Text 1
P1It is curious that Stephen Koziatek feels almost as though he has to justify his efforts to give his students a better future.

P2Mr. Koziatek is part of something pioneering. He is a teacher at a New Hampshire high school where learning is not something of books and tests and mechanical memorization, but practical. When did it become accepted wisdom that students should be able to name the 13th president of the United States but be utterly overwhelmed by a broken bike chain?

P3As Koziatek knows, there is learning in just about everything. Nothing is necessarily gained by forcing students to learn geometry at a graffitied desk stuck with generations of discarded chewing gum. They can also learn geometry by assembling a bicycle.

P4But he's also found a kind of insidious prejudice. Working with your hands is seen as almost a mark of inferiority. Schools in the family of vocational education "have that stereotype…that it's for kids who can't make it academically," he says.

P5On one hand, that viewpoint is a logical product of America's evolution. Manufacturing is not the economic engine that it once was. The job security that the US economy once offered to high school graduates has largely evaporated. More education is the new principle. We want more for our kids, and rightfully so.

P6But the headlong push into bachelor's degrees for all – and the subtle devaluing of anything less – misses an important point: That's not the only thing the American economy needs. Yes, a bachelor's degree opens more doors. But even now, 54 percent of the jobs in the country are middle-skill jobs, such as construction and high-skill manufacturing. But only 44 percent of workers are adequately trained.

P7In other words, at a time when the working class has turned the country on its political head, frustrated that the opportunity that once defined America is vanishing, one obvious solution is staring us in the face. There is a gap in working-class jobs, but the workers who need those jobs most aren't equipped to do them. Koziatek's Manchester School of Technology High School is trying to fill that gap.

Koziatek的Manchester School of Technology High School正试图填补这一缺口。

P8Koziatek's school is a wake-up call. When education becomes one-size-fits-all, it risks overlooking a nation's diversity of gifts.

21.
A broken bike chain is mentioned to show students' lack of____.
[ A ]practical ability
[ B ]academic training
[ C ]pioneering spirit
[ D ]mechanical memorization

A(细节题)

题干 A broken bike chain is mentioned to show students' lack of

A broken bike chain is mentioned to show students' lack of ____ 是被动语态的简单句,to show 引导目的状语,空格作 of 的宾语,搭配 lack of 决定答案应是一个名词或名词性短语,结构无陷阱。

P2

When did it become accepted wisdom that students should be able to name the 13th president of the United States but be utterly overwhelmed by a broken bike chain?

  • A)✓ 正确
    • be utterly overwhelmed by a broken bike chainpractical ability

Mr. Koziatek is part of something pioneering.,是形容 Koziatek 老师所做的事,与学生缺什么无关。

mechanical memorization 是原文批评的对象(learning is not something of books and tests and mechanical memorization),学生恰恰是这方面被训练得最多,而不是"缺"它。

22.
There exists the prejudice that vocational education is for kids who____.
[ A ]have a stereotyped mind
[ B ]have no career motivation
[ C ]are not academically successful
[ D ]are financially disadvantaged

C(细节题)

题干 There exists the prejudice that vocational education is for kids who

There exists the prejudice that vocational education is for kids who ____,that 引导同位语从句解释 prejudice 的内容,who 引导定语从句修饰 kids,空格是定语从句的谓语部分;结构清晰、无陷阱。

P4

Schools in the family of vocational education "have that stereotype…that it's for kids who can't make it academically," he says.

have a stereotyped mind

    have no career motivation

    • for kids who can't make it academicallyare not academically successful

23.
We can infer from Paragraph 5 that high school graduates____.
[ A ]used to have big financial concerns
[ B ]used to have more job opportunities
[ C ]are reluctant to work in manufacturing
[ D ]are entitled to more educational privileges

B(推断题)

题干 We can infer from Paragraph 5 that

We can infer from Paragraph 5 that high school graduates ____ 是 infer that 引导宾语从句的结构,high school graduates 是宾语从句主语,空格是其谓语;结构平铺直叙、无陷阱。

P5

Manufacturing is not the economic engine that it once was. The job security that the US economy once offered to high school graduates has largely evaporated.

used to have big financial concerns——原文说过去"经济提供工作保障",恰恰意味着过去经济顾虑较小,而非更大;方向反了。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • The job security that the US economy once offered to high school graduates has largely evaporated.used to have more job opportunities

由 has largely evaporated 直接反推过去"曾有",再结合 once 的时间标志,used to have more job opportunities 是一步合法的推断结论。

are reluctant to work in manufacturing

are entitled to more educational privileges 把原文 More education is the new principle. We want more for our kids

24.
The headlong push into bachelor's degrees for all____.
[ A ]helps create a lot of middle-skill jobs
[ B ]may narrow the gap in working-class jobs
[ C ]is expected to yield a better-trained workforce
[ D ]indicates the overvaluing of higher education

D(细节题)

The headlong push into bachelor's degrees for all

The headlong push into bachelor's degrees for all ____ 中 push 是核心名词,into bachelor's degrees for all 作修饰,整个主语是名词短语,空格是谓语;headlong 含"贸然、不加思考"的负面色彩,提醒考生原文对此持负面评价。

P6

But the headlong push into bachelor's degrees for all – and the subtle devaluing of anything less – misses an important point: That's not the only thing the American economy needs.

may narrow the gap in working-class jobs 与原文相反——这股潮流恰恰让人都去读学士、不去做中等技能岗位,从而拉大了岗位缺口(参见 There is a gap in working-class jobs)。

is expected to yield a better-trained workforce 与原文数据相反——only 44 percent of workers are adequately trained,作者明确指出这股潮流没能造就合格的工人队伍,而不是"被期望"造就。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • the headlong push into bachelor's degrees for all – and the subtle devaluing of anything less – misses an important pointindicates the overvaluing of higher education

25.
The author's attitude toward Koziatek's school can be described as____.
[ A ]supportive
[ B ]tolerant
[ C ]disappointed
[ D ]cautious

  • A) 支持的
  • B) 宽容的
  • C) 失望的
  • D) 谨慎的
A(态度题)

题干 The author's attitude toward Koziatek's school can be described as

The author's attitude toward Koziatek's school can be described as ____ 是简单系表结构,attitude toward 限定态度对象,can be described as 后接形容词作表语;结构无陷阱,但要注意 can be described as 暗示了一个相对克制的标签,过强烈的词需要警惕。

  • A)✓ 正确
    • Koziatek's school is a wake-up call.supportive
    • Koziatek's Manchester School of Technology High School is trying to fill that gap.supportive

    pioneering + trying to fill that gap + a wake-up call + diversity of gifts

    cautious(谨慎)意味着作者对该校的支持有所保留,但原文 a wake-up call 与 trying to fill that gap 都是明确肯定,没有任何 however / but / yet 类保留信号。
