Text 2
P1A century ago, the immigrants from across the Atlantic included settlers and sojourners. Along with the many folks looking to make a permanent home in the United States came those who had no intention to stay, and who would make some money and then go home. Between 1908 and 1915, about 7 million people arrived while about 2 million departed. About a quarter of all Italian immigrants, for example, eventually returned to Italy for good. They even had an affectionate nickname, "uccelli di passaggio," birds of passage.

P2Today, we are much more rigid about immigrants. We divide newcomers into two categories: legal or illegal, good or bad. We hail them as Americans in the making, or brand them as aliens to be kicked out. That framework has contributed mightily to our broken immigration system and the long political paralysis over how to fix it. We don't need more categories, but we need to change the way we think about categories. We need to look beyond strict definitions of legal and illegal. To start, we can recognize the new birds of passage, those living and thriving in the gray areas. We might then begin to solve our immigration challenges.

P3Crop pickers, violinists, construction workers, entrepreneurs, engineers, home health-care aides and physicists are among today's birds of passage. They are energetic participants in a global economy driven by the flow of work, money and ideas. They prefer to come and go as opportunity calls them. They can manage to have a job in one place and a family in another.

P4With or without permission, they straddle laws, jurisdictions and identities with ease. We need them to imagine the United States as a place where they can be productive for a while without committing themselves to staying forever. We need them to feel that home can be both here and there and that they can belong to two nations honorably.

P5Accommodating this new world of people in motion will require new attitudes on both sides of the immigration battle. Looking beyond the culture war logic of right or wrong means opening up the middle ground and understanding that managing immigration today requires multiple paths and multiple outcomes, including some that are not easy to accomplish legally in the existing system.

26.
"Birds of passage" refers to those who____.
[ A ]stay in a foreign country temporarily
[ B ]leave their home countries for good
[ C ]immigrate across the Atlantic
[ D ]find permanent jobs overseas

A(细节题)

P1

Along with the many folks looking to make a permanent home in the United States came those who had no intention to stay, and who would make some money and then go home. ... They even had an affectionate nickname, "uccelli di passaggio," birds of passage.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • had no intention to stay, and who would make some money and then go homestay in a foreign country temporarily

    预判核心「短期/暂时停留」与stay in a foreign country temporarily中 temporarily 一一对应,故锁定 A。

leave their home countries for good说的是「永远离开故乡」,而原文恰恰强调候鸟会「go home」,方向相反。

27.
It is implied in Paragraph 2 that the current immigration system in the US ____.
[ A ]needs new immigrant categories
[ B ]has loosened control over immigrants
[ C ]should be adapted to meet challenges
[ D ]has been fixed via political means

C(推断题)

It is implied in Paragraph

形式主语 It 替代 that 从句,主句「It is implied in Paragraph 2 that...」相当于「Paragraph 2 implies that...」,从句主语是 the current immigration system,空格处接谓语成分,结构清晰。

P2

That framework has contributed mightily to our broken immigration system and the long political paralysis over how to fix it. We don't need more categories, but we need to change the way we think about categories. We need to look beyond strict definitions of legal and illegal.

needs new immigrant categories里的 new categories 与原文We don't need more categories字面冲突——作者明说「不要更多类别」。

    • our broken immigration system and the long political paralysis over how to fix itshould be adapted to meet challenges
    • We might then begin to solve our immigration challenges.should be adapted to meet challenges

    由「broken / paralysis」推「应改」一步、由「look beyond strict definitions」推「调整方式」一步,两步同向叠加正好落到should be adapted to meet challenges。

has been fixed via political means说体制「已被政治手段修好」,与原文long political paralysis over how to fix it直接相反——原文是「政治瘫痪、没能修」。

28.
According to the author, today's birds of passage want____.
[ A ]financial incentives
[ B ]a global recognition
[ C ]the freedom to stay and leave
[ D ]opportunities to get regular jobs

C(细节题)

According to the author, today's birds of passage want____

「According to the author」为状语前置,主句「today's birds of passage want____」主谓宾结构,宾语就是空格,需在原文找出一个表达诉求的名词性内容。

P3

They prefer to come and go as opportunity calls them. They can manage to have a job in one place and a family in another.

financial incentives只关注「金钱激励」,而原文「come and go as opportunity calls them」里的 opportunity 不等于钱,作者的重心也在「灵活性」而非「物质回报」。

    • prefer to come and go as opportunity calls themthe freedom to stay and leave

    预判核心「自由地停留与离开」与the freedom to stay and leave逐词对应,故锁定 C。

opportunities to get regular jobs里的 regular jobs 指向「稳定的常规工作」,恰与原文「come and go」「a job in one place and a family in another」描绘的不规则、跨地域工作格局相反。

29.
The author suggests that the birds of passage today should be treated____.
[ A ]as faithful partners
[ B ]with legal tolerance
[ C ]with economic favors
[ D ]as mighty rivals

B(推断题)

The author suggests that中 suggests 表明答案是作者立场的一步合理推断,非原句直陈。

主句 The author suggests that... 接宾语从句;从句主语 the birds of passage today,谓语 should be treated 是「情态动词 should + 被动语态」,空格处接介词短语充当方式状语。

P4

With or without permission, they straddle laws, jurisdictions and identities with ease. We need them to imagine the United States as a place where they can be productive for a while without committing themselves to staying forever. We need them to feel that home can be both here and there and that they can belong to two nations honorably.

    • With or without permission, they straddle laws, jurisdictions and identities with ease.with legal tolerance
    • We need to look beyond strict definitions of legal and illegal.with legal tolerance

30.
The most appropriate title for this text would be____.
[ A ]Come and Go: Big Mistake
[ B ]Living and Thriving: Great Risk
[ C ]With or Without: Great Risk
[ D ]Legal or Illegal: Big Mistake

D(主旨题)

题干The most appropriate title for this text would be____要求从四个备选标题中挑出能概括全文核心立场的一个。

「The most appropriate title for this text would be____」是简单系表结构,主语「最合适的标题」、表语为空格,唯一注意的是 most appropriate 暗含比较——四项都可能沾边,要选最贴的。

Come and Go: Big Mistake把作者赞许的「来去自由」(come and go)反向定性为「错」,既错估了对象又只覆盖第三段一隅。

Living and Thriving: Great Risk里 Great Risk「巨大风险」是文中从未出现的判断,作者全文都在讲价值与包容,没有提及任何「风险」论调。

With or Without: Great Risk截取的With or without permission只是第四段的一个细节短语,且 Great Risk 同样是文中未现的判断,二重错位。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • We need to look beyond strict definitions of legal and illegal.Legal or Illegal: Big Mistake
    • Looking beyond the culture war logic of right or wrong means opening up the middle groundLegal or Illegal: Big Mistake
