Text 3
P1Scientists have found that although we are prone to snap overreactions, if we take a moment and think about how we are likely to react, we can reduce or even eliminate the negative effects of our quick, hard-wired responses.

P2Snap decisions can be important defense mechanisms; if we are judging whether someone is dangerous, our brains and bodies are hard-wired to react very quickly, within milliseconds. But we need more time to assess other factors. To accurately tell whether someone is sociable, studies show, we need at least a minute, preferably five. It takes a while to judge complex aspects of personality, like neuroticism or open-mindedness.

P3But snap decisions in reaction to rapid stimuli aren't exclusive to the interpersonal realm. Psychologists at the University of Toronto found that viewing a fast-food logo for just a few milliseconds primes us to read 20 percent faster, even though reading has little to do with eating. We unconsciously associate fast food with speed and impatience and carry those impulses into whatever else we're doing, Subjects exposed to fast-food flashes also tend to think a musical piece lasts too long.

P4Yet we can reverse such influences. If we know we will overreact to consumer products or housing options when we see a happy face (one reason good sales representatives and real estate agents are always smiling), we can take a moment before buying. If we know female job screeners are more likely to reject attractive female applicants, we can help screeners understand their biases – or hire outside screeners.

P5John Gottman, the marriage expert, explains that we quickly "thin slice" information reliably only after we ground such snap reactions in "thick sliced" long-term study. When Dr. Gottman really wants to assess whether a couple will stay together, he invites them to his island retreat for a much longer evaluation: two days, not two seconds.

P6Our ability to mute our hard-wired reactions by pausing is what differentiates us from animals: dogs can think about the future only intermittently or for a few minutes. But historically we have spent about 12 percent of our days contemplating the longer term. Although technology might change the way we react, it hasn't changed our nature. We still have the imaginative capacity to rise above temptation and reverse the high-speed trend.

31.
The time needed in making decisions may____.
[ A ]predetermine the accuracy of our judgment
[ B ]prove the complexity of our brain reaction
[ C ]depend on the importance of the assessment
[ D ]vary according to the urgency of the situation

D(细节题)

The time needed in making decisions may____.

The time needed in making decisions may____. The time may ____.,needed in making decisions 是过去分词短语作后置定语修饰 The time,等价于 which is needed in making decisions;空格处补一个动词原形作谓语。

P2

Snap decisions can be important defense mechanisms; if we are judging whether someone is dangerous, our brains and bodies are hard-wired to react very quickly, within milliseconds. But we need more time to assess other factors. To accurately tell whether someone is sociable, studies show, we need at least a minute, preferably five. It takes a while to judge complex aspects of personality, like neuroticism or open-mindedness.

    • if we are judging whether someone is dangerous, our brains and bodies are hard-wired to react very quickly, within millisecondsvary according to the urgency of the situation
    • within milliseconds、at least a minute, preferably five、a whilevary

32.
Our reaction to a fast-food logo shows that snap decisions____.
[ A ]can be associative
[ B ]are not unconscious
[ C ]can be dangerous
[ D ]are not impulsive

A(细节题)

Our reaction to a fast-food logo shows that snap decisions____.

Our reaction to a fast-food logo shows that snap decisions____. Our reaction shows that ...;to a fast-food logo 介词短语后置修饰 reaction;that 引导宾语从句,空格在从句谓语处。

P3

Psychologists at the University of Toronto found that viewing a fast-food logo for just a few milliseconds primes us to read 20 percent faster, even though reading has little to do with eating. We unconsciously associate fast-food with speed and impatience and carry those impulses into whatever else we're doing, Subjects exposed to fast-food flashes also tend to think a musical piece lasts too long.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • We unconsciously associate fast-food with speed and impatience and carry those impulses into whatever else we're doingcan be associative

原文写 carry those impulses into whatever else we're doing 表明快速决策正是 impulsive(冲动的);D 项 are not impulsive 否认这一点,与原文相反。

33.
To reverse the negative influences of snap decisions, we should____.
[ A ]trust our first impression
[ B ]think before we act
[ C ]do as people usually do
[ D ]ask for expert advice

B(细节题)

To reverse the negative influences of snap decisions, we should____.

To reverse the negative influences of snap decisions, we should____. To reverse...

P4

Yet we can reverse such influences.

    • we can take a moment before buyingthink before we act
    • if we take a moment and think about how we are likely to reactthink before we act

    预判的两个关键词「停顿/思考」与「再去行动」分别对应选项的 think 与 before we act;且首段总论也支持 take a moment and think——双重证据指向 B。

34.
John Gottman says that reliable snap reactions are based on____.
[ A ]critical assessment
[ B ]"thin sliced" study
[ C ]adequate information
[ D ]sensible explanation

John Gottman

C(细节题)

John Gottman says that reliable snap reactions are based on____.

John Gottman says that reliable snap reactions are based on____. 主干 John Gottman says that...;that 引导宾语从句,从句中 are based on 是被动结构,空格处补名词短语作 on 的宾语。

P5

John Gottman, the marriage expert, explains that we quickly "thin slice" information reliably only after we ground such snap reactions in "thick sliced" long-term study.

Gottman 原句是 only after we ground such snap reactions in "thick sliced" long-term study——快速反应(thin slice)要可靠,须建立在 thick sliced(厚切)研究之上,「基础是 thick sliced」;B 项 "thin sliced" study 反过来说基础是 thin sliced,恰好与原文相反。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • we ground such snap reactions in "thick sliced" long-term studyadequate information
    • two days, not two secondsadequate information

35.
The author's attitude toward reversing the high-speed trend is____.
[ A ]tolerant
[ B ]optimistic
[ C ]uncertain
[ D ]Doubtful

  • A) 宽容的
B(态度题)

The author's attitude toward reversing the high-speed trend is____. 题干直接以 attitude 一词出现,且选项是 tolerant/optimistic/uncertain/Doubtful 一组情感极性词,毫无疑问是态度题。

The author's attitude toward reversing the high-speed trend is____. The author's attitude is ____.;toward reversing...

    • We still have the imaginative capacity to rise above temptation and reverse the high-speed trend.optimistic
    • we can reduce or even eliminate the negative effects of our quick, hard-wired responsesoptimistic
    • Yet we can reverse such influences.optimistic

预判是「正向、相信能做到」;首段 can reduce/eliminate、中段 Yet we can reverse、末段 We still have the capacity

    Doubtful(怀疑的)是负向态度,与作者的 can/still/capacity 三处正向证据彻底冲突。
