Part III Section C (1)
Directions: There  are 2 passages  in this section. Each passage  is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them  there  are four choices marked A),B),C)and D).You should decide  on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.
Passage One
Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.
P1While human achievements in mathematics continue to reach new levels of complexity, many of us who aren't mathematicians at heart (or engineers by trade) may struggle to remember the last time we used calculus(微积分).

P2It's a fact not lost on American educators, who amid rising math failure rates are debating how math can better meet the real-life needs of students. Should we change the way math is taught in schools, or eliminate some courses entirely?

P3Andrew Hacker, Queens College political science professor, thinks that advanced algebra and other higher-level math should be cut from curricula in favor of courses with more routine usefulness, like statistics.

P4"We hear on all sides that we're not teaching enough mathematics, and the Chinese are running rings around us," Hacker says. "I'm suggesting we're teaching too much mathematics to too many people…not everybody has to know calculus. If you're going to become an aeronautical(航空的) engineer, fine. But most of us aren't."

P5Instead, Hacker is pushing for more courses like the one he teaches at Queens College: Numeracy 101. There, his students of "citizen statistics" learn to analyze public information like the federal budget and corporate reports. Such courses, Hacker argues, are a remedy for the numerical illiteracy of adults who have completed high-level math like algebra but are unable to calculate the price of, say, a carpet by area.

P6Hacker's argument has met with opposition from other math educators who say what's needed is to help students develop a better relationship with math earlier, rather than teaching them less math altogether.

P7Maria Droujkova is a founder of Natural Math, and has taught basic calculus concepts to 5-year-olds. For Droujkova, high-level math is important, and what it could use in American classrooms is an injection of childlike wonder.

P8"Make mathematics more available," Droujkova says. "Redesign it so it's more accessible to more kinds of people: young children, adults who worry about it, adults who may have had bad experiences."

P9Pamela Harris, a lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin, has a similar perspective. Harris says that American education is suffering from an epidemic of "fake math"—an emphasis on rote memorization(死记硬背) of formulas and steps, rather than an understanding of how math can influence the ways we see the world.

P10Andrew Hacker, for the record, remains skeptical.

P11"I'm going to leave it to those who are in mathematics to work out the ways to make their subject interesting and exciting so students want to take it," Hacker says. "All that I ask is that alternatives be offered instead of putting all of us on the road to calculus."

46.
What does the author say about ordinary Americans?
A)They struggle to solve math problems.
B)They think math is a complex subject.
C)They find high-level math of little use.
D)They work hard to learn high-level math.

C(细节题)

题干 What does the author say about ordinary Americans?

What does the author say,介词短语 about ordinary Americans 限定 say 的话题范围,结构平铺直叙,无陷阱。

P1

While human achievements in mathematics continue to reach new levels of complexity, many of us who aren't mathematicians at heart (or engineers by trade) may struggle to remember the last time we used calculus(微积分).

They struggle to solve math problems.

They think math is a complex subject.

    • many of us who aren't mathematicians at heart (or engineers by trade) may struggle to remember the last time we used calculusThey find high-level math of little use.

They find high-level math of little use.

They work hard to learn high-level math. 说普通人努力学高等数学,但原文 struggle to remember the last time we used calculus 表达的是"几乎用不上",逻辑方向相反。

47.
What is the general complaint about America's math education according to Hacker?
A)America is not doing as well as China.
B)Math professors are not doing a good job.
C)It doesn't help students develop their literacy.
D)There has hardly been any innovation for years.

A(细节题)

What is the general complaint,介词短语 about America's math education 限定话题,状语 according to Hacker 限定信息来源,三层修饰但语序自然。

P4

We hear on all sides that we're not teaching enough mathematics, and the Chinese are running rings around us.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • the Chinese are running rings around usAmerica is not doing as well as China.

America is not doing as well as China.

Math professors are not doing a good job.

There has hardly been any innovation for years.

48.
What does Andrew Hacker's Numeracy 101 aim to do?
A)Allow students to learn high-level math step by step.
B)Enable students to make practical use of basic math.
C)Lay a solid foundation for advanced math studies.
D)Help students to develop their analytical abilities.

B(细节题)

题干 What does Andrew Hacker's Numeracy 101 aim to do?

What does Andrew Hacker's Numeracy 101 aim to do,所有格 Andrew Hacker's 修饰 Numeracy 101,结构无陷阱。

P5

Such courses, Hacker argues, are a remedy for the numerical illiteracy of adults who have completed high-level math like algebra but are unable to calculate the price of, say, a carpet by area.

Allow students to learn high-level math step by step. 让学生循序渐进学高等数学;但 Hacker 在 advanced algebra and other higher-level math should be cut 主张删高等数学,Numeracy 101 是高等数学之外的 alternative,不可能 step by step 学高等数学。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • are a remedy for the numerical illiteracy of adults who have completed high-level math like algebra but are unable to calculate the price of, say, a carpet by areaEnable students to make practical use of basic math.

Enable students to make practical use of basic math.

Lay a solid foundation for advanced math studies.

Help students to develop their analytical abilities. 把 learn to analyze public information like the federal budget 里的 analyze 直接抓出做成"培养分析能力",但课程的真正目的是 a remedy for the numerical illiteracy——治数字盲、让人会用基本数学,分析公共信息只是手段而非目的本身。

49.
What does Maria Droujkova suggest math teachers do in class?
A)Make complex concepts easy to understand.
B)Start teaching children math at an early age.
C)Help children work wonders with calculus.
D)Try to arouse students' curiosity in math.

Maria Droujkova

A(细节题)

题干 What does Maria Droujkova suggest math teachers do

What does Maria Droujkova suggest,宾语从句 math teachers do in class 省略了从属连词 that, math teachers 是宾从主语、do 是谓语;考生若没看出这是宾语从句,可能把 in class 错挂到 suggest 上。

P8

Make mathematics more available. Redesign it so it's more accessible to more kinds of people: young children, adults who worry about it, adults who may have had bad experiences.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • Redesign it so it's more accessible to more kinds of people: young children, adults who worry about it, adults who may have had bad experiencesMake complex concepts easy to understand.

Make complex concepts easy to understand.

Start teaching children math at an early age. Redesign it ... more accessible to more kinds of people,对象包括儿童和各种成人,不限于"早教孩子"。

Help children work wonders with calculus.

Try to arouse students' curiosity in math.

50.
What does Pamela Harris think should be the goal of math education?
A)To enable learners to understand the world better.
B)To help learners to tell fake math from real math.
C)To broaden Americans' perspectives on math.
D)To exert influence on world development.

Pamela Harris

C(细节题)

题干 What does Pamela Harris think should be the goal of math education?

What does Pamela Harris think, think 后嵌套主语从句 should be the goal of math education, what 同时充当从句的表语;句式有点绕,但语义指向明确——找 Harris 认为数学教育的目标。

P9

Harris says that American education is suffering from an epidemic of "fake math"—an emphasis on rote memorization(死记硬背) of formulas and steps, rather than an understanding of how math can influence the ways we see the world.

To enable learners to understand the world better.

To help learners to tell fake math from real math.

    • an understanding of how math can influence the ways we see the worldTo broaden Americans' perspectives on math.

To broaden Americans' perspectives on math.

To exert influence on world development. 把 influence the ways we see the world(影响"看世界的方式")夸张成"影响世界发展"——influence 的宾语由 ways we see the world(认知层面)被偷换成 world development(现实层面),推过了头。
