Text 4
P1Americans no longer expect public figures, whether in speech or in writing, to command the English language with skill and gift. Nor do they aspire to such command themselves. In his latest book, Doing Our Own Thing: The Degradation of Language and Music and Why We Should Like, Care, John McWhorter, a linguist and controversialist of mixed liberal and conservative views, sees the triumph of 1960s counter-culture as responsible for the decline of formal English.

P2Blaming the permissive 1960s is nothing new, but this is not yet another criticism against the decline in education. Mr. McWhorter's academic speciality is language history and change, and he sees the gradual disappearance of "whom", for example, to be natural and no more regrettable than the loss of the case-endings of Old English.

P3But the cult of the authentic and the personal, "doing our own thing", has spelt the death of formal speech, writing, poetry and music. While even the modestly educated sought an elevated tone when they put pen to paper before the 1960s, even the most well regarded writing since then has sought to capture spoken English on the page. Equally, in poetry, the highly personal, performative genre is the only form that could claim real liveliness. In both oral and written English, talking is triumphing over speaking, spontaneity over craft.

P4Illustrated with an entertaining array of examples from both high and low culture, the trend that Mr. McWhorter documents is unmistakable. But it is less clear, to take the question of his subtitle, why we should, like, care. As a linguist, he acknowledges that all varieties of human language, including non-standard ones like Black English, can be powerfully expressive – there exists no language or dialect in the world that cannot convey complex ideas. He is not arguing, as many do, that we can no longer think straight because we do not talk proper.

P5Russians have a deep love for their own language and carry large chunks of memorized poetry in their heads, while Italian politicians tend to elaborate speech that would seem old-fashioned to most English-speakers. Mr. McWhorter acknowledges that formal language is not strictly necessary, and proposes no radical education reforms – he is really grieving over the loss of something beautiful more than useful. We now take our English "on paper plates instead of china". A shame, perhaps, but probably an inevitable one.

36.
According to Mc Whorter, the decline of formal English____
[ A ]is inevitable in radical education reforms.
[ B ]is but all too natural in language development.
[ C ]has caused the controversy over the counter-culture.
[ D ]brought about changes in public attitudes in the 1960s.

B(细节题)

According to Mc Whorter, the decline of formal English____ 是典型 "According to + 人/书" 句式,要求复述原文某一具体观点。

Q36 为待补全陈述句,主干是 "the decline of formal English ___",选项是谓语延伸;"According to Mc Whorter" 为状语,限定观点归属——务必抓住是 Mc Whorter 的看法,不是作者本人立场。

P2

Mr. McWhorter's academic speciality is language history and change, and he sees the gradual disappearance of "whom", for example, to be natural and no more regrettable than the loss of the case-endings of Old English.

is inevitable in radical education reforms 说衰落是激进教改的必然结果,原文 proposes no radical education reforms 反而明示麦克沃特不提任何激进教改,根本未把 decline 与 reforms 挂钩。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • natural and no more regrettable than the loss of the case-endings of Old Englishbut all too natural in language development

预判的"自然演变"在 but all too natural in language development 里被 natural+language development 精确对应,无任何添加。

has caused the controversy over the counter-culture 说衰落造成了对反主流文化的争议;原文 sees the triumph of 1960s counter-culture as responsible for the decline of formal English 恰是反主流文化"造成"了衰落,因果反过来。

brought about changes in public attitudes in the 1960s

37.
The word "talking" (Line 6, Paragraph 3) denotes____
[ A ]modesty.
[ B ]personality.
[ C ]liveliness.
[ D ]informality.

  • A) 谦逊。
D(词义句意题)

P3

In both oral and written English, talking is triumphing over speaking, spontaneity over craft.

    • talking is triumphing over speaking, spontaneity over craftinformality

38.
To which of the following statements would McWhorter most likely agree?
[ A ]Logical thinking is not necessarily related to the way we talk.
[ B ]Black English can be more expressive than standard English.
[ C ]Non-standard varieties of human language are just as entertaining.
[ D ]Of all the varieties, standard English can best convey complex ideas.

A(推断题)

To which of the following statements would McWhorter most likely agree?

To which ... would McWhorter agree 的倒装疑问句,which 引导的从句作 agree 的宾语;would 是虚拟语气表"最可能",与 most likely 叠加强化"推断"信号。

P4

He is not arguing, as many do, that we can no longer think straight because we do not talk proper.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • He is not arguing, as many do, that we can no longer think straight because we do not talk proper.Logical thinking is not necessarily related to the way we talk.

Logical thinking is not necessarily related to the way we talk.。

Black English can be more expressive than standard English. 说黑人英语比标准英语"更具"表现力;原文 all varieties of human language, including non-standard ones like Black English, can be powerfully expressive 只说所有变体"都"富有表现力,没做谁强谁弱的比较。

Non-standard varieties of human language are just as entertaining. 把原文 expressive(富有表现力)偷换为 entertaining(有娱乐性);entertaining 出现在 Illustrated with an entertaining array of examples,修饰的是举例本身而非语言变体。

Of all the varieties, standard English can best convey complex ideas. 称标准英语最能传达复杂思想;原文 there exists no language or dialect in the world that cannot convey complex ideas 明确说"世上没有哪种语言或方言不能传达复杂思想",即所有变体在这点上等同。

39.
The description of Russians' love of memorizing poetry shows the author's____
[ A ]interest in their language.
[ B ]appreciation of their efforts.
[ C ]admiration for their memory.
[ D ]contempt for their old-fashionedness.

B(态度题)

shows the author's____ 直接索要作者态度词,且选项均为情感/评价名词(interest/appreciation/admiration/contempt)。

Q39 主干 "The description ... shows the author's ___",主语是"对俄国人背诗的描写"这一动作名词化短语,shows 后接情感名词作宾语;注意立场归属是 the author's 而非 Russians 自己的。

P5

Russians have a deep love for their own language and carry large chunks of memorized poetry in their heads, while Italian politicians tend to elaborate speech that would seem old-fashioned to most English-speakers. Mr. McWhorter acknowledges that formal language is not strictly necessary, and proposes no radical education reforms – he is really grieving over the loss of something beautiful more than useful.

    interest in their language

    • grieving over the loss of something beautiful more than usefulappreciation of their efforts

    admiration for their memory

40.
According to the last paragraph, "paper plates" is to "china" as____
[ A ]"temporary" is to "permanent".
[ B ]"radical" is to "conservative".
[ C ]"functional" is to "artistic".
[ D ]"humble" is to "noble".

C(词义句意题)

"paper plates" is to "china" as____ 是 X∶Y∷A∶B 类比题型,本质是问比喻含义。

Q40 借 "X is to Y as A is to B" 类比结构出题,as 引出比例关系;空格处须填一组保持与 paper plates∶china 同一对立关系的对子,注意比对的是"关系"而不是单词义。

P5

Mr. McWhorter acknowledges that formal language is not strictly necessary, and proposes no radical education reforms – he is really grieving over the loss of something beautiful more than useful. We now take our English "on paper plates instead of china". A shame, perhaps, but probably an inevitable one.

"radical" is to "conservative" 是"激进-保守"政治/态度对立;原文 proposes no radical education reforms 里的 radical 是别处用法,与 paper plates∶china 的器物比喻毫无关联。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • grieving over the loss of something beautiful more than useful"functional" is to "artistic"
    • We now take our English "on paper plates instead of china"."functional" is to "artistic"
