Section II Part A (4)

Read the following four texts. Answer the questions after each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on the ANSWER SHEET. (40 points)
Text 4
P1Many people talked of the 288,000 new jobs the Labor Department reported for June, along with the drop in the unemployment rate to 6.1 percent, as good news. And they were right. For now it appears the economy is creating jobs at a decent pace. We still have a long way to go to get back to full employment, but at least we are now finally moving forward at a faster pace.

P2However, there is another important part of the jobs picture that was largely overlooked. There was a big jump in the number of people who report voluntarily working part-time. This figure is now 830,000 (4.4 percent) above its year ago level.

P3Before explaining the connection to the Obamacare, it is worth making an important distinction. Many people who work part-time jobs actually want full-time jobs. They take part-time work because this is all they can get. An increase in involuntary part-time work is evidence of weakness in the labor market and it means that many people will be having a very hard time making ends meet.

P4There was an increase in involuntary part-time in June, but the general direction has been down. Involuntary part-time employment is still far higher than before the recession, but it is down by 640,000 (7.9 percent) from its year ago level.

P5We know the difference between voluntary and involuntary part-time employment because people tell us. The survey used by the Labor Department asks people if they worked less than 35 hours in the reference week. If the answer is "yes," they are classified as working part-time. The survey then asks whether they worked less than 35 hours in that week because they wanted to work less than full time or because they had no choice. They are only classified as voluntary part-time workers if they tell the survey taker they chose to work less than 35 hours a week.

P6The issue of voluntary part-time relates to Obamacare because one of the main purposes was to allow people to get insurance outside of employment. For many people, especially those with serious health conditions or family members with serious health conditions, before Obamacare the only way to get insurance was through a job that provided health insurance.

P7However, Obamacare has allowed more than 12 million people to either get insurance through Medicaid or the exchanges. These are people who may previously have felt the need to get a full-time job that provided insurance in order to cover themselves and their families. With Obamacare there is no longer a link between employment and insurance.

36.
Which part of the jobs picture was neglected?
[ A ]The prospect of a thriving job market.
[ B ]The increase of voluntary part-time jobs.
[ C ]The possibility of full employment.
[ D ]The acceleration of job creation.

B(细节题)

Which part of the jobs picture was neglected

Which part of the jobs picture was neglected 是一个 which 引导的特殊疑问句,被动语态,主语是 Which part of the jobs picture,谓语 was neglected。

P2

However, there is another important part of the jobs picture that was largely overlooked. There was a big jump in the number of people who report voluntarily working part-time.

The prospect of a thriving job market(繁荣就业市场的前景)讲的是首段 good news 所赞许的整体向好,但作者明说「被忽视的是另一块」,不是这一块。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • a big jump in the number of people who report voluntarily working part-timeThe increase of voluntary part-time jobs

The increase of voluntary part-time jobs

The possibility of full employment We still have a long way to go to get back to full employment,但那是作者承认的「未达成的远景」,并不是被忽视、需要点出的另一块。

The acceleration of job creation 对应首段 moving forward at a faster pace,但这恰是被广泛谈论、被认可的「好消息」,并非被忽视的另一块。

37.
Many people work part-time because they____.
[ A ]prefer part-time jobs to full-time jobs
[ B ]feel that is enough to make ends meet
[ C ]cannot get their hands on full-time jobs
[ D ]haven't seen the weakness of the market

C(细节题)

Many people work part-time because they____ 是因果型完形陈述,要求从原文找一条直接陈述的原因,属于细节题。

Many people work part-time because they____ 是主从复合句的因果结构,主句 Many people work part-time,从句以 because 引导,空格处补的是 they 后接的谓语。

P3

Many people who work part-time jobs actually want full-time jobs. They take part-time work because this is all they can get.

    原文明说 actually want full-time jobs——他们其实想全职;选项 prefer part-time jobs to full-time jobs 却说更喜欢兼职,与原文恰好相反。

feel that is enough to make ends meet 是说「觉得这就够维持生计」;原文 many people will be having a very hard time making ends meet 恰恰说他们「很难维持生计」,选项不仅原文没说「觉得够用」,还反着改了。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • this is all they can getcannot get their hands on full-time jobs

38.
Involuntary part-time employment in the US____.
[ A ]shows a general tendency of decline
[ B ]is harder to acquire than one year ago
[ C ]satisfies the real need of the jobless
[ D ]is lower than before the recession

A(细节题)

Involuntary part-time employment in the US____ 等待补的是对该现象的现状描述,要在原文找一条直接的趋势陈述。

Involuntary part-time employment in the US____ 主语是 Involuntary part-time employment in the US,后接谓语空格,是简单的主谓结构等待补全。

P4

There was an increase in involuntary part-time in June, but the general direction has been down.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • the general direction has been downshows a general tendency of decline

预判要的是「整体趋势向下」,shows a general tendency of decline 两个关键词 general 与 decline 都精准对应原文 general 与 down,是唯一同义替换项。

is harder to acquire than one year ago(比一年前更难获得)原文从未谈兼职是否「更难获得」,只谈非自愿兼职的数量比一年前下降。

satisfies the real need of the jobless(满足了失业者的真实需求)原文从未讨论非自愿兼职是否「满足了需求」;恰相反,做非自愿兼职的人不满足,因为他们想要的是全职。

is lower than before the recession(比衰退前更低)与原文 Involuntary part-time employment is still far higher than before the recession

39.
It can be learned that with Obamacare, ____.
[ A ]it is no longer easy for part-timers to get insurance
[ B ]full-time employment is still essential for insurance
[ C ]it is still challenging to get insurance for family members
[ D ]employment is no longer a precondition to get insurance

D(推断题)

It can be learned that with Obamacare 以 It can be learned 起头,等待对 Obamacare 下结果性结论,属于推断题。

It can be learned that with Obamacare, ____ 中 It 是形式主语,that 引导真正的主语从句,with Obamacare 是介词短语作条件状语,空格处补的是 that 从句的主谓。

P7

With Obamacare there is no longer a link between employment and insurance.

it is no longer easy for part-timers to get insurance

full-time employment is still essential for insurance

it is still challenging to get insurance for family members 说「为家人买保险仍然有挑战」;原文虽然提到 family members with serious health conditions,但那是在描述 Obamacare 之前的处境,且作者没有评价「Obamacare 之后家人买保险是否仍有挑战」。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • no longer a link between employment and insuranceemployment is no longer a precondition to get insurance
    • before Obamacare the only way to get insurance was through a job that provided health insuranceemployment is no longer a precondition to get insurance

这是 a link between → a precondition for 的最自然下位化替换。

40.
The text mainly discusses____.
[ A ]employment in the US
[ B ]part-timer classification
[ C ]insurance through Medicaid
[ D ]Obamacare's trouble

  • D) Obamacare的问题
A(主旨题)

The text mainly discusses____ 主语 The text,谓语 mainly discusses,空格补宾语。

  • A)✓ 正确
    • the economy is creating jobs at a decent paceemployment in the US
    • another important part of the jobs pictureemployment in the US
    • no longer a link between employment and insuranceemployment in the US

insurance through Medicaid 只对应 get insurance through Medicaid or the exchanges 这一处细节,连 P6–P7 这一区间都覆盖不完整,更不可能涵盖前面五段。
