Text 1
P1France, which prides itself as the global innovator of fashion, has decided its fashion industry has lost an absolute right to define physical beauty for women. Its lawmakers gave preliminary approval last week to a law that would make it a crime to employ ultra-thin models on runways. The parliament also agreed to ban websites that "incite excessive thinness" by promoting extreme dieting.

P2Such measures have a couple of uplifting motives. They suggest beauty should not be defined by looks that end up impinging on health. That's a start. And the ban on ultra-thin models seems to go beyond protecting models from starving themselves to death – as some have done. It tells the fashion industry that it must take responsibility for the signal it sends women, especially teenage girls, about the social tape-measure they must use to determine their individual worth.

P3The bans, if fully enforced, would suggest to women (and many men) that they should not let others be arbiters of their beauty. And perhaps faintly, they hint that people should look to intangible qualities like character and intellect rather than dieting their way to size zero or wasp-waist physiques.

P4The French measures, however, rely too much on severe punishment to change a culture that still regards beauty as skin-deep – and bone-showing. Under the law, using a fashion model that does not meet a government-defined index of body mass could result in a $85,000 fine and six months in prison.

P5The fashion industry knows it has an inherent problem in focusing on material adornment and idealized body types. In Denmark, the United States, and a few other countries, it is trying to set voluntary standards for models and fashion images that rely more on peer pressure for enforcement.

P6In contrast to France's actions, Denmark's fashion industry agreed last month on rules and sanctions regarding the age, health, and other characteristics of models. The newly revised Danish Fashion Ethical Charter clearly states: "We are aware of and take responsibility for the impact the fashion industry has on body ideals, especially on young people." The charter's main tool of enforcement is to deny access for designers and modeling agencies to Copenhagen Fashion Week (CFW), which is run by the Danish Fashion Institute. But in general it relies on a name-and-shame method of compliance.

P7Relying on ethical persuasion rather than law to address the misuse of body ideals may be the best step. Even better would be to help elevate notions of beauty beyond the material standards of a particular industry.

21.
According to the first paragraph, what would happen in France?
[ A ]Physical beauty would be redefined.
[ B ]New runways would be constructed.
[ C ]Websites about dieting would thrive.
[ D ]The fashion industry would decline.

A(细节题)

According to the first paragraph, what would happen in France?

According to the first paragraph, what would happen in France?

P1

Its lawmakers gave preliminary approval last week to a law that would make it a crime to employ ultra-thin models on runways. The parliament also agreed to ban websites that "incite excessive thinness" by promoting extreme dieting.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • France, which prides itself as the global innovator of fashion, has decided its fashion industry has lost an absolute right to define physical beauty for womenPhysical beauty would be redefined

Physical beauty would be redefined

New runways would be constructed

Websites about dieting would thrive

The fashion industry would decline

22.
The phrase "impinging on" (Line 2, Para. 2) is closest in meaning to____
[ A ]indicating the state of.
[ B ]heightening the value of.
[ C ]losing faith in.
[ D ]doing harm to.

  • A) 表明……
D(词义句意题)

The phrase "impinging on" (Line 2, Para. 2) is closest in meaning to

The phrase "impinging on" (Line 2, Para. 2) is closest in meaning to 是一句结构平铺的陈述句作题干,主语是被引短语,谓语 is closest in meaning to 后接选项作宾语。

P2

They suggest beauty should not be defined by looks that end up impinging on health.

indicating the state of 表 "表明...

heightening the value of 表 "提升...

losing faith in 意为 "对...

    • looks that end up impinging on healthdoing harm to

上下文 end up 与 starving themselves to death 一同框定 impinging on 必带负面后果,doing harm to 与之对齐。

23.
Which of the following is true of the fashion industry?
[ A ]The French measures have already failed.
[ B ]Its inherent problems are getting worse.
[ C ]Models are no longer under peer pressure.
[ D ]New standards are being set in Denmark.

D(细节题)

Which of the following is true of the fashion industry?

Which of the following is true of the fashion industry? which 引导的特殊疑问句,is true of 后接对象。

P5

In Denmark, the United States, and a few other countries, it is trying to set voluntary standards for models and fashion images that rely more on peer pressure for enforcement.

原文只对法国措施提出批评 rely too much on severe punishment,但从未说 French measures have already failed——"已经失败" 是凭空升级。

The fashion industry knows it has an inherent problem

原文 rely more on peer pressure for enforcement 明示 "更依赖同行压力",Models are no longer under peer pressure

    • In Denmark ... it is trying to set voluntary standards for models and fashion imagesNew standards are being set in Denmark
    • Denmark's fashion industry agreed last month on rules and sanctionsNew standards are being set in Denmark

New standards are being set in Denmark

24.
A designer is most likely to be rejected by CFW for____
[ A ]pursuing perfect physical conditions.
[ B ]caring too much about models' character.
[ C ]showing little concern for health factors.
[ D ]setting a high age threshold for models.

C(细节题)

A designer is most likely to be rejected by CFW for____ 问 "因什么原因被拒",对应原文里 CFW 拒绝设计师的具体条件,是细节题。

A designer is most likely to be rejected by CFW for____ 是含空位的陈述句,主语 A designer,谓语 is most likely to be rejected 为情态+被动语态,by CFW 表施动者,for 引出原因介词短语,空位填名词性成分;理解关键是被动结构的施动方向——CFW 是 "做拒绝" 的一方。

P6

Denmark's fashion industry agreed last month on rules and sanctions regarding the age, health, and other characteristics of models. ... The charter's main tool of enforcement is to deny access for designers and modeling agencies to Copenhagen Fashion Week (CFW), which is run by the Danish Fashion Institute.

原文 character 出现在评论作者立场处,不属于 CFW 拒入条件;而 caring too much about models' character 是 "过度关注品格",原文从未提此为问题。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • rules and sanctions regarding the age, health, and other characteristics of modelsshowing little concern for health factors

章程规定 health 是核心规制对象,违反者被 deny access;故 showing little concern for health factors 正是被 CFW 拒之门外的合理原因。

25.
Which of the following may be the best title of the text?
[ A ]The Great Threats to the Fashion Industry
[ B ]Just Another Round of Struggle for Beauty
[ C ]A Dilemma for the Starving Models in France
[ D ]A Challenge to the Fashion Industry's Body Ideals

D(主旨题)

Which of the following may be the best title of the text?

Which of the following may be the best title of the text? which 引导的特殊疑问句,情态 may 表 "可能" 弱化语气,of the text 限定 title 的范围是 "本文整篇"。

Just Another Round of Struggle for Beauty 把全文降格为 "又一次美的较量",既未点出 "时尚业" 与 "体型理想",又用 Just Another 贬抑作者立场的严肃性。

A Dilemma for the Starving Models in France 只截取第 2 段 starving themselves to death 与第 1 段 France 一隅,丢弃丹麦对比与作者总结,是典型局部代全文。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • focusing on material adornment and idealized body typesA Challenge to the Fashion Industry's Body Ideals
    • Relying on ethical persuasion rather than law to address the misuse of body ideals may be the best stepA Challenge to the Fashion Industry's Body Ideals

A Challenge to the Fashion Industry's Body Ideals
