Text 2
P1All around the world, lawyers generate more hostility than the members of any other profession – with the possible exception of journalism. But there are few places where clients have more grounds for complaint than America.

P2During the decade before the economic crisis, spending on legal services in America grew twice as fast as inflation. The best lawyers made skyscrapers-full of money, tempting ever more students to pile into law schools. But most law graduates never get a big-firm job. Many of them instead become the kind of nuisance-lawsuit filer that makes the tort system a costly nightmare.

P3There are many reasons for this. One is the excessive costs of a legal education. There is just one path for a lawyer in most American states: a four-year undergraduate degree in some unrelated subject, then a three-year law degree at one of 200 law schools authorized by the American Bar Association and an expensive preparation for the bar exam. This leaves today's average law-school graduate with $100,000 of debt on top of undergraduate debts. Law-school debt means that they have to work fearsomely hard.

P4Reforming the system would help both lawyers and their customers. Sensible ideas have been around for a long time, but the state-level bodies that govern the profession have been too conservative to implement them. One idea is to allow people to study law as an undergraduate degree. Another is to let students sit for the bar after only two years of law school. If the bar exam is truly a stern enough test for a would-be lawyer, those who can sit it earlier should be allowed to do so. Students who do not need the extra training could cut their debt mountain by a third.

P5The other reason why costs are so high is the restrictive guild-like ownership structure of the business. Except in the District of Columbia, non-lawyers may not own any share of a law firm. This keeps fees high and innovation slow. There is pressure for change from within the profession, but opponents of change among the regulators insist that keeping outsiders out of a law firm isolates lawyers from the pressure to make money rather than serve clients ethically.

P6In fact, allowing non-lawyers to own shares in law firms would reduce costs and improve services to customers, by encouraging law firms to use technology and to employ professional managers to focus on improving firms' efficiency. After all, other countries, such as Australia and Britain, have started liberalizing their legal professions. America should follow.

26.
A lot of students take up law as their profession due to____
[ A ]the growing demand from clients.
[ B ]the increasing pressure of inflation.
[ C ]the prospect of working in big firms.
[ D ]the attraction of financial rewards.

D(细节题)

题干 A lot of students take up law as their profession due to

A lot of students take up law as their profession due to____:主干是 students take up law,as their profession 是 take up 的方式状语,due to 引出原因短语作状语,整句平铺直叙、无陷阱。

P2

The best lawyers made skyscrapers-full of money, tempting ever more students to pile into law schools.

the growing demand from clients 文中只字未提客户需求增加,原文相邻处只有 spending on legal services in America grew twice as fast as inflation,谈的是花费增长而非需求增长,且也未把它与学生选法学挂钩。

原文 spending on legal services in America grew twice as fast as inflation 中 inflation 只是"做对比的参照系",并非吸引学生学法律的原因;the increasing pressure of inflation 把参照对象偷换成驱动力。

原文 most law graduates never get a big-firm job 明说多数毕业生根本进不了大所,the prospect of working in big firms 把"少数人的实际去向"误读成"普遍吸引诱因"。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • The best lawyers made skyscrapers-full of money, tempting ever more students to pile into law schoolsthe attraction of financial rewards

27.
Which of the following adds to the costs of legal education in most American states?
[ A ]Higher tuition fees for undergraduate studies.
[ B ]Receiving training by professional associations.
[ C ]Admissions approval from the bar association.
[ D ]Pursuing a bachelor's degree in another major.

D(细节题)

Which of the following adds to the costs

Which of the following adds to the costs of legal education in most American states?:主语是 Which of the following,谓语 adds to(加剧/推高),介词短语 in most American states 限定范围。注意 add to 不是 add up,意为"增添",非"加起来"。

P3

There is just one path for a lawyer in most American states: a four-year undergraduate degree in some unrelated subject, then a three-year law degree at one of 200 law schools authorized by the American Bar Association and an expensive preparation for the bar exam.

Higher tuition fees for undergraduate studies

原文 an expensive preparation for the bar exam 是"为律师资格考试做备考",Receiving training by professional associations 偷换成"接受专业协会的培训",主语与施动者都不同。

200 law schools authorized by the American Bar Association Admissions approval from the bar association

    • a four-year undergraduate degree in some unrelated subjectPursuing a bachelor's degree in another major

Pursuing a bachelor's degree in another major

28.
Hindrance to the reform of the legal system originates from____
[ A ]the rigid bodies governing the profession.
[ B ]lawyers' and clients' strong resistance.
[ C ]the stern exam for would-be lawyers.
[ D ]non-professionals' sharp criticism.

A(细节题)

Hindrance to the reform of the legal system originates from____:主语 Hindrance to the reform of the legal system(of+of 双层修饰:对法律体制之改革之阻碍),谓语 originates from,空格填名词性短语作宾语。

P4

Sensible ideas have been around for a long time, but the state-level bodies that govern the profession have been too conservative to implement them.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • the state-level bodies that govern the professionthe rigid bodies governing the profession

预判的"州级管理机构太保守"与 the rigid bodies governing the profession 精确对位,rigid 是 too conservative 的标准同义概括,锁定 A。

Reforming the system would help both lawyers and their customers 明说律师和客户都会从改革中受益,根本不是阻力;lawyers' and clients' strong resistance 与原文立场相反。

If the bar exam is truly a stern enough test for a would-be lawyer, those who can sit it earlier should be allowed to do so 中"stern test"是改革派用来支持"提前考"的假设前提,并非阻挡改革的因素,the stern exam for would-be lawyers 张冠李戴。

29.
The guild-like ownership structure is considered "restrictive" partly because it____
[ A ]prevents lawyers from gaining due profits.
[ B ]bans outsiders' involvement in the profession.
[ C ]aggravates the ethical situation in the trade.
[ D ]keeps lawyers from holding law-firm shares.

B(细节题)

The guild-like ownership structure is considered "restrictive" partly because it____:主干是 The structure is considered restrictive, partly because it____ 是原因状语从句,it 指代 The guild-like ownership structure。

P5

Except in the District of Columbia, non-lawyers may not own any share of a law firm.

原文只说 This keeps fees high,即拉高客户付费,并未说律师拿不到应得利润;prevents lawyers from gaining due profits 把方向写反。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • non-lawyers may not own any share of a law firmbans outsiders' involvement in the profession

预判"禁外行进入持股"与 bans outsiders' involvement in the profession 精确对应,且与同段后文 keeping outsiders out of a law firm 反向印证,锁定 B。

原文 opponents of change among the regulators insist that keeping outsiders out of a law firm isolates lawyers from the pressure to make money rather than serve clients ethically 表述的是反对改革者的观点:现状反而保护职业操守;选项 aggravates the ethical situation in the trade 说"恶化",与该陈述方向相反,且把对方观点当成作者结论。

原文 non-lawyers may not own any share of a law firm 说的是非律师不得持股,keeps lawyers from holding law-firm shares 把禁令对象从"非律师"偷换成"律师"。

30.
In this text, the author mainly discusses____
[ A ]the factors that help make a successful lawyer in America.
[ B ]a problem in America's legal profession and solutions to it.
[ C ]the role of undergraduate studies in America's legal education.
[ D ]flawed ownership of America's law firms and its causes.

B(主旨题)

In this text, the author mainly discusses____

In this text, the author mainly discusses____:状语 In this text + 主语 the author + 谓语 mainly discusses + 空格作宾语,结构极简,无陷阱。

the factors that help make a successful lawyer in America The best lawyers made skyscrapers-full of money

    • One is the excessive costs of a legal educationa problem in America's legal profession and solutions to it

四项中只有 a problem in America's legal profession and solutions to it 同时覆盖"问题+解决方案"双线,且"a problem"用单数也契合作者把多条成因统归一题的论述口径。

One idea is to allow people to study law as an undergraduate degree 当作可改革点;the role of undergraduate studies in America's legal education 把局部成因当作全文主旨,明显以偏概全。

flawed ownership of America's law firms and its causes
