Text 3
P1Science has long had an uneasy relationship with other aspects of culture. Think of Galileo's 17th-century trial for his rebelling belief before the Catholic Church or poet William Blake's harsh remarks against the mechanistic worldview of Isaac Newton. The schism between science and the humanities has, if anything, deepened in this century.

P2Until recently, the scientific community was so powerful that it could afford to ignore its critics—but no longer. As funding for science has declined, scientists have attacked "anti-science" in several books, notably Higher Superstition, by Paul R. Gross, a biologist at the University of Virginia, and Norman Levitt, a mathematician at Rutgers University; and The Demon-Haunted World, by Carl Sagan of Cornell University.

P3Defenders of science have also voiced their concerns at meetings such as "The Flight from Science and Reason," held in New York City in 1995, and "Science in the Age of (Mis) information," which assembled last June near Buffalo.

P4Anti-science clearly means different things to different people. Gross and Levitt find fault primarily with sociologists, philosophers and other academics who have questioned science's objectivity. Sagan is more concerned with those who believe in ghosts, creationism and other phenomena that contradict the scientific worldview.

P5A survey of news stories in 1996 reveals that the anti-science tag has been attached to many other groups as well, from authorities who advocated the elimination of the last remaining stocks of smallpox virus to Republicans who advocated decreased funding for basic research.

P6Few would dispute that the term applies to the Unabomber, whose manifesto, published in 1995, scorns science and longs for return to a pre-technological utopia. But surely that does not mean environmentalists concerned about uncontrolled industrial growth are anti-science, as an essay in US News & World Report last May seemed to suggest.

P7The environmentalists, inevitably, respond to such critics. The true enemies of science, argues Paul Ehrlich of Stanford University, a pioneer of environmental studies, are those who question the evidence supporting global warming, the depletion of the ozone layer and other consequences of industrial growth.

P8Indeed, some observers fear that the anti-science epithet is in danger of becoming meaningless. "The term 'anti-science' can lump together too many, quite different things," notes Harvard University philosopher Gerald Holton in his 1993 work Science and Anti-Science. "They have in common only one thing that they tend to annoy or threaten those who regard themselves as more enlightened."

19.
The word "schism" (Line 4, Paragraph 1) in the context probably means ________.
[ A ]confrontation
[ B ]dissatisfaction
[ C ]separation
[ D ]contempt

  • A) 对抗
  • B) 不满
  • C) 分离
  • D) 轻蔑
C(词义句意题)

The word "schism" (Line 4, Paragraph 1) in the context probably means 是词义题的标准句式——给词、给坐标、问 in the context 的含义。

Q19 是个待补全的陈述句,主干 The word "schism" probably means ___;插入语 (Line 4, Paragraph 1) 给坐标,in the context 提醒考生要看上下文不能查字典义。

P1

The schism between science and the humanities has, if anything, deepened in this century.

    • The schism between science and the humanitiesseparation

四个选项里只有 separation 能自然嵌入 between science and the humanities 的结构并保留分裂含义,符合预判。

20.
Paragraphs 2 and 3 are written to ________.
[ A ]discuss the cause of the decline of science's power
[ B ]show the author's sympathy with scientists
[ C ]explain the way in which science develops
[ D ]exemplify the division of science and the humanities

第二段和第三段旨在________。

D(例证目的题)

Paragraphs 2 and 3 are written to

Q20 主语 Paragraphs 2 and 3,被动语态 are written to ___ 接动词不定式补全,无陷阱。

P2

Until recently, the scientific community was so powerful that it could afford to ignore its critics—but no longer. As funding for science has declined, scientists have attacked "anti-science" in several books...

discuss the cause of the decline of science's power 把 funding for science has declined 当成两段的中心,但这只是 P2 解释科学家为何反击的一个背景从句,不是 P2P3 在全文中的功能;P3 完全没涉及 science's power 的衰退原因。

    show the author's sympathy with scientists

explain the way in which science develops

    • The schism between science and the humanities has, if anything, deepened in this centuryexemplify the division of science and the humanities

其它选项要么只看 P2 表层(A、B),要么改换话题(C),只有 D 同时点明段落功能 exemplify 和被支撑论点 division of science and the humanities——这恰是 P1 schism deepened 的同义改写。

21.
Which of the following is true according to the passage?
[ A ]Environmentalists were blamed for anti-science in an essay.
[ B ]Politicians are not subject to the labeling of anti-science.
[ C ]The "more enlightened" tend to tag others as anti-science.
[ D ]Tagging environmentalists as "anti-science" is justifiable.

A(细节题)

true according to the passage

Q21 主语 Which of the following,谓语 is true,状语 according to the passage。

P6

But surely that does not mean environmentalists concerned about uncontrolled industrial growth are anti-science, as an essay in US News & World Report last May seemed to suggest.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • environmentalists concerned about uncontrolled industrial growth are anti-science, as an essay in US News & World Report last May seemed to suggestEnvironmentalists were blamed for anti-science in an essay

Politicians are not subject to the labeling of anti-science 与 Republicans who advocated decreased funding for basic research

    The "more enlightened" tend to tag others as anti-science 把 P8 的描述(被 anti-science 标签骚扰到的人是"more enlightened")反向改成"more enlightened 主动给别人贴标签"——原文只说他们觉得被冒犯,没说他们是贴标者。

Tagging environmentalists as "anti-science" is justifiable But surely that does not mean

22.
The author's attitude toward the issue of "science vs. anti-science" is ________.
[ A ]impartial
[ B ]subjective
[ C ]biased
[ D ]puzzling

  • A) 公正的
A(态度题)

The author's attitude toward the issue ... is

The author's attitude is ___,待补形容词;介词短语 toward the issue of "science vs. anti-science" 限定态度的对象——是对整场争论的态度,不是对单方的支持。

  • A)✓ 正确
    • The term 'anti-science' can lump together too many, quite different thingsimpartial
    • But surely that does not mean environmentalists concerned about uncontrolled industrial growth are anti-scienceimpartial
