Part III Section C (1)
Directions: There  are 2 passages  in this section. Each passage  is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them  there  are four choices marked A),B),C)and D).You should decide  on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.
Passage One
Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.
P1Perhaps it is time for farmers to put their feet up now that robots are used to inspect crops, dig up weeds, and even have become shepherds, too. Commercial growing fields are astronomically huge and take thousands of man-hours to operate. One prime example is one of Australia's most isolated cattle stations, Suplejack Downs in the Northern Territory, extending across 4,000 square kilometers, taking over 13 hours to reach by car from the nearest major town—Alice Springs.

P2The extreme isolation of these massive farms leaves them often unattended, and monitored only once or twice a year, which means if the livestock falls ill or requires assistance, it can be a long time for farmers to discover.

P3However, robots are coming to the rescue.

P4Robots are currently under a two-year trial in Wales which will train "farmbots" to herd, monitor the health of livestock, and make sure there is enough pasture for them to graze on. The robots are equipped with many sensors to identify conditions of the environment, cattle and food, using thermal and vision sensors that detect changes in body temperature.

P5"You've also got color, texture and shape sensors looking down at the ground to check pasture quality," says Salah Sukkarieh of the University of Sydney, who will carry out trials on several farms in central New South Wales.

P6During the trials, the robot algorithms(算法) and mechanics will be fine-tuned to make it better suited to ailing livestock and ensure it safely navigates around potential hazards including trees, mud, swamps, and hills.

P7"We want to improve the quality of animal health and make it easier for farmers to maintain large landscapes where animals roam free," says Sukkarieh.

P8The robots are not limited to herding and monitoring livestock. They have been created to count individual fruit, inspect crops, and even pull weeds.

P9Many robots are equipped with high-tech sensors and complex learning algorithms to avoid injuring humans as they work side by side. The robots also learn the most efficient and safest passages, and allow engineers and farmers to analyze and better optimize the attributes and tasks of the robot, as well as provide a live stream giving real-time feedback on exactly what is happening on the farms.

P10Of course, some worry lies in replacing agricultural workers. However, it is farmers that are pushing for the advancements due to ever-increasing labor vacancies, making it difficult to maintain large-scale operations.

P11The robots have provided major benefits to farmers in various ways, from hunting and pulling weeds to monitoring the condition of every single fruit. Future farms will likely experience a greater deal of autonomy as robots take up more and more farm work efficiently.

B(细节题)

题干What may farmers be able to do with robots appearing on the farming scene?

What may farmers be able to do,情态动词may表可能性;介词短语with robots appearing on the farming scene是伴随状语,with+宾语+现在分词结构,意为"随着机器人出现在农业场景中",结构平铺直叙,无陷阱。

P1

Perhaps it is time for farmers to put their feet up now that robots are used to inspect crops, dig up weeds, and even have become shepherds, too.

    • put their feet upEnjoy more leisure hours.

    从预判"歇脚"到锁定Enjoy more leisure hours.,核心在于识别put their feet up的习语义=休闲,正面命中。

Modify the genes of crops.

A(细节题)

题干What will "farmbots" be expected to do?

What will "farmbots" be expected to do?,be expected to do意为"被期待做",等于原文中描述"它将要做什么"的句子;结构直白。

P4

Robots are currently under a two-year trial in Wales which will train "farmbots" to herd, monitor the health of livestock, and make sure there is enough pasture for them to graze on.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • to herd, monitor the health of livestock, and make sure there is enough pasture for them to graze onTake up many of the farmers' routines.

Take up many of the farmers' routines.

Lead the trend in farming the world over.

原文提到make sure there is enough pasture只是三项职能之一,把它单独提出来作为farmbots的总职能,以偏概全。

48.
What can robots do when equipped with high-tech sensors and complex learning algorithms?
A)Help farmers choose the most efficient and safest passages.
B)Help farmers simplify their farming tasks and management.
C)Allow farmers to learn instantly what is occurring on the farm.

C(细节题)

题干What can robots do when equipped with high-tech sensors and complex learning algorithms?

What can robots do when equipped with high-tech sensors and complex learning algorithms?,when引导时间/条件状语从句,主语省略并采用过去分词equipped作被动,等价于when they are equipped with...;主句问"能做什么",直白无陷阱。

P9

The robots also learn the most efficient and safest passages, and allow engineers and farmers to analyze and better optimize the attributes and tasks of the robot, as well as provide a live stream giving real-time feedback on exactly what is happening on the farms.

The robots also learn the most efficient and safest passages,学习路径的主语是机器人本身,而非帮农民选择;选项把动作主体换成farmers,主谓错位。

Help farmers simplify their farming tasks and management.

    • provide a live stream giving real-time feedback on exactly what is happening on the farmsAllow farmers to learn instantly what is occurring on the farm.

Allow farmers to learn instantly what is occurring on the farm.,关键是识别real-time=instantly、happening=occurring这两组同义替换。

49.
Why are farmers pressing for robotic farming?
A)Farming costs are fast increasing.
B)Robotics technology is maturing.
C)Robotic farming is the trend.
D)Labor shortage is worsening

D(细节题)

题干Why are farmers pressing for robotic farming?

Why are farmers pressing for robotic farming?,现在进行时的press for意为"急切要求、力推",问"农民为什么力推机器人化农业";句式简单。

P10

However, it is farmers that are pushing for the advancements due to ever-increasing labor vacancies, making it difficult to maintain large-scale operations.

    原文没有说机器人技术已经成熟,只是说农民们正在推动其进步(pushing for the advancements);Robotics technology is maturing.

    Robotic farming is the trend

    • ever-increasing labor vacanciesLabor shortage is worsening

50.
What does the author think future farms will be like?
A)More and more automated.
B)More and more productive.
C)Larger and larger in scale.
D)Better and better in condition.

A(推断题)

题干What does the author think future farms will be like?

What does the author think future farms will be like?,think后接宾语从句"future farms will be like (what)",what是介词like的宾语前置;结构稍绕,但语义即"作者认为未来农场会是怎样"。

P11

Future farms will likely experience a greater deal of autonomy as robots take up more and more farm work efficiently.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • a greater deal of autonomyMore and more automated.
    • robots take up more and more farm work efficientlyMore and more automated.

    从预判"更高自主化"直接锁定More and more automated.,核心是看出autonomy=automated这一词性转换型同义替换。
