Text 1
P1Habits are a funny thing. We reach for them mindlessly, setting our brains on auto-pilot and relaxing into the unconscious comfort of familiar routine. "Not choice, but habit rules the unreflecting herd," William Wordsworth said in the 19th century. In the ever-changing 21st century, even the word "habit" carries a negative implication.

P2So it seems paradoxical to talk about habits in the same context as creativity and innovation. But brain researchers have discovered that when we consciously develop new habits, we create parallel paths, and even entirely new brain cells, that can jump our trains of thought onto new, innovative tracks.

P3Rather than dismissing ourselves as unchangeable creatures of habit, we can instead direct our own change by consciously developing new habits. In fact, the more new things we try – the more we step outside our comfort zone – the more inherently creative we become, both in the workplace and in our personal lives.

P4But don't bother trying to kill off old habits; once those ruts of procedure are worn into the brain, they're there to stay. Instead, the new habits we deliberately press into ourselves create parallel pathways that can bypass those old roads.

P5"The first thing needed for innovation is a fascination with wonder," says Dawna Markova, author of The Open Mind. "But we are taught instead to 'decide', just as our president calls himself 'the Decider'." She adds, however, that "to decide is to kill off all possibilities but one. A good innovational thinker is always exploring the many other possibilities."

P6All of us work through problems in ways of which we're unaware, she says. Researchers in the late 1960s discovered that humans are born with the capacity to approach challenges in four primary ways: analytically, procedurally, relationally (or collaboratively) and innovatively. At the end of adolescence, however, the brain shuts down half of that capacity, preserving only those modes of thought that have seemed most valuable during the first decade or so of life.

P7The current emphasis on standardized testing highlights analysis and procedure, meaning that few of us inherently use our innovative and collaborative modes of thought. "This breaks the major rule in the American belief system – that anyone can do anything," explains M. J. Ryan, author of the 2006 book This Year I Will… and Ms. Markova's business partner. "That's a lie that we have perpetuated, and it fosters commonness. Knowing what you're good at and doing even more of it creates excellence." This is where developing new habits comes in.

21.
In Wordsworth's view, "habits" is characterized by being____
[ A ]casual.
[ B ]familiar.
[ C ]mechanical.
[ D ]changeable.

  • A) 随意的
  • B) 熟悉的
  • C) 机械的
  • D) 易变的
C(细节题)

题干 In Wordsworth's view, "habits" is characterized by being

介词短语 In Wordsworth's view 是状语,主语是 "habits",谓语 is characterized by being 是「以……

P1

"Not choice, but habit rules the unreflecting herd," William Wordsworth said in the 19th century.

familiar 是 P1 段首作者自己的描述 the unconscious comfort of familiar routine,而非 Wordsworth 的观点;本题题干明确限定 In Wordsworth's view,张冠李戴。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • the unreflecting herdmechanical
    • Not choice, but habit rulesmechanical

changeable 意为「易变的」,与 Wordsworth 言下之意「习惯如统治者般支配群体」相反;后文 once those ruts of procedure are worn into the brain, they're there to stay 也佐证旧习惯不可改变。

22.
Brain researchers have discovered that the formation of new habits can be____
[ A ]predicted.
[ B ]regulated.
[ C ]traced.
[ D ]guided.

  • A) 预测
  • B) 调节
  • C) 追踪
  • D) 引导
D(细节题)

题干 Brain researchers have discovered that the formation of new habits can be

Brain researchers have discovered,that 引导宾语从句,从句主语 the formation of new habits(of 短语作定语),系动词 + can be + 选项形容词,选项作表语。

P2

But brain researchers have discovered that when we consciously develop new habits, we create parallel paths, and even entirely new brain cells, that can jump our trains of thought onto new, innovative tracks.

    • consciously develop new habitsguided
    • we can instead direct our own change by consciously developing new habitsguided

23.
The word "ruts" (Para. 4) is closest in meaning to____
[ A ]tracks.
[ B ]series.
[ C ]characteristics.
[ D ]connections.

  • A) 轨迹
  • B) 系列
  • C) 特征
  • D) 连接
A(词义句意题)

题干 The word "ruts" (Para. 4) is closest in meaning to

The word "ruts" ... is closest in meaning to,(Para. 4) 是定位提示括号,is closest in meaning to 是固定搭配,意为「在意义上最接近于」。

P4

But don't bother trying to kill off old habits; once those ruts of procedure are worn into the brain, they're there to stay. Instead, the new habits we deliberately press into ourselves create parallel pathways that can bypass those old roads.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • those old roadstracks
    • parallel pathwaystracks

24.
Dawna Markova would most probably agree that____
[ A ]ideas are born of a relaxing mind.
[ B ]innovativeness could be taught.
[ C ]decisiveness derives from fantastic ideas.
[ D ]curiosity activates creative minds.

Dawna Markova很可能会同意____

D(推断题)

题干 Dawna Markova would most probably agree that

Dawna Markova would most probably agree, that would 表示推测语气,与 most probably 呼应。

P5

"The first thing needed for innovation is a fascination with wonder," says Dawna Markova, author of The Open Mind. ... "to decide is to kill off all possibilities but one. A good innovational thinker is always exploring the many other possibilities."

ideas are born of a relaxing mind

decisiveness derives from fantastic ideas 既把 decisiveness(果断决定)当成被推崇的品质(与原文相反——Markova 批评 decide 是「to kill off all possibilities but one」),又在「果断」与「奇妙想法」之间强加因果(原文无此关系)。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • a fascination with wondercuriosity
    • The first thing needed for innovationactivates creative minds
    • A good innovational thinker is always exploring the many other possibilitiescuriosity activates creative minds

25.
Ryan's comments suggest that the practice of standardized testing____
[ A ]prevents new habits from being formed.
[ B ]no longer emphasizes commonness.
[ C ]maintains the inherent American thinking mode.
[ D ]complies with the American belief system.

Ryan

A(推断题)

题干 Ryan's comments suggest that the practice of standardized testing

Q25 主干 Ryan's comments suggest,that 引导宾语从句,从句主语是 the practice of standardized testing(of 短语作后置定语),选项整体作从句谓语。

P7

The current emphasis on standardized testing highlights analysis and procedure, meaning that few of us inherently use our innovative and collaborative modes of thought. "This breaks the major rule in the American belief system – that anyone can do anything," explains M. J. Ryan, ... "That's a lie that we have perpetuated, and it fosters commonness. Knowing what you're good at and doing even more of it creates excellence."

  • A)✓ 正确
    • few of us inherently use our innovative and collaborative modes of thoughtprevents new habits from being formed
    • This is where developing new habits comes in.prevents new habits from being formed

    推一步因果:「standardized testing 只激活分析/程序 → 创新/协作被冷落 → 新习惯不易形成」;选项 prevents new habits from being formed 精准接住这条因果链。

maintains the inherent American thinking mode This breaks the major rule in the American belief system

complies with the American belief system This breaks the major rule in the American belief system 已明示「打破核心法则」——breaks ≠ complies。
