Section II Part A (1)
Directions:
Read the following four texts. Answer the questions after each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on the ANSWER SHEET. (40 points)
Text 1
P1The decision of the New York Philharmonic to hire Alan Gilbert as its next music director has been the talk of the classical-music world ever since the sudden announcement of his appointment in 2009. For the most part, the response has been favorable, to say the least. "Hooray! At last!" wrote Anthony Tommasini, a sober-sided classical-music critic.

P2One of the reasons why the appointment came as such a surprise, however, is that Gilbert is comparatively little known. Even Tommasini, who had advocated Gilbert's appointment in the Times, calls him "an unpretentious musician with no air of the formidable conductor about him." As a description of the next music director of an orchestra that has hitherto been led by musicians like Gustav Mahler and Pierre Boulez, that seems likely to have struck at least some Times readers as faint praise.

P3For my part, I have no idea whether Gilbert is a great conductor or even a good one. To be sure, he performs an impressive variety of interesting compositions, but it is not necessary for me to visit Avery Fisher Hall, or anywhere else, to hear interesting orchestral music. All I have to do is to go to my CD shelf, or boot up my computer and download still more recorded music from iTunes.

P4Devoted concertgoers who reply that recordings are no substitute for live performance are missing the point. For the time, attention, and money of the art-loving public, classical instrumentalists must compete not only with opera houses, dance troupes, theater companies, and museums, but also with the recorded performances of the great classical musicians of the 20th century. These recordings are cheap, available everywhere, and very often much higher in artistic quality than today's live performances; moreover, they can be "consumed" at a time and place of the listener's choosing. The widespread availability of such recordings has thus brought about a crisis in the institution of the traditional classical concert.

P5One possible response is for classical performers to program attractive new music that is not yet available on record. Gilbert's own interest in new music has been widely noted: Alex Ross, a classical-music critic, has described him as a man who is capable of turning the Philharmonic into "a markedly different, more vibrant organization." But what will be the nature of that difference? Merely expanding the orchestra's repertoire will not be enough. If Gilbert and the Philharmonic are to succeed, they must first change the relationship between America's oldest orchestra and the new audience it hopes to attract.

21.
We learn from Paragraph 1 that Gilbert's appointment has____
[ A ]incurred criticism.
[ B ]raised suspicion.
[ C ]received acclaim.
[ D ]aroused curiosity.

C(细节题)

We learn from Paragraph 1 that

P1

For the most part, the response has been favorable, to say the least. "Hooray! At last!" wrote Anthony Tommasini, a sober-sided classical-music critic.

    • the response has been favorable, to say the leastreceived acclaim
    • Hooray! At last!received acclaim

22.
Tommasini regards Gilbert as an artist who is____
[ A ]influential.
[ B ]modest.
[ C ]respectable.
[ D ]talented.

B(细节题)

Tommasini regards Gilbert as an artist who is____ 问的是 Tommasini 对 Gilbert 的客观评价,要从原文 Tommasini 的原话里截取并同义改写。

主句 Tommasini regards Gilbert as an artist + 限制性定语从句 who is____,空位补的是表语形容词;无复杂结构。

P2

Even Tommasini, who had advocated Gilbert's appointment in the Times, calls him "an unpretentious musician with no air of the formidable conductor about him."

Gilbert is comparatively little known

    • an unpretentious musicianmodest
    • with no air of the formidable conductor about himmodest

23.
The author believes that the devoted concertgoers____
[ A ]ignore the expenses of live performances.
[ B ]reject most kinds of recorded performances.
[ C ]exaggerate the variety of live performances.
[ D ]overestimate the value of live performances.

D(细节题)

The author believes that the devoted concertgoers____

The author believes that the devoted concertgoers____ 是 believe + that 宾语从句结构,空位是宾语从句的谓语部分,选项均为 V+宾语形式;无陷阱。

P4

Devoted concertgoers who reply that recordings are no substitute for live performance are missing the point.

ignore the expenses of live performances For the time, attention, and money,但谈的是公众资源被各种艺术形式争夺,不是乐迷忽视票价。

reject most kinds of recorded performances

exaggerate the variety of live performances

    • Devoted concertgoers who reply that recordings are no substitute for live performance are missing the point.overestimate the value of live performances
    • For the time, attention, and money of the art-loving public, classical instrumentalists must compete not only with opera houses, dance troupes, theater companies, and museums, but also with the recorded performances of the great classical musicians of the 20th century.overestimate the value of live performances

预判 "高估现场" 与 overestimate the value of live performances 在评判方向、对象、程度上完全吻合,且 over- 前缀正好对应 missing the point 所暗示的 "过分"。

24.
According to the text, which of the following is true of recordings?
[ A ]They are often inferior to live concerts in quality.
[ B ]They are easily accessible to the general public.
[ C ]They help improve the quality of music.
[ D ]They have only covered masterpieces.

B(细节题)

which of the following is true of recordings

According to the text, which of the following is true of recordings? 一个 wh-疑问句,主干是 which…is true of recordings;无复杂修饰。

P4

These recordings are cheap, available everywhere, and very often much higher in artistic quality than today's live performances; moreover, they can be "consumed" at a time and place of the listener's choosing.

They are often inferior to live concerts in quality 说录音质量常低于现场,但原文恰恰说 very often much higher in artistic quality than today's live performances——录音质量常远高于现场。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • available everywhereeasily accessible to the general public
    • cheapeasily accessible to the general public

They help improve the quality of music

They have only covered masterpieces 说录音 "只覆盖了名曲",原文虽提到 the recorded performances of the great classical musicians of the 20th century,但说的是 "伟大演奏家" 的演奏录音,并不限定其曲目只是 masterpieces,且 only 这个绝对化副词原文未提。

25.
Regarding Gilbert's role in revitalizing the Philharmonic, the author feels____
[ A ]doubtful.
[ B ]enthusiastic.
[ C ]confident.
[ D ]puzzled.

  • A) 怀疑
  • B) 热情
  • C) 有信心
  • D) 困惑
A(态度题)

the author feels____ 空位填 doubtful/enthusiastic/confident/puzzled 等情感形容词,本质是判断作者的极性。

Regarding Gilbert's role in revitalizing the Philharmonic, the author feels____ 介词短语 Regarding…

  • A)✓ 正确
    • Merely expanding the orchestra's repertoire will not be enough.doubtful
    • If Gilbert and the Philharmonic are to succeed, they must first change the relationship between America's oldest orchestra and the new audience it hopes to attract.doubtful

enthusiastic 表达 "热情洋溢",但作者在末段连用 not be enough 与 must first change 给 Gilbert 加难度,显然没有给出热情支持。
