but

作者通过这个 structure 直接 challenge conventional view of childhood。传统观点把 children 定义为 lacking knowledge 和 skills 的 incomplete beings,但作者 reframe 说 children 的 defining characteristic 是他们 superior capacity for joy—这是 adults 反而 lack 的 quality。这个 redefinition 是全文 argument 的 cornerstone:如果 joy 是 childhood 的 defining trait,那 education 应该 build on 而非 suppress it。

    P6
The traditional view of such moments is that they constitute a charming but irrelevant byproduct of youth—something to be pushed aside to make room for more important qualities

The traditional view... but the traditional view... but conventional wisdom... however commonly thought... yet while many believe... actually it's often said... but in fact

作者在这里 explicitly name 她要 challenge 的 conventional wisdom:认为 children's joy 是 'charming but irrelevant'。这个 characterization reveal 当前教育 paradigm 的 core assumption—joy 必须被 sacrifice 来为 'more important' qualities (perseverance, obligation) 让路。 这个 reversal 是 argumentative strategy 的关键:不是 children 需要 grow out of joy,而是 education 应该 help them find joy in more sophisticated forms。

    P7
Building on a child's ability to feel joy, rather than pushing it aside, wouldn't be that hard. It would just require a shift in the education world's mindset.

委婉否定类 wouldn't be that hard not difficult relatively simple just require merely need simply a matter of only takes

作者通过 'wouldn't be that hard' 和 'just require a shift in mindset' 这种 understated language, implicitly argue 当前问题的 root cause 不是 resource constraints 或 technical challenges,而是 education system 的 flawed priorities 和 assumptions。

    P8
Before you brush this argument aside as rubbish, or think of joy as an unaffordable luxury in a nation where there is awful poverty, low academic achievement, and high dropout rates, think again.

Before you brush this argument aside as before you dismiss before you reject you might think... but some may argue... however one objection is... yet critics might say... but

作者在此 preemptively address 一个 predictable objection:在面对 poverty 和 low achievement 的现实中,talk about joy 是 'unaffordable luxury'。但通过 'think again' 和下句的 'The more horrible... the more important',她完全 reverse 这个 logic。这个 rhetorical move 很 powerful:不仅 defend 她的 proposal,还 strengthen it by arguing joy is MOST needed in worst circumstances。这 counter 了 utilitarian objection,并为下一段 explain why pleasure is essential to learning 做铺垫。

    P10
Not only is this a boring and awful way to treat children, it makes no sense educationally.

Not only... it makes no sense not only... but not only... it also besides being... it's more than... it's makes no sense illogical

作者通过这个 escalating critique,从两个 dimensions 攻击 current practice:首先是 moral dimension (boring and awful treatment of children),然后是 educational effectiveness dimension (makes no sense)。这个 structure imply 即使你不 care about children's well-being (moral argument),仅从 pragmatic educational outcomes 角度看,current approach 也是 counterproductive 的。这为下一句引入 'decades of research' 做铺垫,将 argument 从 philosophical level 转向 empirical evidence level。

    P11
Why not instead think of learning as if it were food—something so valuable to humans that they have evolved to experience it as a pleasure?

Why not instead why not instead why not what if couldn't we shouldn't we isn't it better to

把 learning 从 'medicine' (necessary evil) reframe 为 'food' (natural pleasure and biological necessity)。这个 analogy 很 powerful:1) 暗示 desire for learning 是 evolved trait; 2) pleasure 不是 obstacle 而是 mechanism; 3) forcing 是 unnatural。这个 metaphor 将前面所有 arguments 浓缩为一个 memorable image,为 conclusion 的 'pleasure is precondition' claim 提供 conceptual foundation。

    P12
'Pleasure' is not a dirty word. And it doesn't run counter to the goals of public education.

否定澄清类 not a dirty word... doesn't run counter not a dirty word doesn't run counter to not opposed to not incompatible with far from being contrary to belief

Saying it's 'not a dirty word' acknowledge 在 educational discourse 中 pleasure 被视为 inappropriate 或 frivolous。Saying it 'doesn't run counter to' education goals acknowledge 有人认为 joy 和 academic rigor 是 mutually exclusive。但作者通过下一句的 'it is the precondition' 完全 reverse 这个 hierarchy。这个 progression (not dirty → doesn't conflict → actually necessary) 是 powerful closing move,将整个 essay 的 argument culminate in one definitive claim。

本文 title 直接说 'schools lack' joy 和 'should not require giving up pleasure',这是明显的 value judgment 和 critical stance。

第2段 和 第3段 直接 criticize 当前教育系统,用 'standards', 'accountability' 等词描述现状,然后指出 people are not thinking about what it feels like to be a child。这是典型的 problem-solution structure in argumentation。

    第4段 作者自我介绍 'I'm a mother, teacher, and developmental psychologist',这是 establishing ethos。第5段 用朋友的 touching story about a boy 来 evoke emotions,这是 pathos。

第6段 说 'Becoming educated should not require giving up joy',第7段 说 'why not focus on getting them to take pleasure',第10段 说 'you have to help the child find pleasure'。这些 prescriptive statements 和 rhetorical questions 是在 advocating for specific actions。

第8段 说 'Before you brush this argument aside as rubbish',直接 address potential objections(joy is luxury, poverty is more important),然后 refute them by saying 'think again' 和 'the more horrible...the more important pleasure is'。

第12段 用强调性语言 'Joy should not be trained out' 和 'Pleasure is not a dirty word' 来 reinforce the thesis,最后说 'it is the precondition',这是 definitive conclusion。

  7. 本文完美展现了议论文的 all six characteristics:从 title 的 evaluative stance 到 opening 的 satirical analogy,从 body 的 problem identification 到 personal narratives for persuasion,从 prescriptive statements throughout 到 anticipating objections in 第8段,最后以 emphatic conclusion 收尾。
