Text 1
P1King Juan Carlos of Spain once insisted "kings don't abdicate, they die in their sleep." But embarrassing scandals and the popularity of the republican left in the recent Euro-elections have forced him to eat his words and stand down. So, does the Spanish crisis suggest that monarchy is seeing its last days? Does that mean the writing is on the wall for all European royals, with their magnificent uniforms and majestic lifestyles?

P2The Spanish case provides arguments both for and against monarchy. When public opinion is particularly polarised, as it was following the end of the Franco regime, monarchs can rise above "mere" politics and "embody" a spirit of national unity.

P3It is this apparent transcendence of politics that explains monarchs' continuing popularity as heads of state. And so, the Middle East excepted, Europe is the most monarch-infested region in the world, with 10 kingdoms (not counting Vatican city and Andorra). But unlike their absolutist counterparts in the Gulf and Asia, most royal families have survived because they allow voters to avoid the difficult search for a non-controversial but respected public figure.

P4Even so, kings and queens undoubtedly have a downside. Symbolic of national unity as they claim to be, their very history – and sometimes the way they behave today – embodies outdated and indefensible privileges and inequalities. At a time when Thomas Piketty and other economists are warning of rising inequality and the increasing power of inherited wealth, it is bizarre that wealthy aristocratic families should still be the symbolic heart of modern democratic states.

P5The most successful monarchies strive to abandon or hide their old aristocratic ways. Princes and princesses have day-jobs and ride bicycles, not horses (or helicopters). Even so, these are wealthy families who party with the international 1%, and media intrusiveness makes it increasingly difficult to maintain the right image.

P6While Europe's monarchies will no doubt be smart enough to survive for some time to come, it is the British royals who have most to fear from the Spanish example.

P7It is only the Queen who has preserved the monarchy's reputation with her rather ordinary (if well-heeled) granny style. The danger will come with Charles, who has both an expensive taste of lifestyle and a pretty hierarchical view of the world. He has failed to understand that monarchies have largely survived because they provide a service–as non-controversial and non-political heads of state. Charles ought to know that as English history shows, it is kings, not republicans, who are the monarchy's worst enemies.

21.
According to the first two paragraphs, King Juan Carl of Spain____
[ A ]eased his relationship with his rivals.
[ B ]used to enjoy high public support.
[ C ]was unpopular among European royals.
[ D ]ended his reign in embarrassment.

D(细节题)

题干 According to the first two paragraphs

According to the first two paragraphs, King Juan Carl of Spain____ 是不完整陈述句,空白处由四个选项补完,主语是 King Juan Carl of Spain,谓语在选项里。

P1

But embarrassing scandals and the popularity of the republican left in the recent Euro-elections have forced him to eat his words and stand down.

原文从未提 Carlos 与对手关系'缓和',只说他被对手(共和左翼)压力所迫退位,谈不上 eased his relationship with his rivals。

    • embarrassing scandalsin embarrassment
    • stand downended his reign

22.
Monarchs are kept as heads of state in Europe mostly____
[ A ]to give voters more public figures to look up to.
[ B ]to achieve a balance between tradition and reality.
[ C ]owing to their undoubted and respectable status.
[ D ]due to their everlasting political embodiment.

C(细节题)

Monarchs are kept as heads of state in Europe mostly____ 问的是客观原因,不带 infer/suggest,答案要在原文有直接出处。

Monarchs are kept as heads of state in Europe mostly____ 含被动语态 'are kept',逻辑主语是隐含的'欧洲社会/选民',副词 'mostly' 修饰整个原因,选项各以介词短语补出主要原因,结构清晰。

P3

But unlike their absolutist counterparts in the Gulf and Asia, most royal families have survived because they allow voters to avoid the difficult search for a non-controversial but respected public figure.

原文说王室让选民 avoid the difficult search for a non-controversial but respected public figure——是'省去找别人';to give voters more public figures to look up to 反过来说成'给选民提供更多可仰望的公众人物',把'减少负担'偷换成'增加选项'。

原文从未谈及王室在'传统与现实'之间求平衡,to achieve a balance between tradition and reality 是常识化的漂亮话,但无原文出处。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • a non-controversial but respected public figuretheir undoubted and respectable status
    • most royal families have survived becauseowing to

    C 项把原文'无争议+受尊敬'的两个属性合并为'undoubted and respectable',并用 'owing to' 替换 'because',预判要点全部落点。

23.
Which of the following is shown to be odd, according to Paragraph 4?
[ A ]Aristocrats' excessive reliance on inherited wealth.
[ B ]The role of the nobility in modern democracies.
[ C ]The simple lifestyle of the aristocratic families.
[ D ]The nobility's adherence to their privileges.

B(细节题)

Which of the following is shown to be odd, according to Paragraph 4?

Which of the following is shown to be odd, according to Paragraph 4?

P4

At a time when Thomas Piketty and other economists are warning of rising inequality and the increasing power of inherited wealth, it is bizarre that wealthy aristocratic families should still be the symbolic heart of modern democratic states.

Aristocrats' excessive reliance on inherited wealth

    • wealthy aristocratic familiesThe nobility
    • the symbolic heart of modern democratic statesrole ... in modern democracies

原文紧接着的 P5 才提到一些王室努力 strive to abandon or hide their old aristocratic ways,且这是讲'王室'而非泛指贵族;P4 谈贵族家庭,与'simple lifestyle'完全相反。

24.
The British royals "have most to fear" because Charles____
[ A ]fails to adapt himself to his future role.
[ B ]fails to change his lifestyle as advised.
[ C ]takes republicans as his potential allies.
[ D ]takes a tough line on political issues.

A(细节题)

The British royals "have most to fear" because Charles____ 的 because 已经指明要在原文找因果链中'果'对应的'因',是细节题。

The British royals "have most to fear" because Charles____ 是 because 引导原因状语从句的不完整句,主句已给'英国王室最该担心',从句的谓语在选项里。注意 'have most to fear' 是 'have most (something) to fear' 的省略,意为'最有可担心的'。

P7

He has failed to understand that monarchies have largely survived because they provide a service–as non-controversial and non-political heads of state.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • He has failed to understand that monarchies have largely survived because they provide a servicefails to adapt himself to his future role
    • as non-controversial and non-political heads of statehis future role

    A 项同时点中 Charles'认知缺失(fails to adapt = failed to understand 的结果)'和'未来角色(future role = non-political head of state)'两个要素,与预判一致。

原文从未提到任何人'建议'Charles 改变生活方式,fails to change his lifestyle as advised 凭空多出'as advised'这一情节。

原文结尾 it is kings, not republicans, who are the monarchy's worst enemies 把共和派和国王对立,国王自己才是君主制的最大威胁;takes republicans as his potential allies 反把共和派写成 Charles 的潜在盟友,与原文极性相反。

原文只说 Charles 有 a pretty hierarchical view of the world,谈的是世界观'等级化',并未提他对具体政治议题持强硬立场;takes a tough line on political issues 凭空给他造'政治议题上的强硬路线'。

25.
Which of the following is the best title of the text?
[ A ]Carlos, Glory and Disgrace Combined
[ B ]Charles, Anxious to Succeed to the Throne
[ C ]Carlos, a Lesson for All European Monarchs
[ D ]Charles, Slow to React to the Coming Threats

C(主旨题)

Which of the following is the best title of the text?

Which of the following is the best title of the text? 是标准疑问句,主语 'which','best title of the text' 即'本文最佳标题',结构无陷阱。

    Carlos, Glory and Disgrace Combined

Charles Anxious to Succeed to the Throne(急于继位),只批他奢侈、等级观念重、没明白王室的服务本质;'anxious to succeed' 是凭空臆造的心理。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • it is the British royals who have most to fear from the Spanish examplea Lesson for All European Monarchs
    • King Juan Carlos of SpainCarlos

    C 项的'Carlos'对接 P1—P2 与 P6 的核心人物,'a Lesson for All European Monarchs'对接 P3—P5 的全欧视角与 P7 末句的训诫意味,主体与立场双双覆盖。

Charles, Slow to React to the Coming Threats 只覆盖 P6—P7 中 Charles 的局部内容,且'Slow to React'(反应迟钝)并不准确——原文说他是 has failed to understand(根本没理解),更不是'反应慢';同时标题完全丢失 P1—P5 的内容。
