Section II Part A (1)
Directions:
Read the following four texts. Answer the questions after each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on the ANSWER SHEET. (40 points)
Text 1
P1Of all the changes that have taken place in English-language newspapers during the past quarter-century, perhaps the most far-reaching has been the inexorable decline in the scope and seriousness of their arts coverage.

P2It is difficult to the point of impossibility for the average reader under the age of forty to imagine a time when high-quality arts criticism could be found in most big-city newspapers. Yet a considerable number of the most significant collections of criticism published in the 20th century consisted in large part of newspaper reviews. To read such books today is to marvel at the fact that their learned contents were once deemed suitable for publication in general-circulation dailies.

P3We are even farther removed from the unfocused newspaper reviews published in England between the turn of the 20th century and the eve of World War II, at a time when newsprint was dirt-cheap and stylish arts criticism was considered an ornament to the publications in which it appeared. In those far-off days, it was taken for granted that the critics of major papers would write in detail and at length about the events they covered. Theirs was a serious business, and even those reviewers who wore their learning lightly, like George Bernard Shaw and Ernest Newman, could be trusted to know what they were about. These men believed in journalism as a calling, and were proud to be published in the daily press. "So few authors have brains enough or literary gift enough to keep their own end up in journalism," Newman wrote, "that I am tempted to define 'journalism' as 'a term of contempt applied by writers who are not read to writers who are'."

P4Unfortunately, these critics are virtually forgotten. Neville Cardus, who wrote for the Manchester Guardian from 1917 until shortly before his death in 1975, is now known solely as a writer of essays on the game of cricket. During his lifetime, though, he was also one of England's foremost classical-music critics, and a stylist so widely admired that his Autobiography (1947) became a best-seller. He was knighted in 1967, the first music critic to be so honored. Yet only one of his books is now in print, and his vast body of writings on music is unknown save to specialists.

P5Is there any chance that Cardus's criticism will enjoy a revival? The prospect seems remote. Journalistic tastes had changed long before his death, and postmodern readers have little use for the richly upholstered Vicwardian prose in which he specialized. Moreover, the amateur tradition in music criticism has been in headlong retreat.

21.
It is indicated in Paragraphs 1 and 2 that____
[ A ]arts criticism has disappeared from big-city newspapers.
[ B ]English-language newspapers used to carry more arts reviews.
[ C ]high-quality newspapers retain a large body of readers.
[ D ]young readers doubt the suitability of criticism on dailies.

B(细节题)

题干 It is indicated in Paragraphs 1 and

It is indicated in Paragraphs 1 and 2 that ____,形式主语 it + 被动 is indicated + that 从句留白。

P2

It is difficult to the point of impossibility for the average reader under the age of forty to imagine a time when high-quality arts criticism could be found in most big-city newspapers.

arts criticism has disappeared from big-city newspapers 把原文的 decline 拔高成 disappeared,但 decline in the scope and seriousness 仅说下降,并未说完全消失。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • a time when high-quality arts criticism could be found in most big-city newspapersEnglish-language newspapers used to carry more arts reviews
    • the inexorable decline in the scope and seriousness of their arts coveragemore arts reviews

    B 项同时承接了 P1 的 decline 和 P2 的 a time when... could be found 这条今昔对比主线,是定位句最克制的客观转述。

high-quality newspapers retain a large body of readers

young readers doubt the suitability of criticism on dailies

22.
Newspaper reviews in England before World War II were characterized by____
[ A ]free themes.
[ B ]casual style.
[ C ]elaborate layout.
[ D ]radical viewpoints.

A(细节题)

Newspaper reviews in England before World War II were characterized by ____,主干 reviews were characterized by ___;两个介词短语 in England / before World War II 是后置修饰主语。

P3

We are even farther removed from the unfocused newspaper reviews published in England between the turn of the 20th century and the eve of World War II, at a time when newsprint was dirt-cheap and stylish arts criticism was considered an ornament to the publications in which it appeared. In those far-off days, it was taken for granted that the critics of major papers would write in detail and at length about the events they covered.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • the unfocused newspaper reviewsfree themes
    • write in detail and at length about the events they coveredfree themes

elaborate layout 指'精致的版面布局',但 an ornament to the publications 谈的是评论本身是出版物的装饰,并非排版精致;layout 在原文没有任何依据。

23.
Which of the following would Shaw and Newman most probably agree on?
[ A ]It is writers' duty to fulfill journalistic goals.
[ B ]It is contemptible for writers to be journalists.
[ C ]Writers are likely to be tempted into journalism.
[ D ]Not all writers are capable of journalistic writing.

D(推断题)

题干 Which of the following would Shaw and Newman most probably agree on?

Which of the following would Shaw and Newman most probably agree on?,疑问主语 Which + 情态动词 would + 主语 Shaw and Newman + 谓语 agree on。

P3

"So few authors have brains enough or literary gift enough to keep their own end up in journalism," Newman wrote, "that I am tempted to define 'journalism' as 'a term of contempt applied by writers who are not read to writers who are".

It is writers' duty to fulfill journalistic goals 把 These men believed in journalism as a calling 的'把新闻当作天职'拔高成'所有作家都有义务做新闻';believed in 与 duty 不等值。

It is contemptible for writers to be journalists 直陈'作家做新闻是可耻的',但 a term of contempt applied by writers who are not read to writers who are 的语义恰恰相反——是没人读的作家用 'journalism' 来贬低有人读的作家,作者揭这个事实正是反讽。

Writers are likely to be tempted into journalism 把 I am tempted to define

    • So few authors have brains enough or literary gift enough to keep their own end up in journalismNot all writers are capable of journalistic writing

Newman 是直接说话者;Shaw 与 Newman 同在 like George Bernard Shaw and Ernest Newman, could be trusted to know what they were about 一句中被并列为'懂行的评论家',所以 Newman 这句感慨可视为他们共享的从业经验——并非所有作家都能写好新闻。

24.
What can be learned about Cardus according to the last two paragraphs?
[ A ]His music criticism may not appeal to readers today.
[ B ]His reputation as a music critic has long been in dispute.
[ C ]His style caters largely to modern specialists.
[ D ]His writings fail to follow the amateur tradition.

A(推断题)

题干 What can be learned about Cardus according to the last two paragraphs?

What can be learned about Cardus according to the last two paragraphs?,疑问代词 What + 情态 can + 被动 be learned + 介短 about Cardus + according to 介短作状语;无难点。

P5

Journalistic tastes had changed long before his death, and postmodern readers have little use for the richly upholstered Vicwardian prose in which he specialized. Moreover, the amateur tradition in music criticism has been in headlong retreat.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • postmodern readers have little use for the richly upholstered Vicwardian prose in which he specializedHis music criticism may not appeal to readers today
    • Is there any chance that Cardus's criticism will enjoy a revival? The prospect seems remote. His music criticism may not appeal to readers today

His reputation as a music critic has long been in dispute 称其声誉长期有争议,但 P4 显示 Cardus 生前被 widely admired、1967 年首位被封爵的乐评家;今天则是 unknown save to specialists(被遗忘),不是被争议。

His style caters largely to modern specialists 称其文风迎合现代专家,但 his vast body of writings on music is unknown save to specialists 与 postmodern readers have little use for the richly upholstered Vicwardian prose 合起来说的是:今天只有专家还读他,并不是他刻意去迎合现代专家——caters to 是有意取悦,与原文'被动地只剩专家会读'方向相反。

His writings fail to follow the amateur tradition 说他没有遵循业余传统;但 the amateur tradition in music criticism has been in headlong retreat 谈的是这一传统整体在退潮,并未说 Cardus 个人偏离它,反而 P4 暗示他正属于这一传统的代表。

25.
What would be the best title for the text?
[ A ]Newspapers of the Good Old Days
[ B ]The Lost Horizon in Newspapers
[ C ]Mournful Decline of Journalism
[ D ]Prominent Critics in Memory

B(主旨题)

题干 What would be the best title for the text?

What would be the best title for the text?,主语 What + would be + 表语 the best title + 介短 for the text。

    Newspapers of the Good Old Days

    • the inexorable decline in the scope and seriousness of their arts coverageThe Lost Horizon in Newspapers
    • The prospect seems remoteThe Lost Horizon in Newspapers

Mournful Decline of Journalism

    Prominent Critics in Memory
