P1When prehistoric man arrived in new parts of the world, something strange happened to the large animals: they suddenly became extinct. Smaller species survived. The large, slow-growing animals were easy game, and were quickly hunted to extinction. Now something similar could be happening in the oceans.

P2That the seas are being overfished has been known for years. What researchers such as Ransom Myers and Boris Worm have shown is just how fast things are changing. They have looked at half a century of data from fisheries around the world. Their methods do not attempt to estimate the actual biomass (the amount of living biological matter) of fish species in particular parts of the ocean, but rather changes in that biomass over time. According to their latest paper published in Nature, the biomass of large predators (animals that kill and eat other animals) in a new fishery is reduced on average by 80% within 15 years of the start of exploitation. In some long-fished areas, it has halved again since then.

P3Dr. Worm acknowledges that these figures are conservative. One reason for this is that fishing technology has improved. Today's vessels can find their prey using satellites and sonar, which were not available 50 years ago. That means a higher proportion of what is in the sea is being caught, so the real difference between present and past is likely to be worse than the one recorded by changes in catch sizes. In the early days, too, longlines would have been more saturated with fish. Some individuals would therefore not have been caught, since no baited hooks would have been available to trap them, leading to an underestimate of fish stocks in the past. Furthermore, in the early days of longline fishing, a lot of fish were lost to sharks after they had been hooked. That is no longer a problem, because there are fewer sharks around now.

P4Dr. Myers and Dr. Worm argue that their work gives a correct baseline, which future management efforts must take into account. They believe the data support an idea current among marine biologists, that of the "shifting baseline". The notion is that people have failed to detect the massive changes which have happened in the ocean because they have been looking back only a relatively short time into the past. That matters because theory suggests that the maximum sustainable yield that can be cropped from a fishery comes when the biomass of a target species is about 50% of its original levels. Most fisheries are well below that, which is a bad way to do business.

31.
The extinction of large prehistoric animals is noted to suggest that____
[ A ]large animals were vulnerable to the changing environment.
[ B ]small species survived as large animals disappeared.
[ C ]large sea animals may face the same threat today.
[ D ]slow-growing fish outlive fast-growing ones.

C(例证目的题)

The extinction of large prehistoric animals is noted to suggest that

The extinction of large prehistoric animals is noted to suggest that 主干是 The extinction is noted to suggest that…,is noted to suggest 是"被提及以暗示"的被动结构,that 引出宾语从句作为答案空位;句中无陷阱,只需读懂"提到史前大动物灭绝这件事,是为了暗示____"。

P1

Now something similar could be happening in the oceans.

large animals were vulnerable to the changing environment The large, slow-growing animals were easy game, and were quickly hunted to extinction.,是"被人类捕猎"而非"环境变化"。

small species survived as large animals disappeared

    • Now something similar could be happening in the oceans.large sea animals may face the same threat today
    • in the oceanslarge sea animals

The large, slow-growing animals were easy game, and were quickly hunted to extinction.

32.
We can infer from Dr. Myers and Dr. Worm's paper that____
[ A ]the stock of large predators in some old fisheries has reduced by 90%.
[ B ]there are only half as many fisheries as there were 15 years ago.
[ C ]the catch sizes in new fisheries are only 20% of the original amount.
[ D ]the number of large predators dropped faster in new fisheries than in the old.

A(推断题)

We can infer from Dr. Myers and Dr. Worm's paper that

We can infer from Dr. Myers and Dr. Worm's paper that 主干是 We can infer that…,from

P2

According to their latest paper published in Nature, the biomass of large predators (animals that kill and eat other animals) in a new fishery is reduced on average by 80% within 15 years of the start of exploitation. In some long-fished areas, it has halved again since then.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • reduced on average by 80% within 15 years of the start of exploitationthe stock of large predators in some old fisheries has reduced by 90%
    • In some long-fished areasin some old fisheries

there are only half as many fisheries as there were 15 years ago 说渔场数量减半,但原文 it has halved again since then. 中 it 指代 the biomass of large predators(生物量),不是渔场数量。

the catch sizes in new fisheries are only 20% of the original amount 说渔获量只剩原来的 20%,但原文说的是 the biomass of large predators … is reduced on average by 80%——是"大型捕食者生物量"减 80%,不是"渔获量"。Dr. Worm 在第 3 段更明确指出 real difference between present and past is likely to be worse than the one recorded by changes in catch sizes,明确把 biomass 与 catch sizes 区分开。

the number of large predators dropped faster in new fisheries than in the old

33.
By saying "these figures are conservative" (Line 1, Paragraph 3), Dr. Worm means that____
[ A ]fishing technology has improved rapidly.
[ B ]the catch-sizes are actually smaller than recorded.
[ C ]the marine biomass has suffered a greater loss.
[ D ]the data collected so far are out of date.

C(词义句意题)

By saying "these figures are conservative" (Line 1, Paragraph 3), Dr. Worm means that

By saying "these figures are conservative" (Line 1, Paragraph 3), Dr. Worm means that 主干是 Dr. Worm means that…,by saying

P3

Dr. Worm acknowledges that these figures are conservative. One reason for this is that fishing technology has improved. … That means a higher proportion of what is in the sea is being caught, so the real difference between present and past is likely to be worse than the one recorded by changes in catch sizes.

the catch-sizes are actually smaller than recorded

    • the real difference between present and past is likely to be worse than the one recorded by changes in catch sizesthe marine biomass has suffered a greater loss
    • these figures are conservativethe marine biomass has suffered a greater loss

the data collected so far are out of date

34.
Dr. Myers and other researchers hold that____
[ A ]people should look for a baseline that can work for a longer time.
[ B ]fisheries should keep their yields below 50% of the biomass.
[ C ]the ocean biomass should be restored to its original level.
[ D ]people should adjust the fishing baseline to the changing situation.

Myers

D(细节题)

Dr. Myers and other researchers hold that

Dr. Myers and other researchers hold that 主干是 Dr. Myers and other researchers hold that…,hold that

P4

They believe the data support an idea current among marine biologists, that of the "shifting baseline". The notion is that people have failed to detect the massive changes which have happened in the ocean because they have been looking back only a relatively short time into the past.

people should look for a baseline that can work for a longer time 说要找"能用更长时间的基线",但原文主张的不是"基线要长寿",而是"基线参考的回望时段要拉长 / 要随变化漂移";longer time 偷换了 shifting 的方向。

fisheries should keep their yields below 50% of the biomass 说"渔获量应低于生物量的 50%",但原文 the maximum sustainable yield … comes when the biomass of a target species is about 50% of its original levels 说的是"当目标物种生物量为原始水平的 50% 时,可持续捕捞量最大"——50% 指生物量与原始量之比,不是渔获与生物量之比,且原文是"维持在 50% 左右",不是"低于 50%"。

the ocean biomass should be restored to its original level

    • the "shifting baseline"people should adjust the fishing baseline to the changing situation
    • people have failed to detect the massive changes which have happened in the ocean because they have been looking back only a relatively short time into the pastadjust the fishing baseline to the changing situation

35.
The author seems to be mainly concerned with most fisheries'____
[ A ]management efficiency.
[ B ]biomass level.
[ C ]catch-size limits.
[ D ]technological application.

B(主旨题)

The author seems to be mainly concerned with most fisheries' 用 mainly concerned with 直接问作者主要关注什么,是典型主旨题问法。

The author seems to be mainly concerned with most fisheries' 主干是

    • Most fisheries are well below that, which is a bad way to do business.biomass level
    • the biomass of large predators (animals that kill and eat other animals) in a new fishery is reduced on average by 80% within 15 years of the start of exploitationbiomass level
