Text 1
P1Everybody loves a fat pay rise. Yet pleasure at your own can vanish if you learn that a colleague has been given a bigger one. Indeed, if he has a reputation for slacking, you might even be outraged. Such behaviour is regarded as "all too human", with the underlying assumption that other animals would not be capable of this finely developed sense of grievance. But a study by Sarah Brosnan and Frans de Waal of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, which has just been published in Nature, suggests that it is all too monkey, as well.

P2The researchers studied the behaviour of female brown capuchin monkeys. They look cute. They are good-natured, co-operative creatures, and they share their food readily. Above all, like their female human counterparts, they tend to pay much closer attention to the value of "goods and services" than males.

P3Such characteristics make them perfect candidates for Dr. Brosnan's and Dr. de Waal's study. The researchers spent two years teaching their monkeys to exchange tokens for food. Normally, the monkeys were happy enough to exchange pieces of rock for slices of cucumber. However, when two monkeys were placed in separate but adjoining chambers, so that each could observe what the other was getting in return for its rock, their behaviour became markedly different.

P4In the world of capuchins grapes are luxury goods (and much preferable to cucumbers). So when one monkey was handed a grape in exchange for her token, the second was reluctant to hand hers over for a mere piece of cucumber. And if one received a grape without having to provide her token in exchange at all, the other either tossed her own token at the researcher or out of the chamber, or refused to accept the slice of cucumber. Indeed, the mere presence of a grape in the other chamber (without an actual monkey to eat it) was enough to induce resentment in a female capuchin.

P5The researchers suggest that capuchin monkeys, like humans, are guided by social emotions. In the wild, they are a co-operative, group-living species. Such co-operation is likely to be stable only when each animal feels it is not being cheated. Feelings of righteous indignation, it seems, are not the preserve of people alone. Refusing a lesser reward completely makes these feelings abundantly clear to other members of the group. However, whether such a sense of fairness evolved independently in capuchins and humans, or whether it stems from the common ancestor that the species had 35 million years ago, is, as yet, an unanswered question.

21.
In the opening paragraph, the author introduces his topic by____
[ A ]posing a contrast.
[ B ]justifying an assumption.
[ C ]making a comparison.
[ D ]explaining a phenomenon.

C(例证目的题)

introduces his topic by

P1

Everybody loves a fat pay rise.

原文确实提到了一个 underlying assumption(other animals would not be capable of this finely developed sense of grievance),但紧接着的 But 句正是要推翻这个假设,作者根本没在为它辩护,更谈不上 justify(证成)。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • Such behaviour is regarded as "all too human"making a comparison
    • suggests that it is all too monkey, as wellmaking a comparison

22.
The statement "it is all too monkey" (Last line, Paragraph 1) implies that____
[ A ]monkeys are also outraged by slack rivals.
[ B ]resenting unfairness is also monkeys' nature.
[ C ]monkeys, like humans, tend to be jealous of each other.
[ D ]no animals other than monkeys can develop such emotions.

"it is all too monkey"这句话(第一段最后一行)暗示____

B(词义句意题)

The statement "it is all too monkey" implies that ____,主语是带定语的名词短语,谓语 implies 后接 that 引导的宾语从句作补全;结构清晰,无陷阱。

P1

Such behaviour is regarded as "all too human", with the underlying assumption that other animals would not be capable of this finely developed sense of grievance. But a study by Sarah Brosnan and Frans de Waal of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, which has just been published in Nature, suggests that it is all too monkey, as well.

outraged by slack rivals

    • this finely developed sense of grievanceresenting unfairness
    • it is all too monkey, as wellis also monkeys' nature

all too monkey 仿自 all too human,被仿的语义内核是 sense of grievance(不公感),所以"all too monkey"="猴子也具有这种不公感",与 resenting unfairness is also monkeys' nature 等值。

jealous of each other 偷换了 sense of grievance(不公感、被亏待感)的核心——grievance 指对不公正的怨愤,jealous 指对他人所有物的嫉妒;两者不是一回事,原文也无任何"互相嫉妒"的语义。

no animals other than monkeys can develop such emotions

23.
Female capuchin monkeys were chosen for the research most probably because they are____
[ A ]more inclined to weigh what they get.
[ B ]attentive to researchers' instructions.
[ C ]nice in both appearance and temperament.
[ D ]more generous than their male companions.

A(细节题)

chosen for the research most probably because

P2

Above all, like their female human counterparts, they tend to pay much closer attention to the value of "goods and services" than males.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • pay much closer attention to the value of "goods and services"more inclined to weigh what they get

作者亲自标出 Above all 的特质"更关注 goods and services 的价值",正是 weigh what they get(掂量所获)的同义改写——这就是雌猴入选研究的核心理由。

nice in both appearance and temperament 确实有原文支持(They look cute 与 good-natured),但这两条特征不是"被选作研究对象"的关键理由——作者用 Above all 把关键理由单挑出来是"关注价值",外貌温顺只是顺带一提。

原文只说雌猴 share their food readily(乐于分享)、pay much closer attention to the value ... than males(在"关注价值"上比雄性更甚),并未在"慷慨"这个维度上把雌猴和雄性做比较;more generous than their male companions 是把"分享"夸成"更慷慨于雄性",越界推断。

24.
Dr. Brosnan and Dr. de Waal have eventually found in their study that the monkeys____
[ A ]prefer grapes to cucumbers.
[ B ]can be taught to exchange things.
[ C ]will not be co-operative if feeling cheated.
[ D ]are unhappy when separated from others.

C(细节题)

eventually found in their study that the monkeys

Dr. Brosnan and Dr. de Waal have eventually found ... that the monkeys ____,have found 是现在完成时表研究已得出结论,that 引导宾语从句作 found 的宾语,从句缺谓语等待选项补全;无陷阱。

P5

The researchers suggest that capuchin monkeys, like humans, are guided by social emotions. In the wild, they are a co-operative, group-living species. Such co-operation is likely to be stable only when each animal feels it is not being cheated.

prefer grapes to cucumbers 是第 4 段实验设置的一个事实细节(grapes are luxury goods (and much preferable to cucumbers)),但题干问的是研究的"最终发现"——猴子的食物偏好不是研究结论,只是触发不公感的实验素材。

can be taught to exchange things 取自 The researchers spent two years teaching their monkeys to exchange tokens for food,但这是实验的方法/前置训练,不是研究的最终发现。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • Such co-operation is likely to be stable only when each animal feels it is not being cheatedwill not be co-operative if feeling cheated
    • Refusing a lesser reward completely makes these feelings abundantly clear to other members of the groupwill not be co-operative

The researchers suggest 给出的核心结论就是"被骗就闹、就不合作",这正是 will not be co-operative if feeling cheated 所表达的内容。

are unhappy when separated from others 把 placed in separate but adjoining chambers 这个实验布置(分置两邻室)夸大成"猴子因被分开而不开心"——原文从未说猴子因分离而不悦,它们不悦是因为看到同伴拿到葡萄而自己只拿黄瓜。

25.
What can we infer from the last paragraph?
[ A ]Monkeys can be trained to develop social emotions.
[ B ]Human indignation evolved from an uncertain source.
[ C ]Animals usually show their feelings openly as humans do.
[ D ]Cooperation among monkeys remains stable only in the wild.

B(推断题)

What can we infer from the last paragraph

What can we infer from the last paragraph?,what 作 infer 的宾语前置,from the last paragraph 为状语限定取证范围;结构平铺直叙,无陷阱。

P5

However, whether such a sense of fairness evolved independently in capuchins and humans, or whether it stems from the common ancestor that the species had 35 million years ago, is, as yet, an unanswered question.

第 5 段说 capuchin monkeys, like humans, are guided by social emotions——社会情感是它们本来就有的,In the wild, they are a co-operative, group-living species

    • such a sense of fairnessHuman indignation
    • whether such a sense of fairness evolved independently in capuchins and humans, or whether it stems from the common ancestor that the species had 35 million years ago, is, as yet, an unanswered questionevolved from an uncertain source

Human indignation evolved from an uncertain source 的意思。

Refusing a lesser reward completely makes these feelings abundantly clear to other members of the group

Cooperation among monkeys remains stable only in the wild Such co-operation is likely to be stable only when each animal feels it is not being cheated 中 only when 修饰的是"未感到被骗",不是"在野外"。
