Text 3
P1In the idealized version of how science is done, facts about the world are waiting to be observed and collected by objective researchers who use the scientific method to carry out their work. But in the everyday practice of science, discovery frequently follows an ambiguous and complicated route. We aim to be objective, but we cannot escape the context of our unique life experiences. Prior knowledge and interests influence what we experience, what we think our experiences mean, and the subsequent actions we take. Opportunities for misinterpretation, error, and self-deception abound.

P2Consequently, discovery claims should be thought of as protoscience. Similar to newly staked mining claims, they are full of potential. But it takes collective scrutiny and acceptance to transform a discovery claim into a mature discovery. This is the credibility process, through which the individual researcher's me, here, now becomes the community's anyone, anywhere, anytime. Objective knowledge is the goal, not the starting point.

P3Once a discovery claim becomes public, the discoverer receives intellectual credit. But, unlike with mining claims, the community takes control of what happens next. Within the complex social structure of the scientific community, researchers make discoveries; editors and reviewers act as gatekeepers by controlling the publication process; other scientists use the new finding to suit their own purposes; and finally, the public (including other scientists) receives the new discovery and possibly accompanying technology. As a discovery claim works its way through the community, the interaction and confrontation between shared and competing beliefs about the science and the technology involved transforms an individual's discovery claim into the community's credible discovery.

P4Two paradoxes exist throughout this credibility process. First, scientific work tends to focus on some aspect of prevailing knowledge that is viewed as incomplete or incorrect. Little reward accompanies duplication and confirmation of what is already known and believed. The goal is new-search, not re-search. Not surprisingly, newly published discovery claims and credible discoveries that appear to be important and convincing will always be open to challenge and potential modification or refutation by future researchers. Second, novelty itself frequently provokes disbelief. Nobel Laureate and physiologist Albert Szent-Györgyi once described discovery as "seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought." But thinking what nobody else has thought and telling others what they have missed may not change their views. Sometimes years are required for truly novel discovery claims to be accepted and appreciated.

P5In the end, credibility "happens" to a discovery claim—a process that corresponds to what philosopher Annette Baier has described as the commons of the mind. "We reason together, challenge, revise, and complete each other's reasoning and each other's conceptions of reason."

31.
According to the first paragraph, the process of discovery is characterized by its____
[ A ]uncertainty and complexity.
[ B ]misconception and deceptiveness.
[ C ]logicality and objectivity.
[ D ]systematicness and regularity.

A(细节题)

题干 According to the first paragraph 是 according to 型,且要求归纳 the process of discovery 的特征,属于段落级细节归纳。

主干是 the process of discovery is characterized by its____,过去分词短语作谓语,空格补的是介词 by 的宾语,应是名词性短语;its 提示该名词应是 discovery 本身的属性。

P1

But in the everyday practice of science, discovery frequently follows an ambiguous and complicated route.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • ambiguousuncertainty
    • complicatedcomplexity

Opportunities for misinterpretation, error, and self-deception abound,即「机会很多」,并未把 misconception/deceptiveness 当作 discovery 过程本身的固有特征。

logicality and objectivity 描述的是 the idealized version 那个被作者否定的版本,作者用 But 转折后明确指出现实并非如此。

32.
It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that credibility process requires____
[ A ]strict inspection.
[ B ]shared efforts.
[ C ]individual wisdom.
[ D ]persistent innovation.

B(推断题)

题干 It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that credibility process requires____ 含 inferred,是典型推断题套式。

It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that credibility process requires____ 是 It 作形式主语 + that 从句,重点在 that 后;空格做 requires 的宾语,应是名词性短语。

P2

But it takes collective scrutiny and acceptance to transform a discovery claim into a mature discovery.

    • collective scrutiny and acceptanceshared efforts
    • the community's anyone, anywhere, anytimeshared

individual wisdom 强调个人智慧,而原文恰恰强调 the individual researcher's me, here, now becomes the community's anyone, anywhere, anytime,即要从「个人」走向「群体」,individual 与原文方向相反。

33.
Paragraph 3 shows that a discovery claim becomes credible after it____
[ A ]has attracted the attention of the general public.
[ B ]has been examined by the scientific community.
[ C ]has received recognition from editors and reviewers.
[ D ]has been frequently quoted by peer scientists.

B(细节题)

题干 Paragraph 3 shows that a discovery claim becomes credible after it____ 是 X shows that 型,要求复述段内事实,属细节题。

Paragraph 3 shows that a discovery claim becomes credible after it____:主从结构,that 从句里 after 引导时间状语从句,空格是 after 从句的谓语成分,答案应是动作完成态。

P3

As a discovery claim works its way through the community, the interaction and confrontation between shared and competing beliefs about the science and the technology involved transforms an individual's discovery claim into the community's credible discovery.

the general public 指普通公众,而原文 the public (including other scientists) receives the new discovery 强调公众是「接收方」,且 credible 的转化机制是「社群」做的,不是「公众关注度」决定的。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • works its way through the communityhas been examined by the scientific community
    • the interaction and confrontation between shared and competing beliefsexamined

has been examined by the scientific community 把原文「在科学社群中经过互动与交锋」用「被科学社群审视」精准转述,且包含完成时态对应 after it ____ 的时态需要。

editors and reviewers 只是原文 editors and reviewers act as gatekeepers 提到的若干角色之一,并非 credible 转化的全部主体,把其中一环当全过程。

has been frequently quoted by peer scientists

34.
Albert Szent-Györgyi would most likely agree that____
[ A ]scientific claims will survive challenges.
[ B ]discoveries today inspire future research.
[ C ]efforts to make discoveries are justified.
[ D ]scientific work calls for a critical mind.

Albert Szent-Györgyi

D(推断题)

Albert Szent-Györgyi would most likely agree that____:主语是人名,would agree that 引导宾语从句,空格内填一个完整命题(主谓齐全的从句)。

P4

Nobel Laureate and physiologist Albert Szent-Györgyi once described discovery as "seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought." But thinking what nobody else has thought and telling others what they have missed may not change their views.

scientific claims will survive challenges 的观点来自 newly published discovery claims and credible discoveries ... will always be open to challenge 这一作者本人的陈述,而非 Szent-Györgyi 的引文。

efforts to make discoveries are justified

    • thinking what nobody has thoughta critical mind
    • seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thoughtscientific work calls for

scientific work calls for a critical mind

35.
Which of the following would be the best title of the text?
[ A ]Novelty as an Engine of Scientific Development.
[ B ]Collective Scrutiny in Scientific Discovery.
[ C ]Evolution of Credibility in Doing Science.
[ D ]Challenge to Credibility at the Gate to Science.

C(主旨题)

题干 Which of the following would be the best title of the text?

Which of the following would be the best title of the text?

Novelty as an Engine of Scientific Development

Collective Scrutiny in Scientific Discovery 只对应 collective scrutiny and acceptance 这一环节,未涵盖 P4 的悖论与 P5 的 commons of the mind 等收束内容。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • credibility processCredibility
    • In the end, credibility "happens" to a discovery claimEvolution of Credibility
    • As a discovery claim works its way through the communityin Doing Science

Evolution of Credibility in Doing Science

Challenge to Credibility at the Gate to Science 把 editors and reviewers act as gatekeepers 拆出来当全文主题,且把整体「可信性的形成过程」偷换为「对可信性的挑战」,焦点全错。
