Text 2
P1Being a man has always been dangerous. There are about 105 males born for every 100 females, but this ratio drops to near balance at the age of maturity, and among 70-year-olds there are twice as many women as men. But the great universal of male mortality is being changed. Now, boy babies survive almost as well as girls do. This means that, for the first time, there will be an excess of boys in those crucial years when they are searching for a mate. More important, another chance for natural selection has been removed. Fifty years ago, the chance of a baby (particularly a boy baby) surviving depended on its weight. A kilogram too light or too heavy meant almost certain death. Today it makes almost no difference. Since much of the variation is due to genes, one more agent of evolution has gone.

P2There is another way to commit evolutionary suicide: stay alive, but have fewer children. Few people are as fertile as in the past. Except in some religious communities, very few women have 15 children. Nowadays the number of births, like the age of death, has become average. Most of us have roughly the same number of offspring. Again, differences between people and the opportunity for natural selection to take advantage of it have diminished. India shows what is happening. The country offers wealth for a few in the great cities and poverty for the remaining tribal peoples. The grand mediocrity of today—everyone being the same in survival and number of offspring—means that natural selection has lost 80% of its power in upper-middle-class India compared to the tribes.

P3For us, this means that evolution is over; the biological Utopia has arrived. Strangely, it has involved little physical change. No other species fills so many places in nature. But in the past 100,000 years—even the past 100 years—our lives have been transformed but our bodies have not. We did not evolve, because machines and society did it for us. Darwin had a phrase to describe those ignorant of evolution: they "look at an organic being as a savage looks at a ship, as at something wholly beyond his comprehension." No doubt we will remember a 20th century way of life beyond comprehension for its ugliness. But however amazed our descendants may be at how far from Utopia we were, they will look just like us.

15.
What used to be the danger in being a man according to the first paragraph?
[ A ]A lack of mates.
[ B ]A fierce competition.
[ C ]A lower survival rate.
[ D ]A defective gene.

C(细节题)

What used to be the danger in being a man

What used to be the danger in being a man according to the first paragraph 是一个 What 引导的特殊疑问句,主干是 What used to be the danger, used to be 表示"过去曾经是",暗含"现在已不再如此"的对比;according to the first paragraph 是状语,限定证据来源。

P1

Being a man has always been dangerous. There are about 105 males born for every 100 females, but this ratio drops to near balance at the age of maturity, and among 70-year-olds there are twice as many women as men.

A lack of mates 利用了 there will be an excess of boys in those crucial years when they are searching for a mate,但原文说的是 "将来" 会男多女少(for the first time),是变化后的新情况,不是 What used to be the danger

    • among 70-year-olds there are twice as many women as menA lower survival rate
    • Now, boy babies survive almost as well as girls doA lower survival rate

A defective gene 利用了 Since much of the variation is due to genes, one more agent of evolution has gone,但原文说的是"出生体重的差异由基因决定",根本没说男性有缺陷基因——variation due to genes ≠ defective gene。

16.
What does the example of India illustrate?
[ A ]Wealthy people tend to have fewer children than poor people.
[ B ]Natural selection hardly works among the rich and the poor.
[ C ]The middle class population is 80% smaller than that of the tribes.
[ D ]India is one of the countries with a very high birth rate.

B(例证目的题)

What does the example of India illustrate

What does the example of India illustrate 是 What 引导的特殊疑问句,主干 What does the example illustrate,of India 是后置定语限定 example。

P2

The grand mediocrity of today—everyone being the same in survival and number of offspring—means that natural selection has lost 80% of its power in upper-middle-class India compared to the tribes.

Wealthy people tend to have fewer children than poor people

    • natural selection has lost 80% of its power in upper-middle-class India compared to the tribesNatural selection hardly works among the rich and the poor
    • Again, differences between people and the opportunity for natural selection to take advantage of it have diminishedNatural selection hardly works among the rich and the poor

Natural selection hardly works among the rich and the poor

The middle class population is 80% smaller than that of the tribes 利用了 natural selection has lost 80% of its power in upper-middle-class India compared to the tribes 里的 80%,但原文 80% 修饰的是 power(自然选择的力量),不是 population(人口)。

India is one of the countries with a very high birth rate

17.
The author argues that our bodies have stopped evolving because____.
[ A ]life has been improved by technological advance
[ B ]the number of female babies has been declining
[ C ]our species has reached the highest stage of evolution
[ D ]the difference between wealth and poverty is disappearing

A(细节题)

The author argues that our bodies have stopped evolving because

The author argues that our bodies have stopped evolving because____ 是一个待补全陈述句。主句 The author argues + that 宾语从句 our bodies have stopped evolving, stop doing 表"停止做某事";because 引导原因状语从句,从句缺失,由四个选项补出。

P3

But in the past 100,000 years—even the past 100 years—our lives have been transformed but our bodies have not. We did not evolve, because machines and society did it for us.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • machines and society did it for uslife has been improved by technological advance
    • our lives have been transformed but our bodies have notlife has been improved by technological advance

预判出"机器与社会替进化做了事",正好就是 life has been improved by technological advance 的实质——technological advance 是机器和社会的总称,improved life 是它带来的结果。

    the number of female babies has been declining

our species has reached the highest stage of evolution 利用了 the biological Utopia has arrived,但 Utopia 在原文是带反讽口吻的措辞(紧接着作者就吐槽 our descendants may be at how far from Utopia we were)——原文从未说人类已是进化的最高阶段,且这也不是 Q17 问的"原因"。

the difference between wealth and poverty is disappearing 利用了 The grand mediocrity of today

18.
Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
[ A ]Sex Ratio Changes in Human Evolution.
[ B ]Ways of Continuing Man's Evolution.
[ C ]The Evolutionary Future of Nature.
[ D ]Human Evolution Going Nowhere.

D(主旨题)

Which of the following would be the best title for the passage

Which of the following would be the best title for the passage 是一个 Which 引导的特殊疑问句,would 是虚拟语气表"在所给选项中应是",主干 Which would be the best title。

Sex Ratio Changes in Human Evolution 只触到 There are about 105 males born for every 100 females

Ways of Continuing Man's Evolution 默认了进化可以"继续"并给出方法,但全文论断恰恰是 evolution is over——作者根本不主张"如何继续"。

The Evolutionary Future of Nature 利用了 No other species fills so many places in nature 里的 nature 一词,但全文真正讨论的对象是 human/man,不是 nature 整体;标题主语偷换。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • evolution is overHuman Evolution Going Nowhere
    • natural selection has lost 80% of its powerHuman Evolution Going Nowhere
    • another chance for natural selection has been removedHuman Evolution Going Nowhere
