Passage 5
P1When I decided to quit my full time employment it never occurred to me that I might become a part of a new international trend. A lateral move that hurt my pride and blocked my professional progress prompted me to abandon my relatively high profile career although, in the manner of a disgraced government minister, I covered my exit by claiming "I wanted to spend more time with my family".

P2Curiously, some two-and-a-half years and two novels later, my experiment in what the Americans term "downshifting" has turned my tired excuse into an absolute reality. I have been transformed from a passionate advocate of the philosophy of "having it all", preached by Linda Kelsey for the past seven years in the pages of She magazine, into a woman who is happy to settle for a bit of everything.

P3I have discovered, as perhaps Kelsey will after her much-publicized resignation from the editorship of She after a build-up of stress, that abandoning the doctrine of "juggling your life", and making the alternative move into "downshifting" brings with it far greater rewards than financial success and social status. Nothing could persuade me to return to the kind of life Kelsey used to advocate and I once enjoyed: 12-hour working days, pressured deadlines, the fearful strain of office politics and the limitations of being a parent on "quality time".

P4In America, the move away from juggling to a simpler, less materialistic lifestyle is a well-established trend. Downshifting—also known in America as "voluntary simplicity" has, ironically, even bred a new area of what might be termed anticonsumerism. There are a number of bestselling downshifting self-help books for people who want to simplify their lives; there are newsletters, such as The Tightwad Gazette, that give hundreds of thousands of Americans useful tips on anything from recycling their cling-film to making their own soap; there are even support groups for those who want to achieve the mid-'90s equivalent of dropping out.

P5While in America the trend started as a reaction to the economic decline—after the mass redundancies caused by downsizing in the late '80s—and is still linked to the politics of thrift, in Britain, at least among the middle-class downshifters of my acquaintance, we have different reasons for seeking to simplify our lives.

P6For the women of my generation who were urged to keep juggling through the '80s, downshifting in the mid-'90s is not so much a search for the mythical good life—growing your own organic vegetables, and risking turning into one—as a personal recognition of your limitations.

37.
Which of the following is true according to paragraph 1?
[ A ]Full-time employment is a new international trend.
[ B ]The writer was compelled by circumstances to leave her job.
[ C ]"A lateral move" means stepping out of full-time employment.
[ D ]The writer was only too eager to spend more time with her family.

B(细节题)

Which of the following is true according to paragraph

Which of the following is true according to paragraph 1 是一个典型的 which 引导的疑问句,主句省略,which 充当主语,of the following 限定范围,according to paragraph 1 是状语,结构清晰、无陷阱。

P1

A lateral move that hurt my pride and blocked my professional progress prompted me to abandon my relatively high profile career although, in the manner of a disgraced government minister, I covered my exit by claiming "I wanted to spend more time with my family".

Full-time employment is a new international trend 把 a new international trend 的主语偷换成 full-time employment;原文说的是"辞掉全职"成了新趋势,正好相反。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • A lateral move that hurt my pride and blocked my professional progress prompted me to abandon my relatively high profile careerThe writer was compelled by circumstances to leave her job

预判说被外部环境逼走,B 用 compelled by circumstances 准确对应 prompted by a lateral move,且与 covered my exit 暗示的非自愿离场吻合。

"A lateral move" means stepping out of full-time employment 把 A lateral move(公司内部平级调动)解释成"辞掉全职";原文中 lateral move 是 prompted 的主语,是辞职的诱因,而非辞职本身。

The writer was only too eager to spend more time with her family I wanted to spend more time with my family 当成真实意愿;原文 covered my exit by claiming 已亮明这是遮羞之辞。

38.
The writer's experiment shows that downshifting____
[ A ]enables her to realize her dream
[ B ]helps her mold a new philosophy of life
[ C ]prompts her to abandon her high social status
[ D ]leads her to accept the doctrine of She magazine

B(细节题)

The writer's experiment shows that downshifting____ 要求选出原文已经表述出来的 shows 的内容,没有要求做超出文本的推理。

P2

I have been transformed from a passionate advocate of the philosophy of "having it all", preached by Linda Kelsey for the past seven years in the pages of She magazine, into a woman who is happy to settle for a bit of everything.

enables her to realize her dream 中的 dream 在原文里没有任何对应;作者描述的是 settle for a bit of everything,即降低期望、退守安稳,与"实现梦想"相反。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • I have been transformed from a passionate advocate of the philosophy of "having it all"...into a woman who is happy to settle for a bit of everythinghelps her mold a new philosophy of life

    预判说"对人生信条的重塑",B 项 mold a new philosophy of life 一字不差地表达了"塑造新人生哲学",与 transformed from...into...

prompts her to abandon her high social status 描述的是"促使她放弃高地位"——这属于 P1 中辞职的动机,不是 P2 中实验显示出的结果,与 experiment shows that 的设问对象错位。

leads her to accept the doctrine of She magazine 把 She 杂志的信条当作她接受的对象;原文 passionate advocate of the philosophy of "having it all", preached by Linda Kelsey...in the pages of She magazine 与 abandoning the doctrine of "juggling your life" 显示作者是从该信条转出而非走入。

39.
"Juggling one's life" probably means living a life characterized by____.
[ A ]non-materialistic lifestyle
[ B ]a bit of everything
[ C ]extreme stress
[ D ]anti-consumerism

C(词义句意题)

probably means living a life characterized by

"Juggling one's life" probably means living a life characterized by____ 主语为带引号短语,谓语 means 后接动名词短语 living a life,再用过去分词 characterized by 引出后置定语,空格处即为该定语的核心名词。

P3

Nothing could persuade me to return to the kind of life Kelsey used to advocate and I once enjoyed: 12-hour working days, pressured deadlines, the fearful strain of office politics and the limitations of being a parent on "quality time".

a bit of everything 出自 settle for a bit of everything,描述的是作者转变后的新生活方式,而非 juggling 那种"既要又要"。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • 12-hour working days, pressured deadlines, the fearful strain of office politics and the limitations of being a parent on "quality time"extreme stress

40.
According to the passage, downshifting emerged in the U.S. as a result of____
[ A ]the quick pace of modern life
[ B ]man's adventurous spirit
[ C ]man's search for mythical experiences
[ D ]the economic situation

D(细节题)

downshifting emerged in the U.S. as a result of____ 询问的是一个客观因果关系,且范围限定在美国,回文可直接核对,无需推理。

According to the passage, downshifting emerged in the U.S. as a result of____ 主句结构为 downshifting emerged,状语 in the U.S. 和 as a result of___ 分别给出地点和原因,空格充当 of 的宾语。

P5

While in America the trend started as a reaction to the economic decline—after the mass redundancies caused by downsizing in the late '80s—and is still linked to the politics of thrift, in Britain, at least among the middle-class downshifters of my acquaintance, we have different reasons for seeking to simplify our lives.

the quick pace of modern life

    man's adventurous spirit

man's search for mythical experiences 把 the mythical good life 偷换成 mythical experiences;原文用 the mythical good life 是说英国女性 downshifting 时并非追求这种田园神话(not so much...as...),且只描述英国、与美国 downshifting 起因无关。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • the trend started as a reaction to the economic declinethe economic situation

预判说"经济衰退所致",D 项 the economic situation 把 economic decline 一般化为"经济状况";再结合 the mass redundancies caused by downsizing in the late '80s 这一裁员事实,D 是唯一与经济相关的选项。
