Text 1
P1Among the annoying challenges facing the middle class is one that will probably go unmentioned in the next presidential campaign: What happens when the robots come for their jobs?

P2Don't dismiss that possibility entirely. About half of U.S. jobs are at high risk of being automated, according to a University of Oxford study, with the middle class disproportionately squeezed. Lower-income jobs like gardening or day care don't appeal to robots. But many middle-class occupations – trucking, financial advice, software engineering – have aroused their interest, or soon will. The rich own the robots, so they will be fine.

P3This isn't to be alarmist. Optimists point out that technological upheaval has benefited workers in the past. The Industrial Revolution didn't go so well for Luddites whose jobs were displaced by mechanized looms, but it eventually raised living standards and created more jobs than it destroyed. Likewise, automation should eventually boost productivity, stimulate demand by driving down prices, and free workers from hard, boring work. But in the medium term, middle-class workers may need a lot of help adjusting.

P4The first step, as Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee argue in The Second Machine Age, should be rethinking education and job training. Curriculums – from grammar school to college – should evolve to focus less on memorizing facts and more on creativity and complex communication. Vocational schools should do a better job of fostering problem-solving skills and helping students work alongside robots. Online education can supplement the traditional kind. It could make extra training and instruction affordable. Professionals trying to acquire new skills will be able to do so without going into debt.

P5The challenge of coping with automation underlines the need for the U.S. to revive its fading business dynamism: Starting new companies must be made easier. In previous eras of drastic technological change, entrepreneurs smoothed the transition by dreaming up ways to combine labor and machines. The best uses of 3D printers and virtual reality haven't been invented yet. The U.S. needs the new companies that will invent them.

P6Finally, because automation threatens to widen the gap between capital income and labor income, taxes and the safety net will have to be rethought. Taxes on low-wage labor need to be cut, and wage subsidies such as the earned income tax credit should be expanded: This would boost incomes, encourage work, reward companies for job creation, and reduce inequality.

P7Technology will improve society in ways big and small over the next few years, yet this will be little comfort to those who find their lives and careers upended by automation. Destroying the machines that are coming for our jobs would be nuts. But policies to help workers adapt will be indispensable.

21.
Who will be most threatened by automation?
[ A ]Leading politicians.
[ B ]Low-wage laborers.
[ C ]Robot owners.
[ D ]Middle-class workers.

D(细节题)

Who will be most threatened by automation?

Who will be most threatened by automation? Who will be threatened, most 修饰过去分词作表语,by automation 是被动施动者。

P2

About half of U.S. jobs are at high risk of being automated, according to a University of Oxford study, with the middle class disproportionately squeezed. Lower-income jobs like gardening or day care don't appeal to robots. But many middle-class occupations – trucking, financial advice, software engineering – have aroused their interest, or soon will. The rich own the robots, so they will be fine.

What happens when the robots come for their jobs?

Lower-income jobs like gardening or day care don't appeal to robots

The rich own the robots, so they will be fine

    • the middle class disproportionately squeezedMiddle-class workers
    • many middle-class occupations – trucking, financial advice, software engineering – have aroused their interestMiddle-class workers

22.
Which of the following best represents the author's view?
[ A ]Worries about automation are in fact groundless.
[ B ]Optimists' opinions on new tech find little support.
[ C ]Issues arising from automation need to be tackled.
[ D ]Negative consequences of new tech can be avoided.

C(主旨题)

best represents the author's view

Which of the following best represents the author's view?

    A 项 Worries about automation are in fact groundless 说担忧毫无根据;但作者在 P2 明列"中产被挤压"、在 P3 用 But 强调"中期内需帮助"、在 P7 称政策"不可或缺",全文都在确认担忧有据。

Optimists point out that technological upheaval has benefited workers in the past 与 Likewise, automation should eventually boost productivity, stimulate demand by driving down prices, and free workers from hard, boring work

    • But in the medium term, middle-class workers may need a lot of help adjustingIssues arising from automation need to be tackled
    • But policies to help workers adapt will be indispensableIssues arising from automation need to be tackled

C 项 Issues arising from automation need to be tackled 既承认 Issues(问题真实),又提出 need to be tackled(须解决),与预判两层完全契合。

原文 middle-class workers may need a lot of help adjusting 和 policies to help workers adapt will be indispensable 都是"帮助适应",不是"完全避免";this will be little comfort to those who find their lives and careers upended by automation 反而承认"被自动化颠覆的人很难被安慰",负面后果客观存在。

23.
Education in the age of automation should put more emphasis on____
[ A ]creative potential.
[ B ]job-hunting skills.
[ C ]individual needs.
[ D ]cooperative spirit.

A(细节题)

Education in the age of automation should put more emphasis on____

Education in the age of automation should put more emphasis on____ 主语 Education 带后置介词短语修饰,谓语 should put、宾语 more emphasis,on 后接的空位待填。

P4

Curriculums – from grammar school to college – should evolve to focus less on memorizing facts and more on creativity and complex communication.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • creativity and complex communicationcreative potential

四个选项中只有 A 含 creative 词根,与定位句 more on 后的 creativity 直接对应;其余三项均不在 more on 的指向范围内。

Online education can supplement the traditional kind. It could make extra training and instruction affordable

complex communication 与 work alongside robots 都隐含"协同",但不等于"合作精神"作为教育的强调重点;原文 more on 后只列出 creativity 与 complex communication,未把"合作精神"作为单独强调项。

24.
The author suggests that tax policies be aimed at____
[ A ]encouraging the development of automation.
[ B ]increasing the return on capital investment.
[ C ]easing the hostility between rich and poor.
[ D ]preventing the income gap from widening.

D(细节题)

The author suggests that tax policies be aimed at____

The author suggests that tax policies be aimed at____ suggest 引导虚拟语气从句,从句省略 should,谓语用动词原形 be aimed at。

P6

Finally, because automation threatens to widen the gap between capital income and labor income, taxes and the safety net will have to be rethought.

Taxes on low-wage labor need to be cut, and wage subsidies such as the earned income tax credit should be expanded

段末 boost incomes, encourage work, reward companies for job creation, and reduce inequality 列的是"减不平等",不是"缓解贫富之间的敌意";hostility(敌意)是情感层面,原文谈的是物质收入层面,不等价。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • because automation threatens to widen the gap between capital income and labor incomepreventing the income gap from widening

    预判"防止差距扩大"与 D 项 preventing the income gap from widening 字面对应;A/B/C 三项都偏离"防止收入差距扩大"这一目的。

25.
In this text, the author presents a problem with____
[ A ]opposing views on it.
[ B ]possible solutions to it.
[ C ]its alarming impacts.
[ D ]its major variations.

B(主旨题)

In this text, the author presents a problem with____

In this text, the author presents a problem with____ 主干是 the author presents a problem, with 后空位待填修饰 problem 的方式。

    • The first step, as Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee argue in The Second Machine Age, should be rethinking education and job trainingpossible solutions to it
    • Finally, because automation threatens to widen the gap between capital income and labor income, taxes and the safety net will have to be rethoughtpossible solutions to it

This isn't to be alarmist(这不是危言耸听)以自我克制;alarming impacts(惊人冲击)不是本文的叙述基调。
