P1It is said that in England death is pressing, in Canada inevitable and in California optional. Small wonder. Americans' life expectancy has nearly doubled over the past century. Failing hips can be replaced, clinical depression controlled, cataracts removed in a 30-minute surgical procedure. Such advances offer the aging population a quality of life that was unimaginable when I entered medicine 50 years ago. But not even a great health-care system can cure death—and our failure to confront that reality now threatens this greatness of ours.

P2Death is normal; we are genetically programmed to disintegrate and perish, even under ideal conditions. We all understand that at some level, yet as medical consumers we treat death as a problem to be solved. Shielded by third-party payers from the cost of our care, we demand everything that can possibly be done for us, even if it's useless. The most obvious example is late-stage cancer care. Physicians—frustrated by their inability to cure the disease and fearing loss of hope in the patient—too often offer aggressive treatment far beyond what is scientifically justified.

P3In 1950, the US spent $12.7 billion on health care. In 2002, the cost will be $1,540 billion. Anyone can see this trend is unsustainable. Yet few seem willing to try to reverse it. Some scholars conclude that a government with finite resources should simply stop paying for medical care that sustains life beyond a certain age—say 83 or so. Former Colorado governor Richard Lamm has been quoted as saying that the old and infirm "have a duty to die and get out of the way", so that younger, healthier people can realize their potential.

P4I would not go that far. Energetic people now routinely work through their 60s and beyond, and remain dazzlingly productive. At 78, Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone jokingly claims to be 53. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor is in her 70s, and former surgeon general C. Everett Koop chairs an Internet start-up in his 80s. These leaders are living proof that prevention works and that we can manage the health problems that come naturally with age. As a mere 68-year-old, I wish to age as productively as they have.

P5Yet there are limits to what a society can spend in this pursuit. As a physician, I know the most costly and dramatic measures may be ineffective and painful. I also know that people in Japan and Sweden, countries that spend far less on medical care, have achieved longer, healthier lives than we have. As a nation, we may be overfunding the quest for unlikely cures while underfunding research on humbler therapies that could improve people's lives.

36.
What is implied in the first sentence?
[ A ]Americans are better prepared for death than other people.
[ B ]Americans enjoy a higher life quality than ever before.
[ C ]Americans are over-confident of their medical technology.
[ D ]Americans take a vain pride in their long life expectancy.

C(推断题)

题干 What is implied in the first sentence?

What is implied in the first sentence? 是一个被动语态的特殊疑问句,主干是 What is implied,介词短语 in the first sentence 限定 imply 的发生位置;句子直白,无陷阱。

P1

It is said that in England death is pressing, in Canada inevitable and in California optional. Small wonder. Americans' life expectancy has nearly doubled over the past century.

Americans are better prepared for death than other people

Americans enjoy a higher life quality than ever before Such advances offer the aging population a quality of life that was unimaginable

    • in California optionalover-confident of their medical technology
    • Small wonder. Americans' life expectancy has nearly doubledover-confident

Americans take a vain pride in their long life expectancy

37.
The author uses the example of cancer patients to show that____.
[ A ]medical resources are often wasted
[ B ]doctors are helpless against fatal diseases
[ C ]some treatments are too aggressive
[ D ]medical costs are becoming unaffordable

A(例证目的题)

题干 The author uses the example of cancer patients to show that____.

The author uses the example of cancer patients to show that____. 是主谓宾结构,宾语 the example of cancer patients 被不定式 to show 修饰目的;选项填入 that 引导的宾语从句作 show 的宾语。

P2

Shielded by third-party payers from the cost of our care, we demand everything that can possibly be done for us, even if it's useless. The most obvious example is late-stage cancer care. Physicians—frustrated by their inability to cure the disease and fearing loss of hope in the patient—too often offer aggressive treatment far beyond what is scientifically justified.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • we demand everything that can possibly be done for us, even if it's uselessmedical resources are often wasted
    • offer aggressive treatment far beyond what is scientifically justifiedwasted

预判的“医疗资源被过度索取与浪费”与 medical resources are often wasted 在 demand everything…even if useless 与 far beyond what is scientifically justified 两处文本上同时落地,故锁 A。

doctors are helpless against fatal diseases Physicians—frustrated by their inability to cure the disease

some treatments are too aggressive 与原文 offer aggressive treatment far beyond what is scientifically justified 字面高度重合,但 aggressive 本身只是手段描述,不是论点;作者举癌症例子是要说“资源浪费”,不是单单说“治疗太激进”。

medical costs are becoming unaffordable Anyone can see this trend is unsustainable

38.
The author's attitude toward Richard Lamm's remark is one of____.
[ A ]strong disapproval
[ B ]reserved consent
[ C ]slight contempt
[ D ]enthusiastic support

B(态度题)

题干 The author's attitude toward Richard Lamm's remark is one of____.

The author's attitude toward Richard Lamm's remark is one of____. 主干 The author's attitude is one of ___,介词短语 toward Richard Lamm's remark 修饰 attitude,限定态度的对象。

P3

Former Colorado governor Richard Lamm has been quoted as saying that the old and infirm "have a duty to die and get out of the way", so that younger, healthier people can realize their potential. I would not go that far.

I would not go that far

    • I would not go that farreserved consent
    • there are limits to what a society can spend in this pursuitconsent

I would not go that far

I would not go that far

39.
In contrast to the US, Japan and Sweden are funding their medical care____.
[ A ]more flexibly
[ B ]more extravagantly
[ C ]more cautiously
[ D ]more reasonably

  • A) 更灵活
  • B) 更奢侈
  • C) 更谨慎
  • D) 更合理
D(细节题)

题干 In contrast to the US, Japan and Sweden are funding their medical care____.

In contrast to the US, Japan and Sweden are funding their medical care____. In contrast to the US 作状语;主句 Japan and Sweden are funding their medical care

P5

I also know that people in Japan and Sweden, countries that spend far less on medical care, have achieved longer, healthier lives than we have.

more extravagantly 是“更奢侈/挥霍”,与原文 spend far less on medical care(花得远少)正相反。

    • spend far less on medical care, have achieved longer, healthier livesmore reasonably

40.
The text intends to express the idea that____.
[ A ]medicine will further prolong people's lives
[ B ]life beyond a certain limit is not worth living
[ C ]death should be accepted as a fact of life
[ D ]excessive demands increase the cost of health care

C(主旨题)

题干 The text intends to express the idea that____.

The text intends to express the idea that____. 主干 The text intends to express the idea, that

medicine will further prolong people's lives 说“医学将进一步延长寿命”,正是作者全篇批判的乐观态度——首段讽刺 in California optional、第二段批 we demand everything…even if it's useless、末段说 overfunding the quest for unlikely cures 全在反对该方向。

life beyond a certain limit is not worth living I would not go that far

    • not even a great health-care system can cure deathdeath should be accepted as a fact of life
    • we treat death as a problem to be solveddeath should be accepted as a fact of life
    • Death is normal; we are genetically programmed to disintegrate and perisha fact of life

excessive demands increase the cost of health care
