Text 3
P1Of all the components of a good night's sleep, dreams seem to be least within our control. In dreams, a window opens into a world where logic is suspended and dead people speak. A century ago, Freud formulated his revolutionary theory that dreams were the disguised shadows of our unconscious desires and fears; by the late 1970s, neurologists had switched to thinking of them as just "mental noise" – the random byproducts of the neural-repair work that goes on during sleep. Now researchers suspect that dreams are part of the mind's emotional thermostat, regulating moods while the brain is "off-line." And one leading authority says that these intensely powerful mental events can be not only harnessed but actually brought under conscious control, to help us sleep and feel better. "It's your dream," says Rosalind Cartwright, chair of psychology at Chicago's Medical Center. "If you don't like it, change it."

P2Evidence from brain imaging supports this view. The brain is as active during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep – when most vivid dreams occur – as it is when fully awake, says Dr. Eric Nofzinger at the University of Pittsburgh. But not all parts of the brain are equally involved; the limbic system (the "emotional brain") is especially active, while the prefrontal cortex (the center of intellect and reasoning) is relatively quiet. "We wake up from dreams happy or depressed, and those feelings can stay with us all day." says Stanford sleep researcher Dr. William Dement.

P3The link between dreams and emotions shows up among the patients in Cartwright's clinic. Most people seem to have more bad dreams early in the night, progressing toward happier ones before awakening, suggesting that they are working through negative feelings generated during the day. Because our conscious mind is occupied with daily life we don't always think about the emotional significance of the day's events – until, it appears, we begin to dream.

P4And this process need not be left to the unconscious. Cartwright believes one can exercise conscious control over recurring bad dreams. As soon as you awaken, identify what is upsetting about the dream. Visualize how you would like it to end instead; the next time it occurs, try to wake up just enough to control its course. With much practice people can learn to, literally, do it in their sleep.

P5At the end of the day, there's probably little reason to pay attention to our dreams at all unless they keep us from sleeping or "we wake up in a panic," Cartwright says. Terrorism, economic uncertainties and general feelings of insecurity have increased people's anxiety. Those suffering from persistent nightmares should seek help from a therapist. For the rest of us, the brain has its ways of working through bad feelings. Sleep – or rather dream – on it and you'll feel better in the morning.

31.
Researchers have come to believe that dreams____
[ A ]can be modified in their courses.
[ B ]are susceptible to emotional changes.
[ C ]reflect our innermost desires and fears.
[ D ]are a random outcome of neural repairs.

A(细节题)

题干 Researchers have come to believe that dreams____ 是不完整陈述,要求按原文最新观点直接补全,没有 infer/imply 等推断信号。

Researchers have come to believe that dreams____ 主干是 Researchers have come to believe + that have come to believe

P1

Now researchers suspect that dreams are part of the mind's emotional thermostat, regulating moods while the brain is "off-line." And one leading authority says that these intensely powerful mental events can be not only harnessed but actually brought under conscious control, to help us sleep and feel better.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • brought under conscious controlcan be modified in their courses
    • If you don't like it, change it.can be modified in their courses

预判'梦可被有意识控制',选项 A 的 modified in their courses 正是对 brought under conscious control 与 change it 的上位同义替换,唯一命中。

(We wake up from dreams happy or depressed),不是情绪改变梦;选项 are susceptible to emotional changes(梦受情绪变化影响)把方向颠倒,且与 Q31 所问的'researchers 新观点'无关。

reflect our innermost desires and fears Freud formulated his revolutionary theory that dreams were the disguised shadows of our unconscious desires and fears,属于'a century ago'的旧观点,并非 Q31 所问的 researchers 'come to believe'。

are a random outcome of neural repairs 对应 by the late 1970s, neurologists had switched to thinking of them as just "mental noise" – the random byproducts of the neural-repair work that goes on during sleep,是上一代神经学家的旧观点,不是当下 researchers 的看法。

32.
By referring to the limbic system, the author intends to show____
[ A ]its function in our dreams.
[ B ]the mechanism of REM sleep.
[ C ]the relation of dreams to emotions.
[ D ]its difference from the prefrontal cortex.

C(例证目的题)

By referring to the limbic system, the author intends to show____ 是典型'借由提及 X,作者要说明 Y'的例证目的句式。

By referring to the limbic system, the author intends to show____ 句首 By + 动名词短语作方式状语,主句 the author intends to show + 宾语从句留空。

P2

Evidence from brain imaging supports this view. The brain is as active during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep – when most vivid dreams occur – as it is when fully awake, says Dr. Eric Nofzinger at the University of Pittsburgh. But not all parts of the brain are equally involved; the limbic system (the "emotional brain") is especially active, while the prefrontal cortex (the center of intellect and reasoning) is relatively quiet.

its function in our dreams

    • Evidence from brain imaging supports this view.the relation of dreams to emotions
    • the limbic system (the "emotional brain") is especially activethe relation of dreams to emotions

its difference from the prefrontal cortex

33.
The negative feelings generated during the day tend to____
[ A ]aggravate in our unconscious mind.
[ B ]develop into happy dreams.
[ C ]persist till the time we fall asleep.
[ D ]show up in dreams early at night.

D(细节题)

题干 The negative feelings generated during the day tend to____ 直接陈述待补全,问'倾向于发生什么',是事实描述。

The negative feelings generated during the day tend to____ 主干是 The negative feelings tend to + 不定式空缺;过去分词短语 generated during the day 后置修饰 feelings,意为'白天产生的负面情绪'。

P3

Most people seem to have more bad dreams early in the night, progressing toward happier ones before awakening, suggesting that they are working through negative feelings generated during the day.

persist till the time we fall asleep(持续到入睡)原文没说'白天负面情绪要撑到入睡才消',相反第三段说我们白天'忙着 daily life' 顾不上情绪意义,到了梦里才处理(we don't always think about the emotional significance of the day's events – until ... we begin to dream),但这并不等于情绪本身'持续到入睡'。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • Most people seem to have more bad dreams early in the night ... they are working through negative feelings generated during the dayshow up in dreams early at night
    • more bad dreams early in the nightearly at night

34.
Cartwright seems to suggest that____
[ A ]waking up in time is essential to the ridding of bad dreams.
[ B ]visualizing bad dreams helps bring them under control.
[ C ]dreams should be left to their natural progression.
[ D ]dreaming may not entirely belong to the unconscious.

Cartwright似乎暗示____

D(推断题)

题干 Cartwright seems to suggest that____ 含 seems to suggest,问的是言外之意而非原文字面表述。

Cartwright seems to suggest that____ 主干 Cartwright + 系动词性短语 seems to + suggest + that 从句空缺。

P4

And this process need not be left to the unconscious. Cartwright believes one can exercise conscious control over recurring bad dreams.

(As soon as you awaken, identify what is upsetting ... try to wake up just enough to control its course),并未说'及时醒来本身就是摆脱噩梦的关键'。选项 waking up in time is essential to the ridding of bad dreams 单把'及时醒来'拎出来当 essential 条件,属于过度推断。

Visualize how you would like it to end instead 让 visualize 的是'想要的结局',不是'噩梦本身';选项 visualizing bad dreams helps bring them under control 把可视化对象从'新结局'偷换成'噩梦',宾语错位。

原文核心主张正是'梦不必交给无意识、可主动干预',选项 dreams should be left to their natural progression(应让梦自然发展)与 Cartwright 立场完全相反。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • And this process need not be left to the unconscious.dreaming may not entirely belong to the unconscious
    • Cartwright believes one can exercise conscious control over recurring bad dreams.dreaming may not entirely belong to the unconscious

    预判'梦不完全是无意识',选项 D 用'may not entirely belong to the unconscious'恰好同向重写,且 may / entirely 控制好了推断强度,没越界——命中。

35.
What advice might Cartwright give to those who sometimes have bad dreams?
[ A ]Lead your life as usual.
[ B ]Seek professional help.
[ C ]Exercise conscious control.
[ D ]Avoid anxiety in the daytime.

Cartwright

A(细节题)

题干 What advice might Cartwright give to those who sometimes have bad dreams?

What advice might Cartwright give to those who sometimes have bad dreams? 主干 What advice + might Cartwright give;介宾结构 to those + 定语从句 who sometimes have bad dreams 修饰 those。

P5

At the end of the day, there's probably little reason to pay attention to our dreams at all unless they keep us from sleeping or "we wake up in a panic," Cartwright says. ... Those suffering from persistent nightmares should seek help from a therapist. For the rest of us, the brain has its ways of working through bad feelings. Sleep – or rather dream – on it and you'll feel better in the morning.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • there's probably little reason to pay attention to our dreams at allLead your life as usual.
    • For the rest of us, the brain has its ways of working through bad feelings.Lead your life as usual.

题干限定 sometimes have bad dreams 属于 the rest of us 而非 persistent nightmares 人群,对应建议是不必当回事、照常生活,A 命中。

Those suffering from persistent nightmares should seek help from a therapist——那是给'持续噩梦'人群的建议,不是给题干所问的'偶尔做噩梦'人群。

Exercise conscious control.

Terrorism, economic uncertainties and general feelings of insecurity have increased people's anxiety
