Text 1
P1In spite of "endless talk of difference," American society is an amazing machine for homogenizing people. There is "the democratizing uniformity of dress and discourse, and the casualness and absence of deference" characteristic of popular culture. People are absorbed into "a culture of consumption" launched by the 19th-century department stores that offered "vast arrays of goods in an elegant atmosphere. Instead of intimate shops catering to a knowledgeable elite," these were stores "anyone could enter, regardless of class or background. This turned shopping into a public and democratic act." The mass media, advertising and sports are other forces for homogenization.

P2Immigrants are quickly fitting into this common culture, which may not be altogether elevating but is hardly poisonous. Writing for the National Immigration Forum, Gregory Rodriguez reports that today's immigration is neither at unprecedented levels nor resistant to assimilation. In 1998 immigrants were 9.8 percent of the population; in 1900, 13.6 percent. In the 10 years prior to 1990, 3.1 immigrants arrived for every 1,000 residents; in the 10 years prior to 1890, 9.2 for every 1,000. Now, consider three indices of assimilation – language, home ownership and intermarriage.

P3The 1990 Census revealed that "a majority of immigrants from each of the fifteen most common countries of origin spoke English 'well' or 'very well' after ten years of residence." The children of immigrants tend to be bilingual and proficient in English. "By the third generation, the original language is lost in the majority of immigrant families." Hence the description of America as a "graveyard" for languages. By 1996 foreign-born immigrants who had arrived before 1970 had a home ownership rate of 75.6 percent, higher than the 69.8 percent rate among native-born Americans.

P4Foreign-born Asians and Hispanics "have higher rates of intermarriage than do U.S.-born whites and blacks." By the third generation, one third of Hispanic women are married to non-Hispanics, and 41 percent of Asian-American women are married to non-Asians.

P5Rodriguez notes that children in remote villages around the world are fans of superstars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Garth Brooks, yet "some Americans fear that immigrants living within the United States remain somehow immune to the nation's assimilative power."

P6Are there divisive issues and pockets of seething anger in America? Indeed. It is big enough to have a bit of everything. But particularly when viewed against America's turbulent past, today's social indices hardly suggest a dark and deteriorating social environment.

21.
The word "homogenizing" (Line 2, Paragraph 1) most probably means____
[ A ]identifying.
[ B ]associating.
[ C ]assimilating.
[ D ]monopolizing.

  • A) 识别
  • B) 联合
  • C) 同化
  • D) 垄断
C(词义句意题)

The word "homogenizing" (Line 2, Paragraph 1) most probably means

The word ... most probably means ____,括号里 Line 2, Paragraph 1 是位置状语;结构平铺直叙,无陷阱。

P1

American society is an amazing machine for homogenizing people. There is "the democratizing uniformity of dress and discourse, and the casualness and absence of deference" characteristic of popular culture.

    • the democratizing uniformity of dress and discourseassimilating
    • Immigrants are quickly fitting into this common cultureassimilating

22.
According to the author, the department stores of the 19th century____
[ A ]played a role in the spread of popular culture.
[ B ]became intimate shops for common consumers.
[ C ]satisfied the needs of a knowledgeable elite.
[ D ]owed its emergence to the culture of consumption.

A(细节题)

According to the author, the department stores of the 19th century

P1

People are absorbed into "a culture of consumption" launched by the 19th-century department stores that offered "vast arrays of goods in an elegant atmosphere." ... This turned shopping into a public and democratic act. The mass media, advertising and sports are other forces for homogenization.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • a "culture of consumption" launched by the 19th-century department storesplayed a role in the spread of popular culture.
    • a culture of consumptionpopular culture

预判中的「推动 + 消费/流行文化」与 played a role in the spread of popular culture.

Instead of intimate shops catering to a knowledgeable elite, these were stores anyone could enter

原文明说百货商店与「intimate shops catering to a knowledgeable elite」相对立,anyone could enter, regardless of class or background;选项却说商店「满足了见多识广的精英的需要」,与原文相反。

原文 a "culture of consumption" launched by the 19th-century department stores 中 launched by 表明:消费文化是被百货商店开启的——商店是因,文化是果。

23.
The text suggests that immigrants now in the U.S. ____
[ A ]are resistant to homogenization.
[ B ]exert a great influence on American culture.
[ C ]are hardly a threat to the common culture.
[ D ]constitute the majority of the population.

C(推断题)

The text suggests that immigrants now in the U.S.

The text suggests that ...,that

P2

Immigrants are quickly fitting into this common culture, which may not be altogether elevating but is hardly poisonous. ... today's immigration is neither at unprecedented levels nor resistant to assimilation.

    • is hardly poisonousare hardly a threat to the common culture
    • today's immigration is neither at unprecedented levels nor resistant to assimilationare hardly a threat to the common culture

把预判中的「不构成威胁」拿去对四项,are hardly a threat to the common culture 同义复述,无歧义。

In 1998 immigrants were 9.8 percent of the population

24.
Why are Arnold Schwarzenegger and Garth Brooks mentioned in Paragraph 5?
[ A ]To prove their popularity around the world.
[ B ]To reveal the public's fear of immigrants.
[ C ]To give examples of successful immigrants.
[ D ]To show the powerful influence of American culture.

Garth Brooks?

D(例证目的题)

Why are Arnold Schwarzenegger and Garth Brooks mentioned in Paragraph 5?

P5

Rodriguez notes that children in remote villages around the world are fans of superstars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Garth Brooks, yet "some Americans fear that immigrants living within the United States remain somehow immune to the nation's assimilative power."

原文用 yet 把「some Americans fear ... immune to the nation's assimilative power」呈现为一种被反讽的担忧;作者本人并不认同这种担忧,更不是为了「揭示」它而举例。

    • children in remote villages around the world are fans of superstars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Garth BrooksTo show the powerful influence of American culture.

To show the powerful influence of American culture.

25.
In the author's opinion, the absorption of immigrants into American society is____
[ A ]rewarding.
[ B ]successful.
[ C ]fruitless.
[ D ]harmful.

  • A) 有益的
  • B) 成功的
  • C) 徒劳的
  • D) 有害的
B(态度题)

In the author's opinion, the absorption of immigrants into American society is

Q25 是不完整陈述句,主语 the absorption of immigrants into American society 较长,is 之后由选项补完;考生须看清主语整体后再填态度词。

    • Immigrants are quickly fitting into this common culturesuccessful.
    • today's social indices hardly suggest a dark and deteriorating social environmentsuccessful.
    • By 1996 foreign-born immigrants who had arrived before 1970 had a home ownership rate of 75.6 percent, higher than the 69.8 percent rate among native-born Americans.successful.

原文 may not be altogether elevating but is hardly poisonous 已经明确说融入「几乎不有害」,D 却说「有害」,正反颠倒。
