Text 4
P1It never rains but it pours. Just as bosses and boards have finally sorted out their worst accounting and compliance troubles, and improved their feeble corporation governance, a new problem threatens to earn them – especially in America – the sort of nasty headlines that inevitably lead to heads rolling in the executive suite: data insecurity. Left, until now, to odd, low-level IT staff to put right, and seen as a concern only of data-rich industries such as banking, telecoms and air travel, information protection is now high on the boss's agenda in businesses of every variety.

P2Several massive leakages of customer and employee data this year – from organizations as diverse as Time Warner, the American defense contractor Science Applications International Corp and even the University of California, Berkeley – have left managers hurriedly peering into their intricate IT systems and business processes in search of potential vulnerabilities.

P3"Data is becoming an asset which needs to be guarded as much as any other asset," says Haim Mendelson of Stanford University's business school. "The ability to guard customer data is the key to market value, which the board is responsible for on behalf of shareholders". Indeed, just as there is the concept of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), perhaps it is time for GASP, Generally Accepted Security Practices, suggested Eli Noam of New York's Columbia Business School. "Setting the proper investment level for security, redundancy, and recovery is a management issue, not a technical one," he says.

P4The mystery is that this should come as a surprise to any boss. Surely it should be obvious to the dimmest executive that trust, that most valuable of economic assets, is easily destroyed and hugely expensive to restore – and that few things are more likely to destroy trust than a company letting sensitive personal data get into the wrong hands.

P5The current state of affairs may have been encouraged – though not justified – by the lack of legal penalty (in America, but not Europe) for data leakage. Until California recently passed a law, American firms did not have to tell anyone, even the victim, when data went astray. That may change fast: lots of proposed data-security legislation is now doing the rounds in Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, the theft of information about some 40 million credit-card accounts in America, disclosed on June 17th, overshadowed a hugely important decision a day earlier by America's Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that puts corporate America on notice that regulators will act if firms fail to provide adequate data security.

36.
The statement "It never rains but it pours" is used to introduce____
[ A ]the fierce business competition.
[ B ]the feeble boss-board relations.
[ C ]the threat from news reports.
[ D ]the severity of data leakage.

D(例证目的题)

The statement "..." is used to introduce ___,is used to do

P1

It never rains but it pours. Just as bosses and boards have finally sorted out their worst accounting and compliance troubles, and improved their feeble corporation governance, a new problem threatens to earn them – especially in America – the sort of nasty headlines that inevitably lead to heads rolling in the executive suite: data insecurity.

    the fierce business competition

原文 bosses and boards have finally sorted out their worst accounting and compliance troubles, and improved their feeble corporation governance 明确说 feeble 的治理已经改善,是过去时的旧账,不是这句谚语要引出的新麻烦。

    • a new problem threatens to earn them – especially in America – the sort of nasty headlines that inevitably lead to heads rolling in the executive suite: data insecuritythe severity of data leakage

37.
According to Paragraph 2, some organizations check their systems to find out____
[ A ]whether there is any weak point.
[ B ]what sort of data has been stolen.
[ C ]who is responsible for the leakage.
[ D ]how the potential spies can be located.

A(细节题)

题干问 some organizations check their systems to find out ___,问的是组织在第 2 段里做这件事是为了找出什么具体内容,是典型的细节复述题。

题干主干是 some organizations check their systems to find out ___,to find out 是目的状语不定式,空格作 find out 的宾语;结构平铺直叙,无陷阱。

P2

Several massive leakages of customer and employee data this year – from organizations as diverse as Time Warner, the American defense contractor Science Applications International Corp and even the University of California, Berkeley – have left managers hurriedly peering into their intricate IT systems and business processes in search of potential vulnerabilities.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • in search of potential vulnerabilitieswhether there is any weak point

预判要找"系统是否存在潜在弱点",A 用 whether there is any weak point 把这一搜寻目的精准复现,故选 A。

原文只说 managers 在找 vulnerabilities(漏洞),没有任何一句说他们在查 what sort of data has been stolen;漏洞 ≠ 被偷的数据种类。

原文未提任何 who is responsible 的内容,managers 的行为是"审视系统找漏洞",与 who is responsible for the leakage 所指的"追责"无关。

38.
In bringing up the concept of GASP the author is making the point that____
[ A ]shareholders' interests should be properly attended to.
[ B ]information protection should be given due attention.
[ C ]businesses should enhance their level of accounting security.
[ D ]the market value of customer data should be emphasized.

B(例证目的题)

题干 In bringing up the concept of GASP the author is making the point that ___ 问作者提出 GASP 这一概念是为了说明什么,问的是引出某概念的目的。

题干主干是 the author is making the point that ___,前置 In bringing up the concept of GASP 是介词短语作状语,that 引导的从句作 the point 的同位语;结构清晰,无陷阱。

P3

Indeed, just as there is the concept of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), perhaps it is time for GASP, Generally Accepted Security Practices, suggested Eli Noam of New York's Columbia Business School. "Setting the proper investment level for security, redundancy, and recovery is a management issue, not a technical one," he says.

which the board is responsible for on behalf of shareholders

    • Data is becoming an asset which needs to be guarded as much as any other assetinformation protection should be given due attention
    • Setting the proper investment level for security, redundancy, and recovery is a management issue, not a technical oneinformation protection should be given due attention

预判要找"信息保护应被严肃对待"这一上层论点,B 用 information protection should be given due attention 直接复述这一论点,且与原文 Data is becoming an asset 和 is a management issue, not a technical one 两处同时呼应,故选 B。

The ability to guard customer data is the key to market value

39.
According to Paragraph 4, what puzzles the author is that some bosses fail to____
[ A ]see the link between trust and data protection.
[ B ]perceive the sensitivity of personal data.
[ C ]realize the high cost of data restoration.
[ D ]appreciate the economic value of trust.

A(细节题)

题干 what puzzles the author is that some bosses fail to ___ 问的是第 4 段一处具体困惑内容的对应物,属于段内事实复述。

题干主干是 what puzzles the author is that some bosses fail to ___,what 引导主语从句作主语,is 后 that 从句作表语;fail to 后接动词原形,空格须填动词短语,结构清晰,无陷阱。

P4

Surely it should be obvious to the dimmest executive that trust, that most valuable of economic assets, is easily destroyed and hugely expensive to restore – and that few things are more likely to destroy trust than a company letting sensitive personal data get into the wrong hands.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • few things are more likely to destroy trust than a company letting sensitive personal data get into the wrong handssee the link between trust and data protection
    • trust, that most valuable of economic assets, is easily destroyed and hugely expensive to restoresee the link between trust and data protection

40.
It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that____
[ A ]data leakage is more severe in Europe.
[ B ]FTC's decision is essential to data security.
[ C ]California takes the lead in security legislation.
[ D ]legal penalty is a major solution to data leakage.

D(推断题)

题干 It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that ___ 含 inferred,是推断题的标志性句式。

题干 It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that ___ 是 it 作形式主语的被动结构,from Paragraph 5 是地点状语限定推断的来源,that 从句是真正主语;结构清晰,无陷阱。

P5

The current state of affairs may have been encouraged – though not justified – by the lack of legal penalty (in America, but not Europe) for data leakage.

原文 the lack of legal penalty (in America, but not Europe) 中的 but not Europe 是说欧洲不像美国那样缺乏法律惩处——这暗示欧洲情况更好,而不是 data leakage is more severe in Europe 所说的更严重。

原文 overshadowed a hugely important decision a day earlier by America's Federal Trade Commission (FTC) 强调 FTC 决定虽然重要却被新闻盖过——重要 ≠ essential to data security;推断的核心是 legal penalty 这一上位概念是主要解决方案,不是 FTC 这一具体机构的某次决定。

    • The current state of affairs may have been encouraged – though not justified – by the lack of legal penalty (in America, but not Europe) for data leakagelegal penalty is a major solution to data leakage
    • lots of proposed data-security legislation is now doing the rounds in Washington, D.C.legal penalty is a major solution to data leakage

预判要找"法律惩处是数据泄露的主要解决途径",D 用 legal penalty is a major solution to data leakage 直接表达这一推断,且与段首因果、段末立法描述双向印证,故选 D。
