Text 5
P1If ambition is to be well regarded, the rewards of ambition—wealth, distinction, control over one's destiny—must be deemed worthy of the sacrifices made on ambition's behalf. If the tradition of ambition is to have vitality, it must be widely shared; and it especially must be highly regarded by people who are themselves admired, the educated not least among them. In an odd way, however, it is the educated who have claimed to have given up on ambition as an ideal. What is odd is that they have perhaps most benefited from ambition—if not always their own then that of their parents and grandparents. There is a heavy note of hypocrisy in this, a case of closing the barn door after the horses have escaped—with the educated themselves riding on them.

P2Certainly people do not seem less interested in success and its signs now than formerly. Summer homes, European travel, BMWs—the locations, place names and name brands may change, but such items do not seem less in demand today than a decade or two years ago. What has happened is that people cannot confess fully to their dreams, as easily and openly as once they could, lest they be thought pushing, acquisitive and vulgar. Instead, we are treated to fine hypocritical spectacles, which now more than ever seem in ample supply: the critic of American materialism with a Southampton summer home; the publisher of radical books who takes his meals in three-star restaurants; the journalist advocating participatory democracy in all phases of life, whose own children are enrolled in private schools. For such people and many more perhaps not so exceptional, the proper formulation is, "Succeed at all costs but avoid appearing ambitious."

P3The attacks on ambition are many and come from various angles; its public defenders are few and unimpressive, where they are not extremely unattractive. As a result, the support for ambition as a healthy impulse, a quality to be admired and fixed in the mind of the young, is probably lower than it has ever been in the United States. This does not mean that ambition is at an end, that people no longer feel its stirrings and promptings, but only that, no longer openly honored, it is less openly professed. Consequences follow from this, of course, some of which are that ambition is driven underground, or made sly. Such, then, is the way things stand: on the left angry critics, on the right stupid supporters, and in the middle, as usual, the majority of earnest people trying to get on in life.

27.
It is generally believed that ambition may be well regarded if____.
[ A ]its returns well compensate for the sacrifices
[ B ]it is rewarded with money, fame and power
[ C ]its goals are spiritual rather than material
[ D ]it is shared by the rich and the famous

A(细节题)

It is generally believed that ambition may be well regarded if____.

It is generally believed that ambition may be well regarded if____. 是 "It is believed that+主句+if 条件状语从句" 结构,重心在 if 之后——补全的是 ambition 被认可所需的条件,无陷阱。

P1

If ambition is to be well regarded, the rewards of ambition—wealth, distinction, control over one's destiny—must be deemed worthy of the sacrifices made on ambition's behalf.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • the rewards of ambition—wealth, distinction, control over one's destiny—must be deemed worthy of the sacrifices made on ambition's behalfits returns well compensate for the sacrifices

its returns well compensate for the sacrifices

it is rewarded with money, fame and power 只复述了原文 wealth, distinction, control over one's destiny 的列举,丢掉了原文最关键的条件 "deemed worthy of the sacrifices"——条件不见了,命题就不成立。

原文列出的回报 wealth, distinction, control over one's destiny 全是物质或世俗目标;its goals are spiritual rather than material 把回报说成 "精神而非物质",正好与原文相反。

it is shared by the rich and the famous 谈的是"被谁分享",与题干所问 "何时被认可" 的条件无关;原文谈的是 "广泛分享 + 受 educated 推崇"(it must be widely shared; and it especially must be highly regarded by people who are themselves admired, the educated not least among them.),并非 "the rich and the famous"。

28.
The last sentence of the first paragraph most probably implies that it is____.
[ A ]customary of the educated to discard ambition in words
[ B ]too late to check ambition once it has been let out
[ C ]dishonest to deny ambition after the fulfillment of the goal
[ D ]impractical for the educated to enjoy benefits from ambition

C(推断题)

The last sentence of the first paragraph most probably implies that it is____.

P1

There is a heavy note of hypocrisy in this, a case of closing the barn door after the horses have escaped—with the educated themselves riding on them.

customary of the educated to discard ambition in words 只说"惯于口头放弃",把原文里最关键的 heavy note of hypocrisy 的伪善评价丢了——隐喻句的精髓是"事后"和"伪善",而非"惯常"。

too late to check ambition once it has been let out 只翻译了 closing the barn door after the horses have escaped 的字面(为时已晚),把作者真正要类比的本体——"受教育者已享受成果再否认 ambition"——完全丢掉了;况且原文也不是说要 check(约束)ambition。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • a heavy note of hypocrisy in this, a case of closing the barn door after the horses have escaped—with the educated themselves riding on themdishonest to deny ambition after the fulfillment of the goal

原句要点有二——hypocrisy(伪善/不诚实)+ already benefited(已经享受);dishonest to deny ambition after the fulfillment of the goal 两点全中。

原文恰恰说 they have perhaps most benefited from ambition——受教育者最受益于 ambition;impractical for the educated to enjoy benefits from ambition 反过来说 "受教育者享受 ambition 的好处不切实际",与原文相反。

29.
Some people do not openly admit they have ambition because____.
[ A ]they think of it as immoral
[ B ]their pursuits are not fame or wealth
[ C ]ambition is not closely related to material benefits
[ D ]they do not want to appear greedy and contemptible

D(细节题)

Some people do not openly admit they have ambition because____.

Some people do not openly admit they have ambition because____.

P2

What has happened is that people cannot confess fully to their dreams, as easily and openly as once they could, lest they be thought pushing, acquisitive and vulgar.

they think of it as immoral

原文整段强调人们 do not seem less interested in success and its signs——对成功的标志(避暑别墅、欧洲游、BMW)兴趣未减;their pursuits are not fame or wealth 反过来说他们追求的不是名利,与原文相反。

ambition is not closely related to material benefits

    • lest they be thought pushing, acquisitive and vulgarthey do not want to appear greedy and contemptible

they do not want to appear greedy and contemptible 既对上了原文 "lest…be thought" 的动机结构,又对上了 acquisitive/vulgar 的形容词语义场。

30.
From the last paragraph the conclusion can be drawn that ambition should be maintained____.
[ A ]secretly and vigorously
[ B ]openly and enthusiastically
[ C ]easily and momentarily
[ D ]verbally and spiritually

B(推断题)

the conclusion can be drawn

From the last paragraph the conclusion can be drawn that ambition should be maintained____.

P3

This does not mean that ambition is at an end, that people no longer feel its stirrings and promptings, but only that, no longer openly honored, it is less openly professed. Consequences follow from this, of course, some of which are that ambition is driven underground, or made sly.

secretly and vigorously 里的 secretly 恰好是作者所批评的 driven underground, or made sly 的同义近义——作者反对地下化,干扰项却让人们继续 secretly,正好与作者立场相反。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • no longer openly honored, it is less openly professedopenly and enthusiastically
    • ambition is driven underground, or made slyopenly and enthusiastically

Succeed at all costs but avoid appearing ambitious
