Text 4
P1In 1784, five years before he became president of the United States, George Washington, 52, was nearly toothless. So he hired a dentist to transplant nine teeth into his jaw – having extracted them from the mouths of his slaves.

P2That's a far different image from the cherry-tree-chopping George most people remember from their history books. But recently, many historians have begun to focus on the role slavery played in the lives of the founding generation. They have been spurred in part by DNA evidence made available in 1998, which almost certainly proved Thomas Jefferson had fathered at least one child with his slave Sally Hemings. And only over the past 30 years have scholars examined history from the bottom up. Works of several historians reveal the moral compromises made by the nation's early leaders and the fragile nature of the country's infancy. More significantly, they argue that many of the Founding Fathers knew slavery was wrong – and yet most did little to fight it.

P3More than anything, the historians say, the founders were hampered by the culture of their time. While Washington and Jefferson privately expressed distaste for slavery, they also understood that it was part of the political and economic bedrock of the country they helped to create.

P4For one thing, the South could not afford to part with its slaves. Owning slaves was "like having a large bank account," says Wiencek, author of An Imperfect God: George Washington, His Slaves, and the Creation of America. The southern states would not have signed the Constitution without protections for the "peculiar institution," including a clause that counted a slave as three fifths of a man for purposes of congressional representation.

An Imperfect God: George Washington, His Slaves, and the Creation of America一书的作者Wiencek说,拥有奴隶"就像拥有一个巨额银行账户"。

P5And the statesmen's political lives depended on slavery. The three-fifths formula handed Jefferson his narrow victory in the presidential election of 1800 by inflating the votes of the southern states in the Electoral College. Once in office, Jefferson extended slavery with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803; the new land was carved into 13 states, including three slave states.

P6Still, Jefferson freed Hemings's children – though not Hemings herself or his approximately 150 other slaves. Washington, who had begun to believe that all men were created equal after observing the bravery of the black soldiers during the Revolutionary War, overcame the strong opposition of his relatives to grant his slaves their freedom in his will. Only a decade earlier, such an act would have required legislative approval in Virginia.

36.
George Washington's dental surgery is mentioned to____
[ A ]show the primitive medical practice in the past.
[ B ]demonstrate the cruelty of slavery in his days.
[ C ]stress the role of slaves in the U.S. history.
[ D ]reveal some unknown aspect of his life.

D(例证目的题)

Q36 是一个被动语态加不定式的不完整陈述,is mentioned to 后接选项构成完整句子,主干就是 "dental surgery is mentioned to do something",结构平铺直叙、无陷阱。

P2

That's a far different image from the cherry-tree-chopping George most people remember from their history books. But recently, many historians have begun to focus on the role slavery played in the lives of the founding generation.

选项 demonstrate the cruelty of slavery in his days 把"从奴隶口中拔牙"直接等同于"展示奴隶制残酷",但作者紧接的评论句 That's a far different image

    • That's a far different image from the cherry-tree-chopping George most people remember from their history booksreveal some unknown aspect of his life

预判"揭示鲜为人知的一面"与 reveal some unknown aspect of his life 在语义上完全重合,直接锁定 D。

37.
We may infer from the second paragraph that____
[ A ]DNA technology has been widely applied to history research.
[ B ]in its early days the U.S. was confronted with delicate situations.
[ C ]historians deliberately made up some stories of Jefferson's life.
[ D ]political compromises are easily found throughout the U.S. history.

B(推断题)

We may infer from the second paragraph that 是推断题的标准措辞。

P2

Works of several historians reveal the moral compromises made by the nation's early leaders and the fragile nature of the country's infancy.

DNA technology has been widely applied to history research DNA evidence made available in 1998, which almost certainly proved Thomas Jefferson

    • the fragile nature of the country's infancyin its early days the U.S. was confronted with delicate situations

选项 historians deliberately made up some stories of Jefferson's life 中的 "made up"(编造)与原文 almost certainly proved(几乎确凿地证明)方向完全相反——原文说 DNA 证明了杰斐逊确有此事,并非历史学家凭空编造。

选项 political compromises are easily found throughout the U.S. history 把 the nation's early leaders 的"早期"扩张到 throughout the U.S. history 的"整个美国历史";原文谈的只是国父们的妥协,不能推及整个美国史。

38.
What do we learn about Thomas Jefferson?
[ A ]His political view changed his attitude towards slavery.
[ B ]His status as a father made him free the child slaves.
[ C ]His attitude towards slavery was complex.
[ D ]His affair with a slave stained his prestige.

C(细节题)

What do we learn about Thomas Jefferson?

P6

Still, Jefferson freed Hemings's children – though not Hemings herself or his approximately 150 other slaves.

His political view changed his attitude towards slavery

His status as a father made him free the child slaves

    • Jefferson privately expressed distaste for slaveryHis attitude towards slavery was complex
    • Jefferson extended slavery with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803; the new land was carved into 13 states, including three slave statesHis attitude towards slavery was complex
    • Jefferson freed Hemings's children – though not Hemings herself or his approximately 150 other slavesHis attitude towards slavery was complex

His affair with a slave stained his prestige 中的 stained his prestige(玷污了他的声望)在原文找不到任何评价依据;P2 只说 DNA 证明了亲子关系,并未评价此事对他声望的影响。

39.
Which of the following is true according to the text?
[ A ]Some Founding Fathers benefit politically from slavery.
[ B ]Slaves in the old days did not have the right to vote.
[ C ]Slaves owners usually had large savings accounts.
[ D ]Slavery was regarded as a peculiar institution.

A(细节题)

Which of the following is true according to the text?

Q39 主干 "Which is true according to the text",无从句、无否定,结构平铺直叙。

P5

And the statesmen's political lives depended on slavery. The three-fifths formula handed Jefferson his narrow victory in the presidential election of 1800 by inflating the votes of the southern states in the Electoral College.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • The three-fifths formula handed Jefferson his narrow victory in the presidential election of 1800 by inflating the votes of the southern states in the Electoral CollegeSome Founding Fathers benefit politically from slavery

Slaves in the old days did not have the right to vote 看似常识为真,但原文从未讨论奴隶投票权——counted a slave as three fifths of a man for purposes of congressional representation 谈的是奴隶在国会代表权计算中被算作五分之三,是"代表权计算单位",不是"投票权",二者不可混。

Slavery was regarded as a peculiar institution 中 "was regarded" 给出一个被动评价;原文 protections for the "peculiar institution" 把 "peculiar institution" 加引号——这是南方人为奴隶制起的婉称,并非全社会普遍把奴隶制看作"特殊制度"。

40.
Washington's decision to free slaves originated from his____
[ A ]moral considerations.
[ B ]military experience.
[ C ]financial conditions.
[ D ]political stand.

B(细节题)

Washington's decision to free slaves originated from his____,空格在 his 之后,要求填名词短语,结构无陷阱。

P6

Washington, who had begun to believe that all men were created equal after observing the bravery of the black soldiers during the Revolutionary War, overcame the strong opposition of his relatives to grant his slaves their freedom in his will.

    • after observing the bravery of the black soldiers during the Revolutionary Warmilitary experience

Washington and Jefferson privately expressed distaste for slavery
